President’s Column Since our last magazine I have experienced a short stay in hospital and am currently on a six week period of enforced inactivity. Even though winter seems to have finally arrived and normally spending time indoors on cold wintery days is something I look forward to – I have to confess that staying indoors and doing very little is wearing a little thin. But alas my Model A Ford project will still be there next month. I suppose that seeing how my twin brother started its strip down about forty years ago, a month or two’s delay won’t matter too much. On Mother’s Day I joined some of our members at a matinee performance of the Mary Poppins’ Stage Show at the Capitol Theatre. Michael Jeanes organised the theatre party for us, and my mother and I certainly appreciated the quality seats he secured. What a talented Musical Society we have in Tamworth. In fact we have decided to book into a few other shows in the theatre’s programme this year. At our June meeting we have asked that our people who are joining in the Winter Escape return their information form. This tour was designed so that our members could do as little or as much as they want to – so we really do need to know who is doing what so bookings can be finalised. On the first Saturday in June we organised a Blokes Afternoon. Alan Early has written this up so I really don’t need to say too much except to thank everyone who braved the ominous skies and rain to join us. I appreciate the effort that Andrew and Megan Campbell went to show off their projects along with Greg’s Vanguard Ute. I’ll have to book in with Andrew for some private tuition on metal fabrication. The progress Alan Early has made on his 1924 Dodge in the last year or so using not much more than a band saw, dolly or two, hammer, MIG welder (and Maree’s muscle from time to time), is to be admired. Neal’s badge and model collection is something I think we all connected with and admired. A special thanks to Beryl Casson for providing slices to have with our lunch time cuppa and Maree Early for afternoon tea. As an aside, I have been contacted by Denis Boyd (who is a former owner of the Exchange Hotel in Tenterfield.) Denis has a collection of badges and car memorabilia that he wants to sell. If interested, I can provide you with the details. Over the June long weekend some of our members will be participating in the North West Rally at Inverell. I am really looking forward to what appears to be a very well designed programme which includes Inverell’s famous Pioneer Village and National Transport Museum. Next year it is our club’s turn to host the North West Rally. I am pleased that Gwen Bridge has accepted to role of Rally Convenor. With Gwen’s extensive knowledge and experience I know we will do a great job – so please get behind Gwen when she asks for assistance. Our annual membership fees are due at the July Meeting. In keeping with the decision made last year, our fees have been increased to $40 for the next financial year. Just a reminder that members with HCRS vehicles are required to be current financial members at all times. In the next month we have a couple of exciting events and I do not mean the Federal election! However, on election night Karen and Ian Duprez are hosting a bonfire, soup and damper evening for our members at their home in Piallamore. My role is to purchase sparklers so that we can re-capture our youth and wave them around after dark. Your role is to join in the fun. The second event, which we have been invited to, is the Wean Picnic Races. This has a Gatsby Era theme so it is a chance to bring out your finery, assuming that you have some, and support the race committee. This year, the profits are being donated to the Westpac Helicopter in Tamworth. Peter Wright ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Our June meeting will be the last one attended by David and Val Fechney as they have sold their house and are moving back to New Zealand. They have been members since 2006, and quite active until recently when they did not re-register their cars pending their move. The red and silver 1929 Graham Paige was a standout vehicle and is going with them. Anyone that can single handedly turn this –

To this - is very talented. Thanks for your membership, happy motoring, and all the best wishes for the future.

APRIL MONTHLY RUN LOOKOUT / HALLSVILLE / MANILLA

Being an Anzac long weekend the numbers were down slightly with the following turning up for morning tea at the lookout: Michael C – Jag, Alan & Maree – Dodge, Carl & Beryl – Holden, Greg – Vanguard, Brian & Lyn – Mustang. Roly & Trish – Ford, Peter – Mercedes, Ian & Karen – Moke

And good to see Barry, Sharni and bub Lucas. Barry’s green Ford can be seen in the back ground. The scorched grass shows the extent of the long dry spell. The old Dodge beat Roly up to the lookout, mainly because of the narrow road which was lined with joggers. But he was too quick out to the Hallsville markets and bought the last of the walnut cakes. Then on to Manilla weir where we found a delightful spot for us to have a picnic under a gum tree alongside the river.

