GIRO D’ITALIA 2017 - THE EVENT LINE

The Legend of the "Maglia Nera“ – La “Maglia Nera” was a black jersey awarded as a symbolic prize at the Giro (between

1946 and 1951) awarded to the rider to finish dead last in the race. Ironically there was real competition to win this

particular jersey. There were legendary struggles to see who could waste the most time and capture the jersey. Each rider

employed tactics such as hiding in bars, barns, and behind hedges, or even by puncturing their own tires in order take

home the legendary jersey.

STAGE 1-2-3 SARDINIA The 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia kicks off with three stages on the picturesque Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Our special

jersey design incorporates the traditional Sardinian lapwing bird on the rear, intertwined with the infinity symbol to symbolise

love. It also ties in nicely with the 100 Giro d’Italia logo. Above the lapwing are the names of the start-finish towns for each

stage. The inside neck of the jersey is inscribed with “The infinite island” because of the longevity of its inhabitants. While on

the front is the Sardinian flag. The jersey’s crystal blue color represents the Sardinian Sea.

STAGE 11 - BARTALI Stage 11 will start in Ponte a Ema, Florence, the birthplace of the celebrated Gino Bartali, winner of 3 Giro d’Italia titles and 7

King of the Mountains jerseys. But it’s for his even more incredible efforts to aid the resistance in World War II for which we

honour him with this jersey. He delivered secret messages, smuggled refugees in his bike trailer, and hid a Jewish family in his

cellar. All of which only came to light after his death. The back of the jersey bears his famous quote, “Good deeds are done,

not spoken about. Some medals hang on the soul, not on your jersey.”

Stage 16 runs from Rovetta to Bormio, traversing the Stelvio Pass along the way. This magnificent climb tops off at 2,757

meters and is this year ’s Cima Coppi. This title is given to the highest peak in each Giro edition and is named after Fausto

Coppi himself. He won an astonishing 5 Giro d’Italia titles and 3 King of the Mountains jerseys. We honour this legendary

rider by placing his nickname “The Heron” on the inside neck band of our jersey.

STAGE 21 MONZA-MILAN This unique jersey is a celebration of the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia. This final stage finishes in Milan, just as it did in its first

edition back in 1909. We titled this jersey the “Invincible wave”, as this was La Gazzetta dello Sport’s headline announcing their

creation of the Giro nine months in advance of its first edition. On the backside of the jersey is a stylization of Milan’s magnificent

Gothic cathedral.
