Primeros Pasos
¿Cuándo me toca entrar a mí?...
5
The First Steps
How the idea came about
We felt a need to change the way in
which English was taught in school, not
because what we had before wasn´t working,
but to provide a renewed motivation for the
teachers and pupils. It just so happened that
the year in which the new subject was to start,
a native language assistant with experience in
theatre was about to join the school and so
everything just fell into place.
After attending various courses in
mutiple intelligences, cooperative work and
attending other colleges´seminars, it occured
to us that Theatre could be an interesting idea. Both the English teacher and assistant teacher have a
background in Theatre and although they didn´t know eachother it was decided that they jump into the deep
end and start the THEATRE IN ENGLISH Project.
It was obvious from day one that we couldn´t begin right away with the plays, first we would need to
work on body movement, artistic expression and other skills to gain confidence and ability. We knew that a
general routine is important for young learners so the following is how the classes are structured. Here we knew
we had to look at the mulitple intelligences and cooperative work.
Mulitple intelligences
- Verbal- linguistic In theatre they use the language to express their feelings, in certain games they
have to use English expressions and of course phrases/lines and songs and poems.
- Mathematic/logic: In many attention games they have to use this intelligence. Also, they need this to
count the songs rhythms. What’s the timing of the song? When do I have to come in?
- Natural: In many theatre games we imitate animals. How they move… How they interact with
eachother, what realationship they have with eachother. There are animals in almost all the plays, for
example, in the Lion King or The Jungle Book.
6
- Visual/ Spacial: In most warm-up games and in many rehearals they have to imagine or visualise.
spaces and objects..
- Body/Kinesthetic: Perhaps it´s clearer in theatre as the body and mind´s capability function as one in
order to express ideas, feelings, show feelings, and generate activites with the body.
- Intrapersonal: We usually work on this in certain individual exercises to express feelings with the
body.
- Interpersonal: In almost all the exercises that we do we are usually in pairs or groups and it’s in these
exercises that they have to interact with eachother and express feelings, give opinions, reach
agreements, make decisions… On the otherhand, we also work on the acquisition of different roles in
theatre games.
Cooperative work;
There’s nothing more cooperative that theatre. They help eachother, work with one anotherin pairs or
groups and the final result is good group work.
Although strangers, Maite and Gavin both had similar ideas on how they wanted the subject to be and
began work immediately on the project. What was clear from the beggining was that by the end of the year we
wanted the 5/6 years olds to be to perform a play. We knew it would be a lot of work and very challenging but
that it would all be worth it. We would teach 4 classes, so we would choose 4 plays: Peter Pan, Snow White,
The Jungle Book and The Wizard of Oz. Each of the plays would contain 3 or 4 songs and choreographies
A new project needs a new space
As we introuduce new projects, it becomes clear that any part of the college can be used for
educational purposes and for that must be coherently organised according to our new projects and programs.
The creativity can help take advantage of common spaces, like in the case the Salón de Actos. From
this viewpoint, the space is converted into a didactic space, as it allows us to define the learining experience
and permits that we créate a stimulating environment for the development of our pupils.

La Clase
Esquema diario:
1- Estiramiento: Les enseñamos
varios tipos de calentamientos (de
pie, de suelo, en parejas). Lo
utilizamos como una rutina de
entrada a clase y es una manera
de estirar y calentar el cuerpo para
que no haya posibles lesiones y es
una manera de que ellos sean
conscientes de su cuerpo y de
cómo se mueve. También
trabajamos muchísimo vocabulario
en inglés. (ver anexo.)

The Class
Obras de teatro
1. Stretching: We begin the classes with various types of strectching, standing, sitting or in pairs. We use
this always as the first routine in the class and as a way of warming up to rule out any posible injuries
to the pupils. During the stretching, we use a wide range of vocabulary, which include, body parts,
numbers, alphabet… (See appendix)
2. Warm up games: Over the course of the year we have developed and worked on group games aimed
at various skills, such as, building trust, building confidence, vocal work etc.
3. Songs and Choreography: For 5/10 minutes we work on songs and choregraphies that will eventually
play a part in the final plays. We use a variety of songs, from rock to pop to hip-hop. In general, the
songs plays a big part in motivating the pupils and we choose them carefully so that we can get the
most out of the pupils.
