We also use the same email list and Constant Contact to let members know about important announcements or events in the Epiphany community, such as funerals or special occasions. We use a recorded calling system to reach members who do not use email with these same announcements. Please make sure we are up-to-date with your preferred contact method for these announcements as needed.

You can also like our Facebook page for these announcements, as well as fun pictures and vid-eos that show the Epiphany community in action: https://www.facebook.com/epiphanylcelmhurst/

Finally, if you miss a Sunday, you can listen to sermons online at our website: http://epiphanyelmhurst.org/sermons/

You can also watch the whole 9:30 a.m. service on our YouTube channel, which can be found by searching for “Epiphany Lutheran Church” on YouTube. The service is live streamed and recorded so you can watch it live or at any time.

Communications and Epiphany

As a new program year begins, here is a reminder about all of the ways you can stay in the know about what’s happening at Epiphany!

The Star is Epiphany’s monthly newsletter, which is distributed via email from Constant Contact or by mail according to member prefer-ences. Please make sure that we have your correct and preferred email address, or make sure we have the correct address for you on our mailing list, and notify us of any changes.

A new program year is beginning! This means new opportunities to welcome guests, including guests who may be looking for a new church home. EVERYONE is needed to help continue to cre-ate a welcoming church community! How can we do this?

If you see someone on a Sunday morning who does not look fa-miliar to you, say hello and introduce yourself with a handshake. Ask if they are visiting, if they are local, and if they are interested in learning about any of our other fellowship or Christian educa-tion opportunities. Bring them to a pastor to introduce them, or give them a copy of the Star (hard copies are found on the bulle-tin board by the welcome desk near the front doors). Who knows? Maybe that person or family will experience God’s love and grace through you!

If you have friends or acquaintances in Elmhurst or the sur-rounding areas who might be looking for a welcoming church community, now is a GREAT time to invite them to church with you, point them to our website, share this newsletter with them, or have them call the office or email [email protected] to get connected.

Thanks for your help as together we strive to follow Jesus in cre-ating a safe, welcoming community here at Epiphany.

“I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” – Matthew 25:35

Study on Worship and Music

Before we move any further with our search, Pastor Feltman invites all who have a passion for worship and music and who want to talk about what worship at Epiphany will look like in the future to join him as we dive deeper into the meaning and purpose of worship and how worship can serve our congrega-tion’s mission. We’ll begin by working through an ELCA resource, With the Whole Church: A Study Guide for Renewing Worship. We’ll also watch and listen to recordings of traditional and contemporary worship and per-haps even take a field trip or two. While this study may take more time, the initial sessions will be held on Wednesdays in September and October—September 12, 19, and 26, and October 3, 10, 17, and 24, at 7:00 p.m. Whether you’re young or old, “traditional” or “contemporary,” long-time Lutheran or new to the church, please join us as we explore and help give direction to worship at Epiphany in the future.

Interim Music Director Named

Epiphany, like many congregations, is made up of folks who have a wide variety of tastes and preferences when it comes to worship and music. We have also strug-gled, as many congregations have, to find a way to find just the right mix of “traditional” and “contemporary” elements in worship. The Musician Search Committee has found that that struggle has made it difficult to find just the right candidate for our director of music position. Unfortunately, the conversations end up being simply a stating of individuals’ preferred style.

Ollie looks forward to settling down again in the Chicago area and using the combination of who he is (a person of faith) and what he does (professional musician) to help lead uplifting worship at Epiphany. Welcome aboard, Ollie!

Oliver Townsend has been named Interim Director of Music and will begin his work with us on September 10. Ollie is from Hinsdale, is a graduate of Butler University, and has served as organist/music director at three churches in the western suburbs of Chicago. His most recent experience is playing keyboards and conducting/directing many Broadway-style shows. In November, he completed four years of traveling the country, most re-cently with the Broadway National Tour of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He has spent this summer playing summer stock in New York.

Congregation Council to Engage in Strategic Planning Process

The Congregation Council will be engaging in the fall in an intentional process of making sure our programs and activities are aligned with our mission statement.

To do so, we have engaged the help of Intentional Impact, a firm that has helped many con-gregations (many of them Lutheran!) across the country. The purpose of the process will be to develop 1) clarity of vision and focused ministry, 2) purposeful strategy, 3) organizational structure for the next phase of growth, and 4) develop leadership. This process will begin in September and will be complete by November, just in time to inform our discussions about the 2019 budget.

The process will move in three steps.

