WELCOME MATWelcome to the 2014-15 League year!

A new League year begins a new chapter in the JLD journey. Each year brings unique challenges and opportu-nities, and this year will be no excep-tion. We will meet these challenges by understanding how our League’s past,

present and future all fit together.

We are honoring the past. This League year marks 95 years of service to the Dayton community. We’ll be formally announcing our 95th anniversary later this fall as we recognize the date of our first-ever meeting, held Oct. 31, 1919, and a spring anniversary event is in the planning stages (see Page 7).

We are focusing on the present. During the summer, your executive board has been working to plan events that are meaningful, impactful and aligned with our mission. Thanks to the generous support of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the League will continue reaching out in the community with our signature POWER (Program of Wellness Education and Resources) program (see Page 5). Plans are underway for our annual fundraisers: Vintage in the Valley, a community rummage sale, in the fall, and Run for the Health of It, a 5/10K walk, run and family event in the spring (see Page 3).

We are planning for the future. At the April GMM, the membership voted to approve literacy as JLD’s next focus area. Our Strategic Planning Team will continue to focus on the AJLI-sanctioned Issue-Based Community Impact model, and we have joined other Leagues in par-ticipating in AJLI’s Community Impact Model Transforma-tion process, which will give us the resources needed to continue developing a new program (see Page 6).

This isn’t a solitary journey -- all of us can be on board. Come along for the ride; you won’t want to miss it!

COMMUNITY

Meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., Panera Bread, 1203 Brown St. Contact [email protected].

Wishes grantedWe again are the recipients of a $35,000 grant from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. The funds will go toward supporting our POWER programming, which continues during the 2014-15 League year.

Lights, camera, actionAfter months of planning and coordinating, camer-as started rolling June 17 on our new Kids in the Kitchen public service announcement commercial series, set to air later this fall on ThinkTV Channel 16, an affiliate of Public Service Broadcasting (PBS). The segments are aimed at children with themes that also appeal to parents, encouraging healthy choices such as choosing nutritional snacks and exercising regularly.

Sign of the timesIf you thought you saw the JLD logo on Interstate 75 this summer, you weren’t mistaken. The winner of our 2014 helmet safety photo contest, Brackston, got to see his name in lights June 6-8 on a KeyAds billboard just south of the Moraine exit. The same billboard will again air in August, reminding kids to play it safe and always wear a helmet.

We’ve got the powerWith the League year ready to roll, Community Council has several POWER and Kids in the Kitchen volunteer shifts already lined up, from the Anthem Health Fair in August to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery’s annual Free Museum Night in Novem-ber. See Page 5 for full details and directions on how to sign up online.

COMMUNICATIONSMeets monthly on the third Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. Loca-tions vary. Contact [email protected].

Social butterfliesIf you’re not already following the League on social me-dia, what are you waiting for? Not only will you get the latest JLD news, photos, videos and behind-the-scenes info, but you can join the conversation and share our story with your family and friends. See the back cover of this issue for a listing of all JLD social platform accounts.

News you will useWe’re changing how the JLD communicates, both internally and externally, to better meet members’ needs and increase our exposure in the Dayton region. The Windtunnel has had a complete redesign, with an emphasis both on appearance but also content that is timely, engaging and useful. It will now also be uploaded online at Issuu.com, where you can search through past editions and easily share issues or articles with others. Also new this year: a brand-new monthly e-newsletter, Flight Plan, that replaces the previous weekly email up-dates. The idea is the same -- to keep members updated and provide the latest breaking League news -- but you’ll find the delivery more streamlined and consistent, offer-ing a mobile-friendly design and integration with calen-dars and social media. Any member can submit news or updates to [email protected] (along with questions or comments). Also, per the recommendation of our 2013-14 Handbook Ad Hoc committee, the Handbook will be printed and distributed in advance of the annual dinner in May.

Read all about itThe JLD (and its members) are everywhere these days. Ads appeared in the summer and fall issues of FOCUS magazine, the publication of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, for our recruitment events and 95th anniver-sary year. View it online at http://bit.ly/jldfocusmag.

AJLI TRANSFORMATION ROLLOUT: ISSUE-BASED COMMUNITY IMPACTFor the past several years, AJLI has been engaged in a collaborative and strategic organizational trans-formation process designed to ensure the long-term health, vitality and viability of the Junior League, plotting a deliberate course toward relevance and meaning in the 21st century.

The world has changed and we need to change with it. We need to be more nimble, more flexible, more efficient and more effective. We need to give members more of what they want, including tangible community impact and the experience of belonging to a well–run League.

So far, several Leagues — including ours — have helped through action learning teams. Now, AJLI is ready to rollout tried and true models to transform Leagues from the ground up, and the JLD is on board as a participating League with the issue-based community impact model.

The goal of the new Junior League Community Impact Model is to enable Leagues to have deeper community impact and greater membership satisfac-tion by focusing on issues rather than on individual projects. This new form of community impact will do three things: resonate with members and their passions; listen to the community and respond to its needs; and make real change.

