Trees and CrossesBY MAY DROST

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it stillmake a sound? Rabbi Lawrence Kushner tells a story about the parting of the RedSea: Two Israelites, Reuven and Shimon, were among those makingthe crossing as God held back the water. The whole way across, theywere looking at their feet and complaining about themud on their sandals. When they got to the other side, they had noidea what all the praise and singing was about. And because they hadbeen looking down and complaining the whole time, they hadcompletely missed the greatest miracle their people had everexperienced. For them, it never happened (Eyes Remade for Wonder,11). There is a wonderful painting by Peter Breughel called TheProcession to Calvary. A group of people is enthusiastically makingits way to Golgotha hill. Jesus is not readily visible until your eyessee the cross under which he has fallen. He seems a minor part ofthe procession. And truly, this pivotal event in human history wouldhardly have made the daily newspapers, had there been any at thetime. It was just business as usual, especially for the Romans. Even if nobody understood, or even took notice of the death andresurrection of Jesus, did it happen? Was it crucial for the wellbeingof the world? As surely as a tree falling in the forest makes a sound.And just because we cannot know God's purposes in the way hechooses to uphold the universe, does that mean there isno such thing as a loving Creator? The good thing is that the welfare of the world does not depend onhuman understanding. Only those who have "eyes remade forwonder" have some inkling of what'sgoing on.
