Blessing of the Animals

Saturday, October 3, 3:00 p.m.

In honor of St. Francis, Christ the King will host a brief

service of blessing for animals. Weather permitting, we

will gather outside to greet and celebrate these very spe-

cial lives. A reception will follow with treats for both

two-legged and four-legged creatures.

Vestry Coffee and Conversation

Sunday, October 4, 8:45 and 11:00 a.m.

The Vestry initiated regular Coffee and Conversations about 18 months ago, as a

way to enhance communication with the congregation. After several months off

for the summer, there are a number of topics for us to catch up on—and some new

items to consider. We look forward to seeing you.

Welcome to Meals on Wheels and Brownie Troop #1670

Part of our service to the community is offering the use of our building to outside

groups that provide a particular service. We are pleased to announce that two new

groups have requested to use our space; fortunately, we have that space available.

On Wednesday, September 16, Brownie Troop #1670 held its first meeting here,

and they will meet twice a month on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Beginning October 1, the Meals on Wheels program will be serving about 70 resi-

dents in our area for the next three months while the Arvada United Methodist

Church, their usual “home,” undergoes some renovations. Meals on Wheels vol-

unteers will be here at Christ the King from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., Monday through

Friday.

Healing Service

Sunday, October 18

The practice of anointing with oil is an ancient rite of the church, dating back to

the earliest apostles. For many years, Christ the King had a team of people who

prayed for healing, both during special healing services and following the service

on Sundays.

Tradition has it St. Luke was a physician, and October 18 is the Feast Day of St.

Luke. This year, we will offer the laying on of hands and anointing as part of our

services on October 18. If you have interest in being a part of a healing ministry,

please contact Rev. Becky (303-424-5288; [email protected].)

“Growing into Christ”

Stewardship Program for 2016

This year, the Vestry will be overseeing the Stewardship program. At their retreat in Sep-

tember, after reflecting on what it means to be a healthy church, this particular passage

from Ephesians seemed to summarize much of what was said:

“But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him

who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit to-

gether by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working prop-

erly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.”

Ephesians 4:15-16

It was from this text that we chose our theme: “Growing into Christ.”

Much of our program will be familiar from years past. We are inviting speakers to share

their experiences of how Christ the King has helped them to grow into Christ. We invite

and encourage you to reflect on your own experiences as well as you prayerfully consider

your support for our congregation in 2016. Pledge cards may be completed and turned in

at any time, but we do ask that you turn in your pledge by Sunday, November 8. Each

week, we will announce the total number and amount of the commitments made. Thank

you for your continuing support for the ministry of Christ the King.

Clergy Letter Dear People of God,

As I write this column tonight, the Worshiping Voices Choir is rehearsing and I can hear

the music as it carries down the hallway. And it occurs to me that I have missed these

sounds over the past several months.

As we resume our “regular” schedule in September, including choir rehearsals and church

school and occasional evening prayer services, I can sense the change in the energy

among us. It’s great to have the choir singing again on Sundays, but the change is broader

and deeper than just Sunday mornings. As so many reconnect with our faith community

after the summer, there are a lot of other changes that begin to happen as well.

But while part of our life is beginning again, other parts are ending. First and foremost, of

course, Edie Ferris will be retiring at the end of November. Edie has served as Church

Secretary, Parish Administrator, and Financial Secretary during her 45 year tenure, and

has seen the church grow and change a lot during this time. While this ending has been

on the horizon for some time, it is still a surprise that it is happening now.

Fortunately, Edie is able to offer us significant help during this time of transition. Since

July, Amy McClure has been helping Bob DeLong keep up with the day-to-day transac-

tions in our office; this month, Amy and Edie have already begun working together to

document the procedures and processes that have kept the financial part of our community

operating so smoothly. Even so, I’m sure we’ll be calling her to answer questions long

after her official retirement date. We will all have an opportunity to thank Edie for her

service on Sunday, November 22, when we celebrate Christ the King Day.

Along with Edie’s departure, Paul Ferris will be “retiring” as well. Paul has provided

Christ the King with IT services for many years, helping us to keep our network and com-

puter systems up and running. Paul will also be assisting us as we bring in a new person

to help us maintain and improve this critical tool for our office staff and parish communications. We thank Paul for all of

his time and efforts on our behalf.

We also are welcoming two new community groups this month who have asked to use our space. On the first, third, and

fifth Wednesdays, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Brownie Troop #1670 will be meeting here, bringing their youthful energy and

enthusiasm into Kempsell Hall. Until Cub Scout Pack #167 disbanded last year, CTK had hosted Girl Scout and Boy

Scout troops for most of its history, and it’s great to resume this part of our outreach ministry.

