The encounter between Jesus and the rich young man that we hear about today is actually found in all three “Synoptic” (meaning similar) Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Here Jesus said something pretty impossible, at least on the surface: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the king- dom of God.” We all know that it is impossible to get a camel through the eye of a sewing needle. Actually, how many of us would even attempt to try? But this really is not what Jesus was speaking of. If we lived in Jerusalem during our Lord’s time, we would know that the “eye of the needle” Jesus was speaking of is actually a small gate in Jerusalem which opened up after the main gate was closed for the night (see picture). The only possible way you could get a camel through the smaller gate was to remove all your belongings off the camel prior to going through. By using this expression, Jesus is highlighting a different concept around the Bibli- cal idea that riches reflect God’s blessings - what we would call today the Gospel of Prosperity. Instead, Jesus' teaching associates divine blessings, and life with servanthood, and giving to the poor. CHAPLAIN TO VISIT Lydia Summerville, the chaplain at Bethesda Regional Health Centre and Bethesda Place, will do a brief presen-tation at both services next Sunday, Oct. 21. We look for-ward to having her in our midst.

YOUNG ADULTS NIGHT OUT

The Young Adults will meet tomorrow night, Monday, October 15, 7:00 pm at church. Come for a great night of fun and fellowship with other young adults. For more details call or text Jacob Tamlin, 204-381-8966.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed to help in the sound booth during the traditional service. Volunteers are also needed to help with occasional services at the care homes. Giving the gift of your time, skill and experience as a volunteer can help you reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. The Next Care Home service is October 28 @ Wood-haven at 9:30 am. Please contact Susan Nickel, 204-371-4895, or the church office if you can help out.

“POP BUY” The Scouts will be taking orders for popcorn in between services today. This is an important fundraiser for Scouts as it supports the

individual members in all their scouting activities and adventures. The Scouts are also hosting the Coffee Hour following the 9:25 am service. Be sure to “Pop” on “Buy,” sample some popcorn while you place your order, and enjoy a time of fellowship over coffee and cookies. This is also a great opportunity to meet those involved in the pro-gram.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE

On Sunday, November 4, All Saints Day, we will be celebrating the lives of saints who have gone before us. In the first stage of the celebration we will light candles for all those who have been

buried through the ministry of St. Paul’s in the past year. In the second stage of the liturgy, we may light a candle to commemorate the life of anyone who has left a hole in our lives by their death. There will be one service only, at 10:00 am. If you would like to participate in this special service by lighting a candle, please fill out the form included in this bulletin. Drop it in the collection plate or bring it to the church office by Sunday, October 28.

WELCOME VISITORS If you are a visitor to our church today, we invite you to sign the guest book located in the narthex. Welcome here. May you be blessed as you worship with us.

THANK YOU DEPARTMENT

• Thank you to all who assisted with the service today.

GREETING: P. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: L. Let us pray together: All. Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us your gift of faith that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what lies ahead, we may follow the way of your commandments and receive the crown of everlasting joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

GOD’S WORD: Reader Cliff Freund

↓ FIRST READING: Hebrews 4:12-16

12 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weak-nesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 90:12-17 (congregation reads bold parts)

L. 12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. C.

13 Turn, O LORD! How long?

Have compassion on your servants! L. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

C. 15 Make us glad for as many days

as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. L. 16 Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. C.

17 Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us,

and prosper for us the work of our hands— O prosper the work of our hands!

↑ Gospel Acclamation: “Alleluia” (sung) - p. 205 Alleluia! Lord and Savior, open now your saving word. Let it burn like fire within us; speak until our hearts are stirred. Alleluia! Lord, we sing, for the good news that you bring.

HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 10:17-31

Congregational response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord.

17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 18Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ’ 20He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ 21Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ 22When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ 24And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ 26They were greatly astounded and said to one another, ‘Then who can be saved?’ 27Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.’ 28 Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we have left every-thing and followed you.’ 29Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecu-tions—and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’

L. The Gospel of the Lord.

C. Praise to you, O Christ.
