Spring has finally sprung! My family and I have been taking advantage of the cool Spring evenings and doing much more outdoor family-oriented activities such as cycling, frequently picnicking at the many beautiful parks the Garden City has to offer and having mid-week BBQs. I must admit, I feel more refreshed, revitalized and my mood has lightened.

In this issue, on page 12 we focus on careers options that you may have not thought of and in keeping with unique careers, in Al Majlis we caught up with charismatic furniture designer, Khalid Shafar who tells us how his approach to furniture design encompasses his personal expression of form, movement, and in particular, ‘the tale’ of objects.

Ladies, after the long winter season, spring is a time for rejuvenation. Take a look at our top affordable home remedies to blossoming beauty this season. Don’t worry men, we didn’t forget about you. We take a look at some fast-paced outdoor adventures in and around Al Ain before the sweltering desert heat takes over.

The good folks of Al Ain, soon I’ll be embarking on an exciting adventure, and on that note, I bid you farewell.

So to all our readers, until next time, happy reading!

A 70-year-old Algerian woman returned from the dead minutes after mourners placed her in the grave. When one of the mourners uncovered her face to read the final Qur’an verse, the woman opened her eyes and took a breath. In a fit of terror, most of the mourners fled while a handful of religious men remained at the cemetery and called people back to announce that the woman was still alive. The old lady was lifted out of the grave and carried back home where she was welcomed with a celebration.

HCT Celebrates 25 Years with 25 Days of Service

Amazing Mirror Maze At Dubai Dolphinarium

The UAE will be offering a new tourist attraction for its visitors as it prepares to open an exclusive hunting resort near

Al Ain in September. The Barari Hunting Resort, owned by Abu-Dhabi based

Morouj Hotels and Resorts will offer its guests the opportunity to hunt only legally allowed animals and will possibly feature

bird hunting as well. The resort will operate on seasonal basis

and the cost of a one-night stay inclusive of a hunting excursion

is expected to cost over AED10000.

The Al Ain Colleges (AAC) celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Higher Colleges of Technology with 25 days of “Act of Kindness and Service.” The campaign kicked off on 25 March at Al Ain Women’s College with female students from the Community Service Department under the initiative “Feed a Worker Campaign” donated healthy hot meals to workers around the city.

The aim for the 25 days of service is to thank the Al Ain community for 25 years of support and to encourage other Al Ain organizations to “Pay it Forward.” Dr.

Dubai Dolphinarium is delighted to announce the opening of the country’s unique mirror maze in this month. The dizzying maze has a visual space of over 10000 square feet with a bewildering network of endless corridors that is achieved by a complex arrangement of reflecting glass. The mirror maze housed in an under-the-sea themed hall will challenge visitors to find their way through the baffling labyrinth by relying on their sense of touch and adventure.

Neil Garrod, Director of Al Ain Colleges explained “I really wanted to try to develop something innovative which reflected what I consider to be the essential rationale of HCT, particularly in Al Ain, because it’s an integral part of the community, so it’s a bit more than a party but it’s also demonstrating what we consider to be important.”

As part of the 25 days of service, teams of Al Ain College students, staff and alumni will go around the Garden City helping people, animals, cleaning up the desert, visiting the sick and elderly as well as supporting community service organizations.

Ms. Agnes Nathaniel, a proud Head Teacher of Zakher Private School commented "Now-a-days everything goes beyond textbooks, so this is a way for children to do things in practical rather than stick to their textbooks".

Zakher Private School places high value on creativity and the celebration of creative arts is clearly visible.

Ainawais Edge Closer to Pro League title

Zaid Ennaba Crowned Squash Champion!

Volleyball Championship Cancelled

Al Ain University's Zaid Ennaba clinched a 3-2 victory after defeating Bilal Khan in the final match of the three-day squash tournament held at Al Ain Rotana's Leisure and Fitness Club Bodylines, last week.

This year’s tournament was especially impressive because there was an increase of talented players compared to the previous year's competitions. Mr Ayman Gharib commented "We are always keen to create such tournaments, [and] thrilled to see participants competing in the squash tournaments along with the same participants that competed in the past years.”

