St. John Medical Center honored its many volunteers at a festive Volunteer Apprecia-tion Luncheon hosted at Avon Oaks Country Club on April 16.

SJMC President William A. Young and Sr. Judith Ann Karam, Congregational Leader, Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, welcomed the volunteers with enthusiasm and grati-tude. “Last year, you provided an incredible 49,000 hours of service to St. John Medical Center,” said Young to the several hundred in attendance.

Special recognition went to Anthony Iezzi, PhD, who has accumulated over 13,000 hours in volunteer time. Others receiving special recognition also included Ardis Radak, 9,500 hours, Jackie Borzecki, 8,500 hours, Gertrude McDonald, 7,500 hours, Clarence Coder, 6,500 hours and Mary Cain and Carol Riodan with 6,000 hours.

A highlight came when volunteer Chet Roberts asked Mr. Young and other members of the SJMC administration to stand for a round of applause. “As volunteers, we want to thank you for creating a hospi-tal of excellence that makes it an honor for us to serve here. When we hear remarks from patients about the quality of care they receive at St. John Medical Center, it makes it easy for us to enjoy being here,” said Roberts.

Thank you, St. John Medical Center VolunteersSt. John Medical Center’s Dr. Eiad Sayed may not be able to stop the war in Syria.

But he is able to help children, one child at a time. With that mission in mind, Dr. Sayed goes back to the

war ravaged nation two and three times a year to assist ref-ugees at the Zataari Camp on the Jordanian border.

“You have to find the good things that you can and think about them. We look at what’s right with this and we magnify it, and it is the children,” said Dr. Sayed last week from his offices at St. John Medical Center.

“This is what we do for the children. It is what people

in missions work do. They find what is right and that is how we find our real purpose in life.”

Dr. Sayed has been travelling to the Zataari Camp for over two years now. He takes donated medical equipment, healthcare supplies and, most of all, hope. He has seen the camp swell from 15,000 refugees to over 150,000.

Every time he goes, he encounters a new form of heartbreak. Last summer, it was the story of young girls whom rebels made a sport of shooting.

This time - in March - it was burn victims. Dr. Sayed puzzled over the cause of all the burns until he learned that lack of elec-

trical service meant people were lighting living quarters with candles that set homesite and tents ablaze in the night.

Add that to the misery of poison gas, displaced fami-lies and lack of the basic essentials of life, and you have a humanitarian crisis that has been at global proportions for several years now.

The challenge fuels Dr. Sayed’s zeal to help. It is a feel-ing he says most relief workers share.

“We feel like we have known each other for life on the first day. You have a new family now. It is a giant wheel and we are all cogs in it,” said Dr. Sayed. “We are there to help the kids. The children are traumatized. It is a war and a war zone. The PTSD is everywhere. We help them, one kid at a time, like Schindler’s List. Our mission is to treat them psychologically, to treat them physically and to help them reach their potential.”

Relief efforts have led to the establishment of the Maleki-Salaam Center there. “We can treat 30 kids for up to three months,” re-ports Dr. Sayed. “We teach

finding yourselfAND your salary ina passion project.

We can all pat ourselves on the back as we’ve made it through, what was at times, a very brutal winter. Spring is right around the corner so enjoy watching the trees and flowers start to bud.

During these challenging economic times, things have certainly changed for all of us. People are going through life changes that they might not have experienced in years, but especially if someone has lost their job. It’s interest-ing that many people who have never cared about the way their smile looked before because they may have been in the same job for many years now require a little bit of a makeover now that they are back in the job hunt.

Teeth whitening is an easy way to brighten your smile and is very cost effective. For many people, we are not finding it is an elective procedure any more, but it is neces-

sary in order to build their own self-confidence and pres-ent themselves authoritatively to others. You and I both know many successful people who are known for having that winning smile.

Fixing those chipped and cracked front teeth are also part of that winning smile. Many times these broken teeth can be fixed with conservative tooth colored restorative materials that are bonded to the tooth for strength and beauty. There are many simple fixes that can be done to give you the appearance of nice, white, straight teeth. An upgraded smile definitely can give you a boost of self-es-teem.

Call us today at 440-892-1810 for any of your dental needs, whether it is a second opinion or a free consultation. We are here to help you smile.

Undervaluation is as problematic as it is prevalent among the self-employed. Elevate classic self-employment to the level of a passion project, and the fear of charging for services really settles in. The bottom line is that deciding what to charge and charging it transcends the exchange of money and truly determines the worth of your project.

The goal of a true passion project is not financial. But, just because you would do it without getting paid doesn’t mean you should. Price is the strongest indicator of value in American society. Lowering the price lowers the perceived value and worth of your project. If your presence and con-tribution have worth, they must be properly valued.....

them how to survive and how to feel secure. They have shut down psychologically, but we have connected them to psy-chological care and within a week we start to hear feedback. Most of the children are about 6 up to 14 years old.”

The challenge, said Dr. Sayed, is to save children’s minds before they are hardened for life.

“The most important thing is to teach them how to trust. I want them to know they have friends here overseas, that we are all human, brothers and sisters in the same hu-manity,” said Dr. Sayed.

“They have to learn by the third grade that we need to

understand one another and not hurt each other. That is one reason we went the week of March 21, because it was Mother’s Day there. All the children were coming to us ask-ing what we had in our pockets that they could give their mothers. You want to make them feel normal.”

As for the burn vic-tims, Dr. Sayed reports there is a solution and it is simple: Solar night lights. They only cost $8 each and they save lives.