Step 1 Leadership Audit (September 6) Includes: Pastors, Staff (during the day) and Council (meets at 7:00 p.m.) One-day, on site meeting facilitated by Intentional Impact. A couple of weeks after the audit meetings, a comprehensive report is provided by Intentional Impact suggesting patterns and processes necessary to move forward with confidence and clarity as a unified leadership team.

Step 2 Priorities Retreat (Saturday, September 22, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) Includes: Pastors, Staff, Executive Committee, select Council members One-day retreat is designed to clarify the recommendations and begin laying out how to im-plement the most important of them. It drives clarity and focus on Epiphany’s vision.

Step 3—Strategy Session (Saturday, November 3, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) Includes Pastors, Staff, Executive Committee, select Council members During a one-day Strategy Session, we will take the language and priorities from the Leader-ship retreat and create a timeline and responsibilities action plan. With this plan, we will be on track to accomplish alignment with roles and teams around a focused action plan with a re-source model that supports the plan.

In addition to the process with staff and Council, a number of present and future leaders (not now serving on Council) will be identified and invited to participate in a separate program of leadership development. That training begins with sessions on October 12 and 13.

The cost of this process will be around $10,000. We’re happy to report that the Metropolitan Synod has given Epiphany a grant of $7,000 to help with the cost, and an Epiphany family has contributed $3,000 to cover the balance.

If you are interested in knowing more about this process or would like to participate, please contact Pastor Ron Feltman at (630) 832-8457 or [email protected].

Two Committees Being Revived and Re-Energized

Two very important committees, the Christian Education and Stewardship Committees are be-ing revived and re-energized this fall. The Christian Education Committee is responsible for giving vision to the “Growing in Faith” part of our mission statement by directing our faith formation ministries. In the past, the com-mittee has been primarily responsible for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation, and Adult Education. Would you like to help give vision and organization to these aspects of our ministries? If so, please join us for our monthly meetings. They will be held on September 11, October 9, No-vember 13, and December 11, at 7:00 p.m. The Stewardship Committee’s charter is simple—to help members of Epiphany Lutheran Church become more generous givers of time, talent, and treasure. This is done primarily through the annual Stewardship Education Program, but also through opportunities to learn about advanced gifts and creative ways of giving. The Stewardship Committee needs individuals who are passionate about generous giving and who want to help others be more generous. Committee meetings will be held on September 10, October 15, November 5, and December 3, at 7:00 p.m. If you have questions about either of these opportunities, please contact Pastor Ron Feltman at (630) 832-8457 or [email protected].

Epiphany has a wealth of volunteer opportunities available throughout the upcoming year. Consider serving in any of the following roles:

Stewardship Committee Christian Education Committee Assisting Ministers Readers Communion Assistants Ushers

If you are interested in participating in any of our volunteer ministries please contact the church office at [email protected] or (630) 832-8457.

Sunday School Starts September 9

Fall Kick off is Sunday, September 9, which is the official start date for Sunday School for the 2018/2019 academic calendar year. Parents, we are updating our records so we need you to complete a new form for each child you register for the upcoming Sunday School year. You can find the forms on the wall behind the information desk, downstairs on the Sunday School office door, in the church office, or on our website at EpiphanyElmhurst.org. Please complete and return your forms by August 26. If you have any questions please contact Scott Miller at (630) 207-5746 or at [email protected]. We’re looking forward to a great year!

Baptisms

Are you interested in having your child baptized at Epiphany? The sacrament of baptism is the first step of a life-long journey of faith, where we become part of the body of Christ. The Lutheran tradition teaches that in baptism, we die to our old, sinful selves and are raised from the water into a new life in Christ, just as Christ once rose from the grave. As parents, we promise during our child’s baptism to teach them about the faith and to care for our child’s spiritual life until they are ready to take on their baptismal promises for themselves. If you are interested in having your child baptized at Epiphany, we ask that you come to a baptism class to learn more about this sacrament, and to schedule your child’s baptism. Our schedule of baptism classes for the year is as follows:

Sunday, September 16 at 10:45am

Sunday, November 18 at 10:45am

Sunday, January 13 at 10:45am

Sunday, March 10 at 10:45am

Sunday, May 19 at 10:45am

If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jennifer. We hope to see you there!

On Thursday, September 13 Pastor Moser will begin a 7-session class on Romans. Classes will be held Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and we will need a minimum of five people signed up to hold the class. If you are interested, sign up at the Welcome Center in the church entrance, or call the church office (630) 832-8457.

We are in need of additional Sunday School teachers for all grades (Kindergarten through 4th grade) for the 2018-2019 school year, September 9 - May 19. Our vision is to have three teachers per grade, so that your commitment as a teacher is only once a month at the very least. Please consider sharing your gifts and teaching our youth about the bible.

