With an abundance of music events, learning seminars, festivals and an array of shows, the county has a lot more than expected to offer to keep you and your family occupied throughout the season. First stop: Bemus Point. Fix your musical fancy on one of the multiple tribute bands that are performing here. Next stop: The Chautauqua Institution. The season kicks off on June 26 with a performance from the original Broadway cast of The Jersey Boys in Concert. Third stop: The Chautauqua County Visitor’s Bureau. Rather than focusing on one area, the Chautauqua County Visitor’s Bureau, whose new motto is The World’s Learning Center, publicizes events for the entirety of Chautauqua County. Saturday performing on the stage will be Underground Stampede from 12 to 3pm, Black Widow from 3pm to 6pm, and the headliner for the weekend; Sean Patrick McGraw (above) performing from 6pm to 10pm. Classic cars, sports stars, music, art, crafts, and food will all be coming together for the 30th annual Strawberry Festival. The popular annual Merritt Winery event this year will be raising money for Ali’s Rally. In talking about the festival Jason Merritt assures, “they’ll be lots of interactive activities, and lots of fun things for the family to do.” The event will run June 12th and 13th at the Merritt Estate Winery in Forestville. Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Archie Reed will be on hand to sign autographs Saturday and Sunday. Sports memorabilia collectors will enjoy the many sports items to be available at the silent, and Chinese auctions. “We’ll have some nice stuff. My friends have donated some items and I’ve donated stuff

from my personal collection,” Jason tells me. Among the items will be: autographed pictures, the Buffalo Bills Jim Kelly autographed footballs, and other jerseys. Ryan Miller from the Olympic hockey team has donated a piece of Olympic logo head gear, and the Sabers have donated an autographed hockey stick. Other auctions will include non-sports items such as gift certificates, and gift baskets. “A lot of businesses have shown support, Tops Stores is donating a couple of big gift baskets with non-perishable food items.” Lovers of classic cars will find lots to ogle; they are expecting over 150 classic cars (weather permitting). The cars will be available for close inspection on both days. Also the fire department will have fire trucks and demos at the festival. Hollywood replica cars, featuring the General Lee (the Dukes of Hazard car) and the car from Starsky & Hutch will be on display. There will be lots of entertainment both days. 6pm to 10pm. Sunday will feature the band Heard of Buffalo from 12 to 3pm, and Side Effect from 3pm to 6pm. Also, between musical acts the Kicking Rhythm Kloggers will be entertaining. But let’s not forget the strawberries. “If the berries are ready, we’ll have local strawberries by the quart.”

There will be strawberry themed deserts and Merritts ever popular Sangria Wine Slush. Bud light will be available and food will feature the usual picnic fair: hot dogs, hamburgers, and snacks for the kids.

Preparing your schedule for the summer season in this corner of New York Sate can be a daunting task. Lakes, grapes, wineries, picturesque tours, cultural events and unparalleled culinary experiences are just a few of

Tops would have to be the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, where you can view world-class nature exhibits, wildlife art, and photography exhibitions. With summertime coming around, many college students are scrambling to find that perfect job that will be monetarily rewarding as well as personally gratifying. 4 years ago upon college graduation, Ohio-based Michael Murray, developed a program that gives college students the opportunity to run their own business during their summer vacation. “I ran my own painting business while I was in college at Miami University in Ohio,” states Murray, “and I realized what a great opportunity it was to work with customers. I decided to create an internship where I would provide the payroll and training support, and offer the students a chance to see what it is like to run their own company. “ Through the Student Development Company LLC, individuals learn to start and run a painting business. They hire and manage employees, market and sell their services to customers, and manage the financial aspects of their business. Students get several advantages working for SDC. The Company provides all

accounting work, training, and marketing materials for their business as well carries necessary insurances. To date, Murray has 75 participants in his program recruited from a variety of cities including Pittsburgh, Ohio, Chicago, Indiana and Kentucky. “I work for the Student Development Company,” explained area native and Ohio State student, Dean Giarrizzo. Giarrizzo was involved in the program last year as a production manager under his brother, David in the Chesterland, Ohio area. In this position he was responsible for overseeing the crew on each job and talking to the customers making sure they were meeting their needs and keeping them up-to-date. “He ran a $55,000 business with a partner, John Fairfeild. They had about six full-time employees throughout the summer.” This year, his older brother David will be Dean’s executive, helping him with marketing materials and advice while Dean is drumming up the business and managing his own accounts. Dean has also been assigned the Chesterland area but would like to expand his territory to include his

