The Star Term 2 Week 10 2020 | 1 community challenge choice Dear St Michael’s College Community, End of Term This time last term, we were all planning and preparing for the possibility of online and off- site learning. After the term break, we moved into a week of dual modes, though attendances were up very quickly, returning us to an on-site model by Week 2. The learning during this time will remain valuable, not only if the COVID-19 situation should shift to a more challenging position, but in an ongoing way for teaching, learning and well-being at the College. It’s now hard to believe where those months have gone! Of course, the effects of COVID-19 continue to impact on our society, including some in our own community. The wide-ranging support structures of the College remain available to all families and I encourage you to maintain contact as necessary. Our College vision of being ‘an inclusive and respectful community, where each individual is known, valued and cared for’ is an aspiration that requires the buy-in of us all, and I appreciate the way our community is acting this out. Thank you to all staff, students, and families who continue to work in partnership through supporting and caring for each other. This is always important, but particularly when times are that little bit tougher. Many restrictions are now lifting and opening up opportunities for increased activity in school life. However, with the term break upon us and the possibility of shifting sands over the next two weeks, we will provide our next detailed community communication relating to COVID-19 on Friday 17 July. Co-curricular and Arts As restrictions have started to lift, one of the great joys has been watching staff and students get back into the range of Co-curricular and Arts opportunities available at the College. Perhaps its not surprising given the break and uncertainty, but there is a tangible excitement evident through each of these groups and I look forward to this growing into next term. Please click the image to view more. Joe De Tullio Congratulations to Mr Joe De Tullio on his retirement as Principal of Star of the Sea. I know their community will miss him greatly, as will Catholic Education in general. He is greatly respected by the staff, students, and families he has worked with during his career, always showing great care and respect for each individual. Being an old scholar (1974), Joe has also remained a great friend, with a heart for St Michael’s College. We wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement. In addition to the wonderful farewell from current Star of the Sea students, please view the video attached, a retirement song performed by students (past Star of the Sea old scholars), dedicated to Mr De Tullio. NEW CANTEEN SERVICES COMMENCING TERM 3, 2020

With great excitement, Rory’s School Lunches is commencing canteen services at St Michael’s College, starting Term 3, 2020. Rory’s is an Adelaide based Catering and Canteen Management Company that is currently delivering lunch services to over 50 private, public, and independent South Australian schools.

We truly believe all students deserve healthy and nutritious food to support their growth and learning. Delivering this is our passion, and is why we have a dedicated team of chefs who prepare our fresh and healthy meals and also why so many South Australian schools have chosen Rory’s to provide for them.

So, welcome to Rory’s School Lunches, and thank you for having us as part of your school community! Our Menu Our team of chefs cook the traditional way! We take advantage of fresh herbs and spices to boost the flavor in our foods, and because our menu is delivered fresh daily, we don’t need to use harmful preservatives to extend its shelf life.

We cater to the fussiest of eaters! Our delicious sauces are packed full of veggies, they won’t even see! We also keep our menus fresh and updated, keeping it exciting for staff and students, which encourages them to try a different range of wholesome foods. Parents can enjoy a guilt-free day off from making lunch too, knowing that our lunches are not only affordable, but fresh and healthy.

Great care has been given to our menu design, ensuring many dietary requirements have been fulfilled. Full details are on our website at www.rorys.com.au.

This year we are also excited to launch Rorys@Home delivery service. Our range includes Family Meal Kits, heat & serve Single Meals, as well as Meat Packs and some key grocery and dairy lines. Be sure to check us out at www.rorys.com.au/rorys-at-home/. Ordering There are a couple of different ways students and staff can purchase lunch or recess. Please note on-line lunch ordering is available at the Primary Campus and recess can be ordered over the counter in the same way it is currently.

Our full menu range is available to order on Qkr and is a guaranteed way to get precisely what you want for your break, and your dietary requirements are met too. Orders can be placed up to 2 weeks in advance until 8.30 am on the day the order is required. Advance ordering will be available from Monday 6 July 2020.

PLASTIC FREE JULYThis week is the beginning of Plastic Free July. This is a global movement that helps millions of people be a part of the solution for plastic pollution, enabling us to have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of Plastic Free July by choosing to refuse single-use plastics? Our Primary and Secondary Eco Squads are here to help, and will be providing weekly plastic free tips on our Facebook page, and through the schoolstream app. Let’s start the challenge with an easy plastic free tip: Say NO to plastic straws. Plastic straws are a major waste item found on our beaches and the cause of death of many sea turtles. Reusable straws are a much better option, or we could just sip straight from the cup! To join up for the Plastic Free July Challenge, simply register here: http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/ Our sea turtles and Eco Squads thank you!

