Charged with building the Georgia Techtennis program back to the level it was whenhe was a player, former Yellow Jacketstandout Kenny Thorne was named to thenewly-created position of Director of Tennisat his alma mater on June 30, 1998, becom-ing the ninth head coach in Tech men’s ten-nis history.

Thorne took over the reigns of the Techprogram after spending one season as theteam’s assistant coach and wasted little timein taking steps toward his ultimate goal ofturning the Yellow Jackets into a perennialtop-10 contender.

During the 2000-01 season, Thorne hasmade great strides toward achieving his goal.When the Yellow Jackets climbed to No. 20in the national rankings on April 11, theyclaimed their highest ranking since 1988,when Thorne was an All-American and teamcaptain.

After earning Atlantic Coast ConferenceCoach of the Year honors in his inauguralcampaign, Thorne boasted another solid yearin 2000.

Under Thorne’s guidance in 2000, fresh-man Roger Anderson became the first Techplayer to earn ACC Rookie of the Year hon-ors after leading the Yellow Jackets with a 24-8 singles record, including a 15-5 mark indual matches.

In his first year as head coach in 1999,Thorne earned ACC Coach of the Year hon-ors after guiding the Yellow Jackets to a sec-ond-place tie in the regular-season conferencestandings, a runner-up finish at the ACCTournament, an NCAA Regional berth anda final national ranking of 32 by the Intercol-legiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Senior Benjamin Cassaigne was namedthe ACC Player of the Year, earned all-con-ference honors and captured the ACC FlightChampionship at No. 1 singles underThorne’s guidance. Fellow senior Matt Cozadwas also named all-ACC and won the ACCFlight Championship at No. 2 singles. Cozadand sophomore Sergio Aguirre also won theACC Flight title at No. 3 doubles.

With Tech’s 1999 NCAA Regional berth,Thorne became the first person in ACC his-tory and just the second nationally to leadthe same school to post-season competitionas a player, assistant coach and head coachsince the current NCAA team dual-match for-mat was instituted in 1977. (Prior to 1977,team finishes were determined by an accu-mulation of points based on individual play.)Thorne helped Tech to NCAA play as a se-nior in 1988, as an assistant coach in 1998 andas head coach in 1999. He joined LSU’s JeffBrown as the only other collegiate men’scoach to guide the same school to NCAAcompetition as a player, assistant and headcoach under the current format.

Thorne earned an Industrial Engineer-

ing degree from Tech in 1989 and during hisfour seasons as a player from 1985-88, theJackets posted a 70-38 dual-match record anda 20-7 ACC mark, including wins over na-tionally-ranked foes such as Georgia andClemson in 1988, his final season. Techclimbed as high as 10th in the ITA nationalrankings during Thorne’s senior season be-fore the Jackets ended the year ranked 12thnationally.

Thorne qualified for the NCAA singlestournament in 1986 and 1988 and advancedto the second round on both occasions.Thorne also competed in the 1988 NCAAdoubles tourney with partner Bryan Shelton.

After turning professional in 1989,Thorne spent eight years on the tour, achiev-ing his highest singles ranking of 121 anddoubles ranking of 67 in the world. He wasalso a six-time participant at Wimbledon, theU.S. Open, French Open and AustralianOpen.

Thorne’s best career wins were over 1996Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, ATPNo. 11 Wayne Ferreira, Spain’s Javier Sanchezand Australian Mark Philippoussis.

He posted two career ATP doubles titles,one career Challenger singles title and fourcareer Challenger doubles titles.

An All-American in 1988, Thorne fin-ished his Georgia Tech playing career as afour-time All-ACC honoree and the careerleader in singles victories with 112.

He was also a two-time captain and anAcademic All-ACC honoree. Thorne was in-ducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall ofFame in 1995.

Thorne married former Yellow Jacketcross country standout and Tech Hall of Fameinductee, Bridget Koster, in 1990.

The couple has two daughters, Rachel,5, and Kenedy, 1, and one son, Zachary, 3.

Currently one of the ATPTour’s top doubles players,Atlanta resident Ellis Ferreiraworks with the Tech tennisprogram on a volunteer basis.

Ferreira assists the Yel-low Jackets with technicalaspects of their games witha special emphasis on

doubles play.In his career, Ferreira has captured 13

doubles titles and has won more than $1million in prize money. He consistently ranksamong the top-15 doubles players in theworld, and has been ranked as high as secondin the world. He recently advanced to thefinals of the U.S. Open in doubles play.

In January, Ferreira and his partner, RickLeach, won the 2000 Australian Open Doubles

Championship.He won his first career ATP Tour title in

Vienna and has tour wins in Sydney and atthe Mercedes Super 9 in Monte Carlo to hiscredit. In 1998, Ferreira captured the doublestitle at the AT&T Challenge in his hometownof Atlanta.

A standout collegiate player at Alabama,Ferreira competed four years for the CrimsonTide from 1988-91. He earned All-Americahonors in doubles for three years and wonthe Southeastern Conference doubles title in1989 along with his brother Clinton.

A native of South Africa, Ferreira has alsoplayed on his country’s Davis Cup team andOlympic squad.

Ferreira and his wife, Ashley, now residein Atlanta with their three-year-old daugh-ter, Camden.

1st Year at Tech

John Thompson, the newest memberof the Yellow Jacket family, was namedassistant men’s tennis coach in August2000.

A native of Buchanan, Mich., Thomp-son came to Tech from Myrtle Beach,S.C., where he was the owner and direc-tor of SET Academy. Thompsonorganized and directed elite junior pro-grams including tournament travel,junior camps and private coaching.

The 1997 South Carolina Tennis Asso-ciation Tennis Professional of the Year,Thompson coached several nationalplayers, including the fifth-ranked playerin U.S. Girls 14 and Under.

Thompson previously served as Di-rector of Tennis at Dunes Golf and BeachClub in Myrtle Beach for four years,where he was responsible for organizingadult and youth programs. While at

Dunes Club, Thompson coached 20 state,sectional and national level junior play-ers and developed a well-known andrespected junior program.

Thompson began his career in tennisas a student at Appalachian State Uni-versity in 1988. While not in class,Thompson worked as a tennis profes-sional at Yonahlossee Resort in Boone,N.C., where he was responsible for theentire junior program.

A finance major, Thompson alsoplayed collegiate tennis for one year atAppalachian State. He earned a bachelorof science degree in business adminis-tration in December 1993.

Thompson began playing tennis at age15 and immediately realized that it wouldbecome his career. He played junior ten-nis in the Western Section before walkingonto the Appalachian State team.