Al Ain International School held a two-day inter-house Swimming Gala last week. Students excelled in showing off their talents in backstroke and front crawl races, enthralling both parents and teachers with their exceptional performances.

Students in Key Stages 1 and 2 competed in their house teams with the total points scored added together for an overall house team. Less than 10 points separated the first three houses, with Foxes coming out on top, just ahead of the Camels, Salukis and Falcons.

The 32nd GCC Men Clubs’ Volleyball Championship that would have been hosted at Al Ain Club has been cancelled due to a dispute that arose prior to the event between the organizing committee of Volleyball games in the GCC and the UAE Volleyball Federation. The technical committee off the GCC organizing committee prevented the move of two players from Al Nasr and Al Wasl to Al Ain and Al Shabab to play in this championship.

During a press conference held at Danat Al Ain Resort, HE Yusuf Mahmoud Al Mulla, President of the UAE Volleyball Federation announced that none of the of the UAE clubs will be participating in any championships held under the GCC organizing committee of Volleyball.

Al Ain moved 16 points clear at the top of the Pro League last week after clinching a 2-1 win over Al Shabab at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium.

Al Ain went into the match with confidence high but were playing without Captain Hilal Saeed, Mirel Radoi, Omar Abulrahman, Asamoah Gyan and Jires Kembo Ekoko.

The first half of the game started tensely as both sides struggled to find their form, and the first half ended goalless. In the second half, Al Shabab looked like they may have found their feet again when the Brazilian striker, Luiz Henrique da Silva scored a free kick.

The one goal in the second half by Al Shabab put instant pressure on Al Ain who fought back hard with Australian striker Alex Brosque grabbing an equalizer at the 77th minute of the game. 81 minutes in, the second goal scored by 18-year-old striker Yousuf Ahmed Mousa, put the Garden City ahead again. With seven games remaining to play, Al Ain is closer to yet another successive title.

The win puts Al Ain 5 points ahead of second place Al Ahli and sees Al Shabab’s title hopes all but extinguished as they slide down to seventh place.

you brimming with career enthusiasm all over again.

She loves her job and tells us, “The best thing about my job is that I get to do the one thing I love – talk.” Celebrity gossip, great music and an infectious sense of humor help make her daily show a huge success. A good RJ has to be able to bring up social issues and become a platform for the public. Being able to converse freely and having great taste in music are key skills you need if you want to be successful in this career. If getting all dolled up for weddings and parties is your thing, why not consider making it your career choice? Ex air-hosteess Shaziaa Shiraz decided to do just that after being perplexed by a medical condition that meant she could no longer fly. Having always been artistic, she felt it was the ideal career to feed her artsy persona. “Your creative side is always challenged and derives satisfaction from the result of making people look beautiful and giving them a definite sense of confidence.” While painting faces may not be everyone’s go to career option, it really is a creative avenue and, with the right clients, can be extremely lucrative.

Skills Needed: Artistic, flexible, creative and a good awareness of the latest fashion trends. Not for: Those of us who still think stick men are perfectly acceptable representations of people!

Cooking is another career choice if you’re a budding Nigella or a wanna-be Jamie Oliver! Sailesh Balan, Executive Chef at Al Ain’s Ayla Hotel has almost 20 years of culinary experience but explains that his choice of career wasn’t always so well respected. “When I began my career, deciding to become a chef needed quite an explanation. These days, however, the reaction has changed and people are really impressed when I tell them what I do.” With the UAE having a flourishing tourism industry, chefs are always in demand here as world-class restaurants and top hotels want to continually offer their patrons something new.

Skills Needed: A great sense of taste, creativity, hardworking and passionate! Not for: Those who can’t stand the heat!

So whether music, food, art or fashion is your passion, don’t be afraid to take that step down the road less travelled. You

PAINTBALLThere’s nothing like a bit of running around with a gun firing colored pellets at your friends to get the working week out of your system. Even better if you can wangle a game with your boss! All jokes aside, Al Ain Paintball is a great place to head down to these cooler evenings, and the stunning backdrop of nothing but sand dunes and a huge Arabian sunset are just the icing on the cake.

