THEWINDTUNNEL JLD ESTABLISHING COLLECTION AT WRIGHT STATE ARCHIVES Want to see scrapbooks from the Junior League of Dayton’s first decade? Need a picture to post for #ThrowbackThursday on JLD’s Facebook page? Trying to settle a debate about who the Town Hall speakers were in 1978? The answers are in the JLD archives — and soon, members won’t have to rustle through dusty, bulky bins to find them. The JLD archives are set to be delivered to the Wright State Archives later this fall, establishing a permanent special collection there that will be accessible onsite and online to both members and the Dayton community. More than $3,000 has been raised from Sustaining members to help fund this project. “These gifts have not only helped expedite this pro- cess, but will allow for a dedicated graduate assis- tant to work specifically on the JLD collection,” said Joyce Young (S), who, along with Maribeth Graham (S), made up a special Archives Committee con- vened in the 2014-15 League year. A subcommittee of the JLD’s Communications Council, the Archives Committee was initially charged with organizing the JLD’s many historical materials. The group decided professional archiving services would make the best use of League re- sources while preserving our legacy for all to enjoy. Wright State will process, catalog and safely store our materials, freeing up valuable League office space and making historical searches — yes, even for those ’78 Town Hall keynotes — faster. “The committee would also like to thank Andrew and Ellie Gilmore (A) of BookFactory, who gener- ously provided office space to house our committee while we began the sorting and organizing pro- cess,” Young added. BookFactory has served as JLD’s printing sponsor since 2014. Stay tuned for further details as the collection is established, and learn more about the Wright State Archives at bit.ly/WSUarchives. In the spotlightThe series of Kids in the Kitchen public service an-nouncements produced in partnership with ThinkTV in 2014 continue their year-long run on Channel 16 through Oct. 31. In addition, ThinkTV has helped the PSA’s air in local elementary schools. View all of the spots at bit.ly/KITK-PSA14.

POWER-fulThank you to members who volunteered at summer POWER shifts! Kids In the Kitchen started off the year at the Boonshoft Free Museum Night July 21.

The JLD also had a great event at the Anthem Health & Fitness Carnival Aug. 16. Volunteers provided over 120 bike helmet fittings and ensured that many more Dayton area kids will be safely riding their big wheels, bikes or anything with wheels this year.

The Kids in the Kitchen booth was also busy! Kids were invited to “Taste the Rainbow” of flavors of five different kinds of fresh fruit smoothies – strawber-ry, mango, banana, pineapple and blueberry. They also received a KITK goody bag. 250 kids received a KITK active goody bag and we provided over 350 smoothie samples.

NEWS YOU CAN USEStrength in partnerships

The JLD was recently invited to participate in the Miami Valley Young Professionals Alliance, a new initiative of the United Way of Greater Dayton. The group aims to help area organizations network and collaborate to move the needle on key issues facing Montgomery County.

Tentative plans call for the group to meet quarterly, and more than 75 representatives of more than 50 local businesses, nonprofits and organizations (such as the JLD, Kettering Health Network, Wright State, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and more) attended the kickoff, held July 17 at Sinclair’s Ponitz Center.

Social butterflies

In addition to the JLD’s formal social media channels — which are open to the public for following and engaging — as of August 2015, the JLD has also started a secret Facebook group. Titled “JLD Leaguer List,” the group will serve as an online way for members to network, plan social gatherings and solicit recommendations for everything from painters to parks. Need an invite? Con-tact your council vice president for assistance, and if you notice fellow members who haven’t joined, encour-age them to do so.

Cooking up ideas

Need a back-to-school teacher gift or birthday present? The JLD recently participated in a cookbook swap with the Junior League of Tucson, Arizona, and now has 18 copies of their Purple Sage and Other Pleasures cook-book available for purchase. Contact the JLD office at 937-222-5541 or [email protected] to order, and ask about past swaps for even more variety.

On the move

The Strategic Planning Team continues the search for new office space for JLD. The team met in May to discuss members’ responses to the spring survey and identify our needs, with several office showings in a va-riety of locations happening in August and September. Stay tuned for the group’s final recommendation (and info on how you can help with the relocation). Ques-tions? Contact Audrey Starr, SPT chair.

