Team Coordinator
Your Regional Management Team is so thankful for Region 2'ssupport by sending the team to the 2017 InternationalEducation Symposium at the University of Maryland in
College Park, Maryland.
One of the classes I attended was presented by Ryan Heller, Master700 Director of Pride of Portland Chorus. Following is the handoutfrom the class.
“The Artistic Singing for All Levels” class had a special guest:Frenzy 2017, SAI International Quartet Champions. The objectiveof this course was to identify the elements of artisticsinging/performing and explore strategies to develop an artisticproduct at any level.
What is artistry? Webster’s defines artistry as: • artistic quality of effect or workmanship• artistic ability
Artistry can be technical and planned, but no matter the level, the objective is always the same – to communicate with ouraudiences.
As stated in SAI’s JCDB (expression category): “The goal of the performer is to project a sentiment appropriate to the song andto produce an emotional response in the listener.”
Ryan used the quartet Frenzy to illustrate each of the points in his presentationELEMENTS OF AN ARTISTIC PRESENTATIONEnergized Vocal Line Tempo/RhythmTone Flow InflectionDynamic Flexibility EnergyVocal Style FinesseLyric Flow EmotionalPhrasing CommunicationForward Motion CharacterizationEmbellishments Audience rapport
ENERGYVocal Musical Lyrical Physical Why separate? Integrate!
To achieve unity, we must first have a specified plan. The plan is not putting our performance in a box, but aboutpresenting a unified whole to our audience. After all, one on one communication is the most profound: one ensemble
communicating with one audience is our ultimate goal. Once in agreement, we can then apply all of our skills so that theperformance transcends as much technique as possible!
Remember: You are an artist, with the power to change lives!

Top Ten Things from I.E.S. # Jeanne LundbergDirectors Coordinator
Ha! Did this get your attention?
Everybody likes Top Ten Lists: top ten choruses, quartets, sports teams, movies of all time, baby names, recipes forchili? – you name it! So, here are some Top Ten ideaslearned from the International Education Symposium – themost recent, and one tip from a past I.E.S. – listed inrandom order.
1. There’s no such thing as “running a song.” Do notexercise the muscle of auto-pilot. Give everything inrehearsal, to give everything in performance! No phoningit in!
2. Big Picture: there are three things that can improve yourpoints across all four categories: vocal skills, unity, energy.
3. Breathe above the pitch about to be sung.
4. Just as you need to get up to the notes, you need to getup to the emotion!
5. To avoid vocal fatigue, be sure you’re talking with goodsupport and lack of tension. Take vocal “naps” throughoutthe day of performance or rehearsal.
6. Time management – Work measures, not phrases orwhole sections of music. Why rehearse what’s alreadygood? Spend time on problem spots. Learn to start there, instead of backing it WAY up.
7. To fix vibrato, put sound in the mask; lower the singer’sbreathing location, help her relax her neck and shoulders.Use humming, then sing it.
8. On all phrases, enter with grace, release with style.
9. Manage breathing, in order to maintain quality of sound, from initiation to release.
10. Why do we sing? To connect with our audience, tomake them feel the message of the song! Put everythinginto it. If you’re bored, you’re not doing it right!
What would be your Ten? Come to Fall Regional Weekendto take away ten things to fill your own bucket, plus yourchorus or quartet! I bet your bucket will be overflowing.See you there!
The New Grant Program#Nancy Liedel Education Coordinator
In 2017, your Region 2 Management Team developed agrant program. This program was established to takethe place of the Winter Regional Educational event that
was poorly attended and very expensive.
This new program is agrant for a day ofeducation organized bythe chorus or quartetthat is awarded thegrant. The morningsession is a master classby an InternationalFaculty and theafternoon session is acoaching session that is
open to the attendees for observation.
The grant pays half of the event up to $1,500. If we awardfour of these grants a year, it is still less than half of theamount we spend on the Winter Regional event. Plus, wewill reach more members.
We chose three choruses as a pilot to work out all the bugsbefore rolling the grant out to the region. All three eventswere a huge success! Our purpose is to reach as manymembers of Region 2 as we can with a high level ofeducation. It’s almost impossible to gather everyone in oneplace, so we decided to send the education out to themasses. We hope you will consider applying for this grant!Have no fear! We will assist you with whatever you need tomake your day a success!