Get Your Adventure OnQuick! Time is running out before the weather goes back to crazy

temperatures and we are all sent scurrying to the nearest room boasting a/c. It’s true that summer in the UAE is a bit of a furnace and probably more of

a time for box sets and cookery classes than outdoor adventures. That’s why we’re urging you to get out there and enjoy the spring weather while

you still can. There’s so much to do, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

QUAD-BIKING Al Ain is perfect for a spot of quad biking and you can rent a bike from countless of smaller stores located close to the dunes. Zoom over the sand, race your friends and or sign up with a tour group for some top tips from a pro! Either way, you’ll have a blast! Just don’t go too fast, these machines are not toys!

KARTINGPop out to Al Ain Raceway for a karting experience with a difference. You can sign up for an arrive and drive session where you’ll do exactly that – all racing gear, safety equipment and a detailed safety briefing will be provided before you climb into your car and blast around the top of the range track.

SANDBOARDINGIf you haven’t given sandboarding a try yet now is your chance. It takes a bit of patience and a lot of starting and stopping before you get the hang of it but stick with it. After a bit of practice, some balancing skills and a stroke of luck, you’ll be hurtling down the dunes at top speeds – just keep your mouth closed otherwise you could be feasting on sand for dinner.

SKYDIVINGFor those of you seeking the ultimate thrill, a trip to SkyDive Dubai is a must. Located on the Al Ain-Dubai highway, the company’s desert drop zone rewards divers with some truly fantastic views over the burnt orange dunes, after the scary act of actually jumping out of a plane that is! This one isn’t for the faint-hearted but if you’re looking for an adventure with memories that will last a lifetime then Skydiving is the way to go.

In my imagination I was enroute to Ras Al Khor, to meet charismatic Emirati designer Khalid Shafar. In reality, he was at his gallery and I was in the comfort of my manager’s office having a phone interview. In my fantasy, I imagined I was in the company of quintessential Khalid admiring the stripped-

back concrete floors and white walls, and quirky designs which have made him internationally renowned.

Born and raised in Dubai, looking back at what he always enjoyed, even as a child, Khalid realized that he had a deep interest in art. At school “I was very good in my art classes and preferred drawing lessons to football.” Khalid enrolled for a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Interior Design at the American University of Dubai. The furniture design course within this discipline was his defining moment because that’s when he realized “I want to be a furniture designer not an interior designer.” After graduating, he was uncertain about his future and explains, “I wasn’t sure if an international company would accept a local designer”, so he enrolled for a Bachelors in Business Administration.

Khalid started his career in marketing and communications and quickly moved up the corporate ladder. After eight years, Shafar decided to relinquish his career to follow his design destiny. This destiny required him to move to New Zealand to further his education, skills and expertise. He completed a one year woodwork course and stayed for a further two years to explore business opportunities between New Zealand and Dubai. Last year Khalid could no longer resist the buzz and energy of Dubai, so he moved permanently to Dubai and focus on expanding his business.Khalid’s designs combine contemporary taste with a distinct Emirati influence. He confesses that he draws inspiration from his “own stories, culture and childhood. At the moment I’m digging deeper on our roots and culture.” Shafar’s Auction coffee table, one of the five pieces that makes up his latest collection is a recollection of his childhood. • Build your confidence because without it, you can’t continue or grow.

• Patience is important.

• Think local but act global.

LIFE LESSONS

Curious to know about his future plans, Shafar aspires to showcase his work in Milan, Sydney and Tokyo. Although I’ve only briefly met Khalid, one of UAE’s most talented designer, and in total abscence, I know this much is true: In my imagination our meeting would be awe-inspiring, and though in reality, it was not short of it.

Khalid’s telling tales will continue but before we ended our conversation, I asked him to share some of his wisdom and knowledge….

with an oversize sack on their heads filled with fabric, toys and other valuables announcing their arrival with cries of ‘lelam, lelam’, the Malayalam word for auction. The Auction coffee table consists of a large sack-shaped fabric base with a marble top. The beauty of this design is that the sack can be untied to reveal a hollow interior which can be used as a compartment. For Shafar, it’s all about telling stories, therefore The Trap is inspired by the fishing trap that fishermen use and The Lazy Fold sofa is a contemporary sofa made with natural cotton which is still a standard feature in the cushions of the majlis (Arabic cushions). The Flip lounge chair has a back that can be flipped so that “you can still have an armchair but you can cross your legs on the chair exactly the same way you sit on the floor.”