One fire that will never be put out, however, is Dr. Sayed’s burning commit-ment to help a nation and

its children. “I can beat ISIS. I can beat Assad. I can beat Hitler - If I make the children feel safe and secure and edu-cate them,” said Dr. Sayed. “You have to stay the course.”

Or simply stop and talk to Dr. Sayed as he patrols the halls at St. John Medical Center on his professional mission here at home. He would love to hear from you.

Happy Birthday, Betty Huckleberry! Betty celebrated her 100th birthday on Wed., April 22,

with a festive party at The Normandy Apartments in Rocky River.

Betty has been a resident of The Normandy for 14 years. The party room was filled with friends from both the Normandy residence and community.

“I have always been healthy, and I have lived a placid life,” said Betty when asked about her recipe for longevity. “And I have lived here for 14 years and have never been in want for anything.”

Family members on hand included her grandson Dan Huckelberry and his wife, Christine.

The party room was vibrant with music and conversa-tion. More than 50 guests shared memory cards of their best reminiscences of Betty. A large placard carried a repro-duction of The Cleveland Press from April 21, 1915. It was the day of the Cleveland Indians home opener at League Park. Play money added to the fun with Betty’s picture on $100 dollar bills. And, of course, there was a large birthday cake for Betty, and she even blew out the candles.

A great day for a great lady. Happy Birthday. Betty Huckleberry!

Happy 100th, Betty Huckleberry!

Want to learn more about the latest craze in technol-ogy: Drones?

Drones are those unmanned aircraft and helicopter devices that are seen everywhere on TV these days.

A special program on Drones will be presented at The Normandy Senior Living Retirement Community, 22701 Lake Road, Rocky River on May 13 at 7 p.m. It will feature live demonstrations.

Drones (or Unmanned Aircraft Systems) global mar-ket is projected to become a $94 billion industry by 2020. The Northern Ohio Region is aptly poised to capture a large portion of the market. But taking the lead is going to mean closing the gap and finding solutions to the potential market barriers to entry.

The presentation by Matthew Mishak, Director of the Northern Ohio Unmanned Aircraft Systems Association, will explore the history of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, system elements and applications.

“We will examine the industry challenges of safety, pri-vacy, public misconceptions and regulatory hurdles,” says Mishak.

Considering Northern Ohio’s manufacturing strengths, industry clusters and niche specialties, Northern Ohio must now take the lead and wholly invest in this po-tential opportunity.

As Director of the Northern Ohio Unmanned Aircraft Systems Association, Mishak promotes the safe and non-intrusive use and industry of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and aerial robotics in Northern Ohio. Mr. Mishak has been interested and involved with unmanned aircraft systems since 2008. His interests range from the robust and developing field of UAS law and policy to the design and manufacturing of UAS from the ground up. He is inspired by the incredible potential of UAS to revive the economy, especially within the “rust-belt” regions of Ohio. He enjoys teaching and helping to build a knowledgeable local com-munity around UAS, one of the most transformative new

technologies of our life-time.

Come Enjoy a Weekend of Free Fishing May 2-3

Ohio is known for its world class fishing, and on May 2 and 3, you can experience it for free. All Ohio residents are invited to take part in Ohio’s annual free fishing weekend May 2 and 3, without purchasing a fishing license, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Ohio’s Free Fishing Days are open to all Ohio resi-dents and extend to all of Ohio’s public waters, includ-ing Lake Erie and the Ohio River. An estimated 1.3 million people fish each year in Ohio, and the ODNR Division of Wildlife stocked more than 43 million fish in 2014. Ohio’s waters are populated with a wide variety of fish species so anglers might hook steelhead trout, walleye, saugeye, crappie, yellow perch, bass, bluegill and catfish.

The Free Fishing Days weekend offers Ohioans of all ages the chance to experience the fun of catching a fish. This is a good weekend for taking a youngster out fishing.

Fishing licenses are available at participating agents and wildohio.gov.

The Youth Challenge Gallery Gala Annual Benefit and Auction was held on Saturday, April 18 amidst the festive and unique environs of 78th St. Studios in Cleveland.

Several hundred generous guests enjoyed the unique venue that resulted in a night of essential fundraising with this one-of-a-kind organization headquartered in West-lake. Youth Challenge benefits children age 4-18 with vari-ous physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and sensory impairments.

Youth Challenge runs with the help of teen volunteers who are paired one-on-one with participants at each pro-gram.

Youth Challenge “Gallery Gala” is a Hit at 78th St. Studios

Saturday’s Gallery Gala was highlighted by two young men, volunteer Nick Morris and participant Jordan Wil-liams, who took themselves out of their comfort zones to share their stories with guests in support of the Youth Chal-lenge ‘Fund-a-Need’ initiative.

“At Youth Challenge, we know that everyone has the ability to be an athlete, an artist, a friend,” said Founder and Executive Director Mary Sue Tanis. “For the past 39 years, our organization has worked to make sports and rec-reational activities accessible for children with physical dis-abilities. We do so in a unique way - by pairing the children one-on-one with a teen volunteer partner. Participants are

encouraged to push themselves out of their comfort zones to try new things and to achieve what they never thought possible.”

Youth Challenge participants come from over 8 county areas. This year, YC will offer more than 300 adapted ac-tivities throughout the Cleveland area. More than 165 chil-dren with physical disabilities and 450 teen volunteers will take part. All activities are free of charge.