96 YEARS OF SMILESNew Members to the Junior League of Dayton in its early years — like in 1928, above — were referred to as Provisionals.

While the group’s name and onboarding proce-dures (like sponsors, a one-week intensive train-ing course and detailed test) have evolved over the years, the sentiment hasn’t.

We’re excited to welcome another fantastic New Member class for 2015-16 and look forward to getting to know them all better. We’re glad to have you!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

(L to R) Ellis Shulman, Mary Hossier & Chris Saunders

Three honored with annual membership awards

The Junior League of Dayton honored three of its members during its Annual Dinner meeting May 12, 2015, at Moraine Country Club. The awards, given annually, recognize outstanding community service and leadership efforts.

The 2015 Sally Riffle Award for Innovative Leadership was presented to Active Member Mary Hossier and Sustaining Member Ellie Shulman. This award is given to an Active or Sustaining member who demonstrates innovation and enthusiasm in furthering the mission of the JLD.

Hossier is dedicated to the mission of the Junior League of Dayton through her commitment to develop-ing the potential of women and improving our com-munity. She has committed herself to the JLD through her service on Financial Development Council and the Ohio State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC).

Passionate about serving others and the Dayton re-gion, Hossier is a member of the U.S. Air Force, where she served on a team that developed the high-visibility Airman Blue Line Program, which provides support for Air Force members deployed in a joint environ-ment with an emphasis on sexual assault, ensuring that airmen are consistent-ly supported regardless of location or unit. In addi-tion, she helped found the Women’s History Month committee at Wright-Pat-terson Air Force Base and has been awarded the Wilma Vaught Visionary Lead-

ership Award for AFMC.

Sustaining Member Marty Ebeling, who nominated Shulman for the award, wrote, “Ellie is the perfect role model for one woman’s ability to improve the greater Dayton community through innovative leadership skills combined with quiet persistence and manner.”

Shulman helped establish the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Dayton after recognizing the need for educational learning programs aimed at older citizens. She served as JLD president in 1977-78 and has served as a docent and trustee of the Dayton Art Institute. Shulman has also worked with the Living Arts Center, ThinkTV, Cox Arboretum and Temple Israel Sisterhood.

The 2015 Katharine Kennedy Brown Community Leadership Award was presented to Sustaining Mem-ber Eleanor “Chris” Saunders. Named in honor of the JLD’s founding president, the award is to given to a Sustainer in recognition of her demonstrated dedi-cation and commitment to voluntarism, the JLD mission and vision, and service to the greater Day-ton community.

Saunders was nominated by Sustaining Member Joey Thiele, who wrote, “Chris embodies what it means to build a better community through her extensive service to the Dayton region.” Deeply concerned about peace, Saunders lead or participated in 10 citizen diplomacy trips to the Soviet Union during the Cold War, bringing Americans and Russians together, an experience that inspired her to form the Miami Valley Episcopal Russian Network, where she planned and led both adult and youth mis-sion trips to a village near St. Petersburg.

Currently, Saunders is involved with the Dayton Inter-national Peace Museum as coordinator of exhibitions. In addition, she has long volunteered with orchestras and art museums in Columbus, Ohio, Toledo, Ohio, and Dayton, and served as volunteer Art Trek coordi-nator for the Dayton Art Institute for 16 years. A Dayton Daily News “Ten Top Women” honoree, Saunders has served on the DAI Associate Board and as president of the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association.

Congratulations again to these members! Thank you for all you do to make our community and our League better. See more annual dinner photos at bit.ly/AD_15.

“The JLD cookbooks were one of the first things I bought after moving to Dayton in 2012. They haven’t disappointed — I’ve made some great meals and learned a lot about the community while doing it.” —Audrey Starr (A)

Pecan Torte4 eggs, separated

2 c. granulated sugar, divided

1 c. Ritz cracker crumbs

1 c. chopped pecans

1 tsp. vanilla

2 c. heavy cream

1/4 c. powdered sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

*This torte needs to be refrigerated 6-8 hours prior to serving.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Beat egg whites in medium bowl until stiff. Grad-ually add 1 c. granulated sugar.