vacation area of Chautauqua Lake. The Falcon’s Club is a new development by a father and son team and in the finishing stages of the first set of condos that have been revamped. It offers ease of maintenance, lakeside appeal and generous proportions. The Falcon’s Club, formerly the Falcon’s Nest, sits down a long swooping drive to unobstructed views of Chautauqua Lake. The refurbished and updated condos are some of the largest on the lake. On the expansive grounds, the new tennis court is already in place; soon the rest of the grounds will be landscaped to “golf course-like” presence, according to Donna Breen of Century 21 Turner Brokers. Additionally, a basketball court for the use of the condo owners has also been recently completed. The owners are in the golf course business and use this background knowledge in revamping the landscape design. This gorgeous piece of property sits on six hundred feet of lakefront, with dock in place.

The project will ultimately house 16 condos and a few small cottages. There is a lot of space to play, both inside and out. Children will find the site particularly appealing with lots of room to play right on the lake. The townhomes are on the Southside of the lake and take advantage of the spectacular sunsets Chautauqua Lake has to offer. “When finished, it’s going to be a fantastic place” said Breen, “the condos are large and the amenities are amazing.” They afford the owners privacy and ease of maintenance. While homes require maintenance and constant upkeep, owning a condo gives the owner the freedom to come and go without having to worry about mowing the lawn or trimming the hedges. The condominiums are being fully refurbished and include hickory floors, granite counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms, high ceilings and an abundance of space for the growing family. Each unit is between 2,700 and 3,500 feet, giving the homeowners ample space to lounge. The condos of

Sunday, June 6, 2010 the Charlie Daniels Band will take stage at the Seneca Allegany Casino at 4pm. Famous for his contributions to Country and Southern Rock, Daniels is a singer, guitarist and fiddler who began writing and performing in the 50’s. He worked as a session musician for a number of years, backing up talents like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Daniels began to make a name for himself in ’72 with his second album, Honey in the Rock, but it was in 1979 when he won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which reached #3 on the charts, that he solidified his name in history. The Villager had an opportunity to speak with Daniels about his long-lived career, some of his career highlights, when he knew he had “made it,” and what people can expect to see when they come to his show this Sunday in Salamanca. “I have experienced so many great moments,” Daniels said, “my career spans almost fifty years. I’ve played all fifty states and just about every

town in them. I’ve played other countries for people who don’t even speak English; that always fascinates me. Its day-to-day business, I never sit back and say, ‘I got it made’ or ‘I’ve made it.’ You’re basically just as good as your last concert, and you have to ‘keep on keeping on.’ Every concert we perform the songs people have a perfect right to expect us to do; our hits that are played on the radio, but every year we come up with a new show and we will always entertain you.” Daniels is a noted political activist and has traveled twice to Iraq and Kuwait in support of the U.S. Troops as part of the Stars and Stripes tour. “Its hard to explain what it’s like being in a combat zone,” noted Daniels. “It’s different than anything I’ve ever done. The more I’m among the military people, the more I’m convinced that they are the best bunch of people we have, and it’s an honor to be around them.” Recently, Daniels has written an introduction to and edited a collection of heartfelt essays from an all-star cast of contributors, including Dolly Parton, Toby Keith, Clint Black and former President Jimmy

