S h a l o m and blessings! I am writing t h i s s h o r t column during my final weeks of sabbatical, w h i c h h a s b e e n t r u l y amazing.

My main message here is one of gratitude, deep and sincere gratitude from my whole family for the opportunity we had to experience the world, traveling through parts of Europe and New York, and living in Jerusalem. Thank you to the entire staff and lay leadership for your support and backing. Thank you to Rabbi Kollin for stepping back in

and being a loving, dedicated and incredible rabbi emeritus, and more: a mensch and amazing member of our community. And of course, thank you to my clergy partner, Cantor Ruth, for giving 120% to our community and providing support, grounding and leadership during my time away. I know that I missed some wonderful community moments, and some tragically painful moments, and I am beyond grateful to know that everyone was cared for, supported and comforted in my absence. I look forward to sharing many of our experiences during the “welcome back” Shabbatot in August, over the High Holy Days, and throughout the year. Israel is a remarkable place and we had a deep and transformative

As we enter the month of Elul and approach the High Holy Days, it is a time for personal reflection and prayer. For our synagogue and PJTC community, it is an appropriate time to focus on goals and plans for the coming new year, including some significant transitions.

We are blessed to have PJTC as our center for Jewish spiritual and cultural life in the West San Gabriel Valley. Our wonderful clergy, religious school, adult education programs and social organizations provide a flourishing and inspirational environment for our temple families

and members. We are fortunate to have these g r e a t s e r v i c e s a n d opportunities. However, it is essential that the congregation understand that the activit ies we cherish necessitate our strong and persistent support. The Board of Directors has approved the budget for this fiscal year,

and we will not be raising membership dues. As a result, the dues we pay will actually cover only 40% of the total revenues required for the year. Also, the Religious School tuition for families only offsets about 46% of the budgeted school expenses.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are almost here, and this year I am asking you to sing with us and participate in all the prayers that we lead during the High Holy Day services. Based on my personal experience, t’filah is possible only in partnership with others. I understand that some of the prayers are intentionally designed to be lead by a sheliach tzibur (emissary of the congregation); but, for the most part, the level of togetherness and elevated spirituality that we need to really feel fulfilled and have a sense of spiritual peace is definitely something that I do not want to do alone.

As part of this sincere and committed desire, you will receive an email during the month of August, which will include melodies and prayers that will be used

during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. I hope you will appreciate the time and effort that has been put into making these recordings. Please spend some time listening to the songs and prayers with your entire family. I believe that familiarizing yourselves with the melodies will enhance your connection with the services during

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The texts of these prayers will be

included in the email. If you have any questions or need help, please do not hesitate to call me. I will meet everyone who wants to practice together anytime!

I am not sure how many more of these columns I will be writing, but as of this date I am now serving as your interim E d u c a t i o n Director until a new person has been hired to sit at this desk. So I have the

privilege of once again telling you about the wonderful program we have in store for you and your children this coming September at Louis B. Silver Religious School.

Classes begin on Sunday, September 8. Preparations are now underway for the exciting year to come, which will include plenty of opportunities for parents to learn with their children. We will be welcoming new staff members to our already stellar faculty and I will tell you more about them in the next edition of the FLAME. Those returning include:

Gal Kessler-Rohs, who will be teaching the K’tantanim Class, Tami Cutler in Kindergarten, Kaileh Pistol in Gesher, Jenny Owen in Mechinah, Jen Leonard in Aleph, Wendy Bat-Sarah in Gimel, Anat Bar-Chaim in Dalet, Sondra Dreshner in Hei, Malina Mindell in 8th Grade and Stephanie Ivler in 9th and 10th. Cecilia and Rick will also be returning to teach Israeli Dance and Music. Melissa Bergman will continue working with our b’nai mitzvah students, helping them to prepare their Torah portions and Haftarot. Both Cecilia and Melissa will become newlyweds this summer and we wish them and their lucky husbands, many happy years of married life!

We are looking forward to another year of celebrating and learning together in our synagogue school home and we look forward to welcoming back all of our families, new and returning, on September 8. In the meantime, make every summer minute count and enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Everyone had a fine time at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga with a great view behind home plate for the professional baseball game between the Cucamonga Quakes (Dodger Farm Team) and the Lancaster JetHawks (Houston Farm Team) followed by a great fireworks display. It was lots of fun for everyone.

