We call them mysteries. Not mysteries in the “whodunnit” vein, but in the sense of the original word that means things that cannot be known. The class is intended for anyone needing a refresher on the Episcopal Church and is particularly for those desiring to be confirmed or received when the bishop makes his visit in November. We will talk about Church history, doctrines and dogmas, calendars and procedures, how we do things and why we do them. In school, students often ask questions in order to get their teacher off topic. That can’t happen here because the questions are the topic. While I will have things prepared, I am perfectly willing to let the conversation go where it needs to go. There are no silly questions. So bring your questions and join us in what should be a very good time. Classes will run from September 14 until October 26. Peace, Fr. Brandt+

Why Do We Do That? Why do we use incense? What’s the deal with the candles? Why do we

have a lectionary? Or a Book of Common Prayer for that matter? What is an

Anglican? How are they different? How are they the same? How does

Christianity fit in with other religions?

Being an Episcopalian is not always easy. Not least of all because we don’t

intend for it to be easy. There are no easy answers to difficult questions. What

really happens during the Holy Eucharist so that Christ is really present? Is the

priesthood ontological or teleological in nature? How can God be three Persons but

only one God? How can Jesus be both fully God and fully human? What is the

existential nature of the Church?

These and other questions have occupied the greatest minds in human

history for centuries. We are not going to answer them in an inquirer's class.

Sorry. But we will talk about these things and many more besides. At its heart,

Anglicanism in general, and the Episcopal Church in particular, consists of

impossible to answer questions. We call them mysteries. Not mysteries in the

“whodunnit” vein, but in the sense of the original word that means things that

cannot be known. We can’t always nail down the right answer, but we can see

some wrong ones and talk about where they fall short. We can describe the right

answers sometimes but not always be able to articulate them.

Fortunately, there are questions we can answer, and we will endeavor to do

so with our inquirer’s class starting September 14. Much as we have done during

Lent, we will gather at 5:30 in the chapel for a brief Eucharistic service then move

to the parish hall for a light supper and the class. The class is intended for anyone

needing a refresher on the Episcopal Church and is particularly for those desiring to

be confirmed or received when the bishop makes his visit in November.

We will talk about Church history, doctrines and dogmas, calendars and

procedures, how we do things and why we do them. In school, students often ask

questions in order to get their teacher off topic. That can’t happen here because the

questions are the topic. While I will have things prepared, I am perfectly willing to

let the conversation go where it needs to go. There are no silly questions. So bring

your questions and join us in what should be a very good time. Classes will run

from September 14 until October 26.

Fr. Brandt+

Four more stained glass windows have been adopted! Thanks to the generosity of Jill and Russell Flowers the next four windows in need of restoration will be done this year. Pearl River Glass will be here on Sept. 6 to remove the windows and take them

back to their studios for major restoration. They will assess the situation when they get them on site, but right now they believe they will be back in time for Christmas.

If you would like to adopt a window, e-mail Betsy at [email protected] and she can send you an illustrated list of the windows which need adopting and the costs associated with each. You are also welcome to come by the office and look at the list.

HOW ABOUT A RECIPE?

Taylor Cottingham made this cake for the St. James’ Feast Day potluck. Everyone enjoyed it so she wanted to pass the recipe along. If you have a recipe you would like to share, e-mail it to [email protected] and we will include it in the newsletter as space allows.

Save the Date Our Annual Harvest Bazaar will be Nov. 17. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and this year the bazaar will be dedicated to the memory of Saundra Lane who was on the steering committee for many years.

The Steering Committee for this year is: Ginny Cochran, Marsha Baird, Debi Hendrix, Mickie Sandidge and Bee Stewart.

Look for more details of the bazaar in the October Wayfarer.

Puppets find a Great New Home

in Columbus, MS. Denise found 10 new puppets under the tables at the

Rummage Sale. She didn’t know who donated them,

but knew they should stay together so she took them to

her office and looked them all up online. These

puppets still had the tags on them and came from the

company “Silly Puppets” of New York. The names for

the puppets: Jose, Jasmine, Kenny, Amy, & Cindy

(children), Pops Grandpa, Granny, Carlos, the store

owner, & wife, Maria. They are all together living in

Columbus and here is the update:

Lisa Lacy’s sister, Courtney Stanback, is a Spanish

instructor and ESL (English as a Second Language)

teacher in the Columbus Public School System. Each

day she works with students, helping them to learn not

only our language, but skills to assimilate into our

American culture. She is very grateful for the

“incredible gift” of these puppets, which are helping to

put a smile on the faces of these students, who often

feel so lonely and overwhelmed. “Because English

speaking can be so daunting and even sometimes a

little embarrassing for children from other countries,

puppets are an incredible help! The puppet is the one

“speaking,” and injecting some humor makes everyone

feel more at ease.” Thank you so much, St. James!

Cursillo is a worldwide movement of the Christian

Church which strives to penetrate and Christianize

environments through Christian communities in action.

It begins with a three-day Cursillo weekend that

provides a living experience - meeting Christ, meeting

fellow Christians and experiencing how they live.

The Cursillo method described during the weekend

provides a means to continue the Christian growth

after the weekend. The resulting Christian community

is a group of men and women who live the Christian

life, linked together in Christ, and are supported in

their environment.

Snippets from the Past Betsy has been scanning old documents St. James is

required to archive to the cloud. Lately she has been

working on old vestry minutes and has found some

interesting tidbits of information. For instance, it was

April 1955 that the Vestry voted to organize a Day

School which would begin the following September

with 30 students paying $10.00/mo. tuition. They set a

one year trial to see if it seemed like a viable thing.
