THE WARNING OF DEATH. Thf.y tell me that my closing hour is near. I know not if it is so.coming time Has some few records that we may not hear Without a dark inclining unto crime. Make not mv heart the wizard or the seer, But know'that if I perish in my prime. It cannot be till the weird sister hands That weave mv thread of destiny shall tire, And with their fatal shears clip off'the bands That bind mc to Repentance and Desire. Never, till my own Destiny commands, And earth grows palled with me, shall I expire. I shrink not from the ordeal:.ere my close How many may lament that I am here : How many cheeks, where nestled long the rose, With mc shall sadly change it for a tear: How many times, self-willed, shall I oppose My bosom to Remorse's venomed spear. ' A thousand.yet I struggle to fulfill, In sadness and in mirth, a given round' That bears no seeming guidance from my will, And hurries madly to itrs final bound ; 80 shall my lift-, untouched by mortal spell, Falter and fail mc when the lost is found. *Tl»ls nonsense might have done extremely well In time* of old, whew people would believe The kind of doggerel that all poets tell [' thies About 'compelF and 'hell,' . grieve,' 'deave' and tVe do kmvt bettor, and we know uV 3: ell Called fate' and ' desduy we like to wi - re As an excuse for breaking wiudow.panes And watchmen's heads, and sleeping in wrong places: The only re^l fate is Fashion.brains Thtt tight all other folly.when the Graces Give orders, calmly ".ive them up ihe rein;., And ape, contentedly, all their grimaces. Jfiagara Falls wearing Away-Improve- meiitH, &c. Correspondence of The Tubune. Niagara Falls, June 17, IS43. The good people of this village, as well us the visiters sojourning upon them, were not a little surprised as weil at amused on reading the letter of your Buffalo Correspondent, published in the Tribune of the 9th inst. He thinks that the Falls have receded a considerable " within five years, and that the Tower near Goat Island is unsafe '" He may be nervous: no one would question his sincerity, but his verdancy is really quite refresh ing to thoe'e: who tarry at the Falls sufficiently lonjr to get acquainted with them. Ttlis Tower was erected by the Messrs. For- tcrinlbSti. Every person who has visited the Falls since that time, and even for years before, must have noticed two or three large fragments of rock lying upon the very brink of the preci pice just below the Tower, and which one man with a good lever could, apparently, tumble into the fearful chasm below. It is twenty years since the writer of this first visited Niagara. These rocks, which ure certainly not three feet from the edge of the precipice, stand now as they stood then ; the only difference being the absence ol the water about their basa, it having been par¬ tially obstructed and turned into narrower chan¬ nels i>y the flood-wood which is fastened among the rocks above. It is to be hoped that no visitei will deprive himself of the impressive view which may be ob¬ tained from the top of the Tower, in consequence of the groundless fears expressed by your corres¬ pondent. Since my la6t, General Whitney, of the Cata¬ ract Hotel, has made extensive improvements in the establishment, having added about eighty feet to his main building, of stone, which is 'stuccoed' or 4 rough-cast,' as they term it here ; so that he now presents an imposing front of about two hundred feet on Main.street. On tlu lower floor of Ulis addition he has fitted up a fine and spacious Ladies' Dining Hall, while the up¬ per ones are finished off into commodious private parlors and bed.rooms, the whole arranged with new und beautiful furniture. "Besides this, he has joined to his main building on the south, by a high covered-way, a large three-story slone build¬ ing, which projects directly into the beautiful rapids between Coat Island and the American shore. The upper stories of this building arc di¬ vided into delightfully cool and pleasant lodging. rooms, the beauties and advantages ol" which are enjoyed almost exclusively by bachelors and ' gentlemen without ladies'.the tender sex never being taken across to lodge there. On the south end and immediately over the water ure two broad piazzas, commanding a fine view of the American rapids, the bridge, the islands, the river above, and the Canada shore beyond. Travel the world over, and you cannot find a more deli¬ cious spot to indulge in an early morning prome¬ nade, or puff away your evening cigar; In the basement is an artificial reservoir bountifully stocked with the far-famed bass and masenlongc of the Niagara, from which the table of the Cata¬ ract is supplied. When I add to this, that under the same roof you may find warm and cool bath:; at a moment's notice, but more particularly when you try all these things experimentally, and wit¬ ness the kind attentions of Gen. W. and his sons, together with the order, system, prompt¬ ness and stillness with which every thing is done. I think you will be ready to admit that the " be¬ longings" and " findings" of the Cataract coulii not well be improved. 1 must not forget to men¬ tion another addition to the traveler's jeomioil. made since my last visit, which is a fine bath- house erected by the Messrs. Porter on Bath Isl¬ and, where warm and cold baths may be obtain¬ ed, but the crowning charm of which is a large plunging bath. A 'float' upon the "darkly, deeply, beautifully" green waters of the Niagara with the thermometer at 80° is a luxury which might cheat even the -rout of its victim." But lest 1 should bestow too much of ray ten¬ derness upon you at once, 1 will c lose, proposing, however, with your permission, to commune somewhat frequently with yourself and your read¬ ers, during my future journey rags. Very respectluilv, yours. &c. Robert Ramble. A Snake Story.." But here comes our rirs; snake story. In answer to some querv about snakes, our landlord at Woodville had* replied that there was a smart sprinkle of rattlesnakes on Red Run, aud that it was a powerful nice day to sun themselves. We were now drawing near to the dragou district, and began to experience that vibratory sensation belonging to snake terror, when lo! a crackling and rustling of leaves and sticks on our left, and there, sure enough, w.;> a living snake! It was not, indeed, a rattlesnake, but a very fierce, large, and partly erect, black one, with a skin as shraeyas if just polished with patent blacking, a mouth wide open, and aston ishingly active tongue. Several feet of head and neck were visible, but how many of body and tail were concealed can never be told except by alge¬ bra ; for when, with curiosity still stronger than fear, the driver and myself got out for a nearer inspection, not only did her ladyship increase her vengeful hissing, but she was joined in that un- pleasant music by some half dozen concealed per. formers; and then our new and yet long acquain¬ tance, instead of vanishing, as had been supposed, on our nearer approach, darted head-rbremost at us, (and believe me, reader.) in the true Western style.like4 greased lightning.' Had a boa made that attack, our retreat could not have been marc abrupt and speedy : we pitched and tumbled into our wagon; and, on looking round, our ciieen snake was leisurely retiring, attended bv more oi her subjects than we even dared to shake a stxk at.. Some of these were apparently infant black snakes, for the protection of which we then elm- jectured the dam (?) snake had endeavored to fri tirnidate us.in which attempt she had very r«;a. sonabie success." THE WARNING OF DEATH.

