Proud to be the designatedPony Express Capital of Nebraska

It’s easy to overlook the intangibles of a city – intan-gibles like community spirit, the pro-business environ-ment and the involvement of people who give thou-sands upon thousands of hours of their time and talents as volunteers to “make it work” for everyone. Our intangibles help create an All America City.

Gothenburg can boast all of the above and more – tangible accomplishments that underscore attitudes that make this community a winner.

We are excited to share this information about our community and show you what we have to offer. A rich heritage and friendly people await visitors as well as prospective businesses and residents. Gothenburg has deep roots in agricul-ture and livestock produc-tion, as well as a diversified business and industry base that includes retail, truck-ing, manufacturing and ag-related industry. We are committed to progress and work cooperatively with the city and Dawson Area Devel-opment to provide strong community infrastructure, winning economic develop-ment incentives and supe-rior quality-of-life features. Located along Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad all make Gothenburg an ideal area for future growth and development.

Although agriculture is still the economic mainstay for the area, industrial growth has continued through the addition of substantial

companies like Parker-Tech Seal Division, Monsanto Seed Research and Water Utilization Learning Center, Baldwin Filters, Frito-Lay, Dayton-Phoenix Group and Hoovestol Trucking creating in excess of 500 jobs in the community.

Gothenburg boasts over 3,500 residents and is a charming city with tree-lined streets, lovely homes, manicured lawns, specialty shops, active business dis-trict, green parks, exercise trails and a quality of life desired by many. Opportu-nities for business, families, adults, children and the elderly are abundantly avail-able. Gothenburg, Nebraska is perfect for those who dream of the benefits of liv-ing, working and playing in a small town.

Clean water, crisp un-polluted air and natural resources, along with man-made amenities, give credibility to Gothenburg’s

promise for an uncompro-mising lifestyle for people of all ages and walks of life. The people of Gothenburg honor their legacy with values that include a strong work ethic, time for recre-ation and a place to grow and appreciate life. There is a collective pride in improv-ing and maintaining public and private property. There is collective ambition to provide new and innovative economic opportunities for existing residents as well as newcomers.

People in Gothenburg enjoy all the benefits a small town has to offer. That in-cludes a variety of sports, as well as outdoor and leisure activities. Local parks offer a popular place for family gatherings and community festivals. History buffs can find a wealth of information at the Pony Express Station, the Gothenburg Historical Museum and the Sod House Museum. Historic homes

grace the streetscape of-fering a picture of various architectural styles.

Recreation opportunities abound. Whether its tennis, volleyball, baseball, swim-ming, water sports, hunting or fishing, you can find it in Gothenburg. Amateur or pro, you can golf at a nationally ranked 18-hole public course, Wild Horse Golf Club. Cowboy hats and boots are also a regular sight at the annual July ro-deo and on summer week-ends. Park your horse, your car or your RV. Stay for a day, a week or for as long as you like. Our door is always open and the welcome sign is out.

Gothenburg is more than just a place… it’s a state of mind.

Gothenburg’s city admin-istration is led by an elected mayor and four city council members. A professional administrator employed by the city manages the day-to-day operations. The city council meets bimonthly.

Bringing testimony to the city’s enterprising track record are a long list of projects including: comput-erization in city offices; auto-mated electric load man-agement reducing electric rates; major expansion of the Carnegie Library; nearly 100% success in applying for CDBG funds; an innovative neighborhood revitalization program; railroad overpass; new/existing streets, roads and state highways under resurfacing/widening; waste treatment plant, community child care center.

Gothenburg Senior Center

The Senior Center was originally built in 1983 at a cost of $125,000. The money to build it initially was raised in nine days coming from local contributors. Since then, the cen-ter has undergone a $300,000 expansion/renovation. Monday through Friday, the staff serves congre-gate meals at noon,

provides meals-on-wheels to shut-ins and offers activi-ties for the senior residents of Gothenburg.