An issue focus, as opposed to a project focus, lets Leagues broaden the choices available to the mem-ber beyond the tradition of direct service. The model equips Leagues to expand their strategies to include advocacy, public education/awareness, strategic grant making and capacity building (e.g., helping community partners strengthen their operations in planning, board development and volunteer man-agement) in addition to their direct service/hands on volunteer efforts.

This year’s Strategic Planning Team will be working closely with AJLI on implementation as we move to-ward our new focus area of literacy (see President’s Message, Page 2). Questions? Email [email protected].

THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!The Junior League of Dayton is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that relies on the generosity of members and supporters to continue its work of training women volunteers and impacting the lives of residents in the Miami Valley.

Podio Communications Council secured a sponsorship from Podio, an online project management tool with a full mobile app suite, in June 2014. Podio, part of Citrix Systems, allows users to create workspaces to collaborate with specific groups of people, use an Employee Network for company-wide communication across departments and locations, and get their work done using Podio Apps. Anyone can build their

own Podio Apps without any technical skills, and can choose from hundreds of readily available, free apps in Podio’s App Market. These apps add structure to any business process or project and are connected to social, collaborative activity streams used for commenting and discussion. Communications Council will be using this tool to manage our publications schedules, press release and media advisory pitches, advertising and promotional opportunities, and social media posts. Longterm, we envision the entire League being able to benefit from our Podio account. Questions? Contact [email protected].

Vertical Response Also in June 2014, Communications Council received a free nonprofit plan with Vertical Response, an online marketing tool that will be used for sending all League emails, including the monthly e-newsletter mentioned on Page 4. Vertical Response, a subsidiary of Deluxe Corporation, offers a full suite of online tools – email, social media, mobile and more – all from one account, and provides analytics so we can track the success of our messages and follow up with readers who aren’t getting (or opening) them.

95 YEARS OF SMILESWe aren’t sure who is in this picture -- or what year it’s from -- but we do know that Junior League of Dayton ladies love a good party, and this must have been one for the record books.

According to A History of the Junior League of Dayton, written by Sustainer Milly Hubler, there were two suc-cessful Follies shows: The Follies of 1946 featured 25 scenes, a cast of 85, and a men’s ballet. (More men than women applied for roles!) The Follies of 1948 featured a lively casting party as well as delightful cabaret dance after the show.

JLD COMMUNITY IMPACT: 1920-1940The Junior League of Day-ton initiated several com-munity projects in its early years. The Gauze Stretch-ing Committee stretched more than half the gauze needed at Miami Valley Hospital, while the ladies

of the Sewing Circle Committee sewed more than 1,000 garments, primarily layettes and hospital gowns.

In 1927, the JLD began a children’s theatre program that continued until 1970, performing many well-known titles such as Cinderella, The Secret Garden, The Prince and the Pauper and Hansel and Gretel. In 1929, the League assisted in opening the Dayton Art Institute, adding a Teacher’s Art Library in 1937.

In 1932, the Puppet Committee was formed. This com-mittee provided entertainment free of charge to under-privileged children in schools, institutions and hospitals. Over 130 performances were given to 18,000 children. The Christmas puppet show, “The Homesick Toys,” was highly acclaimed. Dayton was the host city for the first puppet conference in 1938.

In 1934, the League began a radio committee that broadcasted over station WSMK on Thursday evenings with children’s radio play. Soon, the committee became part of the local school curriculum, broadcasting and reaching students. Thirteen Dayton schools tuned in to our dramatizations of “A Tale of Two Cities,” and we were invited to join the national “School of the Air.”

During the Great Depres-sion, the JLD turned all fundraising profits over to an emergency food and fuel relief fund. In total, $5,000 was donated. Next, the League took on occu-pational therapy as their signature project, helping establish the OT Department at Miami Valley Hospital. Their equipment donation was the League’s largest com-munity contribution of the 1930s.

Watch for more JLD history in future issues as we cele-brate 95 years of service in the Miami Valley.

TRAINING TIPS

Rich resourcesPhase I of the AJLI Resource Library, a multi-phase initiative and key component of our transformation efforts (see more, Page 6), is now live.

Everything AJLI produces — training materials, opinion pieces, webinars, conference videos, logos, governance documents, guides, sample documents, reports, etc. — is collected and made accessible to you in their new Resource Library. Additionally, the Resource Library contains external resources including the work of major research, practitioner and policy organizations in all areas of Junior League operations and community pro-gram work.

We encourage you to visit the Resource Library often as resources will be updated and functionality will be enhanced on a regular basis. And please remember to share, rate and comment on resources you find useful — and those you don’t — so others can benefit from your feedback and AJLI can begin to create collections of resources such as “most popular” and “most useful” based on your ratings.

Later phases include advanced search capabilities and a widget installed on a League’s member website that will display resources from the Resource Library to an individual member based on information from her profile, such as placements, skills and interests. That means the most relevant resources, and those of most interest to the member, will be pushed automatically to that mem-ber, without the need for her to search the Resource Library.

