VILLAGE HALL AWARDED A GRANT FROM

THE RANK FOUNDATION

The Village Hall Trustees are pleased to announce that they were successful in their application to the Rank Pebbles Fund for ‘Refurbishment of the Village Hall kitchen’. The main aim of these grants is towards capital costs (building work, refurbishment or the purchase of long-term equipment) or a one-off short-term activity. We have been awarded a grant of £800. Whilst this will not, of course, pay for the full kitchen refurbishment, every little helps, and we are extremely grateful to the Rank Foundation for their generosity.

For those of you wondering why progress has not been faster, the reason is that we have had to deal with a significant crack in the kitchen wall. We obtained professional advice from Peter Goodhind, who, with the help of Knaresboro Homes (from Ellis Bank), dug an inspection pit outside of the rear kitchen door to check the foundations. All was in order, so we were advised to remove the tall silver birch tree (many thanks to the parishioner who did this for us) and simply wait for the ground to re-settle. The new cooker is now installed, and we hope to show more progress in the New Year.

AND...

The Village Hall won £1,000 in Ecclesiastical Insurance’s “12 Days of Giving” free lottery for charities! Thank you to everyone who increased our odds, just by applying. If you want to make sure you’re on the list for things like this in future please contact Paula Ruffley on [email protected] & ask to be added to Mailchimp.

The Whist Drive The December whist drive had a festive feel to it with prizes of chocolates, biscuits, wine, groceries etc chosen by the lucky winners of both the whist and the raffle. Thanks are due to all those who kindly gave prizes which reflected in the proceeds being more than usual - £90. As always thank you too, for the kitchen helpers and those who set up and put away the tables and chairs. Thanks are also due to the hall committee who gave of their time on the Sunday decorating the Christmas tree and making the Village Hall look festive.

The next monthly whist drive will be on Monday 7th January at Minsterworth Village Hall, 7.30pm. Over recent years the number of players has declined, so if you would like to give it a go then please come along and enjoy a friendly evening.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION MINSTERWORTH AND DISTRICT

At the time of going to Press the amount of monies collected from our Poppy Boxes and generous donations amounted to the grand sum of £4,200.00. There are other boxes to be counted and included in the total amount. Thank you to everyone who donated for this very special event. I’m sure we were all very sad to learn of the death of Cyril Martin who was a great character and the backbone of the Westbury-on-Severn Royal British Legion for many many years. I would like to thank everyone for the support I have received as Chairman of Minsterworth & District Royal British Legion. It has been a great honour and privilege to have served the branch for the last 14 years. I can assure you that I will give the same commitment to the branch in my post as Vice Chairman. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday January 9th 2019. A very happy New Year to you all.

The December book choice was Fools and Mortals by Bernard Cornwell.

It is set in Elizabethan England’s theatreland when young Richard Shakespeare is trying to make his way in life but is dominated by his big brother William... and when a priceless manuscript goes missing it becomes a theatrical whodunnit... brought to life by brilliant background research.

Most people found it a good read and it was well received on the whole. Nicky Milligan In January there will be no book review as we will meet for lunch. Ring Vicki on 07515 255685 for further information.

Wreath making Twenty-two ladies turned up for the evening with foliage and secateurs ready to make their Christmas door wreaths. Some of them were already experienced in making wreaths but there were several 'novices' as well. With Christmas music in the background, mince pies, homemade biscuits (thank you Liz) the atmosphere was fun and hugely enjoyable. At the end of the evening we had a look at each other’s masterpieces, all so different in colour, texture and design. To coin that famous expression 'Didn't they do well' - I think everyone made a lovely wreath.

The proceeds of £100 were split £55 to Minsterworth Village Hall and £45 to St. Peter’s Church Minsterworth.

THANK YOU

Suddenly surprising us on Saturday 17 November, Farzana (Aldridge) with others helping, gathered as many friends as could be contacted for a spontaneous party at The Village Hall. This was a few days before our departure for Newnham on Severn. We had been exactly 40 years and 4 months living at The Naight House in Minsterworth.

The food and drink served up for us all on the occasion was absolutely stupendous and only surpassed by the wonderful friendliness of everyone there.

Paula and I wish to thank Farzana and everyone for our and her friends’ evening to remember. We wish everyone in Minsterworth a very Happy New Year.

EXON DOMESDAY – THE INTRODUCTION OF A WHOLE NEW LANGUAGE TO

THE GOOD FOLK OF MINSTERWORTH! We were privileged to have Dr Chris Lewis from the Institute of Historical Research and Kings College London address us at the village hall on Friday 30th November. In the Domesday Book, Minsterworth is described as ‘a place with no name’, although The Duni and Westbury are mentioned.

The Angles and Saxons invaded and settled in Britain in the 5th century. In 1066 England (named after the Angles) was ruled by two Anglo-Saxon Kings, Edward the Confessor, who died in January, and Harold II, who was defeated by William Duke of Normandy in October 1066. It was in 1086, when William was staying at his Lodge in Kingsholm, that the idea of the Domesday book was formulated. Inspectors were sent out to record the ownership of all property in the land. This was recorded in Exon Domesday.

The talk by Chris Lewis centred mainly around the method of tax collection in 1086, and to be able to understand the mechanics of this we were first introduced to a whole new vocabulary! Hundred – a large area of land relevant to tax collection

Hide – an area of land sufficient to support a family, and the amount of land that could be ploughed by a family. Roughly 120 acres. There were four virgates to every hide. Also referred to as a sub-division of the shire (or county) used for administrative purposes.