Building Blocks Child CareIn 1992, following the re-

cruitment of Baldwin Filters, the city recognized a need for additional child care due to the fact that many of the employees at Baldwin were women. The child care center is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays taking children from 6 weeks to 13 years of age. It is able to handle 88 children furnish-ing two meals plus one snack. School-age children are walked to and from the elementary school nearby.

Gothenburg Public LibraryWith the help of a $7,000

grant from the Carnegie Foundation, the Gothen-burg Carnegie Library was built in 1917. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it offers a unique architectural style. In 1999, a 6,000-square-foot addition was added at a cost of $1.2 million. It was funded entire-ly by private donations. The library offers a computer lab, study rooms, children’s library with computer lab and a community room. During the school year, over 100 preschool children (3-4-5 year olds) are enrolled in Story Hour. During the sum-mer months, approximately 170 kids (kindergarten through sixth grade) attend Reading Club.

Volunteer Fire Department

The fire department has a 44-person squad of all-volunteer firemen. The six-bay facility is large for a city of our size. The average time lapse from the mo-ment a fire/emergency call is paged to when the first unit is enroute is 2.3 min-utes. Volunteers attempt to qualify as Emergency Medi-cal Technicians within three years of joining.

Gothenburg Airport The airport, at an eleva-

tion of 2,555 feet, provides two instrument approach runways and a fuel station. Overnight hanger space is available.

CITY SERVICES 7

In the latter part of 1882, Olof Bergstrom, a worker with the Union Pacific Rail-road, conceived the idea that a town was needed where Gothenburg now stands. The town is situated in the wonderful Platte River Valley, which is probably the greatest agricultural valley in the world. Bergstrom chose a farmstead north of the town site and traveled back to Sweden to convince his fellow countrymen to migrate to the United States – to Nebraska – to build a new town in the West.

He was most persuasive and by July 8, 1885, Gothen-burg was incorporated as a town with a population of 300. Swedes and Ger-mans settled the area, as is evidenced by the name Gothenburg. The town was named for Goteborg, Sweden, but was given a German spelling by railroad officials.

The digging of a 12-mile canal off the Platte River and construction of the first man-made lake designed to generate electricity encour-aged several industries and factories to locate here. Companies included shirt and overall factories, brick kilns, bathtub and ironworks factories, flour mills, vinegar and pickles works, a cigar manufacturer and a barbed wire factory. Boom days came early in the 1890s. Gothenburg was destined to be the “little Chicago” of Nebraska.

The money panic of 1893 turned the boom to bust. However, the canal provided the first irrigation system for about 17,000 acres east of the lake, and agricul-ture quickly settled in as the main industry for the growing community. The man-made lake spurred in-dustrial, community and ag-ricultural growth, a hallmark

of Gothenburg’s success throughout its history.

By 1892, Gothenburg resi-dents had electricity – the first in western Nebraska.

Community volunteers cleared land, planted trees and erected buildings to develop a park area adja-cent to the lake in the early 1900s, calling it Lafayette Park. With the help of many organizations and residents, the lake and park represent the ingenuity and tenacity of our volunteers. Lake Hel-en’s impact on Gothenburg’s

early industrial history and on its agricultural and recreational development over more than a century ago made it the commu-nity’s choice for submitting it as Project of the Century to the Nebraska Commu-nity Improvement Program. Gothenburg was named Community of the Century in 2000 and Lake Helen received the acclaim of be-ing named Project of the Century. Lake Helen recent-ly got another facelift that included draining, dredging and an all-out overhaul. City officials continue a process to improve the area.

Gothenburg’s founder literally led Swedish im-migrants to his proposed town site and asked them to make his vision a reality. Many families in the com-munity today can point to a specific person in the family tree who provided leader-ship to Gothenburg during its development over the years. A former mayor once stated, “We don’t do things for personal gain, we do things so that the commu-nity gains.”

We continue to have a vi-sion for our future to make Gothenburg a place where people want to live, work and play.

Today, excellent health care is a priority with the new technologies in medi-cine, changes in individual health habits and an in-creasing awareness of the value of responsive medical service. Gothenburg has an exceptional hospital facility, which includes four fam-ily practitioners, a general surgeon, one physician’s as-sistant, one OB/GYN special-ist, one orthopedic surgeon, two nurse practitioners, four

dentists, three optometrists and three chiropractors.