YEAR 8 VISUAL ARTSStudents explored the Surrealist artists MC Escher, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Brad Holland.

They created ‘Fantasy Handscapes’ using their own hands in a Surrealist inspired composition.

Mrs Nicolle LeRay-Warren, Head of Department – Visual Arts

YEAR 9 ART - FASHION & TEXTILESThe Year 9 students have been researching local Adelaide artist and Designer, Tiff Manuell who creates hand-crafted pieces of art to wear, designed to bring colour and happiness into the lives they land in.

The students' task was to design a clutch inspired by Manuell's art work. They experimented in a variety of mixed media and transferred their best design on to an A3 piece of canvas. The final clutch was constructed using pattern development and sewing skills.

YEAR 10 VISUAL ARTThe Year 10 Art students explored the work of American artist, Chuck Close, who has achieved international recognition for his large scale portraits and grid-oriented approach.

The students drew a portrait of themselves, a member of their family, or a friend, and utilised maths and art skills through their awareness of scale and proportion. They used a grid to break down the portrait into small incremental units so that they could focus on each part to avoid being overwhelmed by the whole.

The Year 10 students also explored clay building techniques to create an authentic warrior-style figure. This was inspired by pattern and line artworks of Indigenous and Maori artists from New Zealand.

YEAR 9 GIRLS VEX ROBOTICS Mrs Lumibao’s Year 9 Girls Digital Technologies class have learned about robotics using VEX Robots. Students worked on assembling the arm and claw of the robot, and coding the robot to do the “Speedy Delivery Challenge”, where the robot, from a starting position, picks up soda cans from designated locations, and delivers them to the loading dock. “In Year 9 Girls Digital Technologies, we have been learning robotics. For the past few weeks, we have built our own robots and learned how to program them (virtually) to do different tasks. To do this, we used a program called VEX Robotics. This program taught us how to code with blocks in simple and easy ways. We coded robots to do different tasks such as a dance routine, drawing a house, running basketball drills and much more. After we learnt how to code the robots, we built an arm for the robots so they can pick up objects and transport them. By working in teams, we successfully built the arm by using the VEX V5 Claw-bot kit onto the VEX V5 Speedbot. This week we are programming the robots to pick up cans and transport them to a different location. Learning robotics has given us new skills that will be useful in the future since our society is becoming more and more technology based. Robotics was a very enjoyable and fun topic to learn and I would recommend it to anyone.” - Erin Tunbridge (9GPC-01)

COLLEGE LEADER PROFILESZACHARY BUCK

As a leader I would describe myself as hardworking.

Something that I have done that I am the proudest of was winning the 2019 Under 18’s Football grand final because it was an unreal

experience, and the team and I worked very hard to get to that stage of the season.

Leadership means to me being a voice of the students, and being respected by students and teachers.

This year as a College Leader I wish to be best known as someone who is approachable and respected throughout the College.

To be a Lasallian Leader means to be determined to help others.

Something interesting about me no one knows is that I have never been overseas.

COLLEGE LEADER

COLLEGE LEADER PROFILESWILLIAM FOLEY

As a leader I would describe myself as inclusive and inspiring.

The things that I do that I am the proudest of are being inclusive. For example, including other people into group events because I would

appreciate someone doing that for me.

My greatest sporting moment was the 2018 Melbourne 1st XI cricket trip where we won.

Leadership means to me leading from the front as well as bringing other people along with you.

Five words which best describe my personality are caring, trustworthy, generous, hardworking, and honest.

A quote that I believe in is “hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”.

I have a pet dog whose name is Benji.

COLLEGE LEADER

COLLEGE LEADER PROFILESGABRIELLA WARD

Something that I do that I am the proudest of is having a positive mindset as this helps to keep an open mind. This includes being inclusive, forming new friendships, and solving everyday problems.

My greatest sporting moment was becoming a National Champion in cheerleading.

Leadership means to me incorporating everyone’s ideas, and guiding those ideas into something that helps everyone.

Five words which best describe my personality are bubbly, talkative, procrastinator, sporty, and outgoing.

This year as a College Leader I wish to be best known as someone who is approachable, and can help make a difference.

One chore I don’t like doing is washing the dishes!

APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIESSt Michael’s College is often contacted by different businesses who are interested in recruiting candidates for apprenticeship positions. We have recently been contacted by a Cabinet Maker in Newton. To be fair, all Year 12 Construction students will be contacted to make them aware of this opportunity. Students are encouraged to contact myself, or one of our Career Counsellors, to notify us if you would like to be advised regarding further apprenticeship positions.