July Yad Presentations to PJTC B'nai Mitzvah Men's Club continues to provide a gift of a yad to all bar

and bat mitzvahs on the Friday night of their event, making it easier for them to read from the Torah on Saturday morning. On July 5, Eric Schlecht presented a yad to Rachel Spaizman, and Bob Levinson presented one to Ben Shilling on July 12.

We will be using a professional publishing company that specializes in cookbook fundraisers,

and who provides many resources to facilitate the process. If you have had experience in working on the earlier editions, or perhaps worked on your high school yearbook or college poetry newsletters, we can use your help. If you have no experience, we can always use a discerning eye, and innovative suggestions. You will be able to choose to do a few discrete tasks, or take on a larger challenge if that is your desire.

are thinking about the High Holy Days already. Sisterhood is involved in so many ways, ordering Bimah flowers, selling delicious challah to save you a trip into Fairfax and providing the Break-the-Fast after Yom Kippur services. The High Holy Days are a time for us to be together as a community, with friends and family. Scott and I love living in Altadena, but not having grown up here, we are so lucky

to have been “adopted” by PJTC families for holiday meals and celebration and are always glad to return the favor.

This time of year is very special, a time to reflect on the year past as well as look forward to the year to come. Last year, at Yom Kippur services, our now 26-year-old son commented on how for the first time he really connected to the deeper meaning in the prayers and the sermon. I felt so happy about that. At home and at PJTC he received a great Jewish education that will benefit him for his lifetime. Sisterhood believes and invests in Jewish education on all levels because this is the future for our community.

I hope to see you soon and when I do, please come say “hello,” and give me a hug. One of the things I love best about Sisterhood is the

warm hugs and kisses I get, not just at our Board meetings, but whenever we greet each other. It feels so wonderful to be part of that circle. We had over 30 members at my first “official” board meeting as Sisterhood President, and no shortage of willing volunteers. It is gratifying to lead this great group of women. So it got me thinking: what do other Sisterhood members love best about being a part of our organization? See below for two of their answers. I’m hoping that this motivates you to join Sisterhood or if you already joined to deepen your involvement. As Stacy Ober says in this year’s membership letter, “Your membership is essential, a lasting friendship the goal.” L’Shanah Tova.

Women’s Book Club by Connie Taus, Book Club Chair

The book for Thursday, August 15 (a one-time change to the third Thursday), is a novel, Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe (1958). This is a story of the traditions, suffering, and brutality of tribal life in a village in Nigeria, told by someone who is one of them.

My Visit to Krakowby Michael Several

This is the third of four parts about my trip to Germany and Poland

In April, I went to Krakow and Auschwitz, in addition to Germany, as part of my exploration of the historic Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe. I brought to Poland the belief that during the German occupation, the Poles were Hitler’s enthusiastic

collaborators, the extermination camps were established in Poland rather than Germany because of the Poles’ deep anti-Semitism, and the Poles not only didn’t help the Jews during the German occupation, but assisted the Germans in rounding them up for extermination. However, this wall of belief and prejudice had fractured by the time I left Poland.

In Krakow, I went to the Kazimierz, the Jewish community’s historic neighborhood, and the area south of Kazimierz, across the Wisla River, where the Krakow ghetto was located. In the Kazimierz, I saw all seven synagogues, entered the five I could, and walked through the area’s two cemeteries. The High Synagogue has a photo exhibit of the building’s history and the Jewish community in Krakow. The Remu Synagogue is the most austere one I visited, but it was the only one I saw being used, with several Orthodox men davening. In contrast, the Progressive Synagogue, which has the richest and most visually appealing interior of the synagogues I saw, was animated only by tourists like me.

The ghetto area has two state-supported sites of remembrance. One is the “Pharmacy Under the Eagle," which is a small museum in the building where the only non-Jewish Pole the Germans allowed to operate in the ghetto, Tadeusz Pankiewicz, had his pharmacy. The second is the site of the metal and porcelain factory that Oskar Schindler managed, employing Jews from the adjacent concentration camp as slave labor. The factory is gone, but the site has a building with a reconstruction of Schindler’s office, information about Schindler, his life, and the story of his protection of approximately 1,000 Jews. The building also has a permanent exhibition about Krakow under German occupation, which is both informative and theatrical. As an example of its theatricality, the space where the exhibit recalls the ghetto’s history becomes increasingly narrower and tighter as the viewer moves through it, creating a growing sense of enclosure and evoking a feeling of claustrophobia.