Instructions and the applications have been sent to yourpresidents and team leaders. Make sure to ask them aboutit!
If you have questions, feel free to contact me or thechoruses that ran the pilot program: London Chorus,Grand Traverse Chorus, and Motor City Blend Chorus.

Director Certification Program (DCP)#Peggi Starkey
Iwas reminiscing about how many years I have been the DCPC (Coordinator). Actually, I don’t have theamount of years, but I found records from 2005! So perhaps it has been 12 years!
Over these wonderful 12 years, I have met many wonderful people! I have provided inspiration andencouragement to these people to aspire their ambitions and goals. They are your leaders!
Yesterday I went through my files of people that I havecertified. There were 22 people! Twenty of those aredirectors, assistant directors, or past directors. Two ofthem are chorus members. So you can see by these numbers that the majority ofdirectors are already certified! If this program is tocontinue, we need to tap into the assistant directors, thesection leaders, and the members to take that step of faithinto their own, personal, growth as an individual, and as amusical person in our Sweet Adelines world. Some of the things for you to know: the DCP is open toanyone. It is a self-study course, (you purchase themodules from Sweet Adelines International.) You take the“tests” at most any of the regional weekends. You take it atyour own speed, however, I encourage you to take morethan one test at a weekend. If you want, you can take a testover. The purpose is to gain knowledge about singing andthe organization of Sweet Adelines. And lastly, there is notime limit. Take as long as you want. Ask anyone who hastaken the course how they feel about completing the DCP.
Here is the list so you can be recognized:
Chris Arnold, Delored Alexander, Julia Beadle, HeidiBowman, Ruth Carmichael, Maria Christian, Judy
Hendrickson, Diane Hingston, Liana Jennings, Merry LuJordan, Kelli Kelly, Barb Kilcoyne, Heather Kingham,
Katy Bean Larson, Joan Minns, Lynn Peirce, KarenRomanson, Michelle St. Onge-Mitchell, Lisa Thompson,
Cheryl Wagner, Jill Watson, and Debra Wilton.
Congratulations to you all for completing the DCP
and for being a part of my life!
I am currently working on a MusicalMindset Course for Sweet Adelines to growin their way of thinking skills to help themto be a better Sweet Adeline.
Since our thinking creates our tomorrows, I feel it isimperative to learn HOW to think more purposefully. Inturn, you’ll work on your habits, which will change youractions, which will now change your life.
The definition of insanity is to do things the same way, butexpect different results. This class will help you to channelyour way of thinking for a more deliberate result.
Whether you want to compete with more confidence, oryou are curious as to how thinking can make a differencein your life, this class is for you! It is designed for you andaround you. So, if you want to have an input, please emailme at [email protected]. (notice I spell my namewith an “i”) and your suggestions will be considered for aninsertion to a class.
This class is a new way for you to grow, either after theDCP, or in conjunction with the DCP. Or you can take itseparately from the DCP. My monthly calendar said,September is a great month to support others in becomingmore prosperous. I am here to help you!
HARMONY CAMP ~~ Peggy Silver
We are looking forward to having a Harmony Camp for girls and guys in the spring of 2018. We are asking for your helpin finding a central LOCATION and DATE in Michigan that will serve our membership.
A few weeks ago, all chorus presidents were sent a survey and asked to forward it to their chorus membership. It would begreat if our members would share their thoughts regarding especially a good central location, possible venues and suggestionsfor dates that work with few event conflicts in your areas.
While we are not asking for your chorus to organize the event, we will need assistance from all choruses for support on the dayof the event. Right now we are looking for suggestions and input from you. Thanks so much to those who have shared ideaswith us. Let’s all help make Harmony Camp a huge success in 2018.

The Mature Voice – Darlene Rogers, faculty
Darlene states that the Mature Voicestarts at age 30.
Some signs of aging: Muscles lose bulkand elasticity, Movements oncegraceful are now hesitant, Hans andfeet are cold, Muscles can atrophy, andmoving joints are awkward andpainful. You can also add balance, hearing, memory, vision.