Never taught? No problem. Our curriculum is easy enough and provides ideas for each les-son. Still hesitant? Scott Miller is always available for questions.

We will have a meeting on Tuesday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel to review the up-coming curriculum and answer any questions.

Please contact Scott Miller today at [email protected] or (630) 207-5746 to add your name to our Sunday School family!

First Bibles for 4th and 5th Graders

When parents bring their children to the font for baptism, they promise “to place in her/his hands the Holy Scriptures.” We support our 4th and 5th grade parents in this endeavor by providing first Bibles to present in worship on Sunday, September 30, at the 9:30 a.m. worship service.

To prepare for this event, 4th and 5th graders and their parents are invited to attend a fun ses-sion where we will to introduce the Bible to the young people. We encourage both parents to attend this class with their child, but at least one parent, godparent, or grandparent is ex-pected to attend with the child. There will be two classes to choose from. You only need to attend one of the classes. Classes will be held on Sunday, September 23, at 10:45 a.m. in the Chapel, and Tuesday, September 25, 6:00 p.m., in the Chapel. During this session we will take a “whirlwind trip” through the scriptures as we open up the kids’ new Bibles and learn how God speaks to us, even today, though God’s holy word. This is fun and filled with all kinds of activities. Parents will also be given the opportunity to write a dedication in their child’s Bible! At the end of the session, we will have a time of prayer, and the Bibles will be placed on the altar in the sanctuary to be presented on September 30.

If you have questions, please contact Pastor Ron Feltman at (630) 832-8457 or [email protected].

Praying For Our Children

An invitation for moms, grandmothers, godmothers, stepmothers, aunts, and neighbors to come together in prayer for the children in our lives.

Starting on September 20 women from our church and community will meet every Thursday morning from 8:20 - 8:50 a.m. in the Epiphany sanctuary

This year we are going to shake it up. Instead of reading a book, we will be pulling prayer

themes from all different sources: devotionals, bible scripture studies, videos, books, new

methods of prayer practices, articles, etc. There may be a few weeks where I will email you

something short to read, but for the most part, this is going to be a year to simply come and

see what we have in store for you during opening thoughts! Pastor Jen and I are excited to get

started!

If you are interested, or know of anyone who would be interested, please contact Amy Wilson

at [email protected] or (312)933-3989.

The nursery will be staffed to provide complimentary services for those with babies, pre-

schoolers, or PM Kindergarteners.

Did you know that Epiphany Lutheran Church has a written Protection Policy for Children and Vulnerable Adults, sometimes called our “SafeChurch” Policy. Over the summer, a committee comprised of Cheri Richards, Teresa Doering, Lori Lewis, and Pastor Feltman reviewed our SafeChurch Policy and made some important improvements. The key features of the policy are: All staff and volunteers are responsible for abiding by the policy. A background check is required of all staff and volunteers at least every two years. It is our goal that a minimum of two unrelated adult workers will always be present when children or vulnerable adults are being supervised during our programs and activities. Classroom doors should remain open unless there is a window in the door or a side widow beside it. For children below third grade, a security check-in/check-out procedure will be followed. The child will be signed in and out by a parent or guardian. Epiphany Lutheran Church will provide training on this child protection policy to all new child and youth workers and will strive to provide opportunities for additional training classes or events on an annual basis. All groups using the facilities of Epiphany Lutheran Church must sign a statement attesting that they understand the child protection policy. Parents of all child and youth participants in our programs will be given a copy of this policy.

For a copy of the SafeChurch Policy, you may email the church office at in-

[email protected]. If you have questions about Epiphany’s SafeChurch Policy, please

contact Pastor Ron Feltman at [email protected].

Group Work Camp

"Thirty One high schoolers from our LYO high school youth group, along with 6 chaperones, attended Work Camp in Richwood, West Virginia, from July 20-28, 2018. Joining with other youth groups from different parts of the country, we had a wonderful week of fellowship, fun, and life-changing growth in faith as we engaged in Christian service by working on construc-tion projects at local residents' homes. Richwood is a town of about 2,100 which suffered a lot of damage and destruction during a massive flood in the summer of 2016. Residents were grateful for our service and loving, caring presence.

Epiphany LYO would like to thank our Epiphany family for your financial support as well as your prayers for us on our trip. We look forward to traveling to Savannah, GA, in July 2019!"

Check It Out!