Shafar aims “too preserve the Emirati culture in the contemporary way and to define something that can be called in the future, Emirati design.” His vision is to become a “reference point for researchers and historians” who study Emirati designs.

Khalid successfully launched two collections and is currently working on his 2014 collection which he plans to unveil in November. He also worked on a number of new collaborative projects for the 2013 Design Days Dubai which took place in March. Some of these collaborations are with the prestigious French furniture company Moissonieur, Hong Kong-based carpet and rug company, Tai Ping and Beirut-based, Carwan Gallery. Khalid is also very proud to be one of the four designers selected to take part in an initiative organized by Dubai Culture Authorities in collaboration with Tashkeel and Creative Dialogue Association based in Barcelona. The initiative aimed to promote intercultural exchange between local and international designers included trips to London and Barcelona where he attended workshops. At the end of the program the designers produced a piece based on their experiences and Khalid planned to showcase his piece at Design Days Dubai. As if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he also helped design a home-grown café, his very first design consultancy project.

There’s been a bit of a buzz in the community recently as the air has filled with murmurs about the opening of Brighton College this coming September. My personal interest peaked when a good friend couldn’t help herself from singing the praises of the school. After that, I

decided to see what all the fuss was about by arranging a chat with the school’s Head Master, Mr. Alun Yorath.

By Khudayja Saloojee

A Bright Future At Brighton College

In truth, I was expecting to meet a quiet, stern looking man but, in reality, Mr. Yorath has a very gregarious and charismatic personality. Having had extensive experience in teaching and leadership positions across various prestigious private schools in the UK, Alun and his family have spent the last four years in the capital of the UAE where he was a founding member of Brighton College Abu Dhabi, Head of the Senior School and Vice-Principal.

Following the success of Brighton College in Abu Dhabi, the company decided to open another branch right here in the Garden City and Mr. Yorath jumped at the chance of moving to somewhere smaller and greener.

Characterizing the college as a family-orientated place with a caring atmosphere, Mr. Yorath explained the setup to me. Classes from FS1-Year 4 are co-ed whilst Year 5 to Year 9 pupils are enrolled in the Boys’ or Girls’ School. At present, classes are only offered up to

with an enjoyable experience

education

Page 19: The Source Magazine - Issue 44 - English

Year 9 but by 2014, Year 10 will be functional and senior years will be rolled out over successive years.

I was interested in the caliber of teachers who will help develop children, as Brighton so proudly announces, into critical thinkers and problem-solvers who are adequately prepared for their future. Mr. Yorath explained the recruitment process “With the exception of Arabic staff, teachers must all have recent British Curriculum experience and their teaching qualifications must be recognized in the UK.” Brighton places great value on outstanding teachers and the school has recruited an eclectic staff to provide its pupils with a varied and rich learning environment. Teachers have been headhunted from leading UK Private Schools and from top British Curriculum Schools throughout the Far East.

The Brighton College UK curriculum will be taught alongside Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies. When it comes to the Arabic staff, they initially have to meet ADEC’s requirements. Next, their ability to teach is assessed by Mr. Fahim Al Khumaissi, Head of Community Relations at Brighton College where teachers must show a strong understanding of the unique Brighton brand and vision.

I was so caught up with teacher qualifications that I almost forgot to ask about the facilities! Mr. Yorath wasn’t about to let that happen however and proudly produced an artist’s impression of the school. Located in Zakher, the college is situated on a 28-acre campus and is housed in a series of buildings set in generous landscaping and incorporating a plethora of both learning and playing facilities. The school also boasts specialist facilities such as a fixed 450-capacity auditorium, a shaded swimming pool, sports hall, two multi-surface tennis, basketball and netball courts and a full size soccer pitch surrounded by a 400m running track. There is also a fully-equipped catered kitchen with two dining halls situated on either side of the impressive school theatre.

