I first became a member in 2002,

joining the TTCA Board in 2010 as

one of the directors, and then

graduated to the position of 1st

Vice President in 2012, where I

have served until now. I acquired

my first TT in 2001 and have loved

the breed ever since. I bred my first

litter in 2005 and became a TTCA

Breeder of Merit in 2013. I have

met many of you when showing in

conformation and agility and look

forward to making new friends

throughout the TT world as I strive

to serve as best I can. I am feeling

a bit overwhelmed at the moment,

since I am also the 2017 TTCA

National Specialty Show Chair, but

I will do my best to fulfill my

responsibilities and work hard to

continue in the direction of those

who have served before me.

At this time I am turning to each of

you to provide me with your

thoughts on how to continue to

grow the TTCA and foster our

dedication to protecting our breed.

Just drop me an email at

[email protected] and I will do my

best to listen to each of you.

Personally, I hope to grow our

membership, because I know there

a many TT lovers out there who are

not currently members, in spite of

sharing our passion for the breed.

One way I hope to attract new

members is to ask breeders to invite

Looking ever-forward, the 2019

TTCA National Specialty is now on

the books. It is to be held at the

Boxboro Regency Hotel,

Boxborough, Massachusetts, May

30-31, 2019 at the same site as the

2015 TTCA National Specialty.

Our newsletter will continue to

share details as information

becomes available.

For those of you lucky enough to

have shown at Westminster this

year, congratulations! It was a

beautiful line up! Also a sincere

THANK YOU needs to go out to

Travis Brock and all those who

helped and supported our presence

at the American Kennel Club

their new puppy owners to

participate in this year’s Tibetan

Terrier Companion Celebration,

which will take place during this

year’s TTCA National Specialty

on Tuesday afternoon, May 30.

It is meant to be a fun and social

event for all. (Please see the flyer

on page 14 in this newsletter).

We also would like Tibetan

Terrier breeders to encourage

their new puppy and dog owners

to join the TTCA. Another goal,

which is already on the docket, is

to continue to support to honor

performance TTs. Claire

Coppola has been working with

Mary Martin to develop a new

TTCA Versatility Award in the

performance arena. We will

share more on this new venture

as it develops.

More exciting news is about the

2018 TTCA National Specialty at

Purina Farms, Gray Summit,

Missouri, which is scheduled to

run April 30 – May 2, 2018. Its

committees are coming together

to make a great show! The

TTCA National Specialty

Futurity Judge for 2018 will be

Andrea Reiman. To support the

2018 show, be sure to attend the

TTCA Auction Fundraiser on

Wednesday May 31, 2017 at this

year’s TTCA National Specialty.

For 2019, TTCA members have

elected Mark Kennedy to be our

conformation Judge.

On a sadder note the TT world has lost two more

dedicated Tibetan Terrier people: Pat Malloy

and Chris Friemel, mother of TTCA member

Cassandra Basgall. Though Pat was not a club

member, she believed in our rescue program and

many who knew her have expressed making a

donation to Tibetan Terrier Rescue in her

memory. Both will be missed by those who

knew and cared for them.

Again, I welcome input from all members and

hope to see many of you this year at our TTCA

National Specialty at the Peek’n Peak Resort,

May 29 – June 2, 2017. The show will offer

multiple performance venues, including:

obedience, rally and agility and testing for AKC

Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog

International titles; TTCA Futurity classes; a 4-

6-month puppy class; a breeders class; a special event

for pet owners; a two-part educational program

featuring Dr. Cassandra Guarino of Cornell University

speaking on “Canine Lyme Disease: Detection,

Treatment and Prevention” and “Lyme Disease in

Humans,” as well as a Judge’s Study Group; a great

fundraiser auction (see page 28 in this issue for details);

our national and regional shows, including Sweeps,

Juniors and Conformation classes on both Thursday and

Friday; our TTCA Annual Meeting and dinner; and the

fabulous Top 20 Invitational Evening of Champions.

The venerable Pat Nelson is in

hospice care.

The internationally respected

member of the Tibetan Terrier Club

of America (TTCA), creator of the

world’s largest Tibetan Terrier

pedigree database and early

supporter of the Native Tibetan

Terrier International Project “is in

good spirits” and “very happy to get

cards from her friends,” reports

daughter Susan Nelson. Beloved

by her colleagues and friends around

the world for her selfless devotion to

Tibetan Terriers, Pat spent years

collecting TT pedigrees from stud

books from around the world and

ultimately complied the world's

largest TT pedigree database. She

then transferred her information to the

K9Ped database where she

maintained it for years (although the

database is currently-inactive). Pat

was also an early supporter of the

Native Tibetan Terrier International

Project established to broaden the

Tibetan Terrier genetic pool by

importing native Tibetan Terriers

from their native Tibet.

