finish writing her skripsi entitled: The Use of Participation Point System in
Teaching Speaking for the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 2 Jati Kudus in
Academic Year 2013/2014”.

Speaking as an oral language is one of the important English skills which
are considered essential to be taught in this global era, in which communication
takes an important role in information world. In this research the researcher wants
to discuss one of the many problems connected with English learning. However,
in reality, the students hardly speak actively in their English classes, they tend to
be very quiet and be passive listeners. This may be caused by many psychological
factors, such as fear of making mistakes, shyness, and low motivation. Thus, the
students’ speaking ability is low.
The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant
difference between the ability of English speaking for the eighth grade students of
SMP N 2 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by
using Participation Point System.
This Research is an experimental research which consists of two variables.
There are independent and dependent variable. Here, the independent variable is
the use of Participation Point System that influence to dependent variable, it is the
ability of speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Jati Kudus in
academic year 2013/2014.
The result of the research showed that there were some improvements in
students’ speaking ability. In pre-test, the mean of the speaking ability of the
eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 after
taught by using Participation Point System is 77 and the standard deviation is
6.95. It is good achievement. While, the mean of the speaking ability of the eighth
grade students of SMP N 2 Jati Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 before taught
by using Participation Point System is 65.73 and the standard deviation are 11.06.
It is categorized as sufficient achievement.
Learning from the result, it can be concluded that the use of Participation
Point System can increase the students’ speaking ability. The teacher suggested
using Participation Point System as a technique for teaching another aspect of
English. While, for the further researchers, they are suggested to explore the use
of the other features available in Participation Point System.

Berbicara adalah suatu bahasa lisan yang merupakan salah satu
Ketrampilan Bahasa Inggris yang penting untuk diajar di jaman globalisasi
sekarang ini, di mana komunikasi mengambil suatu peran penting di dalam dunia
informasi. Di penelitian ini peneliti ingin mendiskusikan salah satu permasalahan
yang berhubungan dengan belajar Bahasa Inggris. Bagaimanapun, pada
kenyataannya, para siswa sulit berbicara dengan aktif di dalam kelas Bahasa
Inggris mereka, mereka cenderung pasif dan hanya menjadi pendengar pasif. Ini
mungkin disebabkan oleh faktor kejiwaan banyak orang, seperti takut melakukan
kesalahan, perasaan malu, dan motivasi yang rendah. Karena itu, kemampuan
berbicara siswa menjadi rendah.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah ada suatu
perbedaan penting antara kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas delapan SMP N 2 Jati
Kudus tahun akademi 2013/2014 sebelum dan setelah diajar menggunakan
Participation Point System.
Penelitian ini adalah sebuah penelitian eksperimen, yang mana ada dua
variabel. Yaitu independen dan dependen. Pada penelitian ini, dependen variabel
adalah penggunaan Participation Point System yang mempengaruhi independen
variabel, yaitu kemampuan berbicara pada siswa kelas delapan SMP N 2 Jati
Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan pada
kemampuan berbicara pada siswa. Pada pre-test rata-rata nilai kemampuan
berbicara siswa SMP N 2 Jati Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014 setelah diajar
menggunakan Participation Point System adalah 77 dan standar deviasi nya
adalah 6,95. Itu termasuk dalam kategori nilai baik. Sedangkan nilai rata-rata
siswa sebelum diajar menggunakan Participation Point System adalah 65,73 dan
standar deviasi nya adalah 11,06. Dan di kategorikan sebagai nilai cukup.
Dari hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Participation
Point System dapat meningkatkan kemapuan berbicara siswa. Guru disarankan
agar menggunakan Participation Point System sebagai tehnik untuk pengajaran
berbagai aspek dalam bahasa Inggris. Sedangkan, bagi peneliti lainnya, mereka
disarankan agar mengeksplor fitur lain di dalamnya.