Good to have Lyn and Kevin and the boys Harry and Noah join us with Carl keeping an eye on the Woolies bag:

And we finally got to see some models sporting our Clubs new hats…

…although this pair look like a cross between the Gestapo and the SS! The document Ian is holding in the photo is ‘Peter’s Humber Journey’ which proved a very interesting article on the history of his Humber Super Snipe from when he bought it in 1987 up to the present date. A short run but very enjoyable, and we finally got to welcome some slightly cooler weather compared to the run of scorchers we have previously endured.

MAY PIE RUN TO WERRIS CREEK 5 MAY 2016

Although we have been here before for several Pie Runs, the Werris Creek Pharmacy remains popular as evidenced by 22 people turning up in 13 vehicles. We get well looked after with chairs and tables set up for us on the footpath:

It really is a delightful spot especially on a sunny day with clear skies, and the outlook over the park and historic railway station opposite provide a nice ambience:

A few more of the new Club shirts are now getting about and this would have proved a good opportunity to test them for their resilience to pie or gravy or tomato sauce or gelato, but alas, everyone was well behaved with no spills. Good to have Jim and Brenda Collins join us who are John & Marilyn Smiths friends from Canada. Jim and Brenda have 3 Model A’s back in central Canada where it is known to get a bit chilly in winter – like minus 40 degrees. They have some interesting stories such as the big machinery where they keep the engines running 24 hours in winter because if they switch them off it is extremely difficult to get them started again. John & Marilyn had their A Model and other participants were: Carl & Beryl – Holden, Michael J – Pontiac, Michael C – Jag, Peter – Mercedes, Brian & Heather – Holden, Alan & Maree – Dodge, John – Holden, Lance & Kerrie – Celica and in moderns

were Barry & Margaret, Mick & Sandra, and Gwen & Marilyn. ********

QUIRINDI RURAL MUSEUM DAY

Peter in the Rover, Carl & Beryl in their Holden and Alan & Maree in the Dodge ventured off to Quirindi and saw this interesting bit of work at the start of the street procession:

It is registered as a Ford and the tiller steering gives it the appearance of something out of the late 1800’s. But its got a Briggs & Stratton engine which they didn’t start producing until the 1950’s, and it has an open diff on one rear axle and a disc brake on the other axel. Got a Ford badge, so there you go! The Quirindi Rural Museum event is held over the 2 day weekend and it was lucky we went on the Saturday as the Sunday was washed out. Pity, as it is an interesting outing with old tractors, trucks, machinery plus swap and stalls and band and miniature and model railways. Saturday was well attended with a large number of historic cars from various clubs. NATIONAL MOTORING HERITAGE DAY –

15 MAY 2016 Shannon’s Motor Show at the TREC was staged to coincide with National Heritage Motoring Day and our Club had 4 vehicles on display. Phil Orman and the family had the Mustang outside which was joined by Alan Early’s Dodge, whilst inside were Paul Boyd’s 2 Chevs being the 1966 Impala and 1930 Universal.

Page 8: The Tamworth Sparktamworthvintagecarclub.com.au/images/Downloads/tts-june2016.pdf · Official Newsletter of the Tamworth Vintage Car Club 2016 Greg and Margaret Campbell’s 1950

The Tamworth Spark Page 8

Tamworth Antique had a number of vehicles on display and there were also vehicles from other clubs including Armidale. Overall it appeared the number of vehicles was down on previous years. Although heritage vehicles are an important feature of the show, they are intermingled with a broad cross section of other vehicles such as bikes, trucks, tractors, hot rods, sports cars and new vehicles. That prompts me to suggest that it might be a good time to consider whether we want to achieve a better focus on heritage vehicles for National Motoring Heritage Day. The Motor Show provides a convenient forum to display vehicles and it could be possible to segregate the heritage vehicles from other vehicles somewhere within the venue; or we could do something separate as an individual club; or do something in conjunction with other heritage clubs. There are quite a few possibilities and your thoughts would be welcome, but I think we need to provide a better focus on heritage vehicles on National Motoring Heritage Day.