Thf.y tell me that my closing hour is near.

I know not if it is so.coming time

Has some few records that we may not hear

Without a dark inclining unto crime.

Make not mv heart the wizard or the seer,

But know'that if I perish in my prime. It cannot be till the weird sister handsThat weave mv thread of destiny shall tire,

And with their fatal shears clip off'the bands

That bind mc to Repentance and Desire.Never, till my own Destiny commands,And earth grows palled with me, shall I expire.

I shrink not from the ordeal:.ere my closeHow many may lament that I am here :

How many cheeks, where nestled long the rose,

With mc shall sadly change it for a tear:

How many times, self-willed, shall I opposeMy bosom to Remorse's venomed spear.

'

A thousand.yet I struggle to fulfill,In sadness and in mirth, a given round'

That bears no seeming guidance from my will,And hurries madly to itrs final bound ;

80 shall my lift-, untouched by mortal spell,Falter and fail mc when the lost is found.

*Tl»ls nonsense might have done extremely wellIn time* of old, whew people would believe

The kind of doggerel that all poets tell [' thiesAbout 'compelF and 'hell,' . grieve,' 'deave' and

tVe do kmvt bettor, and we know uV 3: ellCalled fate' and ' desduy we like to wi - re

As an excuse for breaking wiudow.panesAnd watchmen's heads, and sleeping in wrong places:

The only re^l fate is Fashion.brainsThtt tight all other folly.when the Graces

Give orders, calmly ".ive them up ihe rein;.,

And ape, contentedly, all their grimaces.

Jfiagara Falls wearing Away-Improve-meiitH, &c.

Correspondence of The Tubune.Niagara Falls, June 17, IS43.

The good people of this village, as well us thevisiters sojourning upon them, were not a littlesurprised as weil at amused on reading the letterof your Buffalo Correspondent, published in theTribune of the 9th inst. He thinks that the Fallshave receded a considerable " within five years, and that the Tower near Goat Island is unsafe '"

He may be nervous: no one would question hissincerity, but his verdancy is really quite refreshing to thoe'e: who tarry at the Falls sufficientlylonjr to get acquainted with them.