Gothenburg Memorial Hospital

Gothenburg Memorial Hospital is a Critical Access Facility serving the needs of Gothenburg and the sur-rounding area. The existing building was built in 1969 with a 3.5 million dollar addition and renovation project completed in 2004 to provide up-to-date medi-

cal care in our service area. In 2011 a new, 3.4 million dollar, 17,000 sq ft physi-cian clinic was completed to bring state of the art facilities to Gothenburg with the potential for growth in the medical community. The hospital, recognized in 2012 as one of the top 19 performing critical access hospitals in the nation, is an exceptional facility serving the needs of Gothenburg and the surrounding areas. With a mission of provid-ing quality, cost effective healthcare services while promoting the wellness and quality of life in our service communities, GMH serves as a model example for rural healthcare.

Specialty services and clinics are available and new technology and services are implemented to ensure the most recent advances in healthcare area available. Staff members receive con-tinuing education and work to advance their practice to provide the quality care the people served have come to expect.

HEALTHCARE 9

People in Gothenburg enjoy all the benefits a small town has to offer. That in-cludes a variety of sports, as well as outdoor and leisure activities.

Parks along the beautiful tree-lined Lake Avenue offer a popular place for family gatherings and community festivals.

History buffs can find a wealth of information at the Pony Express Station and the Gothenburg Historical Museum. Historic homes grace the streetscape of-fering a picture of various architectural styles.

Recreation opportunities abound. Whether its tennis, volleyball, baseball, swim-ming, water sports, hunting or fishing, you can find it in

Gothenburg. White tailed and mule deer and elk can be found throughout the valley, along with pheasants, wild turkeys, doves, quail, ducks and geese.

Water sports are popular with tubing and canoeing on the Platte River. On Jeffrey, Midway and Johnson Lakes — each only 20 minutes from Gothenburg — sailing, power boating, water skiing and fishing fill summer days with fun.

Amateur or pro, you can golf at a nationally ranked 18-hole public course, Wild Horse Golf Club.

Cowboy hats and boots are also a regular sight at the annual July rodeo and on summer weekends.

Pony Express StationsGothenburg is home to

two Pony Express Stations. The Midway, on its original ranch site south of Gothen-burg, is open to the public on request during the sum-mer. The Sam Machette Sta-tion, located in Ehmen Park at 15th and Lake Avenue, was used as an early trad-ing post/ranch house, just southwest of Gothenburg near Fort McPherson. The station was moved from its original site and rebuilt in the park in 1931 to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

This station, opened in 1954 to visitors, continues to welcome travelers from April 1 through October 31. A guide is on staff to tell the

story of the brave riders who carried the mail 2,000 miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, from May 1860 to October 1861.

In August 1992, the Ne-braska Legislature designat-ed Gothenburg as the Pony Express Capital of Nebraska after almost 40 years of promoting the history of the Pony Express.

Gothenburg Historical Museum

Located across the street from the Pony Express Station museum, the Go-thenburg Historical Museum offers interesting displays of the Union Pacific Railroad as it expanded westward; the power plant constructed in

1891 to generate electricity for new industry and settle-ment of the town; German and Swedish settlers as they brought their businesses and families to live in a new fledgling community. It of-fers a chance to glimpse the colorful times of long ago.

The museum is open May through September.

Swedish CrossesFor over a century, the

three markers in the Swed-ish Crosses Cemetery have stood as a lasting symbol of Gothenburg’s Swedish heritage. These unusual and artistic grave markers, wrought in Swedish steel by a loving grandfather, denote the graves of three children on a prairie homestead that is now part of pioneer his-tory.

Lake HelenLake Helen was created in

the early 1890s when a 12-mile canal was dug to allow water from the Platte River to fill a dammed canyon and create a reservoir. Origi-nally, the area supported an electricity plant that brought industry to the area. Unfor-tunately, the money panic of 1893 ended the boom days, leaving a large lake, a pow-erhouse and a downtown of substantial brick buildings.