Beginning the October 1, Christ the King will be the temporary home of the Arvada Meals on Wheels distribution site.

While Arvada United Methodist Church undergoes some renovations, the volunteers from Meals on Wheels will be here

from 9:00 – 11:00 each weekday morning, packing and distributing meals to 70 members of the Arvada community.

I have always sensed something very promising about this time of year, and I hope you will be with us as we discover how

the Spirit is at work among us.

In God’s peace,

Becky+

Open Plate Offering for October

Turkey Shoot

CTK’s October Open Offering will be directed toward our November Outreach project, our annual Turkey Shoot. We have

promised the chaplain of the Jefferson County Jail that we will provide 50 turkey dinner boxes for families of jail inmates,

as we do each year. We may also provide a few for families at Peck Elementary. By collecting the money a month ahead

(instead of waiting for the November Open Offering, as we used to do), we have more time to shop the specials as they be-

come available in grocery stores. We will be packing up turkey dinner boxes on Saturday, Nov. 21, and the Outreach Team

is delighted if you can provide a frozen turkey and/or the other items for a Thanksgiving Dinner, but for those who find it

difficult to shop, we will do the purchasing with the money raised in the October Open Offering. When the announcement

about the Thanksgiving Dinner needs appears in the Sunday bulletin in mid-October, the Outreach Team would very much

appreciate knowing who intends to bring food on Nov 21, so we can efficiently plan how much we need to buy. Thank you

so much for whatever way you plan to support this Thanksgiving project!

St. Clare’s Table – Tuesday, October, 5:30—6:30 p.m.

Each month, the Church of Christ the King prepares and serves dinner for about 100 people. If you would like to help cook,

serve, or clean up, please contact Mark Molello ([email protected]; 720-284-7563).

Stephen’s Ministry

Because you may know of a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or relative who is going through a difficult time and could benefit

from the focused care, encouragement, and support of a Stephen Minister. If you know of someone who is hurting, talk with

one of our Stephen Leaders: Chelli McGaughey, Audrey Blair, or Lou Blair. They can talk with you about how we can con-

nect the person you know with one of our Stephen Ministers. It's a great way for you to show how much you care!

Cathy Donahoe Update

Dear Partners in Mission,

My church is called Church of the Holy Cross and September 14th is our

feast day. The local Episcopal school celebrated their 95th anniversary

that day! The celebration began with a standing room only Eucharist for

students, teachers, parents, alumni and church members, incorporating

the students throughout the service. The talent of a young saxophonist

and several percussionists joined with our regular keyboardist. Certainly

God’s blessings on this school over the years warrant heartfelt thanksgiv-

ing by all affected!

The Episcopal Church here has a strong interest in education, running

almost 30 schools around the country. This has made up for some of the

deficits in the public schools over the years, but recently the government

has started focusing more on education. New schools have cropped up all

over the country accompanied by a significant increase in teachers being hired. Families are also subsidized monthly for

some normal family expenses, by enrolling their children in the public school. Although I see these changes overall as

very positive for the country, for private schools it is a huge challenge. For this school to continue to function in the for-

mation of the children of Santa Fe, changes are necessary. Please pray for God’s guidance for the administration of this

very special school as they discern how best to face these challenges! I give thanks to God for your support which has

been helping 4 students through scholarships over the years.

In Christ,

Cathy

September Vestry Highlights

Reports received:

Bob DeLong reported that income for August was better than anticipated and overall year-to-date is also better than

budgeted. Revenue is up because parishioners are keeping up with their pledges and giving more.

Kama Linscome reported that she, Diane Mickelson, and Lori Molello will host a “Christmas Tea” fundraiser on Sat-

urday, December 12. Kama is currently making cozies for the teapots she has been collecting for the tea.

Actions taken:

Approved a grant application to the Front Range Region for funding for The Way. Money will be used for dinners.

Becky will submit the paperwork by October 13.

Approved the snow removal contract with Creative Landscape Artists for the 2015-2016 winter season. Rates have

gone up.

Boy Scout Pack 167 has asked if Christ the King would like their old materials or if they should clean them out. Sean

McGaughey has agreed to look through the items and email the vestry with an inventory.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 20th, 7:00 p.m.

Thank You’s

Christ the King Church has once again provided many

school supplies for our students and teachers. Each

year, their congregation comes together to donate sup-

plies and money to Peck Elementary. Everything we

receive is used for our students. We are very grateful

for their continuous generosity and support of our

school.

Thank you to all that have worked sprucing up the

church grounds. The tree trimming, flowers, and

mulch makes a huge improvement. Several

people have commented on how nice it is looking.
