Millfield Prep continues to lead the way in its field and a number of initiatives this year have had an extremely positive impact in the classroom.

The roll out of iPads for pupils and teachers during this year has brought many benefits. Work is being set and marked using Showbie, and information on Frog, our virtual learning platform, means that pupils have access to resources at any time. The coming year will also see iPads being used to aid the delivery of the new Computing curriculum at Key Stage One.

Reading is the doorway to success in all subjects so it is essential that we inspire and encourage our pupils to read. With the introduction of the Accelerated Reader programme in the Junior department, the children’s appetite for reading has grown and teachers have improved ability to monitor reading speed, comprehension and progression. From January to June, the Juniors read over 20 million words and took well over 1500 quizzes with an average score of 86%. Having witnessed the benefits we are now planning to role this out to other year groups.

Year 6 have trialled the ‘thoughtful learner’ scheme in their PSHE lessons. At the heart of this there are ten essential skills which teach the children to be independent learners, to be creative, reflective and collaborative when tackling new tasks. Pupils in Year 7 have practised mindfulness and in transformational breathing in their Drama lessons and this has benefited them enormously in preparation for their exams. This brain-training technique is about gaining control of thoughts and emotions. With these initiatives, we are providing our pupils with a toolkit and transferable skills that they will find invaluable as they progress through the school.

Outside the classroom we continue to achieve excellence and provide many opportunities. Millfield Prep won numerous National team titles, including the prestigious Rosslyn Park Rugby Sevens, David English Bunbury Cricket Cup, IAPS Swimming, Trampolining, Netball and 6 a-Side Football. We also celebrated individual and team champions in Fencing, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Golf and Multi-Sports. One hundred percent of our pupils have played in regular representative matches. This year we ran 155 different teams across more than 18 sports and we staffed an amazing 1,462 fixtures. All of this is in addition to an exceptional activities and clubs programme.

During the Autumn Term we had our ISI Boarding inspection and were rewarded with an excellent report. The inspector told us that “boarding parents and pupils were extremely happy”. We passed their national minimum standards with glowing colours and she commented that our pupils were "delightful, polite, courteous and disarmingly charming”, thus a real credit to us all.

The Governors continue to invest in the Prep School and at the start of the year we were delighted to welcome back rugby legend and Millfield Prep old boy, Matt Perry, to dig the first turf at the site of our new Sports Pavilion. It has been incredibly exciting to see the building and new netball and tennis courts progress during the year. It will provide spectators with a unique 360o view of sporting action throughout the seasons and will offer an impressive space for events and entertaining right at the heart of our sports facilities.

Our pupils and supporters have worked very hard to raise £20,000 for our selected charities this year. This is in addition to monies raised by the Parents’ and Friends’ Association who organised many events during the year for our parents, children and families.

We wish the Year 8 class of 2014, our interns, the Price family, Mr Brooke-Houghton and Mrs Carvia-Ruiz all the very best for the future. Mrs Blackman and Mrs McElhinney retired after more than 30 years’ service to the Prep School and we are grateful for their dedication and commitment over the years, both in and out of the classroom.

This book provides a glimpse into a rich and vibrant year in the life of our school and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Building our Sports PavilionFormer international rugby player, Matt Perry, was the guest of honour at the groundbreaking ceremony of Millfield Prep’s new Sports Pavilion. Matt, England’s most capped full back, attended Millfield Prep and Senior Schools for seven years from 1988 to 1995 and returned to ‘turn the first turf’ of the new facility. Matt was thrilled to be back and join in the excitement around the new pavilion, which he said would benefit generations of young sports men and women.

Academic SuccessScience Quiz National Final

Our Year 5 and 6 Science Quiz team took part in the final at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. Wyatt Walsh, James Maxfield, Loveday Binsley, Emily Bradshaw, Darcy Zander and Vinnie Gillespie answered questions such as “Which famous scientist had a unit of radioactivity named after him?” and “In which part of the eye will you find the photoreceptors, rods and cones?”. They achieved a very creditable eighth place from over 380 prep schools that entered the competition.

Maths and Chess Challenges

Some excellent results were achieved in the UK Primary Maths Challenge with gold medals awarded to Vinnie Gillespie, Tom Maddock and Polly Painter. A further five silver and five bronze medals were won and six Year 5 pupils took bronze awards.

Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge, aimed at pupils in Years 9-11. We were delighted to award bronze certificates to Niall Caley and Matthew Crofts, silver to Katie Maddock and gold to Oleg Aprelikov and Max French. Oleg and Max sat the two hour follow-up Olympiad ‘Grey Kangaroo’ paper and both were awarded Certificates of Merit.

Max French continued a successful year by taking part in the follow-up to the UK Junior Maths Challenge, known as the Olympiad. He achieved a gold medal, a result which placed him among the top 100 mathematicians in the country. Max also won a silver award in the UK Senior Maths Challenge. The Challenge is aimed at the top 20% of pupils in Year 13 (Upper Sixth) and below, so Max was six years young!

Max was invited to represent the England U12 chess team in the Stokes Cup (a four nations chess competition). However, he was already committed to an Open Chess Tournament in Saint Affrique, France, from which he returned with the prize for the Best U12 Player.

General Knowledge

We hosted the National Key Stage 2 General Knowledge Quiz, involving 12 teams in Years 3 to 6 from seven local prep schools. The team of Vinnie Gillespie (Capt), Wyatt Walsh, Alex Painter and Charlie Morgan-Hughes put in a very commanding performance to reach third place.

Dauntsey’s Dodecahedron

Rory Nicholson, William Smeed and Max French took part in this prestigious competition. After coming 3rd in Year 5 and 2nd in Year 6, Max went one better to win the competition. Rory and William did extremely well to be placed in the top 30 of over a 1,000 pupils who took part in the initial round.

Salters’ Festival of Chemistry

Ollie Whittingham, Tyler Olding, Katie Maddock and Ella Hoskings were delighted to win first prize in this practical-based competition at the University of Bath. Read more about their success on page 29.

Digital LearningSince last year’s introduction of iPads for Years 3 to 8, technology has enhanced learning across the curriculum. Applications have been used to inform, engage, recap, feedback, test and display work.

In their Geography mapping topic, the Juniors created maps to help guide an alien to their school from outer space. Using iPads and the String AR app, pupils hunted for the alien and had photos taken with him. This project held their interest and provided a focus for the end of the task.

In Maths, Year 7 and 8 pupils used an app called Explain Everything /Doceri to review topics and produced instructional ‘how to’ videos. It helped them think more carefully about the processes they used and how to explain them clearly to an audience.