The story I got from the numerous places I visited and the large amount of material I read during my one day in Krakow is as follows: the relations between Jews and non-Jews in Krakow before the German occupation were good, exemplified by a Jewish member of the City Council; during the occupation; it was extremely dangerous for Poles to help Jews, as Poland was the only occupied territory in which it was a capital offense to protect Jews, yet Poles did what they could, which is evidenced by the fact that about 65% of the Righteous Gentiles are Poles; and the Poles opposed the Germans, mounting a strong partisan resistance to the occupation. This compelling story challenged my previous beliefs, yet I felt something crucial was missing. It wasn’t until I went to Auschwitz-Birkenau the following day that I realized what it was.

An Update from Your Jewish Federationby Jason Moss, Jewish Federation’s Executive Director

The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys has been hard at work serving as the Jewish voice for our community, and providing programs and services that meet the needs of our local Jewish community. One of the many goals the Jewish Federation is to create multiple entry points for community members to find their way into the Jewish community and to provide opportunities that are more relevant in the lives of our community members.

One of the ways we felt we can do this better was to establish new organizational committees. The purpose for the committees was to get more community feedback on the direction the organization is going and to ensure that the money raised each year is being used in the most effective ways possible.

Long Range Strategic Planning: The committee will plan a cohesive and uniting statement about the Jewish Federation’s vision, values, mission, goals, structure, and strengths and weaknesses of the Federation. Committee Members: John Carlton (PJTC), Janet Kadin (PJTC), Cathy Krasner (PJTC), Marc Lavender (Temple Sinai), Bob Levinson (PJTC), David Levy (Temple Sinai), Julie Miller (Temple Beth David), Stu Miller (PJTC), Oran Reznik (TBI of Pomona), and Steve Sopkin (TBI of Pomona).

Program Oversight: The committee will look at all aspects of the Jewish Federation’s programs/services. In addition, each program/service will be evaluated in a similar manner to ensure that all of the Jewish Federation’s programs/services are successful. Committee Members: Marcia Alper (PJTC), Brenda Rosenfeld (TBI of Pomona), and Diane Schuster (TBI of Pomona).

Marketing/Communications: The committee oversees all aspects of the Jewish Federation’s communications, including marketing and public relations. The committee will: 1). review the newspaper, website, other social media, and marketing strategies for alignment with Federation’s stated goals and mission; 2). develop a clear process for timely communications; and 3). propose strategies for improving the organization’s marketing and communications. Committee Members: Arlene Bailey (Temple Beth David), Karen Brown (PJTC), Bill Burnett (TBI of Highland Park and Eagle Rock), Nancy Carlton (PJTC), Gretchen Edwalds-Gilbert (TBI of Pomona), Carol Lavender (Temple Sinai), Debrah Lemettre (TBI of Highland Park and Eagle Rock), Aty Rotter (PJTC), and Joanne Tolkoff (TBI of Highland Park and Eagle Rock).

Fundraisng/Development: The committee shall oversee all of the organization’s fundraising/development efforts with a goal of increasing the overall annual fundraising to $1 million a year. Committee Members: Marcia Alper (PJTC), Ricky Calvin (PJTC), and Josh Pais (PJTC).

From the Eugene and Marilyn Fingerhut Memorial History Project

This is the third of a five-part series on Frank Ackerman. The first two parts appeared in the April and May issues of 2012.

In 1964, after only 17 years in existence, B’nai Israel Temple Center of El Monte ceased to exist when it merged with the Foothill Temple Center in Sierra Madre. This merger was largely orchestrated by Frank Ackerman, who had joined the Sierra Madre congregation in 1962 after leaving PJTC in a heated dispute over Rabbi Galpert’s contract renewal. Shortly after joining the Foothill Jewish Community Center, Ackerman was elected president of the congregation. As president, he played a key role in acquiring the land on Second Avenue in Arcadia for a new synagogue, which involved swapping land at Foothill and Second that Max Knell had acquired for the congregation in 1958. According to Susie Kustner, the “City of Arcadia was not thrilled about a synagogue going in the land Knell acquired because it wanted the site commercially developed. The city helped the congregation trade it for the property on Second, and Ackerman was in all of this negotiating and put it together.”

