Theme Decorations

Submarine

The large 3D submarine is constructed out of cardboard and made to fit together like a puzzle. The image of the sub was transferred directly onto the cardboard (2x’s) using the Room Decorations Transparency Book.

The two sides of the submarine are joined together using a series of small pieces of cardboard that have been cut-to-fit the size of the sub. Slits cut into the two sides serve as joining points.

The “floating” submarine is being held in place by a wooden frame. This frame will need to be large & sturdy enough to both balance and hold the weight of the cardboard. This project would be a great way to involve those in your church family who enjoy building things!

Camouflage the frame using items that resemble kelp/seaweed or with blue/water patterned paper (Oriental Trading, teacher supply stores)

Bubble Jet machine—air bubbles coming from sub

Foam dots painted black—rivets along the side

Flashlight—submarine lights

Hang small subs underneath the large one using fishing line

Theme Characters & Submarine scenes

Trace, paint and mount each character onto cardboard/Styrofoam to create freestanding figures. Scenery for skits is also provided in the Room Decorations Transparency Book.

Coral Reef (painted background) & Photo Spot images

This underwater scene can serve as a backdrop for the photo spot images—scuba diver and oyster shell.

Brightly colored paint

Ruler (sea urchin spines)

Shimmery pearl-colored paint (oyster shell)

Ball/balloon (Pearl--painted with pearl-colored paint)

A PDF version of this underwater scene is available within the Resources tab of the Bogard Press VBS website. http://vbs.bogardpress.org/2017/resources/index.html

Coral Reef & Sea Creatures—3D

A variety of both store-bought, natural & handmade items was used to achieve the conference example. Use what works for your church and your VBS budget! Be creative with the look of your coral reef! Invite your children/grand-children/church children to help make the pieces!

By layering the items and using a variety of colors and sizes, you can add depth and interest to your coral reef. If space is limited, consider making smaller vignettes of coral and placing them in different places around the church building.

Large Coral—pool noodles (whole) or cut apart to form smaller groupings of coral. Spray-foam insulation sprayed onto boxes, bowls or cups.

Sea Anemones—painted toilet tissue rolls, frayed on one end & grouped together.

Page 4: Theme & Lesson Décor - Bogard Pressconference.bogardpress.org/2017/images/pdf/Theme and Lessons Decor.pdf · patterned paper (Oriental Trading, teacher supply stores) ... Small fish/sea

Sea Sponges—car washing sponges, bath body poufs

Eels—Pipe wrapping insulation (self-adhesive had yellow strip), construction paper head, google-eyes.

Seahorses—trace and paint using the image from the Room Decorations Transparency Book. Enlarge the seahorse image and shape the outline of it using chenille stems. Curl the tails of the seahorses around some of the coral.

Seaweed/Kelp—dried corn stalk leaves collected while they are still green then laid flat in the sun to dry. Spray with clear lacquer/shellac for sheen. Feather-like boas (craft store) will also give the appearance of seaweed.

Branch-like Coral—tree branches sprayed with brightly colored spray paint. Collect dead limbs/branches or cut some from bushes and trees now, before they begin to bud. Spray insulation can also be added to make thicker pieces. Chenille stems (pipe cleaners) can also be twisted together. Unassembled tropical flower leis can be added to chenille stems.

“Brain Coral” & Sea Urchins—Styrofoam balls cut in half with *cotton beauty coil attached & painted. *VBS 2016 Add chenille stems or painted bamboo skewers to make sea urchin spines. *Consider the age of your students!

Schools of Fish—chenille stems bent & twisted at one end to form fish. Group like colors together and hang with fishing line (*swimming the same direction)

Jellyfish—small clear shower caps (bell), curling ribbon (tentacles). Large clear trash bags (bell), strips of trash bags (tentacles).“Swimming” Clown fish— www.fantasticfloatables.com

An Aquatic Display is available in the VBS Sample Kit, as well as, a separate item for purchase with the VBS 2017 curriculum. This display comes printed in full-color artwork and will need to be cut out and assembled to create a freestanding display. An instructional video of this assembly process is available within the Resources tab of the Bogard Press VBS website. http://vbs.bogardpress.org/2017/products/index.html

Bible Lesson Décor Lesson 1: The Father’s Son

Construct a 3D stable using 1x4s. The grain of the wood can be darkened/ accented using a torch.

Place a dove decoy (sporting goods) in nest of hay within the rafters of the stable.

“Hay/straw”—Raffia (large bundles from craft store) Mary and Joseph need to be proportional to the stable & manger. Use the

Lesson 1 Bible scene from the Room Decorations Transparency Book to help achieve this look.

The manger can have ‘hay’ added underneath Baby Jesus by tracing the manger and the baby images separately. Glue the ‘hay” into place then layer the baby on top and secure with glue. A small piece of flannel can be added underneath the baby for added texture.

Construct 3D puzzle-like sheep using cardboard, the sheep outline (Room Decoration Transparency Book) and cotton beauty coil (beauty supply store).

Stars suspended from the ceiling with fishing line create the look of a night sky.

Lesson 2: The Temple’s Teacher

Construct a 3D railing using pieces of cardboard or empty wrapping paper rolls.

Add scrolls (paper rolled onto dowel rods) to the hands of the doctors. Fabric can be draped from the ceiling to create curtains.

Lesson 3: The Disciples’ Leader

Repurpose the airship from VBS 2016 by trimming it down to fit in front of the painted background.

James & John (mending their nets) can be added to the scene by placing them inside the ship.

Attach a fishing net (craft store) to the hands of James & John. Add a piece of white or tan fabric to the background to resemble the look of

a sail. Place small shells & toy/paper crabs on the floor, so that it resembles a

beach. Hang seagull images from the ceiling with fishing line.

Lesson 4: The People’s Healer Make a small wooden bed with a cardboard platform to hold the pillow,

blanket and little girl. Trace, paint and attach both images (laying and sitting) of the little girl to

cardboard for making this scene interactive. _________________________________________________

Add the little girl’s parents behind the bed being sure to make them proportional to the bed.

Attach painted Styrofoam rocks to the background for added interest. Drape fabric to form a curtain. Add sandals and a rug in front of the bed.

Lesson 5: The World’s Savior

Both the crucifixion and empty tomb scenes can be combined into one large interactive teaching tool.

Trace and paint both scenes (crucifixion & empty tomb without tombstone) onto separate pieces of paper/cardboard/poster board.

A box set on its side can serve as a prop for both scenes— Rock—add spray insulation painted grey/brown to the

closed end & the sides of the box. Attach artificial flowers/greenery to the inside edges of

the open end of the box. Drape these out when scene is changed.

Construct a removable tombstone to ‘roll away’ Trace & paint the image of the three women coming to the tomb (Room

Transparency Book). Trace a large rounded rectangular shape around the group. Paint the extra space (sky & land) to match the empty tomb background.

Trace & paint the image of the Roman soldier (3x’s) so that the group is similar in proportion to the group of women. Trace a large rounded rectangular shape around the group. Paint the extra space (sky & land) to match the crucifixion scene background.

o Attach the two groups back-to-back on a piece of cardboard. Use the bases from cd holders to form stands.