Year 8 pupils studied film music and composed music for a scene using a selection of instruments. Their compositions were recorded into GarageBand on the iMacs using the audio interface, which enabled pupils to continue adding parts and effects for a professional result.

A Taste of DahlAs part of our World Book Day celebrations, we welcomed professional actor Anthony Pedley to Millfield Prep. Pre-Prep and Years 3 and 4 enjoyed his storytelling version of The BFG where all the major characters were brought to life in the well-loved tale of dreams, queens, giants and just a little whizz-popping. Afterwards, Anthony performed ‘A Taste of Dahl’ to Years 5 and 6. Using only the words of Dahl, Anthony took us on an autobiographical adventure. To honour Mr Pedley’s visit and Roald Dahl’s favourite colour, the school was brightened up when pupils and staff added splashes of yellow to their outfits for the day.

Swiss Ski TripBlessed with clear blue skies, plenty of snow and almost empty slopes, the pupils and staff couldn’t have asked for better conditions during their Easter ski trip to Fiesch in Switzerland. Apart from the great skiing they also enjoyed team games, tenpin bowling and a memorable night out at a pizza restaurant.

Boarding Life

Our Junior boarders entered into the fun with a variety of trips including a super day out at Tropiquaria, coming face to face with an assortment of creatures. The whole of Year 4 packed their overnight bags for a taste of life in house, staying over for the weekend with their boarding friends. They made cakes, pizzas and t-shirts, played ping-pong and table football and had fun on the inflatable assault course in the pool.

Segway Olympics, paintballing, inflatable fun and diving were some of the firm favourites for boarders this year. The whole boarding community got together for the Boarders’ Extravaganza, Bingo Night, Inflatable Fun Day and a memorable trip to Thorpe Park. Individual houses enjoyed their activities and worked hard to raise money for a number of charities, including Chestnut’s Charity Café, Berewall’s Pizza Night, Hollies’ Greyhound Rescue, Edgarley Manor's Mugs and Champion’s Sponsored Skip.

InternationalCommunity

Millfield Prep has a thriving international community with a number of pupils taking English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes, designed to help them listen, speak, read and write comfortably in English. This year, our EAL pupils have been exploring local culture and history, as well as practising their English, by going into the local community. Highlights included a trip to Glastonbury high street, where they bought a postcard and stamp and then sat in a café with a drink or snack to write a message to send to their parents; the Rural Life Museum, where they learned about life in Victorian England; and a visit to the famous Wookey Hole caves.

International EveningThe International Evening was fabulous with lots of people from all over the world. We had the chance to try food from other countries. There was a type of Spanish food called chorizo, which was my favourite. I really liked the Japanese snacks; they were delicious and tasted very exotic.

In dining room, we saw lots of flags hanging from the ceiling and on the tables. We sat on the African table with the Headmistress and talked to her about each other’s cultures.

“The best evening I’ve ever had”Yuri had an amazing dress and her presentation was about sadou and kadou. It was really interesting to learn about Japan’s tea and flower culture. We listened to Alex playing 'Waltz for Emily' on the saxophone very professionally. Others then talked about their countries and interests. I enjoyed Timur, Anton, Sergey and Artem singing Kalinka, a Russian national song. They made me smile and I couldn’t stop laughing.

At the end of the party, Billy and George, who are from China, said goodbye. I felt like I didn’t want the night to end!”

The Pied PiperWith their colourful costumes, disarmingly sweet ‘rats’ and a stunning set, the Pre-Prep children thrilled their audience with songs and brilliant character acting during their performance of The Pied Piper at the end of the Summer Term.

Eco DayThe pupils joined their Prep School friends to explore water environments on Eco Day. They experienced fieldwork on the levels with the Wild Fowl and Wetland Trust (WWT) at Westhay Moor and met experts from Water Aid UK and Carymoor as well as collaborating in river artwork and pond dipping.

ICT Explore DayEveryone took part in an exciting day exploring the wonders of computer technology. They programmed friendly Bee-Bots to plan their way around a grid of their own pictures. As pirates, they hunted for gold bars using metal detectors, and in the computer suite the children learned how to use graphics. They made books with recorded text, illustrating them with their own photographs and produced them with the photocopier.

Music at MillfieldArmed with baskets of percussion instruments, the Pre-Prep children set off to Millfield Senior School to take part in a music morning with the staff and pupils there. They were taught a South African song and learned about all sorts of different instruments and how they work.

Canine Partners The children worked very hard to raise money for good causes this year. By collecting a vast amount of used postage stamps, they donated a significant sum to their school charity, Canine Partners, who train puppies to aid local disabled children and adults. Other events throughout the year and Millfield Prep's Charity Committee added over £500 to the total.

M is for MakingContinuing phonic and colour themes, the children made delicious snacks such as pizza and porridge for the letter p, created spiders and snakes that were stripy and spotty, painted grey elephants for the colour table, designed beautiful mini gardens on plates and drew pirate maps. Hours of fun were had in their new mud kitchen in Forest School where they made hot chocolate using a gilley kettle.

L is for LearningUsing inspiration from home and the world around them, our young Pre-Schoolers have made great progress this year. Working through the phonic alphabet, the children found as many items as they could to illustrate the letters a, g, m, p, and s and explored colours.

A is for AdventurePre-School love the great outdoors and explore it whenever they can. They have seen the gardens at Lytes Cary, fed penguins and held snakes and tarantulas at Longleat. They also played in the sun (and rain!) at the beach and met interesting animals at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm.

Fun with MathsBringing their lessons outside, the pupils had great fun with cuddly ladybirds; sorting, grouping, adding up to ten and recording their findings. They also learned about 3D shapes by finding cubes, cuboids and cylinders at home and creating models at school including giraffes, garages, volcanoes and aeroplanes.

Chefs of the WeekEach week, Reception chose their ‘Chef of the Week’ who led the class in making delicious snacks. Their kitchen produced delights such as baked chocolate bananas and carrot cake, which helped them all learn safe knife skills and food preparation techniques. The class guinea pigs enjoyed the carrot peelings too!

Reception

Out and AboutReception loved their trips outside of school this year, travelling to local garden centres to stock up their garden with herbs, vegetables and fruit bushes. They measured and collected twigs in the orchard to make prickles for the clay hedgehogs they made. A highlight was their visit to Cranmore Railway Station, where they each bought a return ticket and saw the fireman load coal into the firebox to make steam. There was much to see, hear and smell on their journey.

Science ExplorersIn the Science Centre, @Bristol, Year 1 investigated forces and found out about space in the Planetarium with a Mars Rover exploration analysing rocks for signs of life. They handled snakes and lizards and stroked giant tortoises at Tropiquaria, naming the animal groups they belonged to.