Ackerman played an influential role in the design of the new synagogue. According to Kustner, Ackerman made the decision to have the sanctuary face west. “Frank very much wanted the synagogue to belong in the community so he thought that if the sanctuary didn’t face east and did not look too Jewish, community meetings could be held there.” Some of the congregation’s members, however, wanted it to face east toward Jerusalem as it traditionally does. However, they “learned to live with it,” Kustner recalled because it would have been costly to reorient it. A traditional facing side chapel was constructed as part of the new facility. According to Linda Rourman, Ackerman was responsible for having a pool constructed. Though the Arcadia congregation was like PJTC–a “shul with a pool"–the Arcadia pool was neither used as much nor had the social prominence that the PJTC pool had. In the early 1980s, the Arcadia pool was removed as a safety precaution when the B’nai Simcha pre-school opened on the site.

In orchestrating the merger of the Foothill Jewish Community with the B’nai Israel Temple Center of El Monte in 1964, Ackerman forced Sierra Madre’s long–serving rabbi, Dr. Charles Steckle, to retire early. According to Susie Kustner, “it was Ackerman’s encouragement that we needed to have a new rabbi for the new synagogue. Rabbi Steckle was an older man and not a particularly dynamic speaker. I think that Mr. Ackerman and other people felt he would not be a draw. But it was a hard thing and he was sort of ready for retirement.” Barry Kustner recalls he “had a heavy accent but was a wonderful person.”

Susie Kustner remembers Frank Ackerman and his wife, Nina, as “being very bright and knowledgeable. They had all kinds of wonderful ideas. They had workshops and study groups and were willing to give up lot to fit in with the community. They both were leaders who did a lot of wonderful things. But also they did some not so wonderful things.”

The Adult Education Committee is sponsoring a docent-guided tour of “Jews in the Los Angeles Mosaic,” the exhibit at the Autry National Center in Griffith Park, Los Angeles that everyone is talking about. The tour will be on Sunday, August 4, at 11:00 AM . There is a $8 per adult group (10 or more) ticket charge for admission to the museum and all exhibits & films that day. Seniors are $5. Please reserve October 3, Thursday night at 7:30 for a special Rosh Chodesh program at PJTC. Adult Education and Sisterhood will jointly sponsor a program featuring Franci Levine Grater. Franci will discuss her family’s six-month sabbatical, particularly their activities in Israel.

Also in October, Rabbi Joshua Garroway, Ph.D., who was so warmly received when he taught a short class in the Shavuot program last May, will offer a fabulous learning opportunity. He will teach a three-session Tuesday night class on October 8, 15 and 22, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. His subject is “The Fuzzy Boundaries of Jewishness: Ancient and Modern.” Determining who is a Jew in antiquity was no less challenging and controversial than it is now. These classes will explore ancient debates regarding the boundaries of Jewish identity as a lens for considering similar concerns facing Jewish communities today. Rabbi Garroway, PJTC member, is assistant professor of Early Christianity and Second Commonwealth at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He is the author of the recently published book, Paul’s Gentile-Jews Neither Jew not Gentile, but Both. Pre-registration is encouraged. Please contact the PJTC office.

And beginning in October, "Documentary Discussions": A Jewish doctor abandons his career to spend his life surfing, housing his wife and many children in a small camper as they travel from one surfing beach to another and spend all day, every day, surfing. His children reminisce about the good, the bad, and the ugly of their childhood and adolescence. This is a summary of just one of several documentaries about Jews and Judaism which will be featured in “Documentary Discussions,” a new program at PJTC. After each screening, the documentary’s story and the issues it has brought up will be discussed while sharing a nosh. Join in the first Documentary Discussion on Thursday evening, October 24, at 7:30 PM, featuring the film, “Surfwise” brought to you by the Adult Education Committee. Do you remember the Pointer Sisters? They were a singing group, popular a few centuries ago. OK. Only kidding. Not a few centuries ago, although it may feel like that. They were best known for a song called “I’m So Excited.”

All that to say that I’m So Excited…about the great thinking your Membership Committee has been doing and the wonderful programs we’ve put together.

Specifically, we’ve created a Mentorship Program. Starting next month, all our new members will be paired up with a PJTC Mentor. About once a month, the mentors will check in with the mentees, make sure that they are integrating well into our community and answering any questions. There will be encouragement to get involved, by volunteering to work on a committee or donating resources, etc. We are developing some guidelines for mentors; always a work in progress, subject to changes to reflect how effective the program is.

