COMMUNION AT TRINITY

We invite baptized Christians who acknowledge their sinfulness, trust in Christ as their Savior and recognize the real presence of Christ’s Body and Blood in the bread and wine for the forgiveness of their sins to join us at the Communion table. For those unable to drink wine, white grape juice is available in the center of each tray. Gluten-free bread is also available; please ask a pastor or elder. Those who choose not to commune may come forward and signal their desire to receive a prayer of blessing by crossing their hands over their heart. If you would like to receive Communion and are unable to come forward, please notify the Elder on duty or Pastor Buss before service begins. Communion is celebrated every week at 8:00 and Monday night and at the 10:30 service on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays.

Today we are celebrating The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

August 31, 2014 Hymn of Invocation: “Onward, Christian Soldiers” – 8am Hymnal 662 “Shine, Jesus, Shine” – 10:30am Lyrics on Screen P astor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C ongregation: Amen. Matthew 28:19b; [18:20]

Baptism of Ada Polzin – 10:30am

(Post baptism, when prompted) C In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an

heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus’ name as our brother in Christ that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. Amen.

Confessions and Absolution P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our

Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

[Hebrews 10:22]

P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8

P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin Psalm 32:5 P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever

offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23]

C Amen.

Prayer of the Day

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you. P Let us pray. C Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our

redemption. Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Kyrie Hymnal 186

Mark 10:47

The Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 15:15-21 Pew Bible pg. 643 15O LORD, you know;

remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors.

In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach.

16Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart,

for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts.

17I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice;

I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation.

Praise, Love, Grow, Share Verse of the Month “And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 22:39

18Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed?

Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?

19Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, I will restore you,

and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,

you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you,

but you shall not turn to them. 20And I will make you to this people

a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you,

but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you

to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD. 21I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,

and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The Second Reading: Romans 12:9-21 Pew Bible pg. 948 9Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. 17Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel P The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the sixteenth chapter, C Glory to You, O Lord.

The Holy Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28 Pew Bible pg. 822 21From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many

things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? 27For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. (Please be seated. All children are welcome to come forward at this time. Parents are welcome also).

Service of the Sacrament Preface P The Lord be with you.

C And with thy spirit. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them up unto the Lord. P Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. C It is meet and right so to do. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You,

holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared, proclaiming Him the promised Messiah, the very Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and calling sinners to repentance that they might escape from the wrath to be revealed when He comes again in glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:
