Today’s Readings First Reading — I saw one like a Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven (Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14). Psalm — The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading — Be attentive to the prophetic message, as to a lamp shining in a dark place (2 Peter 1:16-19). Gospel — Jesus was transfigured, and his clothes became white as light (Matthew 17:1-9).

VOTIVE CANDLES
First of all, I would like to say thank you, to all who light up our church with votive candles and prayers! A votive candle is an offering made to God through the intercession of the Saints and it helps add beauty and a sense of awe to our St. Joseph church. Again, I thank all of you who prayerfully make these votive offerings and are "lighting up" our church with your prayers. However, despite posted signs, announcements, bulletin and hand out notifications asking people not to bring "outside" candles into our church, we still have one or two folks who insist on purchasing candles from secular means and lighting them in our church instead of make a proper "offering." A candle donation for a parish is an "offering" which is much different from a secular purchase. And importantly, candles not obtained directly from St. Joseph the Worker Church are strictly forbidden due to church insurance policies - they are a potential danger to us, and they make a mess. For these reasons, all outside candles brought into the church will be removed and thrown away at the conclusion of each Mass or church service. Thank you, for your understanding. Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

Second Collection Our second collection this Sunday is to help purchase courtyard hospitality equipment such as lighting, BBQ grills, serving tables, etc. Our courtyard is starting to take shape and looks great with our new patio furniture and umbrellas. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and inva-sions swept through. Not much of Rome’s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city’s only glory. The Romans wanted “good order” not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
EYEWITNESSES
Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this mes-sage from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my be-loved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “altogether reliable” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Official Pilgrimage Site for the Fatima Centennial
Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th anniver-
sary of the Fatima apparitions throughout the centennial year, which concludes on No-
vember 26, 2017. Bishop Michael Barber has designated St. Joseph the Worker as the
official Oakland Diocese’s pilgrimage site for visits, and the granting of the special in-
dulgence.
St. Joseph the Worker is blessed to have a beautiful Lady of Fatima wood carved statue direct from Fatima, Portugal.

Cuando los amantes están juntos, ellos gastan horas y horas repitiendo la misma cosa: ¡‘Te amo! ’Lo que falla en la gente que piensa que el rosario monótono es el Amor; y todo que no es hecho para el amor es sin valor.'

Velas Votivas Primeramente, me gustaría dar las gracias a todos los que iluminan nuestra iglesia con velas votivas y oraciones! Una vela votiva es una ofrenda hecha a Dios por intercesión de los santos y ayuda a añadir belleza y un sentido de temor a nues-tra iglesia de San José. Nuevamente, les doy gracias a todos ustedes que en oración hacen estas ofrendas votivas y están 'iluminando' nuestra iglesia con sus oraciones. Sin embargo, a pesar de las notas publicadas, de los anunci-antes, del boletín y de las notificaciones de mano que piden a la gente que no lleven velas 'al aire libre' a nuestra iglesia, todavía tenemos una o dos personas que insisten en comprar velas de los medios seculares e iluminarlas en nuestra iglesia en vez de hacerlas una 'ofrenda' apropiada. Una donación de velas para una parroquia es una 'ofrenda' que es muy diferente de una compra secular. Y lo que es más importante, las velas que no se obtienen directamente de San Jose Obrero están estrictamente pro-hibidas debido a las pólizas de seguro de la iglesia - son un peligro potencial para nosotros, y hacen un lío. Por estas razones, todas las velas externas traídas a la iglesia serán removidas y tiradas al final de cada Misa o servicio religioso. Gracias por su comprensión. P. Kenneth Nobrega