The lake was used to pro-vide water for irrigation to a community that relied on

area agriculture to sustain it. In 2014, Lake Helen was drained and renovated. Today, the lake provides a scenic recreation area excel-lent for fishing and features a 2.5-mile exercise trail. City officials continue to work toward upgraded facilities at the lake through a master plan completed in 2016.

Sun Theatre The Sun Theatre in Go-

thenburg was built and used as an opera house from 1909 until 1926. Back in 1927, children could enjoy a silent movie accompanied by an orchestra for 10 cents (adults had to pay 20 cents). The Community Playhouse, a nonprofit organization formed in 1968, purchased the Sun Theatre in 1983 following a successful fund

drive to “Save the Sun.” Since then, the theatre has offered both live produc-tions and cinema entertain-ment.

The continuous effort to upgrade the theatre has been supported by many. The efforts have included the neon lights on the new façade, a remodeled conces-sion area and most recently the installation of the digital projection system complete with a 7.1 Dolby surround sound system, new stage curtains, acoustical wall curtains, a remodeled stage front and a new ultra bright cinema screen. The latest project provided for 260 new, more comfortable seats. The best thing about the theatre is its afford-ability, and you’re always greeted by a smiling, friend-ly volunteer.

Wild Horse Golf CourseResidents and visitors who

like to relax and enjoy golf choose to play at the pub-lic 18-hole Wild Horse Golf Club just north of Gothen-burg. Opened in 1999, it is a links course bordered by thick native grasses. The fairways are wide, but lots of virgin sandhill sand traps

help increase your handi-cap.

“Golf Digest” rated this public course third in the nation on its list of best affordable new courses in 1999. In 2004, Golf Week magazine ranked Wild Horse the 19th best modern course (any course built after 1960) in the nation and in 2007 it was the No. 1 U.S. course under $50, accord-ing to “Golf Magazine.” Each year it receives acclaim from golf reviewers and enthusi-asts from around the world.

In the spring of 2016, Wild Horse opened two four-bedroom cabins allowing golfers to stay and play. The cabins have been a popular addition, staying booked through their first season.

Sod House MuseumThis memorial to the first

settlers in the area features a barn, sod house, windmills and life-sized barbed wire sculptures. Located behind the barn, which is filled with memorabilia and photo-graphs, the sod house is a replica of the early homes with sparse interior reflect-ing the hard times faced by pioneer families.

Helping You Design Yourdreams

Well preserved Victori-ans, compact bungalows, contemporary ranch-style houses and stately two-story homes are graciously mixed and blended through-out Gothenburg’s residential areas. Gothenburg – a city for families and people look-ing for a home.

Purchasing an Existing Home

Most homes close to the downtown district and along Lake Avenue (one of the most beautiful “main streets” in America) are 70+ years old. The growth in Go-thenburg has been mostly to the north and northeast. New homes are also being built at Wild Horse Golf Club (north and west of town). Homes there will occasional-ly be available. Home prices

range from $20,000 to $350,000 although most are priced $50,000 to $200,000. They vary in age from new to 100+ years. Realtors listed in the directory can be contacted.

Building New HomesA number of vacant lots

are available around the community and are priced between $15,000 and $30,000. A tract of land in the northeast part of town has recently been devel-oped with infrastructure in place. Lots range from $25,000 to $35,000. Six spec homes were completed on lots owned by the Redevel-opment Authority in 2016. To date, five have been sold with one still available. Four of the six spec homes had buyers verbally agree to

purchase before construc-tion was completed. Lots at Wild Horse Golf Club are available for $20, 000 to 40,000. For those inter-ested in “loft-style” living in

a downtown environment, two-story buildings down-town are sometimes avail-able for sale and would be suitable for renovating into single-family homes.

The mission of Gothen-burg Public Schools, in conjunction with the entire community, is to prepare all students within a positive, innovative, environment to be lifelong learners for the 21st century. Gothenburg Public Schools are fully ac-credited through the state of Nebraska and the North Central Association.