4. The Play: Around November we begin work on the plays. The roles are established and discussed in
depth. We have to take into consideration that not of the pupils want to be on stage and want to be
protagonists, for this reason, we try to make all the roles of equal importance and weight within the
play. If for some reason we see that some pupils are uncomfortable, we make sure that perform in
groups and not alone.
5. Relaxing: We take advantage of the last minutes of the class so that the pupils can relax. Here we
have various activities ranging from masages to sleep and meditation.
No obstante,

The Plays
(VER ANEXO…)
Choosing the plays
We wanted the plays to be known to the pupils to make life a little easier so we chose; Peter Pan,
Snow White, The Jungle Book and The Wizard of Oz. We begin by telling the stories in class and outlining what
we consider to be the 5 main most important moments in each play. In this way, the pupils become familar with
the character and the plots.
The Script
We knew from the start it wouldn´t be posible to perform the whole play so we decided to break down
the plays into 5 or 6 important scenes. As well as, simplifying the story we also decided to simplify the scripts
according to the level of English of the pupils. The idea was that each of the pupils would say at least one or
two lines in the play and that the play would last for about 20 minutes, however, we knew we had to be flexible
with the script and made changes throughout the rehearsals. The idea was to show the 20 minute plays to the
parents at the end of the course, all on the same day.
Assigning and creating characters
11
We specifically choose plays that had 15 or more key characters and in many cases had to invent
chraacters in order to make sure that there were enough for all the pupils, 24-26 in each class. What that meant
is that we sometimes doubled characters or added extra scenes that didn´t exist in the original play, for
example, in Peter Pan we added more lost boys and more pirates.
Regarding the characters and assigning them, we were lucky enough to have worked with the pupils
the previous year as well in English class, so we had an idea as to who would fit well with which character. That
said, the pupils weren´t also keen on playing the characters that we had assigned for them and so we would
give them the option to choose after if they would like to change or not. However, it´s important to say that for
them the idea of being the protagonist is not yet of importance. We try to make it clear from the beginning that
Theatre is is a cooperative subject and that working as a team is extrememly important to the final outcome.
Also, there are children who don´t like being the protagonist just becasue it´s not in their nature, and this we
have to respect. The most important value we must instill is that theatre is fun.
Choosing songs and choreographies
The songs we chosen carefully by Maite and Gavin and we in choosing them, we try to take into
account the underlying story of the play. We tried to mixsongs from the actual play with modern day songs. For
example, in Peter Pan we used the song “ Never smile at a crocodile” for the crocodile scenes and then Lenny
Kravitz “Fly away” for the flight scenes. The idea behind using modern songs was to get the máximum
motivation from the pupils.
Costumes and Make up
By having a small budget for the Theatre it allows us to buy some basic things which can be used for
daily activities or for the plays (swords, hats etc). More or less one month before the premiere, we send an
email to the parents with a list of possible ideas for the characters´ costumes. Also, the email goes out to the
tutors who help us to complete some of the costumes at the last minute, either by making masks or helping to
paint faces, which was the case for The Jungle Book.
The make-up was completed usiing images from the internet and some of the mothers on the day of
the premiere came in to give a helping hand. We prepared a box for each class, in which included the make-up
and printed images of the characters and a list of characters.
Family involvement
The families played an important role in the overall theatre process. Not only did they help us with the
costumes and make-up but also by helping the pupils at home to remember their lines. Most of the script is
learnt in class through weekly repetition, but sometimes and especially when there was a holiday coming up,
we asked the parents to help with some homework. The feedback we got from the parents was very good as
they felt happy being involved with the project.
Programs, Photos and Presentation videos
As the big day approached, we made sure that all of the loose ends were tied up. From the begininng
of the course we collect potos and videos of each of the classes in order to make a final year program to take
home, which also serves as a lovely reminder of the whole process and something for them to look back on in
years to come. The presentation videos before each of the plays start make a good introduction and give us
time to get pupils on and off the stage ready for the next plays.
12
What we noticed
Primeras sencaciones
empezaron a hacerlo. Venían con ganas de aprender y
participar.
no habíamos percibido.
Student feedback
The first thing that called our attention was the increase in motivation of the pupils compared to in
English classes. That doesn´t mean that they didn´t come to English class happy, but the fact that they were in
a new space (theatre) doing something exciting new and fun helped with the motivation. Those that before
hardly participated in English class did so in Theatre class, and this year has been no different.
