Late: If students are running late to their pastoral class in the morning, they MUST report to the Administration Office, with a note

in their diary. If a student has been marked absent by the Pastoral Teacher and has not signed in at the Administration Office, a text message will be sent to the parent regarding their absence.

Leaving the property during school time: We remind parents and students of the procedure to follow if a student is required

to leave the campus during school hours?

Parents are asked to write a note in the student’s diary. The student should have this note signed by their Year Level Director or

Assistant before proceeding to the Administration Office to sign out at the designated departure time. If the student returns to the campus during school hours, they are also requested to enter the property via the Administration Office to sign back in.

Please be aware that it is difficult and disruptive to contact students whilst in class. The preferred method of informing the College of

early dismissal is via the student diary presented to the pastoral teacher in pastoral care time.

YEAR 11 DRAMA PRODUCTION ~ ANGELA BETZIEN’S “CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SKIRT” The Year 11 Drama class presented their semester production on Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 October to strong audiences over two matinee and two

evening performances.

Angela Betzien’s “Children of the Black

Skirt” is a gothic fairytale which

explores Australia’s history and the power of storytelling. Four lost children

stumble across an abandoned

orphanage in the Australian bush. They become trapped in a timeless world,

haunted by spirits from the past. They are tormented, too, by the Black Skirt,

a cruel governess who floats up and down the orphanage corridors.

The audience experiences a roller-coaster of emotions as each story shows a unique spirit story present in the orphanage. The spirit transformations

challenged each actor as they performed as multiple characters and in a variety of eras, which required the students to research and unpack each historical

period. Students showed great sensitivity to each story acknowledging the reality of what each child went through, particularly in dark moments of

Australian history.

The Year 11 class have shown an impressive work ethic over the past seven weeks of rehearsal as they have worked as a strong collaborative ensemble. It

has been a pleasure working with this great group of students and we all hope you enjoyed the production.

We would like to formally thank our audiences, and support from Miss Maree Plew, St Michael’s College Maintenance Staff and Front

Office Staff.

Miss Wigg, Drama Teacher

YEAR 9 AQUATICS DAY On Wednesday 19 October, the Year 9 boys’ classes went to the

Port Noarlunga Aquatics Centre for a Community Day. At the Aquatics

Centre there was a range of activities such as fishing, kayaking,

surfing, body boarding and many more fun activities on offer. We

were taught about active and

healthy lifestyle choices and safety

skills when participating in water activities. The highlight of the day for me was fishing because someone in my

group caught a Port Jackson shark but unfortunately he couldn’t keep it and had to throw it back in the water.

It was a great day which we all enjoyed. Thank you to all of the instructors who ran the activities and to everyone involved for organising the day.

UNISA PRINCIPAL’S MERIT LIST EXPERIENCE DAYS Last week saw nine of our current Year 11 students successfully nominated and attend a special Experience Day at various UniSA

Campuses. Nicholas Lopresti, Gianna Guttilla, Scott Hanel, Anthony Seager, Michael Seager, Sebastian Fortuna, Angela Trolio, Asha Kuchel and Lacey Bowshire. Students were nominated by Heads of Department and once accepted they ventured out to the specific

Experience Day’s reflecting their career interest areas. There were Experience Days related to Engineering, Health, Business, and Communication. Students got to work on projects from current UniSA Students and Academics and broaden their understanding of

career possibilities in these fields. We congratulate these nine students for representing our College so well. We appreciate the reviews provided by Gianna Guttila. A great start to a promising emerging career in Communications, being confident to network like this. Well

done Gianna! On Thursday 20 October, I was lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to attend a UniSA Experience Day for Communications, Media and Languages at the Magill Campus. Part of what I liked most about the day was the enthusiasm and resourcefulness of the staff who helped organise the day. Gaining a much more in depth understanding about the endless possibilities in studying a Bachelor of Arts was incredibly useful for me as I left the day pondering upon the option as a future study path. I would definitely recommend this opportunity to Year 11 students in the future because not only do you gain more knowledge and understanding about your study options, but also meeting like-minded people who you can connect with is so rewarding as a student. This Experience Day really has opened my eyes a lot more too so many career opportunities for the future that I didn't even think were possible!