“Pat has not only been a keen

supporter of the Native Tibetan

Terrier International Project from

its beginning, but was the first to

visit the Tibetan Terriers imported

to Slovenia, Europe, flying all the

way from her home in USA,”

according to a statement on the

project’s web site. Friends and

colleagues can write to her at Pat

Mary Frances Martin’s six-time Master Agility Champion MACH6 Danser Swilla “Corey” MACH6 CDX RA MX2 MJS3 MXF TQX . Corey earned his last title on December 30, 2016 at the Canine Performance Events Agility Trials where he qualified three times with three 1 s t place wins just 10 days before his death on January 9, 2017 at age 11.5 years. Doctors had previously diagnosed Corey with hemangiosarcoma two weeks after his unprecedented September 29, 2016 victory at the Wine Country Circuit dog show where he became the first and only Tibetan Terrier to win six AKC Master Agility Championship titles. Incredibly, seven weeks after surgery and while still undergoing chemotherapy, Corey went on to perform at the Crown Classic in Cleveland (see photo page 14) where he and Mary Frances finished their Rally Excellent title in Obedience. AKC board sniffs out canine scent work as “a new sport”

Excerpt from the February 2017

American Kennel Club (AKC) Board

of Directors Meeting Minutes.

The AKC Board of Directors

approved a new sport, AKC Scent

Work, at their February 2017

meeting. AKC Scent Work is a sport

that mimics the task of working

detection dogs to locate a scent and

communicate to the handler that the

scent has been found. Scent Work is

a positive, challenging activity that

allows dogs the opportunity to use

their strongest natural sense in a way

that is fun, engaging, and that builds

and strengthens a foundation of trust

between the handler and dog. The

official launch is October 1, 2017.

Clubs interested in holding AKC

Scent Work trials and exhibitors

interesting in participating can find

the Regulations here. Any questions

regarding this new sport should be

sent to [email protected].

Excerpt from page 9 of the January

2017 AKC Board of Directors

Meeting Minutes.

The Board reviewed a

recommendation for a new sport

called AKC Scent Work. Scent

Work is a sport that mimics the task

of working detection dogs to locate a

scent and communicate to the

handler that the scent has been

found. This proposal responds to

many requests that the American

Kennel Club provide such an

event. Significant research has

been done in developing this

program and it is believed it will

meet the needs of many dog

owners.

Scent Work is a sport in which a

dog-handler team must locate

hidden scents within a defined

search area. The dog uses their

sense of smell to locate the target

odor, which may be an essential oil

or the scent of the handler. Any

team who finds and calls all hidden

odors within the designated time

will qualify. Scent Work is a

pass/fail sport, however

placements will be awarded for the

first through fourth place teams,

based on fewest number of faults

and then on time.

Titles are earned when teams reach

a certain number of qualifying legs.

The event will be open to all breeds

and Canine Partners. Dogs must be

registered/listed with the AKC.

Scent Work is a fun and engaging

activity that taps into the dog’s

strongest sense. If approved, clubs

may start applying to hold AKC

Scent Work events on August 1,

2017. Events may be held

starting October 1, 2017. This will

be discussed further at the

February meeting."

AKC Delegate Stacey LaForge

What Dog Owners Want

Simple is Better

Notable changes to AKC policy

in the past year intended to make

it easier for such clubs as the

TTCA to hold events include:

• Clubs can provide premium

lists, judging programs and

catalogs in digital

(electronic) format.

• Clubs can use email rather

than postal mail to announce

event close-outs.

• The sweepstakes application

process is simpler and

alleviates the need to provide

classes and judges.

• Grooming plans are no

longer required.

For other changes, see AKC

Board of Directors Meeting

Minutes, Sports and Events

Initiative, page 20.

AKC to Launch

New Trick Dog Titling Program

The American Kennel Club will launch the AKC

Trick Dog Program, a new titling program for all

canines with any level of ability but especially

those with Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) titles

or experience in rally, obedience and agility.

Offered in collaboration with Do More with Your

Dog (DMWYD), the program will offer four titles:

Novice Trick Dog (TKN), Intermediate (TKI),

Advanced (TKA) and Performer Trick Dogs

(TKP).

NOVICE TRICK DOG (TKN): To earn the TKN title

the dog must perform 10 skills from the Novice

Tricks Checklist. If a dog has a CGC certificate or

title on record at AKC, he must do only 5 novice

tricks to earn the TKN title—e.g., high five, jump

through a hoop, shake hands, run through a tunnel,

etc. The handler may use a food or toy as a lure or

food or a clicker as a reinforcer.

INTERMEDIATE TRICK DOG (TKI): To earn the

TKI title the dog must possess the TKN title and

perform 10 tricks on the Intermediate Tricks

Checklist—e.g., balance a dog biscuit on his nose

or head, carry a basket, catch a soft toy or ball,

crawl on her belly, fetch an object, go find a hidden

object, jump through the handler’s arms, weave

around handler’s legs, find a treat under 1 of 3 cups,

etc. The handler may not use food or toy lures but

may use food rewards and a clicker as a reinforcer.