Can we count on you to raise your hand and volunteer to be a mentor? It’s not a huge task. It won’t necessitate any financial donation….just your time and your wonderfully positive spirit about PJTC.

Third Visit to PJTC from the Israeli ScoutsThis was the third year that

the Israeli Scouts came to PJTC to entertain and teach us about Israel.

We had a wonderful crowd who enjoyed the singing and dancing of the enthusiastic teenagers.

We are grateful to our host families, who took the Scouts into their homes overnight: Stacy and Stu Miller, Shelly Friedenthal from Temple Sinai in Glendale, Evelyn and Ernie Robinson, Nurith and Peter Brier, Penina and James Segall-Gutierrez, and Anita and Jeff Landau. The hosts varied from one with a young child; one with college-aged children at home who had a great time playing basketball with a Tzofim who was an Israeli teen basketball champion; to grandparents. They all enjoyed the experience.

Thanks to Judy Callahan, who provided dinner for the Scouts prior to their performance; Laurence Harris, who helped with the barbeque at the Landaus; Andy Schwarz, who provided the ice cream; and the Men’s Club,) who set up and served the ice cream sundaes.

This was a wonderful joint effort to bring Israeli Scouts to the children and adults of PJTC and a few visitors from neighboring temples.

USY United Synagogue Youthby Zac Madick

First and foremost I hope everyone is having an amazing summer. The Board and I are hard at work putting together a wonderful year for Pasadena Kadima/USY. In fact, this year Pasadena will be hosting the opening event for USY. Teenagers from all over Southern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico will be coming here for our

“Casino Night,” where the kids will get to be like the adults. They will “gamble” on behalf of their chapter’s tikkun olam fund and drink beer, root beer that is. The event will be on September 21.

But before we hit the fall, let’s talk about summer! One of the best parts of the summer is hanging out by the pool, and in August PJTC-USY (aka The Rocketeers) will be going to Raging Waters.

In September, we will be starting our monthly Tuesday Movie Night, and first up on the list is Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs! And “if you can read this, you don’t need glasses.” Tuesday Movie Nights will generally be held on the first or second Tuesday of the month in the Youth Lounge. We will also be having a second Lounge Night towards the end of the month, when one of our terrific USYers will put on his/her own program, to teach and learn with their peers. The dates for September’s Lounge Nights will be September 3 and 17.

Following that will be our first Potluck Shabbat Dinner. Every month one of our USYers and family will host a Potluck Shabbat dinner. The USYers bring an item for dinner (pareve of course), and they bring in Shabbat with prayer, eating and singing. The September Potluck will be hosted by the Weisz family on September 20.

And that brings us back full circle to September 21 with our Casino Night. So get ready and mark your calendars, because PJTC-USY is about to blast off!

June 3. At a reception I met Mr. Pepo Levi, the Vice President of the Jewish Community of Macedonia. As some of you may recall, we were informed some years back by Rabbi Haim Asa of Fullerton that the Jewish community in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, was opening the first synagogue in the city since World War II. We donated a Torah to them, which Rabbi Asa delivered.

Mr. Levi led us outside, where the delegation from Skopje to the AJC Forum was grabbing a smoke.

When I was introduced, one of them, Rahamim Mizrahi, rushed over and gave me a hug. His father Viktor had been community president when the Torah was presented. He told me that PJTC’s name is next to the entrance of the synagogue and our recognition and gift are still appreciated.

A l s o p r e s e n t w a s G o r a n Sadikariyo, CEO of the Macedonian Holocaust Fund, which administers funds obtained from donations and from reimbursements for properties seized during the war. I also met Metodiya Koloski, who resides in Washington and is president of United Macedonian Diaspora, which reaches out to Macedonian ex-pats (Jews and non-Jews) around the world.

It’s nice to know that we helped a re-born Jewish community come into their own with a gift–literally–of Torah.

We will be gathering sch'ach (palm fronds), location will be announced later, Friday, September 13 at 9:00 AM. It is always a fun outing to do some "hands on" Judaism. High Holy Day Ushers Needed The High Holy Days are just around the corner,

and we are once again recruiting ushers. Our ushers’ main job is to make congregants feel welcome and secure and to help them have a good experience at PJTC. Ushers will be deployed somewhat differently this year in order to better greet people and improve

the environment in the sanctuary. There will again be two shifts for evening services and three during the day. Your help in filling the nearly one hundred slots throughout the holidays would be much appreciated.