Year 1

Changing SeasonsYear 1 marked the seasons by closely watching how things grow and change. In the autumn they harvested runner beans, carrots and onions from their garden and made a delicious soup. They celebrated the arrival of spring with a walk in the school grounds, finding primroses, violets, daffodils and tadpoles on their way. In summer, the pupils put their problem solving skills to the test to predict the growth of a beanstalk and were delighted with their first crop of raspberries.

History DetectivesThe children studied the history of toys and compared the different materials used to make them. At Burcott Mill the children were fascinated with the workings of the 600 year old building and made bread with a bag of flour from the mill. Going further back in time, they experienced a day at Cheddar Gorge, seeing the wonders of Gough’s Cave and heard about life there in prehistoric times.

Environmental StudiesTrips to Musgrove Willows and Westhay Nature Reserve brought wetland habitats to life when Year 2 studied the birdlife and minibeasts that thrive there. A history lesson at Avalon Marshes showed how people lived in Glastonbury 2,500 years ago. With the help of Wigglebert the worm from Carymoor Environmental Centre, the children learnt how to make compost and paper and they upcycled cardboard boxes and tubes to make a litterbug.

Music MakersAt the start of the year, each pupil was lent a violin and learnt a rhyme to remember how to hold it and the names of the strings. They practised diligently and at the end of Summer Term the parents were treated to a mini concert. They all played confidently and in time with each other – a wonderful achievement.

Knights and CastlesSir Teachalot delivered a day of medieval fun as pupils donned costumes, wielded ancient weapons and protected themselves from enemies (the teachers!). They even tried jousting and attacking a fortress with a miniature trebuchet. Inspired by Sir Teachalot's visit, Year 2 performed the story of ‘The Knight Who Took All Day’ by James Mayhew, dressing up and wearing items they had made.

Year 4 OrchestraAll pupils in Year 4 had the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice during the year. They practised regularly and delighted their audience with a performance at Millfield Senior School, alongside Katie-May Parsons in Year 8, who started playing with the Orchestra in Year 4.

“I learnt the clarinet as a result of the Year 4 Orchestra and still love playing it. Being part of the Music department is so much fun – I hope they all continue to play and enjoy music.” Katie-May Parsons

The Ancient EgyptiansA snake charmer welcomed the audience into the Recital Hall and the Junior cast transported them to Ancient Egypt… The mummifiers sent shivers through the crowd with their song, 'Make a Mummy', the percussion group accompanied the songs and the dancers performed 'Walk Like an Egyptian'. The pupils got into the spirit of the production by designing their own costumes and helping to make props, including masks for the gods.

Accelerated ReadersThe Accelerated Reading Programme was introduced at the start of the school year and encouraged a feverish consumption of books from the school library; some children were so keen they were spotted reading before lessons started! After reading books in their level, the pupils took quizzes to aid comprehension and as a group, read over 20 million words between them.

NSPCC Spellathon With the Juniors dressed in colourful onesies for Children in Need day, Sophie Richards from the NSPCC gave an assembly about the charity’s Full Stop Campaign and announced a sponsored Spellathon for the pupils. When she returned a few weeks later, Mrs Richards was amazed to be presented with a cheque for £2,816 following a tremendous effort by the children to learn their spellings and to encourage sponsorship from friends and family.

Glastonbury AbbeyWhen Year 3 arrived at the Abbey they were set to work in the Abbot’s kitchen, preparing meals for all his rich, important guests. They donned habits and learned about the three promises that novices had to make before they could become monks, as well as the legend of the discovery of King Arthur’s remains in the Abbey grounds. The children found out that pilgrims would visit the Abbey for medicines and they made their own toothpaste with cloves, salt and various herbs.

Now it’s the end of the show Hosanna Rock is over We do the last song and dance That’s the end of our nativity production The audience clap and congratulate us Mary, Joseph, the choir and cast Mrs Shayler says some kind words Now we can rest But there is just one more person to thank They are someone extra special They are truly super Thank you Mrs Seal

Geography Trip to Carymoor Environmental Centre

“We experienced life as a family living in an African shanty town. The ‘houses’ were very tightly packed and we were only separated from our neighbours by a beaded curtain. Water was coming in from the roof above our heads and was dripping down onto us, this was also creating mould. Here in England, if we are thirsty, we can simply get a drink from a tap or from the water fountain, but in Kenya, Malawi, Uganda etc. some people must walk miles for dirty water.

We walked around the rest of the site which consisted of the new landfill area, huge composting piles and the old landfill site. It was very interesting to see how the rubbish had been disguised to look like an orchard and a field using a covering of clay, grass and trees. A landfill site is a very big hole in the ground which gradually, over the years, starts to fill up with waste.

When we were walking, we noticed that there was some liquid spitting out of the ground; this is because the rubbish produces methane causing the groundwater to bubble. Our guide explained to us that when you are composting you must keep turning your compost over so that the heat that is produced keeps getting evenly distributed.

I really enjoyed the trip to Carymoor and it greatly helped my revision.”

Commonwealth DayFollowing an energetic start to the day with a mile run for Sport Relief, Year 7 took part in a range of Commonwealth themed workshops across the curriculum.

Corridors were suffused with the smell of delicious samosas cooking while next door in Art, a local felt maker taught pupils to make their own colourful felt flags. In the library foyer, visitors were intrigued by the giant inflatable architecture, as blue plastic bags were used to create a range of shapes which were then inflated to fill the space. After a themed lunch for the whole school, the heart of Africa could be heard beating on the hand carved drums. Pupils were inspired by thought-provoking history and poetry workshops and tales from West Africa. In a thrilling finale, the pupils performed a range of pieces on the drums and a convincing New Zealand Haka.

01 Preparing a giant paella at La Tasca in Bath 02 Inspired by William Scott at the Victoria Art Gallery 03 Picture of Week by Freya Lucas

Dear Octavia,

Thank you so much for taking me to Aquae Sulis. It was amazing and I had so much fun and now I feel so fresh.

I went in to the Tepidarium where I was massaged with scented olive oil. Next I went to the Caldarium, it’s very hot there and it’s meant to open up all the skin’s pores to let the dirt out.

Then back to the Tepidarium to get all the now dirty oil scraped off with a strigil. After that I jumped into the Frigidarium to close my pores.

When that was over I relaxed in the Great Pool and chatted to my friends, went to the shops where I bought some delicacies, and found out my future from the Augur who said I would have a good life; I hope he is right!