ADVANCED TRICK DOG (TKA): To earn the TKA

title, the dog must possess the TKI title and perform

5 tricks from the Advanced Tricks Checklist—e.g.,

back up, take a bow, circle right and circle left,

cover her eyes, hide her head, play dead, sit or lie down from

a distance, take a tissue out of a box and bring it to the

handler, etc. The handler may not use food or toy lures but

may use food rewards and a clicker as a reinforcer.

TRICK DOG PERFORMER (TKP): To earn the TKP title,

the dog must possess TKN, TKI and TKA titles and

perform a short routine with at least 10 tricks previously

learned. The routine may have a story—e.g., “This is my

Baby. She hides her face and likes to push the baby carriage

with me. We do weaves and circles together.”

Sisu is the second Tibetan Terrier to

The L1C trial required Sisu to

complete each in less than two

This TT nose how to get you started in K9 scentwork

(Continued on page 17)

I am writing about K9 nosework

because folks have been asking me

how to get started. “Help us, Sisu,”

they say. “How can we start our

canine kids on a more formal nose

work routine?” The first thing I tell

them is how easy K9 nosework is.

“It’s so portable!” I say. “My nose

goes everywhere and the world is an

adventure!”

I started this sport with my partner

Amy Soderman using cardboard

boxes for searching. But you can

use any kind of container—shoe

boxes, Tupperware with holes

punched in the top, flower pot, etc.

You’ll want to start with placing

food in the container, so leave it

open so your kid can get at it. The

containers do not need to match.

Amy started me with 5 or 6

cardboard boxes and added more

over time as I got better and better.

I liked boxes because they helped

me learn the game, and seeing Amy

take them out became my cue in the

beginning that the game was on!

And it didn’t matter at first that I

could see what she was hiding. She

just wanted me to hunt.

Your first step is to find out what

your canine partner really, really

loves. Not likes, LOVES! That is

what you will start with as the target

for your search. My personal

favorite is dried beef heart. This

way, we were not focused on the

end result so much as we were

building up my desire to hunt and

scent. My partner is wicked smart

at developing my pawtential!

But it was not as simple as it

sounds because, like many canine

kids, I was reluctant to venture out

on my own. After all, I was proud

graduate of canine obedience

school and happily put my major

. . . seduced everyone they met.

Such is the power of “The Little People.” We know it. And now so do

hundreds more who succumbed to the charms of our breed at the 8th

annual AKC Meet the Breeds educational event on Saturday, February

11 at the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.

Marking the third year that the family-friendly event upped the ante on

canine excitement at the Westminster dog show, Moms, Dads and

bairns of all ages lingered and learned about the Tibetan Terrier’s

unique qualities that culminate in ‘The Little People’: That profuse

double coat, which the folks learned first-hand ranges from minky-

silky-soft to Christy-Brinkley-strong and ALWAYS commands your

attention. The large, padded snow-shoe-like paws designed to walk

across deep Himalayan snow without sinking. The glorious coat colors

that range from champagne and honeysuckle to pumpkin and tuxedo

black-and-white. Best of all, those unmistakable humanoid traits they

keep us spellbound. TTCA members Flossie Barczewski and Travis

Brock fielded questions while sharing that—despite the moniker—

The Little People are not ‘terriers per se, although they do, in fact,

really Really REALLY come from Tibet where the lamas

cherished them for centuries as good luck charms and the foremost

companions in the world. And that when His Holiness the Dalai Lama

fled Tibet in 1959, he took his Tibetan Terrier “Senge” with him.

Tibetan Terrier Tells How She Got Her Start in K9 Nosework

(Continued from page 13)

relevant—only that your hound is motivated to hunt.

There are advantages and disadvantages to either

food or toys as targets and then as rewards.

When starting out, it’s helpful to work with a training

partner, but it’s not mandatory. Just know that if you

are training independently, you will need to be able

to back tie your pup so you can entice her and put the

reward in a box without her following you from box-

to-box.

If your tail wagger is reluctant to move away from

you, casually stroll around as if you are just going for

a walk. If she needs a bit more encouragement,

nonchalantly investigate each boxes. As soon she

shows ANY level of interest in the box with the

reward, run over and enthusiastically shout,” “Good

girl!” and either bestow a goodie or play tug-a-toy

with her right at the box. The key is to REWARD

AT THE BOX!

skills into practice every day. I’ll admit, it took a bit

of convincing that this ‘box and treat’ business was not

a set up and that I was really free to search. But when

I finally bought in, it was ‘Game on!” and I never

looked back.

So trainers, forget all your obedience commands when

initiating canine nosework. Instead, build up your

kid’s searching desire. It is important that your best

friend learns that she is in control of this game. On the

other hand, those of you with canines less caught up in

the whole ‘obedience mode’ may be gung-ho. In that

case, your biggest challenge will be reeling in your

kids and getting them to focus. You know who you

are!

Your goal as a human partner when starting out is to

learn how to read your canine partner and to pick up

on the subtle signals that she communicates on the trail

of the target. Whether you are using food or toys is not (Continued on back page)