The school district boasts many fine accomplishments including the completion of a $1.1 million renova-tion project of the cafeteria, kitchen and concession area. In 2004, the $12.3 million junior senior high school facility was complet-ed and opened for classes. A state-of-the-art track and field complex was finished in 2006 with the help of

$100,000 from private dona-tions. Each May, a Junior High State Championship Meet is hosted on the track.

The more than two-thirds of the students in grades 7-12 participate in at least one of the 20-plus activities offered, excelling in many areas other than sports, such as speech, vocal and instrumental music, FFA and art. Small class sizes enhance the educational needs of all students. An abundance of computer labs provide each student with access to the latest technology.

In 2016, the district added a highly successful school-based preschool for stu-dents who may not other-wise get an early start in the classroom.

Technology is available in all classrooms through the use of tablets, laptops and desktop computers and all students in grades 7-12 use Chromebooks as part of the one-to-one initiative. ACT test scores are consis-tently above both state and national averages and more than 85% of students go on to post-secondary educa-

tion. Gothenburg teachers are dedicated profession-als who encourage, lead, stimulate and influence the students.

Gothenburg is a city where children learn, grow and go on to expand their knowledge and become contributing members of the community.

Gothenburg, NE

Gothenburg, NE

Lake Helen gave Gothen-burg its lifeblood with the construction of a power-house and water wheel for electricity and irrigation, as well as the industrial use that followed its creation. Al-though Gothenburg was not meant to become a large in-dustrial metropolis, it began the trip down the road to what we’ve become today. That lifeline has branched out into value-added agri-cultural industries that have flourished.

In 1986, local citizens passed a half-cent sales tax for economic develop-ment that has been used to attract new business and industry and expand exist-ing business and industry. The funding source helped create over 500 jobs. This resident action provides Gothenburg with a fund-ing mechanism that can be leveraged many times over. The impact of this action on the economic well-being of the community will be felt for years to come.

The recruitment of the Frito-Lay corn gathering facility and the Monsanto Water Utilization Learning Center and Seed Research, in addition to manufactur-ers like Baldwin Filters and Parker Tech Seals, has put Gothenburg in another industrial boom period.

Farming, ranching, manu-facturing, retail sales and tourism are the primary economic activities of the area. By virtue of its location in the Platte River Valley, agriculture is the major eco-nomic factor for the com-munities in the county. With the benefit of irrigation, it is not uncommon for the area to produce eight tons of al-falfa or 225 bushels of corn or 76 bushels of soybeans per acre.

Major manufacturers and industries in Gothenburg include:

Baldwin FiltersRecruited in 1990-91,

Baldwin Filters was the first recruitment project to use the sales tax money desig-nated for economic devel-opment. The plant has ap-proximately 140 employees who manufacture air filters for motor vehicles.

Parker Tech SealsLocating in Gothenburg

40 years ago, Parker Tech manufactures industrial seals and employs approxi-mately 70 people.

Frito-LayAfter a five-year recruit-

ment process, Gothenburg became the home for Frito-Lay’s corn gathering facility. It handles between 11 mil-

lion and 12 million bushels of food-grade corn per year. In the United States there are only two such facilities: one in Champaign, Illinois, and the other in Gothen-burg, Nebraska. If you eat a corn chip or Dorito chip west of the Mississippi, it was more than likely pro-duced by an area farmer and came from Gothen-burg’s Frito-Lay.

MonsantoIn 2008, Monsanto an-

nounced it was building a $6 million learning facility and corn breeding station here in Gothenburg. The 324-acre research farm enables the center to put its focus on technologies, corn breeding and agronomic practices to address water management in crop production. Over 4,000 growers, crop consul-tants, water policy makers, trade groups, politicians, media, local youth and investors have visited the center coming from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Finland, Spain, India, Australia, Japan, Israel, Sri Lanka, Swit-zerland, South Africa, Philip-pines, Kenya and China.

Nebraska Salt & GrainThis family-owned truck-

ing business is the largest hopper-bottom trucking firm in the state of Nebraska hauling grain, rock and road salt. It also stores and trans-ports American Popcorn – Jolly Time and Con-Agra – Act II.