Thanks again and the very best from

Camilla

A Roman thank you letter by Loveday Hedgcock

A Taste of SpainA group of Year 7 pupils visited Bath for a cross-curricular experience. Their first stop was La Tasca, a beautiful Spanish restaurant opposite a great view of the river. Pupils had a Spanish lesson where they revised greetings and introduced themselves to the Spanish staff at the restaurant. They took part in the cooking process as a giant paella was prepared, made their own salad and tried tapas. After their meal, they headed to the Victoria Art Gallery for a guided tour of the work of William Scott, a local artist and drew their own abstract paintings and portraits inspired by his work.

Roman BathsPupils in Year 7 and 8 studying Latin found out about the building of the historic temple and bath complex and discovered what life would have been like for a Roman living in Britain 2,000 years ago.

Year 8

As their final year at Millfield Prep drew to a close, Year 8 set off to the Acorn Centre in the Brecon Beacons for a week of camping and activities. Amidst stunning surroundings, daredevil feats in the treetops and on the lake were bravely tackled. Prior to their trip, Year 8 enjoyed a week off-timetable, taking part in a number of workshops and finished the term with their much anticipated Leavers’ Supper. As well as being great fun, it was a time to reflect on their year, cement friendships and look forward to the next step in their school careers.

Familiar with MillfieldMany Year 8 pupils will move on up to Millfield Senior School and take part in the inaugural Nine at Millfield programme. To give them a taste of life at Millfield, they enjoyed a number of sessions there including a Sports Familiarisation Day. They had the opportunity to try out the excellent facilities and enjoyed team building games.

In the CommunityA number of pupils were able to offer their skills and knowledge to help younger ones in the school and further afield. Year 1 children in Pre-Prep benefited from some one-to-one reading sessions and Year 4 pupils at Brookside Primary, a local school, were given an introduction to French in a sharing and teaching workshop.

Salters’ Festival of ChemistryOllie Whittingham, Tyler Olding, Katie Maddock and Ella Hoskings took part in this practical-based competition at the University of Bath. Our team had to determine who the ‘thief’ was using a chromatography test along with the less familiar testing for non-metal salts. In the University Challenge the team used two chemicals to create a chemical thermometer, mixing them in the correct proportions to reach a temperature of 10.5oC after one minute of the reaction taking place. They were the only team on the day to be able to reach the correct temperature and were delighted to be awarded first prize and be praised by the judges for their methodology and teamwork. Their award was presented by Dr The Hon Alexander Todd, a prominent scientist and senior member of the Salters' Institute whose father previously won the 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Young Musicians of the YearOur musicians were celebrated in the final of Millfield Prep Young Musician of the Year awards. In a brand new format, the instrumental and vocal categories had been subdivided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The adjudicator, Mr Rhind-Tutt, Assistant Director of Music at Millfield Senior School, commented on the unenviable task of choosing winners from such an array of talent.Oska Zaky won the prize for Most Promising Musician. Juliet Grogan Poulsen was named Overall Best Instrumentalist. Eleanor Lewthwaite won the award for Overall Best Vocalist.

War, Peace and Revolution and Millfield Prep at the Movies were the respective themes of the Autumn and Summer concerts. Both showcased many ensembles including the junior choir, junior strings, percussion, wind band, orchestra, senior choir, harp group, guitar group and the much loved Year 6 ukulele choir. Year 7 entertained with their Famous in Film concert and a variety of informal and tea and music events were enjoyed by parents and friends. The whole school came together to celebrate the House Singing Competition and a win by Angles house. They were pleased to welcome the Director of Glee Club UK, Mr Richard Whennell, as adjudicator.

Year 7 followed suit, performing the swashbuckling tale of adventure on the high seas in search of the treasure of John Lewis. The Crimson Buccaneer involved kidnap, duels, chases and long lost love. Characters ranged from Ninja nuns to parrots charged with guarding the treasure map. The dashing Captain Angel led the all-female crew in pursuit of the infamous Red Kray and his band of twins. Much yo-hoing (but no rum) ensued before the tale was complete.

The Year 6 residents of Drumnadrochit and roving reporter, Katie Allbright, set out to prove the existence of the infamous Nessie in The Last Monster in Scotland. Leading on from monsters to mummies and powerful gods, the Juniors performed the colourful tale of The Ancient Egyptians.

“I liked making moustaches for the boys and turning the girls orange!” Phoebe Brittain, make-up artist

“Being pretty little Sally and displaying your ankles is harder than you think!” Harriet Lillis, Pretty Sally in Oliver

“The play was very exciting! I enjoyed the spotlight, the costumes and the make-up.” Georgia Newby-Vincent, actor in The Last Monster in Scotland

Year 8 pupils were first up with their rendition of Oliver. Undertaking a major production is never easy and especially so when the show is such a well-known and much loved one. The pupils were very convincing; workhouse brats, thieves and rose sellers and the lead characters were accomplished in their acting and singing. With a minimalist set and limited props, the cast created the atmosphere and sets themselves and did so most effectively. The stage crew and make-up team were very efficient and supportive; a great team effort.

Millfield Prep was proud to exhibit a number of paintings, drawings, sculptures and carvings during the Somerset Art Weeks Festival in September. The Festival involved 109 exhibitions, events and artist-led projects across Somerset and this was our first foray into the public exhibition and sale of pupil artwork. Money raised from the sale was donated to local charity, STAR. An opening event was held for pupils, parents and supporters to see the work displayed in historic Edgarley Hall.

Year 7s Commonwealth Day was a cross-curricular experience and provided plenty of opportunity for creative expression. They were able to try traditional felt making and worked in teams to build an inflatable structure to represent architecture from the countries of the Commonwealth.

Prep and Pre-Prep pupils were encouraged to ‘Draw Tomorrow’, the theme of The Big Draw, an annual celebration of drawing. Along with pupils from Millfield Senior School, they created a mural which decorated one end of the Senior School Dining Hall.

AthleticsSince the 2012 Olympics, much has been reported about ‘marginal gains’ and our athletes at the two National Finals saw both sides of this. We took 31 athletes, our largest team yet, to the National Prep Schools Finals. Both Jami Schlueter and the Year 7/8 girls' relay team claimed gold and we had nine other medallists. If Ade Karim had run 0.04 seconds faster in the U14 100m, he would have finished first. Even more unlucky was Georgia Dolan who was 1cm from gold in the shot. Tabitha Billingham finished 0.2 seconds from gold and 0.02 seconds from bronze in the U14 100m. Marginal gains were not really working in their favour this year.

The girls’ senior team won the County and Regional round of the English Schools Cup. At the halfway point of the National Final for the top 12 teams in the country, the girls were ten points from third place but sadly slipped down the order in the second half.

