CHRIST CHURCH WESTSHORE Pentecost 21 3

Blessed be God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 ESV

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray.

Set us free, loving Father, from the bondage of our sins, and in your goodness and mercy give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Children’s Blessing & Prayer

The people sit. The New Testament Lesson 1 Peter 1:13 – 21

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 15 (Please pray responsively by half verse)

1. Lord, who shall dwell in your tabernacle?* Or who shall rest upon your holy hill?

2. Whoever leads an uncorrupt life,* and does that which is right and speaks the truth from his heart.

3. He has not spoken deceitfully with his tongue,* nor done evil to his neighbor and has not slandered his neighbor.

4. In his own eyes the wicked is rejected,* and he makes much of those who fear the Lord.

5. He swears to his neighbor and disappoints him not,* though it were to his own hindrance.

6. He has not given his money for usury,* nor taken a bribe against the innocent.

7. Whoever does these things* shall never be overthrown.

Sequence Hymn Speak O Lord, v. 3 Getty & Townend

Verse 3 Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; help us grasp the heights of your plans for us. Truths unchanged from the dawn of time, that will echo through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on your promises; and by faith we’ll walk as you walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till your church is built and the earth is filled with your glory.

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Gospel John 12:44 – 50

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon Rev. Gene Sherman “Living in a Strange Land: A Solid Hope!”

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, “hear our prayer.”

For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God.

Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

For Foley, our Archbishop, and Mark, our Bishop, and for all the clergy and people of our Diocese and Congregation.

Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad; and for all who teach and disciple others.

Page 6: Hymn in Procession

Lord, in your mercy:

Hear our prayer.

For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith.

Lord, in your mercy:

Hear our prayer.

For our nation, for those in authority, and for all in public service especially Joe, our president, Mike, our governor, and all the lawmakers in our nation.

Lord, in your mercy:

Hear our prayer.

For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

Lord, in your mercy:

Hear our prayer.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life. The people may add their own thanksgivings at this time.

Lord, in your mercy:

Hear our prayer.

We remember those who have died in Christ.

Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for

ever.  Amen.

The Confession and Absolution We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear the word of God to all who truly turn to him:

If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:1-2 ESV

Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Question for Week 43 The New City Catechism

What are the sacraments or ordinances?

The sacraments or ordinances given by God and instituted by Christ, namely baptism and the Lord’s Supper, are visible signs and seals that we are bound together as a community of faith by his death and resurrection. By our use of them the Holy Spirit more fully declares and seals the promises of the gospel to us.

(Romans 6:4) We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Offertory

Please stand. Doxology Hymn 380, v. 3

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

Page 8: Hymn in Procession

Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation.

By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore, let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed once for all upon the cross. Therefore, let us keep the feast! Alleluia!

Page 9: Hymn in Procession

CHRIST CHURCH WESTSHORE Pentecost 21 9

We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table; but you are the same Lord whose character is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The Power of the Cross Getty & Townend

Oh, to see the dawn of the darkest day, Christ on the road to Calvary. Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten then, nailed to a cross of wood.

Chorus This, the pow'r of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, bore the wrath. We stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain written on your face, Bearing the awesome weight of sin. Ev'ry bitter thought, ev'ry evil deed, Crowning your bloodstained brow. Chorus

Page 12: Hymn in Procession

12 www.ChristChurchWestshore.com

Now the daylight flees, now the ground beneath Quakes as its maker bows His head. Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life, “Finished!” the vict'ry cry. Chorus

Oh, to see my name written in the wounds, For through Your suff'ring I am free. Death is crushed to death, life is mine to live, Won through Your selfless love.

This, the pow'r of the cross: Son of God slain for us. What a love, what a cost. We stand forgiven at the cross.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

The Blessing The people respond: Amen.

CHRIST CHURCH WESTSHORE Pentecost 21 15

Sermon Text: 1 Peter 1:13 – 21

13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