We also discovered some hidden talents within the pupils. Some of these talents can go unnoticed in
English class was really brought to our attention in Theatre class. It’s true to say that some of the pupils have a
real talent for Theatre.
Family feedback
The feedback from the families has been very positive. We asked for help with many things, such as,
costumes, make-up and scripts and the parents were very helpful. There are always questions and email to
answer about Theatre class and the plays and the parents will go to many lengths to help out, even asking for
time of work. Not once were we let down by the parents. All of the requests that we made for Theatre class
13
Dificultades
were met and the parents were more than generous with their time. We think having their children excited about
something really helped.
cuesta muchísimo estar quietos y guardar silencio.
He de
¿Debíamos evaluar a nuestros alumnos?
evolución o no.
New rules and the importance of silence.
Having the classes in the theatre has its advantages and disadvantages. The space itself is ideal for
given theatre classes, the sound, the space, the lighting all play a part of creating the illusion and excitement for
the pupils. The fact that it is such an open space has it’s problems, on the one hand, the pupils find it difficult to
15
remain silent and stay focused. There are curtains to hide behind, friends to talk to and other things that can
distract their attention.
We have to say that keeping all the pupils concentrated has been one of the biggest challenges, both
this year and last year. The first theatre classes are for teaching some of the rules of the new space; don’t
touch the curtains, don’t speak when people are acting on stage etc. Silence is paramount to making sure
theatre classes run smoothly and that we can get some work done. When it’s time to start work on the plays,
after the warm up games, we make sure that everyone knows there must be silence. We also found it important
that there be two teachers in the space, one to be on stage and the other to vigilate from the wings.
Concentration
One of the other difficulties we faced was that the pupils didn’t know when it was time to enter or leave
the stage. The capacity for them to remember all the details about when to say lines, enter and leave the stage
is far less than that of an adult. Despite the constant reptition of the plays, the pupils still didn’t have it clear
when to enter or not, so we needed clear signals to help. We used the songs and choregraphies to, both signal
to the group and also keep the pupils on their toes. The songs were evenly spaced throughout the play so the
pupils had to be ready at any moment to come on stage. The choreogrpahies enabled us to get a part of the
play done without having to know any of the lines, sowe could then start work in early September as the course
began. Working on the choreographies allowed us to focus on group work and coperative work as we paired
them up for many of the dance routines.
Technical problems
Music is an important part of theatre and essential for the plays. We were lucky enough to have
access to the theatre but unfortunately the music via the loudspeakers had to be controlled from control room
on the second floor. We felt it was imposible for one of us to stay in the control room for the entire class
controlling the music, so we instead asked for a laptop and portable speakers to be able to play music from the
stage. This menat controlling the sound and music was made easy and that any other I.T. issue we had was
dealt with swiftly by the I.T department.
The lighting was another issue we had to face. Again, the controls were in the control room and for
most of the year access to that was really not an option. We had to rely solely on the main theatre lights,
basically your average dull lighting. As we came close to the premieres, we were able to call upon to
technicians to start work on the lighting for the plays. We gave them some ligthting cue sheets and were able to
rehearse on various occasions with the appropriate lighting.
Not everybody likes theatre
As we said before, not everybody likes theatre. As a whole, we had a great response from the pupils
but were sometimes faced with children that didn´t want to dance, act, or be on stage. What could we do with
these children? Well, we didn´t want to forcé them to do things they didn´t want to do, but on the otherhand we
needed to encourage them to take part in some way. Generally, the pupils who were at first shy and not willing
to take part, came around and were able to take on some small role within the group. We both feel theatre can
help build confidence and help children express themselves in ways conventionally classes can´t, so that’s why
it’s important that everybody tries to take part. For those who weren´t keen on any protagonism, we weren´t
going to give them a lead role, but instead give them a role in a group or doing something in the background.
16
Evaluation
Should we evaluate the pupils?
We thought that it was difficult to evaluate but on the otherhand we felt it was interesting for the parents to have
some feedback as to how their children were preforming in class. For this reason, after much delibiration, we
decided to evaluate the learning experience with these four categories;
Participation: Did the pupil participate in class?
Use of English: Was there an attempt made at using English during the class activities. During stretching,
warm-up games and other moments within the class?
Respecting rules: Did the pupils respect the rules of the new space?
Personal development: Did we feel the pupil benefited from doing theatre and was there a progression from
day one to the end of the course?