MAY MONTHLY RUN BIGGEST MORNING TEA AND BENDEMEER WITH TDAMC

The endless summer continues with another glorious sunny day for us to join up with Tamworth & District Antique Motor Club for The Biggest Morning Tea. This was a charity event held at the Truck Stop Memorial on Goonoo Goonoo Road, and was associated with cancer fund raising.

29 people from our Club met with about an equal number from Tamworth District so it was a good turnout:

Food was plentiful:

It was for a worthy cause and the donation box got a good workout with people giving quite generously. The day was topped off with a run to Bendemeer for lunch. It is good to have some nice casual social inter action between the Clubs, especially for such a worthwhile cause. Perhaps we should think about doing something similar for National Motoring Heritage Day.

The combined event produced a range of vehicles including these 2 old faithfuls:

Left is TDAMC Gary & Val Grout’s EH Holden, and right is Carl & Beryl Casson’s HQ Holden. Two good examples of cars that are regularly used. Participating from TVCC were: Arthur, Kay, Carl & Anna – Singer, Michael J – Pontiac, Terry & Lyn – Holden, Alan & Maree – Dodge, Roly & Trish – modern, John & Leanne – Commodore, Michael C – Jag, Carl & Beryl – Holden, Peter – Humber, Kevin & Lyn – Falcon, Ian & Karen – Moke, Brian, Lyn, Phil & Michelle – Chev, Greg & Margaret – Vanguard, Brian & Heather – modern. PIE RUN – CAFÉ KOOT-IN-GAL DINER 2nd JUNE

This photo indicates the diversity within the club, British, German, American and Australian Lining up for our monthly pie run were Michael Jeanes (Rover); John Stacy & Leanne Craswell (Commodore); Lance & Kerry Davies (Modern);

Arthur Ramsey (Hillman); Carl & Beryl Casson (Holden HQ); Peter Wright (Mercedes); Michael Crawley & Mary (Jaguar); Paul Boyd (Chev 57) and Roly & Trish Morgan (Ford). A few of our regulars had other engagements, never-the-less those of attended enjoyed the usual hospitality at the café. There was a little competition between Michael Jeanes and Peter Wright to see who would experience the full Alan Early effect (ie. being the last to be served) in his absence. Although a close run competition, Michael J took out the prize on this occasion but as a consolation Peter ended up with two lunches!

A sunny day, good friends and the anticipation of good food – another successful day out. **************************************

As Retired Lieutenant Commander Andrew Craig was driving his old car down the motorway, his mobile phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, 'Andrew, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on the M275. Please be careful!'

'Botheration, 'said Andrew, 'It’s not just one car. Its hundreds of them!'

Feature Article

Greg and Margaret Campbell’s 1950 Standard Vanguard Phase 1

General: The Standard Vanguard Phase 1was a car produced by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry from 1947 to 1952, when it was replaced by the updated Phase 1A.The Phase 1 was announced in July 1947, was completely new, with no resemblance to the previous models, and was Standard's first post-Second World War car. It was also the first model to carry the new Standard badge, which was a heavily stylised representation of the wings of a griffin.

In the wake of the Second World War many potential customers in the UK and in English-speaking export markets had recently experienced several years of military or naval service, therefore a car name related to the British Navy carried a greater resonance than it would for later generations. The name of the Standard Vanguard recalled HMS Vanguard, the last of the British Navy's battleships, launched in 1944 amid much media attention, permission to use the name involved Standard in extensive negotiations with senior Royal Navy personnel.

The styling of the car resembled the pre-war Plymouth with a sloping "beetle-back", although the Russian media claimed that the styling of the Vanguard had been in part influenced by Russian GAZ-M20 Pobeda, which had been in development from 1943 and went into production in 1946. In 1952 The Motor magazine stated that the Soviet Pobeda "shows a certain exterior resemblance to the Standard Vanguard", disregarding the fact that the Pobeda had been launched a year before the Vanguard. Although it is often said the styling resembled a Plymouth, that car was not slab-sided like the Vanguard, and the style of the Russian car is nearer the mark. Walter Belgrove was responsible. Early cars had deep doors that blended into the bottom of the sills. The car used a conventional chassis on which was mounted the slab sided body. The chassis was later used by the Triumph 2000 roadster. Suspension was independent at the front with coil springs, and a live axle and leaf springs at the rear. Front and rear anti-roll bars were fitted. The brakes were hydraulic

with 9-inch (228 mm) drums all round, and to make the most of the interior space a column gear change was used. The same wet liner engine was used throughout the range until the advent of the Six model in 1960, and was an overhead-valve unit of 85 mm (3.3 in) bore and 92 mm (3.6 in) stroke with single Solex downdraught carburettor. The compression ratio was 6.7:1. Wet cylinder liners were fitted. The engine was essentially the same as that made by Standard for the Ferguson tractor, with some changes for automobile use.