Our athletes were in action around the county during the season in a variety of events. Sports Day saw a new record in the 200m for Natasha Brookes. Three of our Year 8 athletes, Tyler Olding, Tabitha Billingham and Mia Russell, were shortlisted for the Year 9 county team.

Having watched how our Junior team competes, the future is safe. They have perhaps been on the more successful end of marginal gains in their competitions, so they are encouraged to work hard in their training for when their turn at the National Finals comes around.

01 The U12/U13 basketball team at a Central Venue League match

BasketballIt was an exciting season for the boys and girls U12/U13 basketball team. They played in the Central Venue League U14 bracket against club teams with strong basketball traditions. The team struggled during the first few tournaments, teasing out the occasional victory here and there and managing to scrape into third place on a couple of occasions.

However, as we saw key players such as Luca Jumabhoy, Guillaume Wilson and Jake Holmes rapidly develop their games, the season looked brighter. Solid contributions were also made by the Spanish trifecta of Elvira Garcia-Rodriguez, Lucia Martinez-Villasenor Echave and Daniela Nebot Marsol. Ed Ponting, DJ Crosby and Kim Hughes all played valuable minutes.

At the Somerset Championship Tournament, the team started off a bit shakily but then went from strength to strength, winning five of seven games. This set them up for the final match which they won by a single point under the leadership and excellent play of Danila Margevich, the teams unquestionable MVP.

We look forward to an exciting season next year with several returning players and new additions such as Zee Ahmed, Lee McKenzie and Gregg Cotter.

Cricket In July, the 1st XI team took on Bromsgrove School in the U13 David English Bunbury National Cricket Cup Final held at Oakham School. Bromsgrove won the toss and elected to bat first, but some strong bowling from Millfield Prep resulted in their opponents being all out for 54 runs. In response, the boys reached their target of 55 runs in the tenth over to give them an impressive ten wicket victory and the National title. The competition started with 1,100 school teams from across the country so this was a remarkable achievement for both the team and coaches.

The 1st XI made it through to finals day in the National JET Shield and just lost to the eventual runners-up, Bedford. The boys went on to convincingly beat St Olave’s to take 3rd place in the competition. The team once again retained the Somerset County U13 Shield by beating King’s Hall convincingly in the final.

The U11 Eight-a-Side Hardball team again won the County Trophy and represented Somerset in the West of England Regional Tournament, finishing runners-up.

The U12A side produced outstanding results, topped off with a huge win over Taunton Prep School in the County Cup Final by 172 runs.

Outstanding performances with the bat and ball were observed in all age groups and noteworthy accomplishments included the 113 scored by William Smeed for the U12A team against Cornwall County, 110 not out against Taunton Prep, 100 against St Olave’s in the

National JET Shield and 104 against Taunton Prep in the County Final. William’s brother, Henry Smeed, playing for the U11A team, also batted extremely well scoring 105 not out against Clifton College and 100 not out against Blundell’s Prep. Max Hancock, playing for the 1st XI, produced something special against Port Regis, taking 7 wickets for 6 runs and taking a hat-trick as well. James Broomhead, playing in the U11B team, also took a hat-trick against Blundell’s with figures of 3 wickets for 10 runs.

Both Junior Development Squads involving players in Years 6, 5 and 4 achieved good results against various County sides including, for the first time this year, Gloucestershire.

House matches produced some very good cricket; Jutes became Year 8 House Champions, in Years 6 and 5 Jutes and Saxons were joint winners, in Years 3 and 4 Jutes and Angles were joint winners.

Girls’ CricketThe Summer Term saw the introduction of girls’ cricket as a curriculum sport for pupils in Years 7 and 8. Running alongside rounders, athletics and tennis, girls’ cricket has been hugely popular. Having previously won the National title at Lord’s in 2012, expectations were high. The Junior and U12 teams were undefeated. In tournaments, the U11 team were victorious at Hazlegrove and the U13s were runners-up at King’s Bruton.

Cross CountryA record 23 primary schools took part in the five-match Mendip Junior League. Runners had to complete four races to count for the overall result. A consistent turn out and some impressive running in the Year 3 and 4 Girls meant we won overall. Congratulations to Jasmine Caley who was 5th overall. In the Year 3 and 4 Boys, Alex Painter won four races to win overall. The Year 5 and 6 Girls scored an emphatic victory with strong runs from Sophie Mabbs (2nd). In the Year 5 and 6 Boys there was a close battle between Millfield Prep and Springmead Prep with the latter winning on the last event. Ciaran Donoghue was our best finisher in 6th place.

In the Mendip Senior League Olivia Kinnear was best placed finisher with 4th place overall. Millfield Prep was equal first in the team event. Niall Caley won the Boys’ league with two wins and a 2nd place. Again, Millfield Prep won the team event. For the Year 8 Girls Alice Gray was best finisher in 6th and Millfield Prep finished second in the team event.

Oliver Haines-Francis (3rd), Ben Hoskings and Juliet Grogan Poulsen qualified to run for the Mendip area in the Somerset Championships and finished strongly. Oliver qualified to run for the Somerset team in the South West Championships, where he finished a respectable 12th.

With 600 schools starting in the National Schools Cup, it is always a tough call for a small prep school to qualify for the final. However, the boys were convincing winners of both rounds to reach the final at Southend High School; unfortunately, injuries prevented the girls qualifying from the regional round. In the final, Tom Weiss had a fantastic run to finish 14th, just ahead of Rory Nicholson who ran through the field to finish a stunning 19th (still a Year 7). The other Year 7s, Niall Caley and Oliver Haines-Francis completed the scorers followed by Harry Gardner and Stuart Rushmere. The team finished an excellent 7th.

At the Edgarley Relays top schools took part from the South West of England and as far as Cumbria.

Rory Nicholson missed the fastest run of the day by one second but he helped the team of Niall Caley, Ade Karim and Oliver Haines-Francis win by 24 seconds. This was the 7th win in 30 years and shows how high the standard is. Millfield Prep also won the ‘B’ team race. Alice Gray was 7th fastest runner in the girls’ race and she was helped by Olivia Kinnear, Susan Rogers-Coltman and Natasha Brookes to finish 3rd behind the winners, Queen Elizabeth Grammar. Millfield Prep won last year and have won it nine times in its history.

FencingThe fencing squad have had another good season. Georgia Timmins represented England at the Women’s U15 Sabre at the International Fencing Tournament Challenge in Poland. Georgia was the youngest in her age group and the first fencer to have taken part in this competition while at Millfield Prep.

The squad won both the Overall and the Boys’ and Girls’ cups at the IAPS Competition, which Millfield Prep hosted again. The winners were Georgia Timmins U14 Girls’ Sabre, Morgan Zaky U11 Girls’ Sabre, Oska Zaky U14 Boys' Sabre, Katie-May Parsons U14 Girls’ Épée and Oscar Plant U14 Boys’ Foil. The competitors won all four Master of Arms trophies, Katie-May Parsons and Becci Curwen 1st= U14 Girls, Morgan Zaky U11 Girls, Oska Zaky U14 Boys and Vinnie Gillespie U11 Boys.

At the finals Luca Jumabhoy was 5th in the U12 Sabre; he was also crowned South West Champion at Épée.

Becci Curwen finished the year 4th in the National rankings for the Leon Paul competitions for U13 Girls’ Foil.

The winners at the Easter Egg Competition were Ecaterina Sfiraiala, Phoebe Van Der Welle, Oscar Plant, Morgan Zaky and Oska Zaky.

Coach, Mrs Sue Benney, also had a busy season, winning bronze at the European Championships in Croatia and being selected to fence for Great Britain in both the World Masters, Italy, in July and the veterans World Championships, Hungary, in October.

Football Football had a good year, highlighted by the 6-a-side IAPS National Football Competition at Shrewsbury where the U13 team beat Chigwell in the final.

The 11-a-side U13 boys were knocked out in the quarter final by Whitgift, who went on to win the ISFA Cup. In the ESFA Cup the team sadly lost in Round 4.

The U12 team, playing 9-a-side, came up against a strong Winterbourne Stoke team in the 3rd round of ESFA and were unfortunately beaten.

The U13 girls, with a mixed Years 6, 7 and 8 team, played a few games at 7-a-side and progressed to the County Final.

The Junior football sides had mixed results with the Year 6 winning a game and Year 5 doing well, winning six matches, two festivals and only losing two games. The younger Year 3 and 4 teams worked hard and gained some good experience during the season.

GolfIt has been a very successful year for the Millfield Prep golfers. This has varied from Javier Calles Roman making his first birdie on a full length golf course to 12 pupils representing Millfield Prep Golf for the first time.

Charlie Goss and Freddy Zander represented the school at the Junior Cup in October, playing with Mr Vibert, coach and PGA Professional, at The Shire Golf Club to finish a creditable 8th out of 21 teams. Freddie Turnell joined Freddy and Charlie to play in the Somerset School Championships where Charlie recorded an excellent 8th place in a strong field.

The highlights of the year were Freddie Turnell’s win in the U10 division at IAPS and also Jack Hayes and Sky Pinto joining forces with Freddie to win the Junior Team IAPS at the prestigious Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club.

Charlie Goss had an excellent start to the summer recording three victories in local competitions and representing Somerset U14 for the first time, as a result of reducing his handicap by 10 shots! Despite an injury, meaning he missed out on the Millfield Prep Open, Charlie helped with start times and checking the cards and encouraged all the other golfers at the Millfield Prep Open and was an excellent non-playing captain.

The Millfield Prep Open held at Kingweston Golf Club gave Sam Pepler, Ciaran Donoghue and Javier Calles Roman a chance to represent Millfield Prep golf for the first time where they all performed excellently. The best result for Millfield Prep was in the U10 section where Freddie Turnell won, with Barney French following closely behind in second place. Freddie’s score was good enough to finish 6th in the overall competition.

A return to The Shire Golf Club for the Junior Open saw Freddy Zander, Freddie Turnell and William O’Halloran represent Millfield Prep in the Stableford Competition. Freddy Zander was 2nd overall, Freddie Turnell 3rd overall and William O’Halloran 4th overall, which led to an excellent and comfortable team victory. Freddie Turnell also won the U12 section of the competition.

Hockey (Boys)In the National IAPS competition the 1st team won through to the quarter finals before losing narrowly to the much fancied Bilton Grange.

As County Champions we competed in the West of England Finals, performing brilliantly to qualify for the National Finals at Cannock in May. From an original entry of 500 schools we played the top two teams from each division. In the first game with Bedford we came from behind twice to win 3-2. In our second encounter against QEGS from the north, we drew 1-1. In a superb re-match against Bilton Grange, the midland champions, we won 2-1. This meant a draw against Whitgift would qualify us for the National Final. We lead 1-0 for a long period and also had several good chances to extend our lead but two late strikes unfortunately eliminated us. It was hugely disappointing to have missed out on the National Final as we had come so close. However, the whole team represented Millfield Prep with pride and good humour. We also learnt a great new song.

Next year’s teams should be strong; the U12A team won all of their eleven-a-side matches and the U12B and D teams won all of their seven-a-side fixtures.

World Cup HockeyAt the time of writing, Simon Mantell, a former Millfield Prep 1st team captain, was playing for England in the World Cup; scoring the winning goal against India. It is very possible that some of this year’s cohort will follow Simon into the National team; there is certainly huge potential in the squad.

Hockey (Girls)Girls’ hockey this year has continued to shine. We have competed in single fixtures and tournaments for just about every age group and all pupils have represented the school from U8 to U13 level. We have a host of teams ranging from A to D, demonstrating the depth and talent we continue to have in all our year groups.

Multi-SportThe year has simply been amazing for multi-sports at Millfield Prep, with many pupils competing for the first time and excelling in every discipline. Multi-sports include pentathlon, biathlon, biathle, triathlon, triathle, tetrathlon, and many more. There is increased interest in these sports among our pupils which matches the growing trend nationally for multi-sport participation. As many as 36 of our pupils were entered into a single event with an average of just over three pupils per year group entering competitions throughout the school year.

The highlight was for Sophie Mabbs in Year 6, who became World Biathle Champion at the competition in Cyprus in October. Sophie is a very talented runner and an increasingly impressive swimmer and her result at the World Championships puts her in good stead for the future.

Domestically, the U13 Girls’ biathlon team of India-Rose Owen, Alice Gray, Alice Gouldby and Susan Rogers-Coltman, won titles at both the National Biathlon Championships and National Schools Championships, with the latter taking place at the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. More success came at the final major event of the school year with Alex Painter, Year 4,

and the Year 5 Girls’ team of India-Rose Owen, Ruby Smith and Charlotte Taylor, taking 1st place in their age groups at the National Schools Biathle Championships at Leweston School.

Pupils earned the chance to represent their country during the summer with Aurelio Calipa, Alex Painter, Ruby Smith and Charlotte Taylor competing at the European Biathle Championships in Portugal. In their respective age groups, Aurelio finished 4th, Ruby 6th, Charlotte 7th and Alex 2nd overall. Having led for most of the race Alex was just pipped on the last bend.