In a separate bowl, beat yolks. Gradually beat in remaining 1 c. granulated sugar. Fold egg white mixture into yolk mixture. Add crumbs, pecans and 1 tsp. vanilla. Carefully stir until well blend-ed. Spoon into 2 greased and paper-lined 8- or 9-inch cake pans.

Bake 35 minutes. Cool and turn out of pans, removing paper.

To make icing, whip cream until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla. Whip to stiff peaks.

To assemble, place 1 torte layer on a serving plate. Cover this with half of icing and place second layer on top. Cover cake with remaining icing. Refrigerate 6-8 hours to absorb cream. Don’t worry if the torte crumbles; the icing will “glue” it all together.

ACTIVE PROFILEAnne Mariscalco

JLD member since: September 2013

Current JLD placement: Communica-tions Council VP-elect

Goal for the 2015-16 year in this placement: To increase overall inter-nal league communication by helping launch an online membership commu-

nity. The online membership community will be available to all members including new, active and sustainers and will serve as a hub for all league information.

Favorite JLD memory: My favorite memory took place during a volunteer shift this past spring at a fellow mem-ber’s home. During this shift our project was to store and catalog donated books for the New Member Book Project. An hour into the shift her neighborhood lost power during a thunderstorm. Despite the lack of power we used flashlights, candles, and continued to work. It showed how determined we were to reach our book drive goal!

Describe your perfect Saturday: My perfect Saturday would include attending a spinning class at Cycle-Logix with a friend. Then going to a delicious brunch at either Olive Urban Dive or The Winds Café followed by an afternoon of shopping – love a good meal and deal!

Three things you can’t live without: Sound machine (for sleeping), coffee and my Google calendar!

Best restaurant in Dayton and why: Rue Dumaine. Their menu and unique dining experience never dis-appoints. I personally recommend getting a side of the pommes frites w/ aioli…amazing!!!

Favorite Graeter’s Ice Cream Treat: Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip

Best pizza in Dayton: Wheat Penny Oven & Bar

SUSTAINER PROFILEEllie Shulman Ellie Shulman brings to life the Latin phrase “Carpe diem,” or “Seize the day!” She has energetically seized every opportunity to learn and teach, enjoy life and create a better life, and make the most of every minute.

Ellie grew up near St. Louis, then attended Smith, where she majored in art history. After marrying Tom, she moved to Dayton where she became one of the first volunteer docents at the Dayton Art Institute. She joined the League because she was very impressed with how much it was doing for the community.

She found the Provisional course exceptional. The League also sent her to an AJLI Young Leaders Confer-ence which was, she says,”a wonderful experience, the ultimate realization of why I joined.” She served on many League committees, became Community Vice-Presi-dent, and then served as the first one-year term Presi-dent-elect and President.

Ellie says the Junior League training made her feel qualified to go out into the community on her own. She continued to volunteer at DAI as a member of the Asso-ciate Board, co-chaired its Oktoberfest, and then served on the Board of Trustees.

Ellie also played a formative role in a Dayton Schools landmark project, the Living Arts Center, which brought students from all area schools to learn and practice the visual and performing arts. She chaired the League project in the Living Arts Center, the art gallery, and later became Chair of the Living Arts Center Board.

Ellie’s interests and accomplishments are many and diverse. Ellie volunteered as a literacy tutor with the Dayton Literacy Project and is an active supporter of Reach Out and Read. She is a Certified Yoga Instructor. She has researched Chinese cuisine, and has taught Chinese cooking classes. She loves gardening, and her garden is documented in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens. (Look online under Eleanore Shul-man Garden.)

Ellie also has contributed to the success of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Dayton as a 20-year participant and past president of the Board of Trustees. Her current commitment arises from her belief that the standard American diet and lifestyle are destructive forces in our health. With characteristic enthusiasm, she has researched how she can best bring understanding of these factors to the world. As a result, she is studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified Health Coach in the areas of nutrition and lifestyle factors that cause optimal health.

Ellie and Tom have two daughters and three grandchil-dren. She loves to read and travel and visit art muse-ums. Her next trip will probably be to South Africa and Botswana with her grandchildren where she will learn and enjoy and make the most of every minute.
