Pumpkinfest Demo was a Success! By Lord Aidan the Hostile

A great time was had by all at our demo at Pumpkin-fest on Saturday, October 9th. We had wonderful weather for a demo.

Reb Eleazar ha-Levi ran his games table, which is always a hit. Lady Lucrezia Spinelli was set up inside a pavilion displaying her silk painting. Eogan was running his forge. I was set up beside him do-ing pewter casting. Dona Sol la Cantor, along with Skyn, Wynd and Wyre, played a couple wonderful sets of period music.

Our fighting area was filled with armorial display from Herr Johann Lederer, while Lord Connor McPhaddin and Lady Morag Ingen Conchobar came up from Owlsherst to help marshal the combat. I joined in on the fighting along with Lord Mikael Thorkelson and Lord Connor.

Master Victor of Shrewsbury and Lady Elisabetta Tempesta from Owlsherst tested the patrons knowl-edge with the food game. We had a lot of people come by to check out our well rounded display of A&S and Martial Arts. We spent the day answering questions and showing everyone how much we love what we do.

Thank you all for coming out and help make our demo a success. Also, a special Thanks to our neighbors, who took the time to come and pitch in with the demo.

    Dear Seneschal: Ask Me Anything!

    By Pani Magdalena Gdanska

Q: I see the term Great Officers in the Blak Rose Bylaws. What does this mean?

That’s a good question! According to East Kingdom Law, one of the requirements for your group to officially be called a shire is that you must have certain officers. They are: Seneschal, Exchequer, Herald, and either a Knights Marshal OR a Minister/Mistress of Arts and Sciences.

While other officers, such as, chatelaine, chronicler, web minister, etc. are very important and contribute to the running of the shire, they are not required by Kingdom law. We are fortunate that we, in Blak Rose, have committed people in the offices of Chatelain, Chronicler, Web Minister, Archery Marshal, and others. I am grateful to them for all the hard work they do.

    Respectfully ,

    Pani Magdalena Gdanska

Bona was born into the princely family of Milan in 1494 (Italian sources give 1493) to Gian Galeazzo Sforza and Isabella of Aragon. The family name “Sforza” means “force” and was the nickname of the mercenary soldier Jacopo Attendolo. The family was originally members of the lesser gentry and gained Milan through their own efforts. After her fa-ther’s untimely death, Milan was taken over by her paternal uncle, Ludo-vico Moro. Her mother took her to the principality of Bari, which was given to Isabella the year before. It was here that Bona received a good education (part of which was in the art of ruling), which Bona put into practice since she had her own court at Bari.

Isabella’s ambition of retiring to her own principality of Milan was thwarted with the conquest of Milan by Francis I of France. Isabella began searching for a good suitor for her daughter without success. The search was then entrusted to her uncle, Maximillian I of Austria. Maxi-millian’s choice was the educated, cultured, eloquent, newly widowed, Sigismund I, also know as Sigimund the Old, of Poland. Sigismund was 24 years Bona’s senior, but he also ruled a country that was, at the time, the fifth or sixth largest in Europe.

While the Renaissance was winding down in Western Europe, it flour-ished again in the north, especially in Poland, due in part to Bona. Some items that show the Italian Renaissance influence are The Olbracht Tomb, Wawel Castle, and the Sigismund Chapel, to name a few.

Bona also had an influence on the food of Poland. She brought with her the Italians love of fruits and vegetables. The Poles were suspicious of salad since they were big meat eaters. They believed that a diet of so many vegetables, and in their eyes not enough meat, would make you weak. And the Italians felt the Polish diet of meat was unhealthy. Some food items that became part of the Polish language are: torta (It), tort (P), limone (It), limonia (P), melone (It), melon (P), lasagna (It), Lzanki (P), to name a few.

Queen Bona succeeded in bringing two distant and seemingly different countries close together. In the words of the poet, and her compatriot, Gianbattista Garini, “The places are so far away but the spirit is close.”