At this stage of the year, students are often keen to complete their SACE. However, this is not always the case. The College has been contacted by a large concreting company who is interested in recruiting someone to work as a Form Worker. RenewalSA are also offering a Work Experience position with a view to beginning a Certificate 3 in Stone Masonry.

Opportunities are for apprenticeships with the Group Training Company Statewide are also available in Civil Construction. This is an eight-week full time program, beginning at the end of July. Please see Mr Woolford as soon as possible if you are interested.

Mr Kevin Woolford, VET Coordinator

YEAR 10 AND YEAR 11 STUDENTS GETTING READY FOR TERM 3 SUBJECT SELECTIONYear 10 and Year 11 StudentsOver the last week, the Year 10 and Year 11 students have been hearing about the many subjects available to them in 2021 at St Michael's College. In Term 3, students will be asked to submit a list of subjects they wish to study next year and in preparation for this, the Year 10 students review their subject choices within the PLP program.

This year we have the extensive Careers and Vet Portal accessible on SEQTA by clicking on the black and green tile. It is the gateway to answering most career questions. Around Week 4, students will receive hardcopies of resources to aid in the process as well as attend extra assemblies outlining the 2021 Subject Selection Process. In terms of the extra support of Career Counselling we invite students who still require assistance to book in for a 30-minute time slot with one of the Career Counsellors. There is a pre-appointment form to fill in before the first appointment to ensure students are well prepared to make the most of this appointment. Parents are welcome to attend at the scheduled time. The Subject Selection process culminates in a Subject Counselling session where students and their parents attend a ten-minute review discussion of their subject choices to finalise selections.

At this stage, most students wait to receive their package of materials and attend the Subject Selection assemblies and respective Parent’s evenings, so they have a more informed understanding of what is required. Careers appointments are about drilling down to fine detail, rather than having the process explained

in advance. We welcome any email questions: [email protected] and [email protected]. For Vocational Education Questions, please contact [email protected]

YEAR 12 UPDATECareers PresentationIt was wonderful to have the whole year level in the LEC Auditorium. As part of the assembly, Rose Coorey and Anthony Vizaniaris presented information about changes to Tertiary Entrance due to the COVID-19 experience, links to University contacts, tips on getting ready to secure employment for the end of year, and a general pep talk about where Year 12 students should be positioned academically. The detailed PowerPoint that formed the basis of this talk is accessible on the Careers and VET tile on SEQTA under Important Information/ Careers Presentations. We highlighted that a letter will be coming out from Mr Foley soon, outlining some of these new pathways to University. Each of these new schemes have set application requirements and a set closing date, so we have reminded students to keep an eye on their emails to avoid missing out on upcoming opportunities.

Year 12 Parent SATAC Tertiary Pathways Evening On Monday 3rd August Year 12 Parents and Carers are invited to attend a talk by Rose Coorey, Career Counsellor, in the LEC Auditorium. The talk will cover University pathway information. Parents of students who have no desire to contemplate tertiary education will have a free night!

It will run for approximately 45 minutes and begin at 7pm. During this time, Year 12 students are welcome to career surf at the Tertiary Pathways Evening in Founders Hall, or remain at home to complete their study!

TERTIARY PATHWAYS EVENING MONDAY 3RD AUGUST 6-8PM FOUNDERS HALLWe will have representatives from each of the South Australian Tertiary providers present in Founders Hall to provide resources and answer individual queries. Traditionally this is an event attended by Year 11 and 12 students with their families.

To make the most of the event, it is very important students have investigated each institution, University/ TAFE, and identified courses of interest. Students are encouraged to investigate potential courses and have a list of questions prepared. This is like an Expo where students come to collect University/TAFE Booklets.

During mid-August there will also be University Open Days where students and families can check in directly at the University. We assume this will be on campus, however it may be a virtual experience (we will confirm this once advised).

CAREER RESEARCHFlinders Enhanced University Tours for Year 12 Families The Enhanced Tour Program is designed for Year 12 students and parents and is held at the Flinders University Bedford Park campus. It will give both students and parents the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of their course options, pathways to Flinders, information on how to apply, and the chance to speak with a student adviser and/or a current Flinders student to learn about their university experience. Students and parents are encouraged to book as soon as possible via the online booking form as places are limited. This is a great opportunity to meet current students during the school holidays and explore your options before the SATAC applications open in August, and year 12 exam preparation begins.Bookings can be made via the online booking form: flinders.edu.au/schools-tour.