Interfaith Study Groupby Cecilia Fox, PJTC’s ISG representative

The Interfaith Study Group consists of members of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, All Saints Episcopal Church of Pasadena, and the Islamic Center of Southern California. A congenial group, we usually meet on the second Sunday of each month, rotating locations among these institutions. Our purpose is to grow in understanding, to be respectful, and to be interested in learning from each other. All are welcome! Please bring an item for our potluck, which follows the program.

ISG meets next on Sunday, September 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Islamic Center of So. California, 434 So. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, with a speaker on Zoroastrianism, followed by our usual vegetarian potluck meal and discussion. We’ll have a carpool leaving the north parking lot at All Saints departing at 4:15 for the Islamic Center.

Tikkun Olam Committeeby Yudie Fishman

The PJTC Tikkun Olam Committee invites you to get involved in one of these opportunities to volunteer locally and make a difference as a member of the Jewish Community:

Tutoring Young Children in Reading – Join with other Temple members and volunteer with Reading Partners. You will work one-on-one with a Pasadena primary grade student and help him/her catch-up to grade level in reading. Volunteers are provided with guidance, structure and materials. This is a very satisfying experience – you will see results! If you are interested, contact Jane Fishman: [email protected].

Greater Pasadena Area Affordable Housing Group – Join with other groups from the local community such as All Saints Church, League of Women Voters and others to advocate for affordable housing. Contact Yudie Fishman: [email protected].

Friends in Deed Bad Weather Shelter – During the winter we help operate a “weather activated” shelter that provides a hot meal and a safe place to sleep for homeless people when the weather gets cold or there is rain. PJTC will be on call for several nights during the winter. A group of approximately 15 Temple volunteers sets up cots, prepares and serves dinner and – we all have a really good time! Union Station – Join with other Temple members who prepare and serve a meal to clients of Union Station, the pioneering and award-winning organization that works to end the cycle of homelessness in our local community. Contact Andy Schwarz: [email protected]

Foothill Unity Center – This is wonderful organization that works with homeless and very-low income families to make sure they have enough to eat and that their children have school supplies. PJTC has been involved with collecting food at High Holy Days for Foothill Unity and also collects school supplies. Contact Felicity Swerdlow: [email protected]

Green Committee – Join with others working to make the Temple more energy efficient and “Green.” Projects include waste reduction and reducing energy usage. Contact Maya Golden-Krasner: [email protected]

Weizmann News: PJTC Sisterhood Kindergarten Visitby Lisa Feldman, MA Ed. Head of School, Weizmann Day School

As we adjust to the relative quiet of summer and busily plan for the school year ahead, I find myself reflecting on memorable moments of the year gone by. One of those highlights was the visit by the PJTC Sisterhood to our Kindergarten classroom.

Sisterhood has always generously supported our school, including funding our iPad program. We thought that the perfect thank you would be to invite these wonderful women to come into the classroom for a nosh and to see for themselves how the iPads they donated enrich our classroom learning.

No Weizmann visit would be complete without a little performance – and this was a particularly appreciative audience!

Then the students broke up into small groups, wowing our Sisterhood friends as they demonstrated math

and language arts skills and some fancy navigation through interactive educational programs.

It was a joyous get together and one I will remember for a long time. I am always happy to have opportunities to kvell about our students. And it feels extra good when we can express our gratitude to the wonderful friends who share my passion for Jewish education and continuity.

A big todah rabah and thank you to our lovely PJTC Sisterhood friends for visiting our Kindergarten and supporting us in every way!

With the Yamim Noraim (High Holy Days) just around the corner, we are preparing a rich and meaningful prayer experience, combining the traditional liturgy and music with new and innovative liturgy and music, including some of the latest synagogue music from progressive communities in Israel. I recently was reminded of how Rabbi Alan Lew z’l, described the High Holy Days as a journey, with many stops along the way. He taught that starting with Tisha B’Av, our lowest and darkest time in the calendar, which we observed a few weeks ago, through Simchat Torah, the joyous culmination, we are called, as individuals and as a people, to journey together in starting the new year. We are called to deep, personal introspection, looking at our lives, our souls, our relationships, through the lens of teshuva, the Divine gift we are given to renew and restart our lives along the way. And we are called to communal connections, building trust with one another as we create a safe space together for prayer and reflection. We need one another to show up and be present! Come to pray, come to look inward, come early and stay late. The HHDs can’t be rushed, which is why the journey, according to Rabbi Lew’s teaching, is actually 60 days. My daily Elul meditations will be starting soon, Cantor Ruth is preparing music to send out, we have a special program planned, and then it will be Rosh Hashanah. Our hope is that there will be moments for everyone to plug in and find meaning. This requires teamwork between us, the clergy, and you, the congregation. We look forward to being together!

I can’t wait to greet you personally on my first Shabbat back and throughout the holy days. Franci, Noah, Ella and I wish you and your family a great end of summer and a Shana Tovah, a sweet, happy and healthy New Year. We are grateful to be back in our community to start 5774.

Our temple’s general fund must make up these shortfalls. The traditional Yom Kippur Appeal is especially vital in providing the funds needed to bridge such budget gaps. A strong Appeal is paramount for PJTC to achieve its financial goals. Please join with me in contributing generously to this year’s Appeal, and increase your gift if you are able. A Guardian contribution signifies a profound honorary level of giving at PJTC. Please contact the temple office for further information about our Guardians.

The funds received from the Shaarei Torah campus sale will primarily provide financial stability and sustainability for PJTC and our community. The funds will give us some secure investment income to augment our revenue, and it is hoped that a portion of the funds will allow for improvements and upgrades to our PJTC facilities. It is imperative that the Shaarei Torah funds themselves never be used directly for the daily operations of the Temple.

Our PJTC Planning Committee has thus far provided mainly financial guidance with a variety of long-term budget projections based on revenue and expense scenarios. These projections are a constant reminder of the importance of continued strong membership contributions and tight budget controls. The Planning Committee will also be providing guidance regarding any upcoming facilities projects. We are currently remodeling the bathrooms near Knell Chapel and reroofing our main building. The only other plan in progress is a comprehensive evaluation and possible significant expansion of our temple security. The safety of our school children, staff, and congregants is imperative, making this a particularly high priority item. We have now received a security analysis from a highly respected security provider. The evaluation will be thoroughly reviewed by a special committee and our Board of Directors. Ultimately, the congregation will be advised of any Board recommendations prior to implementation, so stay tuned.

Two other high profile projects for the new year are the search for a new education director, and the Board review of the PJTC Constitution revisions suggested by our Constitution Committee. The Board is scheduled to address the proposed updates to the Constitution in August in a process that could easily take several months. The Education Director Search Committee is hard at work formulating a job description in preparation for interviews this fall, after the holidays. The security upgrade, education director search, and the Constitution revisions will all have a tremendous impact on our synagogue now and into the foreseeable future.

This year we will also introduce a new musical format for our High Holy Days. We look forward to the new format enhancing the prayers and the spirituality of the services. Cantor Ruth will soon be sending the congregation a letter describing the new musical ideas and vision of tefilah, and will include recordings of several melodies and prayers being planned. Rest assured, many of our favorite melodies will retain their prominent roles. We are excited and ready to be inspired by the new musical ideas. While this new format does not include our traditional High Holy Day Choir, we acknowledge and appreciate the tradition our choir brought to the services for so many years. We are trying something new, so come prepared with an open mind and open heart to experience the High Holy Days a little differently.... together.

Weisz on the marriage of their daughter Aaren to Clay Heller on August 4 in Laguna Beach. Aaren is a third-generation PJTC member, and served as our Youth Director last year. We wish them all the very best as their family grows.

Congratulations to our newer members Melissa Bergman and Jacob Levy, who will marry on August 18 at the Esperanza Mansion in Keuka Park, NY, near Melissa’s hometown of Ithaca. An aufruf in their honor will be held at PJTC on August10, hosted by Cantor Ruth and Laurence Harris.

August 18 is doubly special. That is also when Natalia Skolnik, daughter of Bonnie and Jeff, will marry Seth Ament in Seattle. We send our best wishes to them all.

Rumors of Neil Simon Spreading in Arcadia! Neil Simon’s Rumors will be the fall

production of the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys’ Cultural Arts Program.

Neil Simon (Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Odd Couple) buckles the audience up for a bumpy night in his delightfully jocular 1988 Tony Award winning play, Rumors. The play contains mistaken identity, poor judgment and a temporary case of hearing loss that keeps the house in stiches and begging for more.

Rumors will be performed at the Jewish Federation in Arcadia on: Saturday evenings, October 12 and 19 at 8:00 PM, and Sunday afternoons, October 6, 13, and 20 at 2:00 PM.