The classroom facilities appear to be top rate with each classroom having an HD Plasma Touch screen installed and teachers being given the option to use either MAC or PC software. Teachers can also use tablets if they wish or, if they prefer to teach their ICT lessons in their classroom instead of the ICT lab, they have the option to “sign out a trolley’s worth of laptops or tablets.”

Little Darlings And The DIRHAMThey say that the best way of teaching a child anything

in life is through example and as parents we are on the front lines of this responsibility. It’s important that parents make financial lessons a priority to teach children the value of money.

If you are anything like my wife and I, then you are still learning how to better manage your finances and have no doubt made a few mistakes on route to financial freedom. One of the best things you can do for your children is teaching them financial responsibility early in life. This important appreciation of what makes our world go round is essential in preparing them for solid financial futures.

These three crucial steps will help children comprehend the value of every single Dirham.

1. Make them work for it. Children discover all too quickly the wonders of money once they realize it can buy toys, treats and anything else they may desire. Unfortunately they will never learn to value money until they have worked for it. If kids consistently receive money simply by asking for it, they will squander it just as carelessly as the toys they throw away. Do not become your child’s money tree or magical ATM, rather make them work for and earn the money you give them.

2. Create a challenging and fun work environment. As much as you want your children to understand that money is earned, the last thing you want is for them to hate working for it. Make their chores fun by incorporating things such as music or try working with them and engaging in light conversation while getting the job done. Challenge them, their friends or siblings to a race in completing the task and reward them for a job well done.

3. Reward and penalize them. Without proper supervision, children will more often than not, try to get away with delivering substandard results. This can easily be avoided via a reward and penalty system. Reward them for doing an exceptional job with a bonus and penalize them for poor effort by reducing their expected earnings. In this way they will learn that simply going through the motions of a particular task is not enough and that the quality of work is equally important.

There is something else I would like to share with our readers that my wife and I have introduced with our two boys. We have given them both three separate savings banks and labeled them as follows:

1. Savings. 2. Spending. 3. Charity

The Savings bank is for long-term target savings that help them understand the time frames involved with saving

for something very big and desirable.

The Spending bank is for short-term savings and designed to allot them the pleasure of using the money they earned on a weekly basis.

The Charity bank is also a long-term savings vehicle that teaches them humility and the powerful feeling of gratification associated with sharing ones wealth with those among us who are much less fortunate.

Be proactive and get your kids started early in the appreciation and understanding of their personal

finances, and you will have given them a gift that will benefit them for the rest of their

lives.

So, what are you waiting for? Get them working, saving

and most important of all, happily spending in a more responsible and meaningful way!

LaughOne evening, slumped on the couch I was drifting

into a forlorn daydream when I was startled by the sound of roaring laughter from my daughter. It was so contagious that I immediately started to laugh. That laughing immediately lightened my mood, lifted my

spirits, helped me to relax and feel revitalized.

When laughter is shared, it creates stronger bonds and increases intimacy. Laughter, it turns out, almost rivals exercise when it comes to health benefits and brain-boosting powers. Humor and laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your energy levels and the best part of it all is that this priceless cure is fun and free.

Laughter is the best medicineLaughter is a powerful cure for stress, pain and conflict. Nothing works faster than a good laugh to bring your body and mind back into balance, thus having the power to heal and renew. It lightens your burdens, inspires hope, and keeps you grounded, focused and alert.

Laughter gives you a positive outlookHumor shifts perspective and helps you keep a positive and optimistic outlook through difficult situations. A laugh also gives you the courage and strength to continue through the most difficult of times, giving you a renewed sense of hope and meaning.

Laugh moreLaughing is intrinsic and a natural part of life. Babies begin smiling during their first weeks of life and laugh out loudly within months of being born. I grew up in a household where laughter was a common sound, and in my home laughter is the fabric of our life.

Here are some simple ways to lighten up.

Start with a smile because it’s the beginning of laughter and it’s infectious.

When you have negative thoughts, a good antidote is to keep your sense of humor and write down a list of all the things you’ve been blessed with in your life.

When you hear laughter, seek it out and ask people to share their jokes with you. Most often people are happy to share the joke because it gives them the opportunity to laugh again.

Spend time with positive people who laugh easily at themselves and at life’s absurdities.