Sebastian Fortuna … thank you for sharing this reflection.

I attended the Experience Engineering Day at UniSA. I learnt about various engineering disciplines such as, mechanical, electronic, mechatronic and civil, and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about pursuing a career in engineering.

Year 10 students who are achieving a very high level of academic success in relevant subjects in Term 3 Year 11 2017, may wish to keep this program in mind. We ask for Heads of Department to nominate students in Week 6 Term 3 – so something for the 2017

calendar. We thank UniSA for providing such worthwhile opportunities to our students.

WORK EXPERIENCE FINAL WEEK 2016 The final week for 2016 allocated to any Year 11 and/or Year 12 wanting to do a Work Experience placement is between the 5-9

December i.e. Week 8 Term 4. The deadline to get all the required paperwork to Mr Vizaniaris is Friday 25 November. Students who have not yet done the compulsory preparation, must book an appointment with Mr Vizaniaris in the coming two weeks. Students who

have not completed the necessary preparation and returned paperwork by the dues dates will have to rearrange any tentative plans to the first week of April holidays 2017.

PEER VEET PEER VEET have advertised for apprentices who have completed VET courses at school in Electrical, Plumbing or Construction. More

information on their website www.peer.com.au, at this Seek link or in the email https://www.seek.com.au/job/31984316?pos=4&type=standout&engineConfig=&userqueryid=188910204203290188&tier=tier1&w

TAFESA TAFESA Applications are now open through SATAC with a closing date of Monday 30 November. There is an informative PowerPoint

that has been posted in the Student Services section of the Intranet. We bring to parent’s attention three critical points.

Firstly it is worth checking the scheduled TAFE Fees as courses can be very expensive and payment is generally made up front for TAFE Courses. VET Help is like a HECS loan and can be organised for Diploma level and above. In the holidays the government f lagged

imminent changes to this system changing over to VET Student Loan system (assuming passed through Parliament) where the loan cap will be significantly reduced. See: https://docs.education.gov.au/node/41951 Not all courses are covered See:

https://docs.education.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/161010_vet_student_loans_eligible_course_list.pdf and of concern is that often there will be a gap between the cap and the actual course fee. Secondly, students who already hold two or more Certificate 3

qualifications and above (even as VET Students at school) do not get any more access to WorkReady subsidised courses. If a Year 12

student has done a Cert 3 VET course they really need to think how they use their next funded entitlement. It becomes expensive if

there are 2 qualifications embedded in the course i.e. packaged program in Sport and Recreation where previous Vet Cert 3 students would be paying full fee for the final Advanced Diploma part of this qualification.

Finally students were reminded that for TAFE, even though it is free and open until 30 November, the date you apply is important as

in many cases if a course becomes competitive i.e. more demand than places, then often students are ranked by the date they applied - so we urge students to apply as soon as possible. For all Certificate 4 and above courses, students will need to pass the CSPA Test

of Numeracy Literacy and Writing and in some cases their score determines competitiveness for a course off, for example Vet Nursing.

There are many TAFESA Information Sessions coming up so it is very important students check out the TAFESA Website in the coming week. As always we welcome students to make an appointment for support. Stop Press: some TAFE courses are added as options

going forward ie not currently there but may be there next week. So it is important to keep checking the TAFESA Website to see what is on offer.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

It was a dream come true for two St Michael’s College Old Scholars when Ebony Marinoff (Class of 2015) and

Rachael Killian, (Class of 2012) where both selected by the Adelaide Crows in the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s

Draft. Marinoff, (pictured right), was drafted with pick No. 7. Read the story and her player profile online at:

Rachael Killian (pictured left) overcame a serious injury a few years ago and is now considered the best up and

coming talent in the country.