General Effects of aging on thevoice:
M Decrease in vocal range – toextend our range, start with soundsnot singing, like a monkey sound, small dog, big dog. Exercise on aregular bases using bubbling onarpeggios. Keep sound on high soundand breathe in steady stream. Note: Sing, Baby, Sing CD The Maturing Voice,Track 10.
M Loss of upper range – useflexibility exercises: Sing, Baby, SingCD 12, Track 24. Move to voice partthat is more suitable. Continue toexercise your voice daily usingbubbling, tongue trill, or ng sound onexercise. Sing, Baby, Sing CD 2, Track 8.
M Change in vibrato - humminganything, for example “My BonnieLies Over The Ocean” (to hum takebottom lip up to top lip). Lightstaccato on “oo” vowel: 5 3 5 3 5 3 1.Sing, Baby, Sing IV track 17.
M Staccato in the mask on the vowel“ee:” 1 1 1 3 3 3 5 5 5 3 3 3 1 1 1. Sing,Baby, Sing IV, track 19.
M Decreased breath control
M Vocal fatigue – your body is tiredand so is your voice. Provide yourselfa graph to track your daily practice, increase a little each day. Be sure youare talking with good breathesupport.
Take vocal naps during the day: 10minutes of silence. Monitor yourselfthat you are not over-singing. Youmight want to bring your own pillowcase when you are attendinginternational competition.
M Poor pitch control – have yourhearing checked. Listen carefully tothe sound around you. Listen, think, sing.
WobblesM Wobbles usually indicate a voicethat is uncomfortable and out ofcontrol.
M By lowering the singer's breathinglocation and helping her to relax theneck muscles, the wobble may stop.
M Trying for too much volume in anincorrect way is often the cause ofwobble.
Breathing Exercise for Wobbles:
· Stand in good posture · Raise either hand straight above yourbody· Inhale, as you sweep the handbehind you, imagining that you aregathering a large quantity of air withthe gesture. As the hand reaches thelowest point of the return trip towardthe front of your body, begin to sing. You may sing anywhere along thenadir of the arc. Don't stop themovement of the hand to sing.

Not Another Breathing Exercise!# Nan Wardin, Events Coordinator
During the many classes held at International Education Symposium 2017 anumber of breathing exercises were taught. We are, after all, Sweet Adelines, and breathing and posture are foundations of performing our craft. Out of the
dozens of exercises taught over the week, one in particular was repeated at leastthree times in the classes that I personally attended. It goes like this:· Stand in a corner facing the walls (No, you are NOT being put in a timeout.)· Place your hands on either wall at about the height of your shoulders.· Put your right foot in front of your left foot about a foot away from the corner.· Now lean into the corner causing a stretch along your chest.· Switch your foot placement so the left foot is now in front of the right foot and . . .· . . . lean into the corner again.· Repeat the stretch about 4-5 times alternating the foot placement.· Lower your arms from the walls, maintaining the posture that the exercise created.· Now sing! It was during a class being instructed by Dale Syverson that best demonstratedwhat this exercise can help produce during singing. The change in the soundproduced by the group after completing this simple exercise was amazing! It wasclear, it was full, and it rang like crazy! The room was filled with the spark of excitement from the experience. I lookedaround and saw the faces of others mirroring my feelings, the feeling of joy that weall get when we are able to sing even one measure of music that causes that electriccurrent to run through our body. And that simple stand-in-the-corner exercise helpedmake all that! It was as the room began to quiet that Dale announced what we asSweet Adelines know – we will never, ever, ever stop learning about breathing!
