The Trumpet Newsletter of Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God’s Power Real for the East Mountains.” Issue 111 July 2013 A Time to be Silent – Ecclesiastes 3:7 Last month I received a book in the mail from my mom called Hiking Through written by Paul Stutzman. Mom bought each family member a copy in memory of my sister, Lori, who enjoyed hiking and lived near the Appalachian Trail. It’s a story of a guy who walked the entire AT following the loss of his wife from cancer. It’s not too often that I find a book that really captivates me, but this restaurant manager turned storyteller kept my attention as he endured an incredible 2,176 mile journey through the AT wilderness. Here is an excerpt from his book that I found interesting and thought you might enjoy. “Every day, it seemed that God revealed more of Himself to me. Perhaps it was because I wanted to hear. Several days before, I had been following a young man on the trail. When I was within speaking distance, I attempted a conversation with him, but was ignored. I realized that he had ear-buds in and was focused on his music. That earpiece was like putting up a “Do Not Disturb” sign. This ear- plugged hiker shut out not only all conversation with fellow humans, but also all the sounds of nature. He could not hear the singing birds or the whispering pines. Apparently he could not even hear the approaching thunder. This young hiker had a hiking partner a short distance in front of him. The unplugged hiker hearing the thunder and seeing the storm left the trail to find shelter at a country church down the road. This friend yelled out to the younger hiker, but with his head down, focused on his music, he didn’t hear the cries of his friend nor the thunder of the approaching storm. Soon he was soaked by the rain and separated from his partner. Though I watched with amusement as this little scene played out , I felt an inner nudge that said, “That’s you, you know.” And I got it. I saw myself in church on Sunday mornings hoping to hear from God but letting so many worries and distractions clog my mind that I never could hear Him, even when He stood there calling my name. Well I hope you enjoyed that little insight from Paul Stutzman. If you are the “wilderness type,” I definitely recommend this book; and even if you aren’t, I think you might still enjoy it. Either way, if you read about this adventure you might find yourself walking in Stutzman’s shoes and experiencing “A Time to be Silent” as well. A Time to be Silent – Ecclesiastes 3:7

Africa Mission Trip In September, John Rech and John and Julia Beach will visit the Lord's Mountain Orphanage in Zambia, and Mountainside is going to send with them socks and underwear for the children who live there. Beginning this Sunday, June 30, there will be giving slips on the Missions bulletin board outside the sanctuary. If you would like to provide a child at the orphanage with socks and underwear, you can pick a slip, which will have the child's name and sizes on it. Please leave your name and phone number next to the child's name, and plan to have the items at the church by the end of July. An auction will also be held on August 18 at 5:30, to raise additional support for the trip and the orphanage. Thanks for your support and prayers!

Annual Youth Yard Sale The Youth made close to $600 for their Mission Fund. Thank you for everyone that donated items and everyone that came out to support us and bought new treasures. Thank you so much for all the youth and many helpers that came out and helped set up the night before and spent hours the next day helping the Youth to sell everything. I know they are extremely grateful to all the volunteers that we have that helps us! I also heard that many people including our volunteers, liked having the yard sale inside this year. Hopefully in years to come it will be just as successful. Thank you

everyone! Our very own Salt and Pepper...I mean Kaeli and Alex helping to sell some clothes.

The youth are sponsoring a Pool Party at Bob and Janet VanAllen's house, 9613 Desert Mountain Rd NE, on June 27th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. We will have be having a barbeque with burgers and hot dogs. Youth-Adult Summer Mission Trip

We will be at McCurdy Charter School, from July 7- 12, Sunday thru Friday to help with their United Methodist affiliated, McCurdy Ministries. The school is located in Espanola, N.M, 90 min. north of Albuquerque. We will stay in dorm-like accommodations and our jobs may include painting, construction, cleaning of classrooms and teacher houses, yard work, and preparing meals! We will have 2 afternoons to explore the area. Youth must have finished 6th grade and accepts ages all the way to 12th grade. Adults and youth from three other United Methodist church groups will also share the work that week. You can sign up on the missions bulletin board. We need male and female chaperones! For more info, contact Anne Merkley at (505)401-5345. I also have a plea for a MALE CHAPERONE! Any guy interested please let Anne or I know. Thank you!

Youth Mission at Saranam Last the week we had an alternative Youth Mission at Saranam. It is a two-year housing program for homeless parents and their children. For those two years you get an education and get back on your feet. One of the things that Sue Campbell, the Saranam director, told us was that, "Just because they are homeless doesn't mean that they deserve the worst." It made an excellent point to our youth that there will be

people in the world that will not be as fortunate as them and they have to always help if possible. Thank you for everyone that came and helped this incredible mission!

This is all our helpers (minus John & I) for our Alternative Youth Mission helping Saranam.
