About DementiaDementia is not a single disease; it’s an
overall term — like heart disease — that covers a wide range of specific medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. Disorders grouped under the general term “dementia” are caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings and relationships.
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs because of microscopic bleeding and blood vessel blockage in the brain, is the second most common cause of dementia. But there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies.
If you have questions about symptoms or treatment, see Stacey Handsaker, RN, Memory Care Director

Close up with our Executive Director
I will never stop believing that everything happens for a reason.
Athough I know that my education has been a huge part of my career, real success is much more than school work, degrees and letters behind a name.
In my case I was lucky to have been blessed with the biggest of hearts. This quality has finally led me to where I belong.
I am honored to now be the leader of The Willows of Marshalltown Assisted Living and Memory Care Community. I am honored to serve you, our residents. And I serve you because I love you.
So as you see me scurrying around know that you are in my heart and you are the very person that brings me life.
Meet our new Memory Care Director
Hi, my name is Stacey Handsaker and I am very happy to be at The Willows. You will always find my door open for staff, residents and family. Stop by anytime to say hello. Together, we can help make The Willows the ideal memory care facility in the area.
I am a Registered Nurse, wife, Mom of two and have been in the health care industry over 10 years, previously serving in Memory Care and Assisted Living. I started out in laundry and house keeping and studied to become a licensed Registered Nurse. I am also an active volunteer EMT for the State Center Fire and EMS Department.
I grew up in Marshalltown, on a small acreage. Currently, my husband, John, and I work the family farm. Our two children, Colton and Taylor, attend West Marshall High School. Colton, 18, is a senior and is active in FFA, trap shooting, and football. Taylor, 16, is a junior and is active in FFA, soccer, and cheerleading. Stacey Handsaker

A valuable step toward handling the challenges of a loved one’s dementia
is connecting with others in similar situations. Our support group gives you
the opportunity to learn from family members who may be in your shoes.
In addition to receiving encouragement and hearing personal experiences,
you can also learn what to expect and how to best plan for your loved
one. A support group can reduce stress and feelings of uncertainty–
helping you to keep calm and carry on.