Virgate – a smaller area of land, approximately 30 acres A Plough (of land) - When Domesday refers to the number of ‘ploughs’ it is referring to the taxable amount of land that can be ploughed by a team of eight oxen. Thus, land ‘for half a plough’ (or ‘for four oxen’) means half a plough of land.

Geld – the tax collected, most of it in silver pennies

Demesne – an area of land retained by the Lord of the Manor for his own use

Villan – A Villan was an unfree peasant who owed his lord labour services (two or three days per week) but who also farmed land for himself. Villans were the wealthiest and most numerous of unfree peasants. Also called villains or villeins.

Bordar – an unfree peasant with less land than a villan

Fief - Land granted in return for military service. Also called fee.

Arpent - An Old French measurement used in Domesday in relation to the vineyards.

Thegn – an order of nobility in Anglo-Saxon England before the Norman Conquest. The ranking, in descending order, was Earl, King’s thegn and median thegn.

For more information on Domesday see the web site: www.exondomesday.ac.uk/

Thank You!

A massive number of shoeboxes (136 in total) have been received by the poorest children and adults in Eastern Romania (Danube Delta), Western Romania, Belarus and Ukraine; courtesy of your generosity. Westbury on Severn CofE Primary School, Walmore Hill Primary School and many residents of local villages once again took part to ensure families’ Christmases were brightened by these acts of thought and love. It has been said that the ‘kindest thing one can do is to do something for someone you will never meet’ and you have certainly proved that point! Can I once again also thank Pavers in Gloucester Quays who saved boxes for Westbury on Severn pupils to fill.

A huge Thank You from Eastern Europe and from both Jayne and myself. Kind Regards, Elaine.

In the late 1960’s Jayne Bros decided to finance the formation of a club called ‘The White House Water Ski Club’. It was formally opened by Fred Rowbotham who was District Engineer for the Lower Severn District of the Severn River Authority. The Club was first run by Arthur Jayne, Roger Jayne and local friends including John Afflick, Ted Bennett, Rony Ford and Robert Jackman. As news spread, members from Painswick, Chepstow and Birmingham joined. More about Minsterworth Water Ski Club is available on Minsterworth’s Facebook page. Did you know there was one?

A Brief History of Minsterworth Water Ski Club By Roger and Betty Jayne

The history of Minsterworth Water Ski Club goes back to a small beginning almost 60 years ago. It is located at The Flatt, Main Road, Minsterworth GL2 8JX.

The slipway was first built as a private enterprise by ‘Jayne Bros’. The business of ‘Jayne Bros’ was started after the War in 1945 by Arthur and Cecil Jayne at ‘The White House,’ Minsterworth carrying out agricultural repairs and contracting. Then in 1953 ‘The White House Garage’ was built on land at the end of the garden. In 1958 the piece of land south of the garage was purchased for parking of business and sales vehicles. The White House Garage in 1953.

Also in 1958 Arthur Jayne decided to purchase a small cabin cruiser and named it after his wife, Constance Vera. He then needed a place to launch his boat. In 1959 Arthur and his son Roger, after obtaining permission from the then Severn River Authority, constructed a slipway from the garage car park to the River Severn. Constance Vera was launched from there and was enjoyed by the Jayne family on a regular basis. However, the Severn tides caused problems by continually silting up the slipway.

Then in 1960 a local man, Fred Larkham, who had bought his first JCB, cleared the mud away and continued to construct the slipway with a concrete base and walls each side which could be hosed down when it got covered in Severn mud.

In 1962 a local Forest of Dean man, Chas Phipps, stopped and asked if he could use the slipway to launch his speedboat to attempt water skiing. As the river is tidal with no speed limit it was decided to give permission to do this. That year water skiing took place for the first time from the slipway with Roger Jayne driving the boat for Chas Phipps. As the year progressed, a number of their friends joined them water skiing on the Severn. Continued on p19

Severnside Stitchers

Severnside Stitchers is a sewing group of around thirty ladies who want to spend time with each other sharing their interests and inspiration.

We meet fortnightly throughout the year at Northwood Green Social Hall where we work on our own & group projects. These include patchwork and quilting, embroidery, felting and just “Anything with a needle” encompassing both traditional and modern techniques.

We have just held a successful exhibition at Minsterworth Village Hall during early October, we showcased two years of our work and transformed the Hall into a riot of colour and fabric.

There was a raffle quilt, tombola, mini workshops and delicious refreshments which all helped to raise money for Nightstop, a local charity helping homeless young people and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. A stunning display of poppies greeted our visitors as they entered the Hall.

Next year we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. If anyone is interested in joining us & would like to be added to the waiting list please e-mail: [email protected]

Minsterworth Village Hall – Huge Thanks

It’s been a great year for the Hall; lots of great events organised by residents and plenty of bookings from outside the village. The Affordable Housing finished to-schedule and we are indebted to Rooftop Housing for helping with a wide range of tasks in completing the landscaping and car-parking. The installation of the new kitchen has been hindered by subsidence meaning a tree had to be felled and structural engineers consulted. But we do have a wonderful new range oven, and hope to embark on work shortly.

In the meantime, can we say a huge thank-you to those of you who – organised events, parked cars, baked goods, organised raffles, cleaned and tidied, cleared gutters, cut hedges, sold tickets, attended events ……………you all know who you are and the hall wouldn’t operate without your on-going support.

We’re looking forward to a great 2019, please continue to support your village hall, and let us know of any events you’d either like to organise yourselves, or suggest activities you’d like to see.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year