TESTIGOS Hoy, la fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor, es día de testimonios de testigo ocular. El primero, una visión que el profeta Daniel reporta, era muy conocido por Jesús y sus apóstoles. Es una poderosa y memorable visión del cielo. Tie-ne llamaradas de fuego, ruedas encendidas, el sabio anciano y el Hijo del Hombre. Es claro que Daniel vio algo. Pero, ¿fue
un sueño? ¿Fue algo real? ¿O fue solamente un mito astu-to? ¡Pedro no quiere que su visión sea confundida de igual manera! Nos cuenta el Evangelio de san Marcos lo que él y sus amigos Santiago y Juan vieron cuando subieron un día a la montaña con Jesús. Jesús les ordenó a los tres testigos que no dijeran nada hasta que “el Hijo del Hombre resucitara de entre los muertos” (Marcos 9:9). Por si los lectores del Evan-gelio dan por descontada la historia o simplemente la descar-tan como un mito piadoso, Pedro escribe su propia versión de la Transfiguración de Jesús en su segunda carta a la Iglesia. Escribe con autoridad, como testigo ocular. Reporta este men-saje de Dios referente a Jesús: “Este es mi Hijo muy querido, al que miro con cariño”, y nos asegura que el mensaje es digno de “creer(se) firmemente”. Copyright © J. S. Nuestras Confesiones del miércoles normales y Hora Santa no estarán disponibles esta semana el miércoles, 9 de agosto. El grupo de oración de devoción al Rosario no se reunirá tampoco.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Esta semana celebramos la memoria del santo patrono de los cocineros, san Lorenzo. Este español del siglo tercero fue uno de siete diáconos del Papa Sixto II, en Roma. Su ministe-rio consistía en repartir limosnas a los pobres. En el año 257 se pronunció una nueva persecución a los cristianos en Roma y el día 6 de agosto unos soldados roma-nos asesinaron al Papa y a cuatro de sus diáconos. Lorenzo, cuyo nombre significa laureado o premiado, fue arrestado tras la batalla y llevado ante el alcalde de Roma. Este mandó traer todas las riquezas de la Iglesia, pero Lorenzo ya hacía tiempo que las había vendido para dar el dinero a los más necesita-dos. No obstante, se marchó de la presencia del alcalde para luego llegar con él, acompañado de gente pobre y enferma, insistiendo que ellos eran las verdaderas riquezas de la Iglesia. El alcalde, furioso, lo mandó quemar sobre brazas para que muriera lentamente. Según testigos de su martirio, Lorenzo, a cierto punto dijo a sus asesinos: “Ya estoy asado de este lado, voltéenme para asarme por completo”. peregrinación de la Diócesis de Oakland para el Centenario de Fátima.
El Papa Francis ha concedido una oportunidad de indulgencia plenaria para el
centenario de las apariciones de Fátima a lo largo del año centenario, que concluye el
26 de noviembre de 2017. Bishop Michael Barber ha designado a San José Obrero
como el sitio oficial de peregrinación de la Diócesis de Oakland para visitas, y la
concesión de la indulgencia especial.

“Getting to Know Our Lady of Fatima–Part XIII” As we celebrate The Fatima Centennial at St. Joseph the Worker thru November 26, 2017, it helps for us to have a little background, and so for the next few months we will be getting to know our Lady of Fatima with some historical background and stories compiled by Fr. Joseph Previtali, a priest from the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and Adjunct Instructor of Dogmatics, St. Patrick’s Seminary, Menlo Park. Part XIII: In the July apparition, the children continued to be in-structed in their vocation as victim souls, offering reparation for the sins of the world. Our Lady instructed them:
“Make sacrifices for sinners, and say often, especially while making a sacrifice: O Jesus, this is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for offences committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” After teaching them this manner of offering sacrifices, she showed the three little children a vision of Hell, where the souls of unrepentant sinners go when they die. In this, she was teaching them the urgency of offering their sacrifices for the conversion of sinners who would otherwise fall into eternal damnation. Lucia relates the vision: “As Our Lady spoke these words she opened her hands once more, as had during the two previous months. The rays of light seemed to penetrate the earth, and we saw as it were a sea of fire. “Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now follow-ing back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilibrium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. (It must have been this sight which caused me to cry out, as people say they heard me do). “The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals, black and transparent like burning coals, terrified and as if to plead for succor, we looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. "Conociendo Nuestra Señora de Fátima – Parte XIII"
En la aparición de Julio, los niños continuaron a ser ins-truidos en su vocación como una alma víctima, ofreciendo reparación por los pecados del mundo. Nuestra Señora les instruyó: "Haced sacrificios por los pecadores, y decid muchas veces, especialmente mientras hacéis un sacrificio: Oh Jesús, esto es por amor a Ti, por la conversión de los pecadores y en reparación por los delitos cometidos contra el Inmaculado Corazón de María". Después de enseñarles esta manera de ofrecer sacrifi-cios, ella les mostró a los tres niños una visión del Infierno, donde van las almas de los pecadores no arrepentidos cuando ellos mueren. En esto, ella les estaba enseñando la urgencia de ofrecer sus sacrificios por la conversión de pecadores que de otra forma caerían en la condenación eterna. Lucía relata la visión: "Cuando Nuestra Señora pronunció estas palabras ella abrió las manos una vez más, como lo había hecho durante los dos meses anteriores. Los rayos de luz parecían penetrar la tierra, y nosotros vimos como un mar de fuego. En medio de este fuego se hallaban demonios y almas en forma humana, como brasas transparentes y quemadas, todo ennegrecido o bruñido en bronce, flotando sobre la conflagra-ción, ahora levantada en el aire por las llamas que emanaban de sí mismas junto con grandes nubes de humo, ahora siguiendo de espaldas a cada lado como chispas en grandes fuegos, sin peso ni equilibrio, entre gritos y gemidos de dolor y desesperación, que nos horrorizaban y nos hacían temblar de miedo. (Debe haber sido esta visión que me hizo gritar, como dicen las personas que me oyeron hacer). Los demonios podían distinguirse por su aterradora y repelente semejanza con animales espantosos y desconocidos, negros y transparentes como carbones encendidos, aterroriza-dos y como para pedir socorro, miramos a Nuestra Señora, que nos dijo, tan amable y tan tristemente: 'Has visto el infierno, donde van las almas de los pobres pecadores. Es para salvarlos que Dios quiere establecer en el mundo la devoción a mi Inmaculado Corazón.
