The World in 2012A year in International Junior Branch

Welcome!

Each year many different and exciting projects, meetings, workshops, ideas (the list goes on) take place in International Junior Branch. Since 2009, the International Junior Representatives have tried to bring you the IJB highlights of the year just gone in this document.

2012 started with the second half of Mateo & James year together as IJRs, and when Mateo finished his term at CISV’s Annual International Meeting in France, we saw the lovely Cande elected to the role, taking over for the second half of the year. Therefore, this document is happily shared with you by your three IJRs for 2012.

Enjoy!

Each year in IJB we hold one international meeting where the JBers from around the globe come together as Junior Branch, as well as a meeting for each of our three regions. Each of these is a unique space in Junior Branch, where JBers can come together to share experiences, learn from each other, be creative and make decisions as Junior Branch.

International Junior Branch Conference (IJBC)Paris, France - 28 July - 1 August

IJB’s annual conference brought together 102 JBers. 10 IJB committee members planned and facilitated the conference, organised and supervised by IJRs Mateo and James. There were four main goals:

• Challenge and develop our organisation• Develop Individuals and leaders• Encourage education and action• Build and IJB structure and community

These addressed the core aspects of IJB, including educational content, analysing the fundamental principles of Junior Branch, and also engaging with the changes going on in CISV International.

Americas Regional Members’ Meeting (ARMM)Paris, France - 24-28 July

This meeting was facilitated by the ARM Team with the support of both IJRs. It was a very successful meeting and based on the willingness to feel more integrated with the other two regions of CISV. One major decision took place this year, where the JBs present voted in favour of changing the region’s name: ARM is now called Americas Junior Branches (AJB). Thanks to Pedro Murta and Saris Vélez for their contribution to the region, and welcome to Mariana and Jerry on the new AJB Team.

European Junior Branch Meeting (EJBM)Vervier, Belgium - 3-8 April

This meeting was facilitated by the EJB Team, with the support of senior IJR at the time, Mateo. European JBers got to meet not only as a region but also as neighbourhoods and got time to evaluate 2011 and planned for the rest of the year. We say thanks to Ale and Francisco for their dedication to EJB, and welcomed Kiki and Stefan. Unfortunately Stefan has since taken the decision to step down, so EJB are benefitting from Ryan as an EJB Team member.

Juniors of Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (JASPARC)Quezon City, Philippines - 30 March - 4 April

This meeting was facilitated by the APJB Team, supporting planners and with the support of junior IJR at the time, James. Sessions were planned around four focuses: Develop the region, Be part of a Global Movement, Working with CISV & Develop leadership. We thanked Taichi and Kate for their time on the team, and welcome Sam and Sofia on this exciting journey - see you in Lucknow!

Many of our training and development workshops are now maturing into their 3rd year or more. We are very excited to see the success of some neighbourhood workshops and partnerships, and pleased that more JBers around the world were able to access an exciting international JB experience.

The Americas saw the comeback of the CAM Workshop held in Guatemala, as well as Andinos was held successfully alongside the RTF in Quito, Ecuador. Unfortunately for JB South, it was time to pause and consider the purpose of the training for this neighbourhood.

Asia-Pacific saw the return of its three popular workshops, WHIP IT, TEA and ANZAC, with over 30 juniors at each workshop in Philippines, China and Australia.

In Europe, Benelux and Ibérico attracted over 100 JBers between them, the 3rd edition of the Wild West Weekend was held in Portugal, Go East repeated its success in Germany, and the Northern Hood Weekend happened for the first time in Latvia.

One major development in Junior Branch however was the creation of our Junior Branch Training Curriculum, thanks mainly to Anna Forrest, working in the Training group of the IJB Team. This curriculum was put into practice for the first time at an RTF training in Guatemala, as well as, to some extent, promotional training in Peru, Chile and Croatia. We are also happy to have completed our second Chapter Development Training at the Philippine RTF in partnership with the RDT committee, and we took the decision that future chapter development trainings at RTFs would be a always partnership between RDT and JB.

2012 in CISV was the year of sustainable development. Junior Branch worked with this by supporting CISV International’s commitment to Earth Hour - at APRW/JASPARC in the Philippines, Junior Branch led an activity to make a commitment to make a change contributing to environment. Earth Hour was also marked by Junior Branches around the world, turning lights off for an hour to raise awareness about sustainability.

Elsewhere in Junior Branch, an educational pack, ‘Stop Talking Start Walking’ was developed by a working group, containing ideas and activities based on CISV’s educational content area for the year, sustainable development.

Junior Branch was once again instrumental in helping CISV International support the organisation Peace One Day in marking the International Day of Peace on 21 September. Following the successes of ‘One Day One Goal’ in 2010 and ‘One Day One Dance’ in 2011, IJB focused on ‘One Day One Word’, where people used a word to either express what peace meant for them, or made a commitment to work towards a specific issue they identified in their life over the next year.

Following the re-structuring process that started in 2011, an evaluation taskforce was formed during 2012 by four IJB Team members, Candelaria Lucero Dente (ARG), Francisco Pavão (POR), Soliman El Ashkar (EGY) and Taichi Kimura (JPN) with the full support of IJRs Mateo and James.

Their objective was to put forward an in-depth evaluation to assess how the committee was working and detect flaws and improvements. The outcome of that evaluation was: • a report of all survey responses to understand the views and feelings of the respondents and

create the big picture on how International Junior Branch and the IJB Team were doing,• a proposal for possible new structures for the IJB Team.

During IJB Team Meeting (France, July 2012) the team at the time chose the new structure and consulted with participants of IJBC 2012, finalising the process and implementing the new structure. The IJB Team now consists of the IJB Committee (IJRs with between 7 and 9 members working on different areas, with a change of 1 or 2 members every year) and the three Regional Teams. It started working right after IJBC 2012 and, up to now, it has proven to be very efficient. You can find the evaluation summary and IJB Team proposal here on JB Library.

With the aim of analysing and improving the way CISV International works, at AIM 2010, CISV International approved an Organisational Review to be conducted by an external consultancy. During January 2012, the IJRs at the time were invited to the International Executive Committee’s Mid Way Meeting to discuss the impact that the recommendations from BlueSpark could have on Junior Branch. A summary of this topic can be found here.

During AIM 2012, the following decisions which impact Junior Branch were approved by the Board of Trustees (where each IJR votes):

• 1 member of the Governing Board will be elected by members of the Junior Branches but will have the same rights and responsibilities as any other Board Member.

• Junior Branch retains its ‘membership’ of CISV International, and still has two votes in matters where each member association (countries) must vote.

It was also agreed that:• IJBC would continue to be held annually, and alongside a governing board meeting and the

Advisory Conference in years where this is held. • Junior Branch would be included in the new committee structure, to integrate our work

more into that of CISV International.
