Watches and Jewelry repaired. ju9tf The Anti-Cooli- e Asociation of "San Francisco has recently made a re-po-rt to the Board of Health, of that city, on the condition of the Chinese quarters. It is stated that from 200 to 300 Chinese lodsre at night in one house, that pome houses have 500 and others 1,000 lodgers. A three story Imilding on a lot fifty feet square, callel the "Globe Hotel," has 5,500 inmates. 1 he ground is also scooped out m- - to subterranean apartment where A. gambling goes on dav and night, and Avhere other worse crimes are committed. It is also alleged that in these underground recesses, sub- - G teriancan Courts, with judges and executioners, arc held, and that the penalty of death is inflicted upon such Chinese as reveal the secrets of the organization. This may be considedred as rather doubtful. The offensive odor arising from dhese crowded, filthy abominable quarters is described as sickening in the extreme, and the Board of Health is requested to examine in- to and purge the dwellings of the Chinese, so as to prevent the oc currence of Asiatic plagues which American physicians cannot con- trol. A Disin i"K TA-N- The tlisin-fectin- g power of water has been receiving considerable attention of late. With the exception of char- coal, it is said that no other sub- stance is so perfect an absorbent of odor. It absorbs its own volume tif some gases, and more than six hundred times its volume of oth- er;. For instance, of amonia gas "which is one of the largest pro- ducts of decomposition, six hun- dred and seventy cubic feet is ab- sorbed bv one of water. Another offensive odor, ahvas present where akimal matter is oeeavmg, arises ram suipmir 01 nvuroLjen. till I absorbs two aw a half times its ' own volume of this. These facts are "worthy of remembrance and practical attention. A. quantity of water placed in an open vessel in a sick-roo- and changed often, makes an excellent disinfectant. &-- O- 4 A Clerk who was discharged from the British Admiralty, "for misconduct, in lS01,and of course without a pension, lately wrote to the Department, as if still iu office, oilenne; to aceer a commutation of pension. apparently no iixpii-b- v ry was made the oilicials to whom the application was address- ed. They seem to have assumed implicity that the pension was due, and to have proceeded in the ordi- nary course with the calculation for com muiin it. The result was that on the T4t!i of June, 1870, the clerk received 2,000 from the Admiralty for consenting to retire a service from which lie had been dismissed in di.-ra- ce nine years before, and to accept a commuta- tion of a pens.'um to which he had no title v, .1 at ever. lie clerk at once started 011 a visit to th Uuit- - ed States. The Anti-Cooli- e Asociation of"San Francisco has recently made a

re-po-rt to the Board of Health, ofthat city, on the condition of theChinese quarters. It is stated thatfrom 200 to 300 Chinese lodsre atnight in one house, that pomehouses have 500 and others 1,000lodgers. A three story Imildingon a lot fifty feet square, callel the"Globe Hotel," has 5,500 inmates.1 he ground is also scooped out m- -

to subterranean apartment whereA.

gambling goes on dav and night, and Avhere other worse crimes arecommitted. It is also alleged thatin these underground recesses, sub- -

G teriancan Courts, with judges andexecutioners, arc held, and that thepenalty of death is inflicted uponsuch Chinese as reveal the secretsof the organization. This may beconsidedred as rather doubtful. The offensive odor arising from

dhese crowded, filthy abominablequarters is described as sickeningin the extreme, and the Board ofHealth is requested to examine in-

to and purge the dwellings of theChinese, so as to prevent the occurrence of Asiatic plagues whichAmerican physicians cannot con-

trol.

A Disin i"K TA-N- The tlisin-fectin- g

power of water has beenreceiving considerable attention oflate. With the exception of char-coal, it is said that no other sub-

stance is so perfect an absorbent ofodor. It absorbs its own volumetif some gases, and more than sixhundred times its volume of oth-er;. For instance, of amonia gas"which is one of the largest pro-ducts of decomposition, six hun-dred and seventy cubic feet is ab-

sorbed bv one of water. Anotheroffensive odor, ahvas present whereakimal matter is oeeavmg, arisesram suipmir 01 nvuroLjen. till I

absorbs two aw a half times its '

own volume of this. These factsare "worthy of remembrance andpractical attention. A. quantity ofwater placed in an open vessel ina sick-roo- and changed often, makes an excellent disinfectant.

I have tried Dr. J. W. Murray'sLung and Liver Balsam. I used it in mr family with the best of success. I was sick forsome months and used every remedy. Icalled several phvsicians, but thev did me nogood. I exhausted every remedy known fothe medical profession, and received no benefit, llns ijiiug and Liver Balsam cured me,and I do not hesitate to recommend it to thepublic and my friends, as a good and saferem dy. 1 hose who know me, as many doin this Stat;, know that I would not recom-mend them to use a thing that hsis no merit, because I am opposed to quack remedies.