If a junior high science textbook author and the writer of fire-and-brimstone religious tracts collaborated to write fiction, the detailed, clear, and logical prose would try to scare unbelievers into Christiani-ty. "It's one thing to have the feeling you're not alone. It's another thing to be sure of it--and not know where the intruder is." As the story opens, Owen and the other characters in The Delusion are real-istically gifted and flawed; their concerns, petty and significant, mir-ror our own; Laura Gallier's supernatural beings are simultaneously classical and fresh. The author, who is actually a noted speaker on sexual purity, is working to present this frightening tale on the big screen. Be warned: this dark narrative is not for everyone! However, the right type of reader will find this book insightful and entertaining. There are many items suitable for everyone that can also be checked out for FREE! --Assistant Librarian Teri

Epiphany Bowling League Starts in September - Looking for New Bowlers Epiphany’s Bowling League will begin again in September, providing a weekly night of fun ac-tivity and camaraderie for men and women ages 16 and over. On Thursday evenings beginning September 6, we will gather at 7:00 p.m. at Stardust Bowl in Addison. This league is designed for fun, and no matter what your average might be or how long it may have been since you last bowled (if ever!) we guarantee balanced competition and fun for eve-ryone. Teams are formed with a goal in mind of being evenly skilled and having close matches, and close team scores are the norm every Thursday. We like it best for bowlers to sign up for the full season, which runs until May with a number of holidays taken off during the year; but we know that this schedule can be challenging for some people so if you want to join for half the season, that’s O.K., too. The league, which has been around for over 50 years, needs more bowlers, so we’re hoping you’ll give it a try! If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact Bob Sutherland at (630) 279-1636 or Marty Jensen at (630) 605-6414. NOTE: Returning bowlers should also contact Bob or Marty as soon as possible to confirm and secure your spot in the league !

Grace Café

The next Grace Café will be at Epiphany on September 24. Grace Café is a program that provides free meals

two Monday nights a month from September through mid-May and involves 14 Elmhurst churches. Anyone

who is hungry, struggling with a tight budget, or lonely and eager to share a meal with others is welcome at

Grace Café. Serving begins at 5:00 pm and concludes at 6:30 pm. There is no charge to participate, and reserva-

tions are not needed.

Host churches have found Grace Café to be a rewarding experience for guests and church members alike. Over the coming weeks I am looking for volunteers to assist with set up, food preparation, serving, and clean up. Look for a sign-up sheet in Epiphany Center. If you are interested in more information or simply would like to volunteer for this wonderful event, please contact me.

Thank you, Jon Elsass [email protected] (773) 331-1914

It’s time for school bells to ring again and the children in the 277 Elmhurst School Dis-trict families currently identified as needing assistance will be able to make a more suc-cessful start to the new school year because of the generosity of the Epiphany donors of school supplies. Your response to this need has truly been amazing! The families and school staff are very grateful for your thoughtfulness and support. Bless you all!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Payton (right) with his brother, TJ, and Cubs left fielder, Kyle Schwarber

Payton Ptak

Epiphany’s Payton Ptak served as the honorary bat boy at the Chicago Cubs game against the Milwau-kee Brewers on August 14.

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital sponsored the event. It provided Payton the chance to visit the dugout, watch the pre-game warm-up, and get some autographs. He even got to meet his favorite Cub, Kris Bryant.

Payton was born at 25 weeks, given a 50 percent chance of survival, and was at risk of losing his eye-sight. He received care at Good Samaritan, and at the age of twelve he is fully healthy with almost 20/20 vision and pitches for the Elmhurst Explosion travel team. He recently tried out for, and made the nationally recognized team The Longshots, and will play for them next season.

Congratulations, Payton!

Father and Son Champs

Congratulations to Epiphany’s Rock Smith as well as his dad and team manager Bobby Smith for the Elmhurst Youth Baseball/River For-est 14U Little League team taking second in state! Way to go, boys!

Thank You!

August 13 Pastor Ron Feltman Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church Elmhurst, IL 60126 Dear Pastor Feltman and members of the congregation, Thank you for the generous amount of school supplies you collected once again this year. All the school social workers in District 205 have been notified and sent a list al all the various ma-terials. I have already begun to deliver the requested supplies to the schools. These items are going to the many students in the district who are unable to purchase them for themselves. Is was very fortunate to have these supplies available even before the first days of school, so many children will be able to start the year off with all the materials they need. In particular, a special thank you to Carole Poltrock for again coordinating this project, and even sorting the materials! Grace and Wilbur Lippert began this project many years ago, and we extend our sympathy to you on the death of Grace. Wilbur has contributed to this project even this year, and our hearts go out to him. The United Community Concerns Association greatly appreciates the generosity of Epiphany and its willingness to help students in the Elmhurst Public Schools. Thank you so much for your assistance. Sincerely, Mary Jo Corbett United Community Concerns Association Family Coordinator