Following international duty, both Alex and Aurelio competed at the National Biathle Championships at Salford Quays in July. In what must have felt like a step down in competition, both Alex and Aurelio used their experience and became National Champions in their age groups. It was a fantastic way to round off a very successful year.

U11, U12 and U13 teams qualified for the IAPS Netball National Finals at Roedean School in Brighton. One of only two schools in the country to have got all three teams through.

NetballThe U13 girls finished the National IAPS group stages in top form and had earned their place in the semi-final v Twyford. Their skills and fitness shone through to win 10-7. This set up the second match versus Bromsgrove in the Final. They started strongly and kept up the pressure throughout the match to win 8-4 and were thus crowned National U13 IAPS Netball Champions.

The U12 team also finished top of their group at the IAPS Finals and played Dumpton in the final. The team was magnificent in the first half, winning 7-1, but got complacent and Dumpton came back to draw 7-7. With support and encouragement from their parents Alice Gouldby and Isabel Bartlett scored the crucial goals to make it 9-7. The U12s were the only team to not lose a match all day and became National Champions.

Dubai Netball TourFifteen girls accompanied Mrs Collins, Mrs Morgan-Hughes and Mrs Mitchell (Head of Netball at Millfield Senior School) to Dubai for a week of adventure, sun and of course netball.

The girls played matches each day while still managing to fit in a trip to the beach, the beautiful Grand Mosque and visit to the royal palace to dine with Old Millfieldian, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak al Nahayan.

In their final matches the A team played club side, Exiles, and then a mixed A and B team played Cottesmore and Exiles in a mini tournament. The red team were runners-up and the green team won. Emily Thomas was named Player of the Tournament.

RidingThe equestrian year began with welcoming new riders and ponies to the yard. Preparations began for the first inter school’s one day event, with cross country training and learning the dressage tests.

At the Stonar ODE in September 2013 Ella Hoskings came 5th with her new pony, Dax, and Talullah Bartlett came 1st in the 90cm and the 70cm, both on a dressage score of 21. At Stonar’s event in May 2014 Talullah improved her dressage score with an amazing 13 and achieved 2nd place on Ballerina. Issy Blackwell on Million Dollar Bill, Sophie Blackwell on Danny and Amelia Harris on Desperate Dan came 5th with Millfield pupil, Phoebe Locke. Talullah, on October Knight, and Phoebe were both 4th individually, and with Ella, the team cam 2nd.

At the Inter-Schools’ Eventers Showjumping, Millfield Prep riders had another great day with winners and numerous other placings.

It was exciting to follow Flo Norris’ progress as she and her ponies showed skill and determination to qualify for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show. Flo will compete at the event at the Birmingham NEC in October 2014.

Sport

At the Millfield Prep Grassroots Competition we had a fun filled day. Riding school ponies the team came 1st in Class 1 and individually Joel Hart achieved 4th and Lily Della Valle 5th. In Class 2 the team came 5th, in Class 3 the team reached 2nd place with Sophie Blackwell winning an individual 2nd. Finally, in Class 4, the team came 4th and Amelia Harris took 4th place.

During the inter schools NSEA JAS Competition at Millfield Senior School, the Class 1 team came 2nd and qualified for the Finals at Addington.

Ella Hoskings had great start to her British Eventing season, reaching 7th at Bovington Horse Trials and 10th at Bicton Horse Trials. Ella progressed well during the year to several wins at BE 90cm and is now doing well at 100cm. Talullah Bartlett is also having a great BE event season, competing in Pony Club area championships.

It was a delight to see some young Millfield Pre-Prep pupils working hard towards their Level 1 Stable Management, with all twelve riders succeeding in passing and gaining certificates.

During the summer, pupils competed at the Hurstpierpoint College National Schools and Pony Club Jumping Championships, held at Hickstead. The Millfield junior team included Year 8 leavers Talullah Bartlett and Ella Hoskings, who placed a respectable fifth out of 18 teams in the junior category. Millfield Senior enjoyed the best results in 42 years with their teams finishing first and second. The youngest member of the winning senior red team was former Millfield Prep pupil, Phoebe Locke.

RoundersAll girls in Years 3 to 7 participated in fixtures during the Summer Term, with only the full time U13 swimmers and riders missing out on representing the school. The weather disrupted play at the start of the season; however, over 90 matches were played with a total of 1038 rounders scored.

The U8, U9 and U11 Millfield Prep Tournaments were rained off but our teams won the U12 and U13 Tournaments and were semi-finalists in the U10 event.

The U11 girls qualified for the IAPS National Rounders but were unfortunate to lose out to a good side from Bedford Girls School. In the 3rd/4th play-offs, they worked hard as a team and showed fighting spirit to win 3rd place.

The 1st team girls travelled to Oxford to play in the Nationals. Due to fatigue and an extremely busy term, the girls didn’t perform to the best of their ability. They unfortunately missed out on going through to the final and retaining the trophy.

Rugby Tour, Dubai 2013Twenty four boys and three members of staff set off with their travel bags packed with smart kit provided through fundraising by their parents. They landed in Dubai ready for rugby, a taste of Arabian culture and, hopefully, lots of fun.

The tour started with a two-day rugby sevens event and the stronger of our teams played boys a year older and were quite simply outstanding; reaching, though just losing, the final. Our team in the U13 tournament won many of their matches in style. They also played 15-a-side matches against Dubai College and Dubai Exiles, winning the former and just losing the latter.

Off the rugby pitch, an entertaining half day was spent learning about the country’s culture and religion. A fine meal was provided which the group enjoyed immensely. At Ferrari World the boys rode the fastest rollercoaster in the world. An afternoon was spent ‘dune bashing’ in four wheel drive vehicles followed by a buffet in the desert. The final full day was spent under clear blue skies at the Wild Wadi water park.

The boys, staff and parents had an experience they will never ever forget.

“The highlight for me was the Arabian cultural centre, where we had a fascinating talk about the Arabian way of life. This was only capped by the magnificence of the grand mosque in Abu Dhabi; quite awe inspiring.”Tom Weiss

Downs Sevens

1st VII won convincingly against Moulsford 42-0. Playing sudden death in a thrilling final against The Downs, the U11s scored the winning try. This is the first time that a school has ever achieved the double at The Downs Sevens.

U12 were disappointed to lose in the semi-final after three important players were injured during the knock-out stages.

Rosslyn Park Sevens 2014The finale to the sevens season was the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens, the largest school’s rugby tournament in the world and the most prestigious event on the schools sevens circuit.