Ttlis Tower was erected by the Messrs. For-tcrinlbSti. Every person who has visited theFalls since that time, and even for years before, must have noticed two or three large fragmentsof rock lying upon the very brink of the precipice just below the Tower, and which one man

with a good lever could, apparently, tumble intothe fearful chasm below. It is twenty years sincethe writer of this first visited Niagara. Theserocks, which ure certainly not three feet from theedge of the precipice, stand now as they stoodthen ; the only difference being the absence olthe water about their basa, it having been par¬tially obstructed and turned into narrower chan¬nels i>y the flood-wood which is fastened amongthe rocks above.

It is to be hoped that no visitei will deprivehimself of the impressive view which may be ob¬tained from the top of the Tower, in consequenceof the groundless fears expressed by your corres¬pondent.

Since my la6t, General Whitney, of the Cata¬ract Hotel, has made extensive improvements inthe establishment, having added about eightyfeet to his main building, of stone, which is'stuccoed' or 4 rough-cast,' as they term it here ;so that he now presents an imposing front ofabout two hundred feet on Main.street. On tlulower floor of Ulis addition he has fitted up a fineand spacious Ladies' Dining Hall, while the up¬per ones are finished off into commodious privateparlors and bed.rooms, the whole arranged withnew und beautiful furniture. "Besides this, he hasjoined to his main building on the south, by a

high covered-way, a large three-story slone build¬ing, which projects directly into the beautifulrapids between Coat Island and the Americanshore. The upper stories of this building arc di¬vided into delightfully cool and pleasant lodging.rooms, the beauties and advantages ol" which are

enjoyed almost exclusively by bachelors and' gentlemen without ladies'.the tender sex never

being taken across to lodge there. On the southend and immediately over the water ure twobroad piazzas, commanding a fine view of theAmerican rapids, the bridge, the islands, the riverabove, and the Canada shore beyond. Travelthe world over, and you cannot find a more deli¬cious spot to indulge in an early morning prome¬nade, or puff away your evening cigar; In thebasement is an artificial reservoir bountifullystocked with the far-famed bass and masenlongcof the Niagara, from which the table of the Cata¬ract is supplied. When I add to this, that underthe same roof you may find warm and cool bath:;at a moment's notice, but more particularly whenyou try all these things experimentally, and wit¬ness the kind attentions of Gen. W. and hissons, together with the order, system, prompt¬ness and stillness with which every thing is done.I think you will be ready to admit that the " be¬longings" and " findings" of the Cataract couliinot well be improved. 1 must not forget to men¬tion another addition to the traveler's jeomioil.made since my last visit, which is a fine bath-house erected by the Messrs. Porter on Bath Isl¬and, where warm and cold baths may be obtain¬ed, but the crowning charm of which is a largeplunging bath. A 'float' upon the "darkly, deeply, beautifully" green waters of the Niagarawith the thermometer at 80° is a luxury whichmight cheat even the -rout of its victim."

But lest 1 should bestow too much of ray ten¬derness upon you at once, 1 will c lose, proposing, however, with your permission, to communesomewhat frequently with yourself and your read¬ers, during my future journey rags.

Very respectluilv, yours. &c.Robert Ramble.

A Snake Story.." But here comes our rirs;snake story. In answer to some querv aboutsnakes, our landlord at Woodville had* repliedthat there was a smart sprinkle of rattlesnakes onRed Run, aud that it was a powerful nice day tosun themselves. We were now drawing near tothe dragou district, and began to experience thatvibratory sensation belonging to snake terror, when lo! a crackling and rustling of leaves andsticks on our left, and there, sure enough, w.;> a

living snake! It was not, indeed, a rattlesnake, but a very fierce, large, and partly erect, blackone, with a skin as shraeyas ifjust polished withpatent blacking, a mouth wide open, and astonishingly active tongue. Several feet of head andneck were visible, but how many of body and tailwere concealed can never be told except by alge¬bra ; for when, with curiosity still stronger thanfear, the driver and myself got out for a nearer

inspection, not only did her ladyship increase hervengeful hissing, but she was joined in that un-

pleasant music by some half dozen concealed per.formers; and then our new and yet long acquain¬tance, instead of vanishing, as had been supposed,on our nearer approach, darted head-rbremost atus, (and believe me, reader.) in the true Westernstyle.like4 greased lightning.' Had a boa madethat attack, our retreat could not have been marcabrupt and speedy : we pitched and tumbled intoour wagon; and, on looking round, our ciieensnake was leisurely retiring, attended bv more oiher subjects than we even dared to shake a stxkat.. Some of these were apparently infant blacksnakes, for the protection of which we then elm-jectured the dam (?) snake had endeavored to fritirnidate us.in which attempt she had very r«;a.sonabie success."