Webinar WednesdaysAJLI’s Webinar series, Webinar Wednesdays, is one of many methods to help Junior League women develop as community and civic leaders. These sessions, typically one-hour in duration, are designed to appeal to every Junior League member, regardless of age or current en-gagement in her community, as an easy way to increase her knowledge of and interest in community and civic leadership. They run from September to June, typically on the second and fourth Wednesday of the Month at 1 p.m. (EST). OUT & ABOUTEven during the summer hiatus, Junior League of Dayton members are as active and busy as ever. Here’s a peek at what you may have missed since June.

(Clockwise from top) Executive board members -- and Flyer alumnae -- Ciara Parks, Kelly Geers and Emily Bowman make a pit stop on the University of Dayton campus after a recent exec board meeting. • Community Council completed an update of the JLD Deli at Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, adding new signage with My Plate guidelines and replacing junk food items with healthier options. • New member recruitment events at Flyboy’s Deli and Figlio were a time for mingling, learning (and laughing). • Filming took place June 17-18 on a series of JLD Kids in the Kitchen public service announcement commercials, airing later this fall on ThinkTV. There were plenty of active members (and their children) on hand, ready for their closeups. • Brackston won this year’s JLD Helmet Safety Photo Contest, and got to see his name in lights along Insterstate 75 the weekend of June 6. Watch for a repeat showing of the billboard sometime in August.

ACTIVE PROFILEShannon Shelton Miller

If you want to make weekend plans with Shannon Shelton Miller this fall, be fore-warned -- you might get preempted by flying pigskin.

This self-proclaimed college sports fanatic and former sports reporter for the Orlando Sentinel and her hometown newspaper, the Detroit Free Press, has

been known to schedule activites -- including her wedding -- around college football games.

“I even go by Shannon Shelton Miller just to avoid being confused with the Olympic gymnast from the mid-1990s.”

Shannon is in her fourth year as a JLD member, having spent the last three years as a financial development and then community council member. This year, you’ll find her lending her professional expertise to communications council as marketing and public relations coordinator for fundraising.

She cites infant-toddler safety chair as her favorite place-ment so far: “It made me appreciate the work we were doing to help teen mothers at a very vulnerable time in their lives.”

During the day, you’ll find her at the University of Dayton, where she serves as assistant director of communications. Outside the office, she’s active in the Greater Dayton Asso-ciation of Black Journalists, the Sister Circle at UD and La Leche League.

While making a trip to Italy is still on her bucket list, she has interviewed more famous athletes than the rest of us could probably list. Shannon brings that same adventurous spirit to the League.

“Get involved in as much as you can in League activities and opportunities. It might seem overwhelming at first to understand the placement structure and to meet other members, but POWER shifts and other activities provide a great opportunity to get to know other members better while you’re working to support a great cause.”

Shannon’s Dayton roots are firmly planted, but fresh. “This city has so much history. Who knew that so much greatness came from right (or should I say Wright?) here?”

If there’s a brief lull in college sports action, Shannon turns to anything 1980s or 1990s: “Michael Jackson, Dirty Dancing, 1984 (well, not written in the ‘80s, but you get the idea).”

Shannon and her husband, Corey -- a Wright State Uni-versity psychology professor -- are the proud parents of 23-month-old Blake.

SUSTAINER PROFILEKaren Dempsey Volke

Karen Dempsey Volke’s voice came across the phone in calm, modulated tones. “I couldn’t get back to you earlier. Here at the Ronald McDonald House, our computers have been down all day, and just now the fire alarm went off, so I had to meet with the fire department. It’s been a crazy day.”

Karen’s ability to handle “crazy” days like this is one rea-son she was voted Outstanding Fund Raising Executive in 2009. As a Certified Fund Raising Executive, she has managed fundraising for Kettering Medical Center Founda-tion, the Dayton YWCA and Dayton Children’s Hospital. Her friendly face is a familiar sight at many Miami Valley events benefitting women and children’s issues.

Karen’s hours outside her duties as chief development officer at Ronald McDonald House are displayed on Face-book, where pictures brim over with her husband, Edward, and their dog, travels and friends. Her current community activities include service on the alumni board of trustees of Bowling Green State University and the board of governors of Leadership Dayton.

Karen grew up in Dayton and graduated from Archbishop Alter High School. Her professional career spans retail management, marketing, advertising, community relations, media and public relations, and development. After she became a JLD member in 1983, she used her profession-al skills in her first volunteer placement as editor of The Windtunnel.

Her favorite League placement was representing the JLD on the steering committee of the Women’s Coalition of Day-ton, which resulted in “friendships that continue to enrich my life.”

Karen speaks highly of her Junior League training: “The training is the best I have ever experienced. I have met new acquaintances and knew immediately by their focus and organizational skills that they were League-trained.”

She also has a firm belief in the power of volunteers. “The League can assure a vibrant future by continuing to provide stellar volunteer training to women and to offer opportuni-ties to use those skills to help address challenges faced by our community and to create out-of-the-box solutions to those issues.”

Karen fits in her favorite sport, bicycling, when she can, and you may spot her wearing her latest impulse buy, hot pink and lime green Sketcher’s. She has decided to reread the classics, currently enjoying Little Women.

Just the kind of calm activity to combat the crazy.