Don’t start out a conversation with negativity, bring humor into the conversation. Ask people, “What’s the funniest that happened to you today?”

See the lighter side of lifeYesterday I wrote an article on a topic that I later discovered a colleague had already written. While chatting about some trivial issue, I proudly announced the topic of my completed article and she responded with a chortle and pointed out that “obviously you don’t read the magazine” to which I retorted “I guess you found me out.” Yes, I wasted valuable time but instead of berating myself, we just had a good hearty laugh. One essential characteristic that helps us laugh is not taking ourselves seriously.

Here are some ways to help you see the funny side of life

Laugh at yourself and share your quirky moments with friends and colleagues.

Instead of griping about a bad situation, find the humor and uncover the absurdity. It’ll help lighten your mood and of those around you.

Deal with stress effectively because it’s a major hindrance to humor and laughter.

Children are the experts on taking life lightly and laughing so pay close attention and try to emulate them.

As laughter and humor become and integral part of your life, you will view the world from a more relaxed, positive, creative, joyful and balanced perspective.

There are only a few places considered in the UAE that are as enchanting as Liwa Oasis. The flame-colored sand dunes, its sprinkling of lush oases and the beautiful night skies have made it a popular weekend getaway for locals and expats alike.

Liwa Oasis is in an arched-shaped stretch of more than 150 km from east to west bordering on the edge of Saudi Arabia’s Rub’al-Khaili (Empty Quarter). It’s a belt of villages and farms with Muzayri at its center. It holds deep importance because it’s also home to the Al Nahyan and Al Maktoum families. It was historically, and remains to this day, a date-palm cultivating region for Bedouin tribes, especially the Bani Yas.

Liwa lies at the edge of the UAE’s most spectacular desert region. Locals and expats in 4 wheel-drives often go for dune-bashing or simply to camp in the area at the weekend. If you don’t have a 4X4 don’t fret, you can easily pre-arrange with a tour company. No dune-bashing is complete without a visit to the awe-inspiring 300m Moreeb Dune or Tal Mireb which is a popular spot for hill climb races. The most spectacular scenery on route from Mezair’a to the village of Hameem provides a perfect photo opportunity, or in the cooler season, to have a picnic and watch the sun go down.

An overnight desert camping experience is the ideal way to completely enjoy and appreciate the beauty and vastness of the Liwa area. It can be a truly memorable experience with miles of rolling sand dunes in the distance, the greatest area of unspoiled and uninhabited desert on the Arabian Peninsula.

ON THE WILD SIDE OF TOWN

I recently shared the pleasure of having my brother and his family swop the icy grey of the UK for the sunny blue skies of South Africa. We had an amazing time during their month long southern sojourn although their final departure call came

much too soon. On the upside, I got to show my little nephews and niece the true sense of the ‘wild’ which is always close by, in both Pretoria and Durban. It was a great adventure, especially for our little visitors who, up until this point, had only ever seen this side of life through their animated Hollywood buddies from ‘Madagascar’.

The true beauty of our adventure was the proximity of it. Experiencing the wild didn’t mean taking to the long and dusty roads of a far-away game park, nor restricting ourselves to staring at animals in the confined enclosures of a zoo. Right on our doorstep, in the middle of the Johannesburg-Pretoria complex, is the Lion Park, an eco-tourism destination that focuses on the well-being and regeneration of endangered wild dogs, rare white lions and illusive cheetahs. The Lion Park serves as a breeding ground and sanctuary for many important animal species, providing an opportunity for both local and overseas tourists to learn more about these wonderful African animals.

The feeling of being on the wild side of town was intensified by the incredible Johannesburg skyline that served as a stunning backdrop to countless zebra, giraffe, gemsbok, springbuck, blesbok and other antelope who

Page 27: The Source Magazine - Issue 44 - English

roamed freely across the large open plains as we cruised through the park on our self-drive adventure. Interestingly, we noticed that the lions are protected from one another by barriers and fences which prevent different prides from attacking one another. We were happy to see the softer side of a lioness as we caught a glimpse of her napping in the shade of a thorn tree with four adorable cubs playing at her paws! My little nephews and niece were absolutely thrilled and would have loved to take a little furry bundle home with them!