At first, the transmission included a three-speed gearbox with synchromesh on all forward ratios, controlled using a column-mounted lever. The option of Laycock-de-Normanville overdrive was announced at the end of 1949 and became available a few months later, priced for UK buyers at slightly under £45 including purchase tax

Greg and Margaret’s car:

This particular car would have arrived in Australia as a fully built car, as part of Britain’s “Export or perish” post war recovery. It was initially sold in Parkes however eventually made its way to Goulburn, where Greg bought it. An interesting bit of trivia is that the initial 1947 production had the column mounted gear lever on the right of the column (perhaps in anticipation of LHD sales in America) which meant much banging of the knuckles on the door trim in RHD cars. Fortunately this was corrected and this car has the shifter on the left.

Page 11: The Tamworth Sparktamworthvintagecarclub.com.au/images/Downloads/tts-june2016.pdf · Official Newsletter of the Tamworth Vintage Car Club 2016 Greg and Margaret Campbell’s 1950

The Tamworth Spark Page 11

Since buying this rather brightly coloured car (investigation suggests that it was originally a deep shade of green, possibly metallic) Greg has had the brakes redone and the wheels blasted and powder coated. To these he has added rather stylish white walled tyres, resulting in a look that turns heads and draws comments at every outing.

The interior of the car has been reupholstered in two-tone grey, which combined with the lovely Bakelite switchgear gives a very pleasing interior

To simplify the fitting of a discretely positioned radio/CD player the electrical system has been changed from the British + ve earth system to the more common –ve earth. (thanks to the magic performed by Dr Cliff)

The motor and drive train have proven to be in quite good condition and with normal maintenance give every indication of continuing to provide good and faithful service.

As you can see, despite its “fastback” styling the boot is designed to separate tools etc from luggage thus allowing tyre changing without unpacking, something that is not often the case, then or now.

The very informative chassis plate also includes information about the various lubricants used in the car. Useful information in the days when regular maintenance was all part of motor car ownership

Page 12: The Tamworth Sparktamworthvintagecarclub.com.au/images/Downloads/tts-june2016.pdf · Official Newsletter of the Tamworth Vintage Car Club 2016 Greg and Margaret Campbell’s 1950

The Tamworth Spark Page 12

As you may know, Greg has a Phase III Vanguard utility under restoration at the moment. When this is finished, which will be quite soon, it is proposed to give this (increasingly rare) Phase I a make-over with a colour change to a more subdued, darker colour very much on the cards.

Greg has provided the following informationon his Phase I:

x 4 cylinder, 2088cc (127.6 cu in)

x The same engine as used in the “Grey Fergie”

x 68bhp at 4200 rpm

x 3 speed manual, column shift

x 13’10” (4.22m) long

x 5’9” (1.75m) wide

x 5’4” (1.63m) high

x 24cwt 3q 21lbs (1265kg) weight (with tools and fuel)

x 35’ (11m) turning circle

Elsie, an elderly lady, stopped to drive into a parking space when a young man in his brand new red BMW drove around her and parked in the space that she had been waiting for. Elsie was so angered that she approached the young fellow and enquired, through gritted teeth, 'I was about to park there.'

The man looked at her with disdain and replied, 'That's what you can do when you're young and bright.'

This annoyed Elsie even more, so she got back in her car, backed it up and then she stamped on the accelerator and rammed straight into his BMW.

The young man ran back to his car and shouted in a stunned voice, 'What did you do that for?'

Elsie smiled at him and said, 'That's what you can do when you're old and rich.'

And this is why Greg’s Vanguard should never be

left alone with Michael’s Jaguar!