Carter, on what it means to grow up country. ‘Growing Up Country: What Makes Country Life Country,’ compiles deeply personal stories from these country greats about what growing up country means to them. The Villager asked Daniels about the new venture and how he was involved. “I was approached by a gentleman who had grown up in an epic situation,” he stated, “and he asked me if I would be able to participate. I wrote the introduction and made many suggestions on who to feature. These aren’t stories you are going to read about, they are experiences, and the one common thread in them all is the big emphasis on family everyone has.” Daniels has solidified himself throughout history with his music and passion. JAMESTOWN, NY - The Southern Tier Kidney Association will hold its annual Kidney Walk on Sunday, June 13th to help make a difference in the lives of the more than 15,000 individuals in Chautauqua County who are affected by chronic kidney disease. Mayor Sam Teresi will once again be honorary event chairperson. The committee has set a $40,000 goal for the 2010 walk. The money raised from the Kidney Walk will help provide emergency assistance to kidney patients from the community, expand educational programs, help those whose lives depend on a dialysis machine and to also help those in need of a kidney

transplant find altruistic living donors. The Western New York Kidney Connection will hand out information to those who wish to find out how they can become a living donor and save lives. Check in begins at noon, with the walk starting at 1:00 PM. As part of the Kidney Walk, a butterfly release will be conducted to honor those who have helped others through organ and tissue donation. The names of those being celebrated will be read at the beginning of the kidney walk and the live butterflies will be released. JBC Supports Community JAMESTOWN, NY – Over the past several weeks, Jamestown Business College Bachelor degree students joined together in competition, all for a common goal: giving back to the community. Bachelor degree students, as a part of JBC’s Business Strategy class, were challenged to plan, design, market, and execute a business that could be profitable within the college community. Divided into a three-week competition, the student groups incorporated strategy and technique that had been highlighted in class to make their business successful – with the ultimate goal of donating all profits to local charities. As a result of the learning activity, a total of nearly $1,150 was donated to three local charities: Little Ella, Breast Cancer Awareness, and the Salvation Army’s Fund for Haitian Relief. JBC Associate Academic Dean and class instructor, Gretchen Lindell, said that the energy of the students far exceeded her

expectations. “They responded well to the activity right from the start,” she said. “Once they had chosen their charities, and started interacting with local businesses for support, the project really took off. I’m very proud.” Several local businesses helped make this student activity at success through generous donations.

Uncle Gino’s KitchenScallops Eleganza; Serves Four

This recipe is included in the Vol.3 of Natural Italian Cooking: Buon Gusto, by Gino Micciche.

ingredients:12 large fresh scallops1 stick butter1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil1 medium size red pepper1 medium size yellow pepper1 tsp. fresh rosemary leaves (finely chopped)½ c. sweet white vermouth3 Tbs. heavy creamSalt and pepper to taste

PreParation:Cut peppers in halves, remove seeds and inside white ridges. Then, cut them lengthwise into fine strips and set aside. In a medium size nonstick frying pan on medium high

heat, add ½ stick of butter and the olive oil. As soon as the butter starts melting, very carefully, add the scallops and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until they are golden in color. At this point, add vermouth

and rosemary. Gently toss them around until the wine has evaporated. ( takes 1 minute) Remove frying pan from the stove and one by one transfer the scallops to a platter. Return the frying pan to the stove on medium heat and add the pepper strips. Stir well and cook for 5 minutes. Transfer the cooked peppers to a large platter. Immediately add the rest of the butter and the cream. Whisk until the liquid is well incorporated. Remove frying pan from the stove and set aside.Serving: Place 3 cooked scallops at the center of a serving plate surrounded with cooked pepper strips. Spoon the creamy sauce over the scallops.

coordinator Mike Sullivan was asked about his summer lineup, he replied “Where to begin with over 2,100 events?” Featuring Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Gretchen Wilson, Drake Bell, The Oakridge Boys, and performers from Dancing With The Stars – to name a few – there’s sure to be something to suit the whole family. The season kicks off on June 26 with a performance from the original Broadway cast of The Jersey Boys in Concert. “The Jersey Boys are sure to be a popular event,” says Sullivan, “we’ve been selling tickets like crazy right off the bat.” Not just musical events are happening in the amphitheater; additionally, there are special studies courses and lectures, with something happening every night of the season. The symphony orchestra will also perform on most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, according to Sullivan. “For our end-of-the-season weekend special, we

are offering 3 back to back shows,” says Sullivan. On Thursday, August 26, there is a 50’s Dance Party, which is a recreation of the 1959 final tour of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Boppers. On Friday, Aug. 27, rock and roll star from the 1950’s Neil Sedaka is performing. Lastly, on Saturday, Aug. 28, stand-up comedian Bob Newhart is performing.