Dayton Phoenix GroupRecruited in 2010, Dayton

Phoenix Group has rail-road contracts to work on fans, HVAC units in diesel engines, as well as motor re-winding. With the business demands, it has increased its number of employees to 35.

Dawson Tire & WheelDawson Tire & Wheel is

North America’s premier supplier of tires, wheels and assemblies for agricul-tural applications. It has also designed and created a new species of no-flat pivot tires called the RhinoGator®,

18 BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

a roto-molded tire made under controlled conditions right here in the USA, using specially formulated resins, including a percentage of corn-based plastic. This company has its roots here in Gothenburg selling tires around the world. Dawson Tire & Wheel employs 34 at its Gothenburg location.

Other major non-manu-

facturing employers are:

Gothenburg HealthThis is a critical access

hospital with 80+ employ-ees. Recent renovations and expansions include a new $3.2 million doctor’s clinic opened in January 2012, a new patient wing opened at the end of 2016 and coming soon, a YMCA.

Pony Express ChevroletThe dealership sells an

average of 1,300 cars each year. The $2 million to $2.5

million in car sales per month impacts our city sales tax.

Gothenburg Public SchoolThe student/teacher ratio

is 13-to-1 in the elementary level and 13.5-to-1 at the secondary level, affording teachers and students ad-vantages that benefit their education.

Gothenburg residents have a history of going the extra mile to assure our community remains a top-notch city for both economy and residents.

GIC — Gothenburg Improvement Company

The Gothenburg Improve-ment Company was estab-lished in 1961 beginning an organized effort to recruit businesses and people to our community. GIC plays a vital role in securing the future of Gothenburg. This volunteer organization depends on the continued dedication of its stockhold-ers and their willingness to freely give of their time, talents and financial re-sources. Their primary goal is to improve and preserve the quality of life that makes Gothenburg the place we all call home.

LOL — Livin’ Out LoudLivin’ Out Loud was cre-

ated out of a vision from Gothenburg community members who asked, “Why not?” If folks could close off streets for a block party, why couldn’t they close off streets to glorify Christ? In 2013, the first community-wide event took place in downtown Gothenburg with over 450 attendees. From

there, the vision grew to include worship bands and speakers all in the name of the One Who Saves. In August 2013, Livin’ Out Loud put on the first community-wide outdoor free concert featuring Tenth Avenue North and had over 3,500 attendees. In 2016, the fea-tured band was the News-boys, bringing an estimated 10,000 to celebrate. Livin’ Out Loud’s focus is to help unify the body of Christ, in corporate praise, and reach out to those who have not heard the gospel.

The CenterThe Center was a collab-

orative vision that included community, education, recreation and wellness. Through a cooperation between many Gothenburg entities, the community was able to secure a partner-ship with the YMCA of the Prairie in November 2016. The partnership will expand the original view of The Center into a world-class opportunity to unify the community with space for educational opportunities, a gathering area for groups and individuals of all ages and socio-economic status and programming that will take a holistic approach to prevention and wellness.

Sun Theatre The Commu-

nity Playhouse, a nonprofit organi-zation, purchased the Sun Theatre in 1983 follow-ing a successful fund drive to “Save the Sun.” The continuous effort to upgrade the theatre has been supported by many. Efforts have included the neon lights on the new façade, a remodeled concession area, installation of the digital projection system complete with a 7.1 Dolby surround sound system, new stage curtains, acousti-cal wall curtains, a remod-eled stage front, a new cinema screen and 260 new, more comfortable seats. Each weekend, community volunteers take turns to run the theatre.

The Backpack ProgramThe Backpack Program

launched in Nebraska and Iowa in 2006. It helps families that are struggling to make ends meet. The fact that one in five kids

in Nebraska is at risk for hunger is what prompted a couple from Gothenburg to begin the program here. Backpacks are filled at the American Lutheran Church with non-perishable goods and sent home on week-ends with elementary aged children whose families have signed up for the pro-gram. Currently, there are 30-35 families utilizing the program each week. This program is entirely run by volunteers and donations.