Check out a Polish recipe created for Queen Bona below!

Mizeria - Cucumber Salad Submitted by Pani Magdalena Gdanska

Mizeria is Polish, from the Latin Miseria, Misery. This recipe is attributed to Queen Bona and reputed to be called Mizeria because she missed her homeland of Italy so much.

Peel young cucumbers with small seeds. Cucumbers can either be shredded or thinly sliced. Sprinkle with a teaspoon of salt and squeeze out lightly after a few minutes. This is known as “sweating” the cucum-bers. If you skip this step, you will end up with a very watery salad. You can, at this point, rinse with water to remove any remaining salt but be sure to drain well!

Dressing - for each 1/2 cup of sour cream you use, add the juice of 1/2 a lemon, 1/2 tsp sugar, and if neces-sary, a little salt. Add a copious teaspoon of finely minced dill (weed). Dust the Mizeria with 1/4 tsp ground pepper. Mix and place in a cool place half an hour before serving.

Recipes from Vinland Games 2010 Submitted by Ketterlyn de Wilde

Poached Salmon (First Course) 1-1/4 lb. salmon fillet 1/2 cup water

1/4 tsp. onion powder 1TBSP lemon juice

1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup apple juice

fresh herbs: chives, celery and bay leaf

    Directions:

    1. Lay salmon in crockpot skin side down. Sprinkle chives, celery and bay leaf beside salmon. Stir remaining ingredients together in a bowl. Pour over salmon.

    2. Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Cook until salmon flakes with a fork.

    3. Discard bay leaf before serving.

Bacon & Mushroom Au Gratin (3rd Course) 1 1/4 lb. bacon cubed

    2/3 lb. mushrooms sliced

    5 tbsp butter

    2 1/2 tbsp cornstarch

    1 1/4 cup milk

    1 1/4 cup light cream

    20 eggs

    Shredded cheese of your choice

    Directions:

Melt butter in a frying pan, add bacon and fry until golden and crispy. Remove bacon from pan and drain. In the same oil, simmer sliced mush-rooms for 3 or 4 minutes. Once softened, sprinkle with cornstarch, add milk and cream. When this is well mixed, beat the eggs in a bowl and add the eggs to the mushrooms. Simmer stirring constantly, to make a scram-bled egg mix. When the eggs are half cooked, transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Add the bacon and cover with the shredded cheese. Bake in a 325 degree oven until cheese is melted.

It is recommended to make the scrambled egg mixture the night before, so the flavors have a chance to develop. Cook in the oven moments before serving.

Baked Strawberries (4th Course) 2 - 16oz bags of frozen strawberries 1 tbsp flour

2 sticks butter, melted 1 tbsp sugar

1 cup flour 9x13 baking dish

    1 cup sugar

    Directions:

Mix melted butter, flour, and sugar together; pat into the bottom of the baking dish. Place whole strawberries stem side down to fill the baking dish on one layer. Mix flour and sugar together; sift over strawberries. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 30-45 minutes or until strawberries are soft and crust is bubbly.

On May 8, 2010, the Shire of Blak Rose held the event, Vinland Games, at H.M. Levitz Memorial Park in Grantville, PA. Our Autocrat, Friderich Swartzwalder, ran a very successful event. Vivat and Thanks Friderich! Our Head Cook, Ketterlyn de Wilde, planned a fantastic Day Board and 2 Feasts for this event. In addition to the main Feast menu, she planned a spectacular and scrumptious Odin’s Table Feast, which

was fit for a King. Odin’s Table was a silent auction fundraiser for the shire, which allowed 8 guests to sit at the high table. Those winners were privileged to a feast with salmon, venison, pheasant, numerous vegetables dishes and baked strawberries. Vivat

and many thanks to Ketterlyn for a job well done.

The following recipes are selections from the Feast at Odin’s Table. More recipes will be published in issues of 2011. You’ll want to come back for more, I promise.

    Yours in Service,

    Lady Lucrezia Spinelli