It goes without saying then that the children were in seventh heaven when we told them they’d have some playtime with the lion cubs! Lion Park affords visitors a rare opportunity to play with these furry fellows in an enclosed area, guided by experienced handlers who show you how to interact with these little creatures. ‘Precious’ is the only way to describe the look of awe on the kids’ faces as they carefully stroked the obliging cubs.

Cub World is another area where visitors can get out of the car and walk around while gazing at black and spotted leopards, servals,

jackals and hyenas. A fitting end to our trip was meeting Gambit the Giraffe from atop a platform which allowed us to reach over and touch this gentle giant while he munched away to his heart's content.

An experience that I definitely plan to earmark for the kids next visit is a guided night drive where visitors can watch the lions feeding under the spotlights of the safari vehicles. A sleepover at the Wildside Tented Accommodation would bring the

evening to the perfect close as you sit and enjoy a BBQ under the African sky all the while listening to roars of the kings of the jungle.

With the big cats taken care of, we set off for Durban for some close encounters of a scaly kind at the popular Crocworld. This park aims to connect people to nature by focusing on conservation and education. There’s a section where baby crocodiles can be held by visitors but funnily enough the kids didn’t seem quite as eager to give this a go as they had with the furry lion cubs. The best part of this visit had to be seeing Henry, a 100-year-old Nile crocodile and the oldest and heaviest in captivity. Measuring almost 5meters in length and weighing close to 1000kgs, his harem of seven wives produce about 300 baby crocs per year! Colgate was another sight to behold, at sixty-years-old he has the whitest teeth ever seen on a croc and is a great opportunity to emphasize to little ones the benefits of good oral hygiene! All the crocodiles live in ponds with beautiful, natural surrounding perfect for close-up viewing and unique photo opportunities.

A wander through the 30-hectare botanical garden bursting with indigenous trees and plants was a great way to wind up our trip to the wild and the chirping and crowing of so many different varieties of bird made for an interesting guessing game as we walked. Back at the car, exhausted and happy, the kids all fell asleep on the drive home no doubt dreaming of their fantastic walk on the wild side! Ph

HARD

HOROSCOPES

SoPhia is a compelling story about how the human spirit is able to triumphantly soar. The novel set in Johannesburg tells the story of Zarreen Kader and her abusive husband, Majid Akram Noorani. Zarreen vows not to tell her parents about her abusive marriage until the cracks begin to show and her life begins to unravel. Zarreen travels to Mauritius, where her Sufi grandfather once lived to search for answers whilst Akram faces the demons from his past. As the two stories unfold side-by-side, we see a story of courage and strength which we all too often fear to discover.

Aries is the first zodiac sign and those born under this sign are leaders and always first in line to get things going. The leadership qualities displayed by an Aries is most impressive and it’s their fearless trek into the unknown that often wins the day. Pioneers of the zodiac,

Aries are adventurers, energetic and probably the friendliest people in your neighborhood.

People born under Aries are creative and carry a positive attitude towards life. They are unafraid of stepping into new terrain and tend to be interested in business, creative arts, and planning and organization. Not keen on being restricted, Aries tend to become impatient and difficult to handle if

others don’t agree with them.

Aries are known for their bold, aggressive and courageous nature. They will not tolerate injustices and will always fight for the weak. While they have the skills to be great listeners, they often practice selective hearing, listening to things that they want to. Folks born under this sign tend to be quite impulsive perhaps due to their obstinate nature.

Aries love to socialize, go out and about and enjoy their free time. They love indulging in challenges, have a passionate love life and are known to be extremely devoted. Their optimistic and generous spirit makes them a pleasure to have around.

The great strength of an Aries is in their initiative, courage and determination. These folks love to get things going and are confident along the way. Their verve and competitive spirit add considerably to any of their endeavors.

Aries Element: FireAries Strength: leadership, passionate, adventurous, enthusiastic and courage to overcome fearAries Weakness: selfish, impatient, short-tempered, stubborn, aggressive and rebelliousLuck Color: crimson and orangeLucky Stone: coral, garnet and topazLucky Metal: ironLucky Flowers: honeysuckle and sweet pea