In the final, Millfield Prep won 26-5 against St Martin’s, Ampleforth. It was a truly outstanding accomplishment for the team to win Rosslyn Park, and it makes us one of only two schools in the country to have won this tournament eight times.

Not one of the opposition teams at Rosslyn Park managed to score more than a single try against us. This statistic gives an insight into the character and determination of this special group of boys and how well they played together as a team.

Without doubt, this has been the most successful sevens season ever for our 1st VII.

Alex Painter, Alex Sargeant, Ruby Smith and Santos Villalon were the top swimmers in their age group.

Sixteen swimmers qualified for the South West Regional Championships. This event is highly ranked in the swimming year and only includes the best club swimmers in the South West of England for each age and stroke. During this competition four extra National Qualifying times were gained. Alexander Sargeant and Polly Painter were the top swimmers in their age group.

Jamie progressed through to the semi- final match but unfortunately came unstuck against a very good opponent. Jamie went on to win his 3rd/4th playoff and took home the bronze medal.

A Wealth of OpportunitiesMulti-Activities take place on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and pupils are encouraged to try a variety of activities, building up to an award. Weekly sailing at Durleigh during the Autumn and Summer Terms resulted in pupils taking part in four regattas. Clay pigeon shooting at the Mendip Range and several kayaking trips have been popular as have climbing and caving expeditions for the adventurous. Environmental work at Shapwick Heath, helping English Nature, has seen pupils scrub bashing, tree felling, ditch clearing and path laying. A group helped teach languages at Brookside Primary School, and Millfield Prep based activities continued with climbing, art, badminton, squash, pottery and swimming.

Clubs GaloreThere are 140 clubs throughout the week for pupils to choose from. These vary from soft toy making and sugar craft to chess, sports, music and karate. This year saw the introduction of clubs to the sport fixtures website, millfieldprepsport.com, which is a useful tool for pupils and parents to see what is on offer and when. A highlight this year was the introduction of the Kit Car Club. Keen engineers and designers in Year 7 began with a standard kit car which they modified to make it more competitive. They will race the car in September 2014 and hope to qualify for the finals at Goodwood race circuit.

“Getting to actually build and race the car is really exciting. It is a great opportunity.” Sonny Mandil

“The children were absolutely brilliant, loads of fun, really well behaved and gave me a big lift each time they came out to run.” Steve Clark

A Home for HorsesThe school welcomed William Reddaway and his horse Strider during their marathon tour of every cathedral in England, known as Ride Round England. The children were delighted to meet Strider after an informative assembly in the spring term. Strider enjoyed a comfortable night in the Millfield Prep stables to recover from his journey the day before. A local horse, Billy, was rescued and looked after in our stables after the severe flooding at the start of the year.

A Mile for STARIt was a whole school effort as pupils and staff ran a mile to support the inspirational ultra-runner, Steve Clark, on his final 50 miles on a course around Millfield Prep. During the past year, Steve ran 365 miles across the Mendips to raise money for PROMISEworks and STAR, charities who support disadvantaged children and young people. The children and stalwart Mr Duke (who ran and cycled with Steve for a number of miles) managed to raise £1,600 in sponsorship.

Harvest AppealThe whole school supported World Vision and pupils used creativity and imagination to grow their money, starting with £5-£10, to raise funds to buy chickens, goats, mosquito nets, TB screening kits and all sorts of practical help for communities in need. There were some amazing individual and group efforts such as selling duck eggs, cake sales, naming a teddy raffle, selling squares on a treasure map, gardening and car washing, guessing the number of sweets in a jar and shoe shining at Clarks Village. The combined total raised was an impressive £1,500.

Sport ReliefThis was a fantastic event where the whole of the Millfield community, from Pre-School to Sixth Form, joined forces to raise money for the charity. Everyone at Pre-Prep and Prep started their day with a mile run, celebrated with special cakes at break time and received medals.

01 Year 5 pupils at Priddy Ponds on Eco Day

Fundraising HighlightsThe Carol Service collection of almost £1,000 was donated to Clic Sargent. Our pupils also performed at the Light up a Life service with a retiring collection in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice. Busking and collections from the Rock and Pop Concert went to STAR. The pupils also continued to perform and entertain the residents of Glastonbury Care Home.

Donations from Pre-Prep as well as Prep’s best bake competition, cake sale and a popular mufti day, raised money for Children in Need.

On World Book Day, STAR benefited from money raised by donations for pupils to wear yellow, Roald Dahl’s favourite colour.

Pre-Prep raised over £600 for The British Heart Foundation with a sponsored skip. They supported Canine Partners and Brainwave through stamp collecting and their Christmas Fun and Games. Year 2 took part in the annual Lions Club sponsored swim and money raised by their plant sale at the May Fair went to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Our Juniors took part in a Spellathon in aid of NSPCC and Anti- Bullying week in November. They raised over £2,780.

Year 6 girls ran a cake stall at the Edgarley Relays to show their support for Sport Relief and after the Year 6 play donations were made to Club House.

The annual hockey match played against Clifton College for The Bresnahan Cup raised money for A Life for a Cure, a charity set up to seek a cure for meningitis.

Our boarding community raised money for Help for Heroes, Water Aid, ACE Africa, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, the Matt Hampson Trust and Greyhound Rescue.

Eco DayThe theme for our biennial Eco Day was water environments and water management. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a morning on the Mendips building dens and looking for bears before visiting the Bristol Festival of Nature on the Harbourside. Year 5 had a day in the sunshine with warden Roger Lucken at RSPB Greylake in the morning before enjoying some ecology fieldwork at Priddy Ponds. Year 7 had a marvellous time at WWT Slimbridge, feeding the swans and sketching in the shade of the trees. Children in the Pre-Prep, Year 6 and Year 8 rotated around a range of workshops in school including: wetland fieldwork, Water Aid UK, coastal ecology, freshwater pond dipping and identification, Go with the Flow river ecology session, collaborative river artwork and wildlife photography talks.

Parents’ and Friends’ Committee FundraisingIt was another busy year for the Parents’ and Friends’ Committee and their supporters, with the school and local charities benefiting greatly from their efforts. Autumn Term culminated in a glamorous Christmas Ball for parents and staff, raising funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. A coffee morning was held in aid of local residents affected by the severe winter flooding. The infamous Quiz Night took place and Mrs Shayler and her team of teachers regained their title. The summer term saw the return of the popular May Fair and we were blessed with beautifully sunny skies; a delightful event enjoyed by everyone. Our final event of the year was the Parent and Child Tennis Tournament. A lovely day was spent on the Millfield Senior School grass courts and it was eye opening to see the children frequently outclassing the grown-ups!