Judy Sirut# Finance Coordinator
This is the first year that the International Education Symposium has beenoffered since I became a Sweet Adeline six years ago so I was thrilled to attendand represent Region 2! Let me begin by saying that the University of Maryland
is beautiful and the area is filled with the history of our country. The theme for the 2017 I.E.S. was "Back to the Future" and it was quite theexperience. It took me right back to my college days, learning the university layout, change of class, dorm life and the cafeteria. And it was wonderful to see so many newand familiar faces! We had regional leadership training the first day and then we attended 10 differentclasses over the next few days. The international faculty we were able to learn fromwas great! It was a treat to hear Britt-Helene Bonnedahl, director of the internationalchampion Ronninge Show Chorus. She offered tips on singing posture, correctbreathing techniques, etc. One of the classes I attended (Unit Sound: What is it and how do I get some?) wasgiven by three-time queen of harmony and retired Pacific Coast Harmony director,Kim Vaughn. The three areas she discussed were blend, vowels and synchronization.Blend included vocal production issues of maintaining a free and open sound, breathsupport, accuracy, individual skill and range issues, matching resonance of vowelsand the dynamic and interpretive plan. Vowels need to match resonance for optimalring and overtones, they may be effected by the dynamic plan and matching thevowel's shape is important. Finally, synchronization is achieved by having instantaccuracy, instant matching of the target vowel, breath timing, stamina and energy. While we have all heard many of these messages through our coaching sessionsalong the way, Kim's presentation was encouraging and a reinforcement to ourprogress. As we continue to develop our skills in Region 2 – the unit sound is whatwe all want to get!
Marketing # Susan Casey
Iam awestruck! My tenure as yourRegional Marketing Coordinatorhas started off with a bang!
Being inaugurated by our SAIpresident, Paula Davis was anhonour, meeting and learning frommy sister members of our region is aprivilege. The opportunities to bepart of the machinery that makes usBorder Lakes are wonderful.
Going to the International EducationSymposium was absolutelymind-blowing! I was so proud torepresent Border Lakes Region 2.
My Region 2 compatriots weregracious to this newbie. The subjects(based on the movie, “Back to theFuture”) and the faculty more thanexceeded my expectations. Learningwas a pleasure. The food wasfantastic and the University ofMaryland campus accommodationswere spacious.
The special speakers wereinformative and approachable, plusthe Harmony Games, Mixed QuartetsContest and the Rising Stars Contestwere well-organized, entertainingand tremendously fun.
I was asked to be interviewed by alocal Maryland TV station and got tosing tags with our current Queens ofHarmony, Frenzy Quartet. I have alsoincreased my Facebook friendssignificantly.
I figured to deteriorate from all thewalking as the campus was HUGE!My FitBit© Zip showed I was walkingmore than 10,000 steps a day! Myheart and my 7 lb. weight loss saythanks!
I sincerely hope SAI brings back I.E.S.very soon. I, for one, would have noissue in a return engagement.

Greetings Region 2!
Wow it has been quite the summer; I have been to the futureand back again. I had a wonderful time representing ourregion at the International Education Symposium.
I attended a class presented by Paula Davis called Doc Brown'sWisdom for the Future: Membership in the New Millennium. Here Ilearned some very interesting information. We have freedom in howwe operate our chorus life! There are only five international rulesthat dictate how a chorus should operate:
1. 15 or more members + director 2. Pay the charter or renewal fee for the chapter 3. Compete for scoring or evaluation once every three years,
this includes the new open division4. Completion of tax forms for IRS (I believe this is only for
choruses in the USA)5. Required board or team management governance of at
least five members
International doesn't tell us what kind of music to sing outside ofthe contest requirements. It doesn't dictate any particular meetingschedule or calendar for rehearsing and it doesn't providerestrictions on membership or audition practices. This means thatas long as we meet and follow the five requirements, we are free torun our chorus life based on what works best for us. Set up a visionor goal for your chorus and operate around that. Some Strategies that Result in Membership Growth and Retention• Flexibility in membership• Flexibility in attendance• Everybody contributes in some way to chorus life• No-guilt membership or attendance• Effective and timely communication of expectations or
requirements• Energized, positive, productive and fun rehearsals• Developing clear goals and objectives that reflect chorus
desires and priorities• Ongoing and effective communication between members
and leaders• Celebration• Inclusive and supportive culture that provides rewards and
recognition consistently
I look forward to seeing you at Fall Regional Music School! TheStage Coaches are coming! Mary Patrick and I will be hosting aforum for Chorus Presidents/Team Leaders and ChorusMembership Chairs/Co-ordinators on Friday evening, September22.
