Welcome to the Alresford Forum. We have changed the face of the

Forum considerably over recent months and hope that you enjoy the new additions to the magazine.

Within the pages you will now find a monthly recipe, a children’s activity corner (this month is Dinosaur month!) and an injection of humour in the regular diary entry from Hampshire Mum.

We would like to include a local walk each month and would therefore greatly appreciate submissions from our readers. Do you have a favourite local walk that you would like to share? Please send it via email or post and you may see it in print!

Likewise, we would appreciate local photographs from keen photographers that would make an exciting front cover. Do you have an eye for a beautiful picture? If so, please send us your digital files to [email protected]. We can’t guarantee that we will use any of the images sent to us, but if we do, they will be credited on page 3 of the magazine.

The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers.

We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.

welcometo the Alresford Forum

In order to make using the Forum easier for you, we have created town and village guides so you can see at a glance what is happening in your local area during the coming month.

Forum PhilosophyIt’s quite simple really… The

Forum is your magazine, your voice for the local community. We are lucky enough to live in an area with a strong community spirit, but we all know that its continued success relies upon easy and regular communication of everything we need to know. Our local businesses rely on our continued support to prosper and so we seek to keep our advertising rates extremely competitive. For our local clubs and societies to flourish we publish their details and news free of charge. And for those messages to reach as many people in the community as possible we work hard to ensure The Forum is a free magazine.

So we hope you find something of value or something of interest within the pages of The Forum. We are continually developing the magazine and rely on your input to make it work. Let us know what you think, what you’d like to see in The Forum. Working together we can all participate in building a fantastic forum for our local community!

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

closed on Sundays. It has now been agreed, with the school, that it will be open until 1.00pm on Sunday but not on Bank Holidays. Any organisation that has a need for overflow parking can hire the car park on Sunday afternoons and Bank Holidays by contacting the School office.

Highways ImprovementsWe have identified that Winchester City Council (WCC) has not been levying charges on developers for Highways Improvements in the town. These changes may be applied if there is an identified need for such improvements. Identified needs in Alresford are estimated in excess of £1million. Over the last three years only two charges have been levied totaling £13,000 on two very small building projects. All of the significant housing projects in the town have escaped, despite them having an adverse effect particularly on the town centre. The Town Council is taking issue with WCC over this and as a first step has reviewed the list of outstanding Highways Improvement projects which include:

• Pedestrian access across Sun Lane bridge

• Improvements to provide better pedestrian access to the Station Car Park• The Soke and the bottom of Broad Street needs to be improved giving particular attention to pedestrian safety and structural elements. • Jacklyns Lane Tichborne Down -

new roundabout at The Cricketers.• A cycle link from the town centre to Tichborne/Itchen Stoke road junction.• Bus stop improvements.

Within the existing list there were four projects relating to West Street:

• North side improvements• South side improvements• Pedestrian crossings• JacklynsLane/ Pound Hill junction improvements.

The Town Council has recommended that all these projects be treated as one overall project, not each in isolation, as anything done on one will have a knock-on

effect on the other three and all must be integrated.

In addition the following projects were identified which should be undertaken as part of Hampshire County Council’s ongoing maintenance programme:.• Sun Hill and East Street junction needs re- grading.

• Improvements to the roads in the Stratton Bates area.

July Meeting ScheduleJuly 6th - Full Council 7.30pm at the ARC. June 29th - Planning7.30pm at the ARC

One of Britain's oldest street festivals returns with the Winchester

Hat Fair. A crazy, colourful celebration of theatre and music, now in its 35th year, where entertainers perform voluntarily in exchange for money to be thrown into their hats. Supported by local businesses, colleges and organisations, this FREE festival takes place in the city centre.

Line-upThe Pitts, Pete Sweet and The English Gents and many more circle acts. Over the weekend there will be interactive

Installations around the town, Cathedral Green, The Great Hall Courtyard and Close including, Little Lupin, Once Arts' Picnic, BOSI's 'Squirt or Shirt' and Akedemi's new show, 'TBC' to name but a few. Plus Motionhouse and Urban Playground's new shows, the Wired Aerial Theatre plus Winchester favourites 'Skate Naked' and 'Stickleback Plasticus'.

The Hat Fair is also working with their French Festival partners in the 'ZEPA network' to present 'Les Trois Points de Suspension', 'Acid Kostik' and 'VO Compagnie'. Over the weekend there well also be many other festival treats and surprises.

Will be held Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th July in and around Central Winchester.

2010 WINCHESTER In addition, the programme includes innovative community and education projects including Inside Out Day on Thursday. This culminates in a procession through the city where local school children 'knock on the doors' of civic buildings, asking senior representatives of the City to ask any questions they wish.

Friday is traditionally the unofficial 'Festival Warm up Day' and Schools Day, with a colourful procession of over 1000 children in costume with music and dance, culminating in outdoor theatre, circus and craft workshops in the grounds of the cathedral.

Over the weekend there will be some wonderful and interactive installations around the town, walkabout acts, shows, and more.

Art Society Gets Creative

It is a sign that high summer has arrived when the Alresford Art Society’s Annual

Exhibition is staged in the town’s Community Centre. Members have been putting the finishing touches to their handiwork for weeks and this year’s exhibition will be staged from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th July.

Founded 45 years ago, the Society boasts 130 members who enjoy working in every medium and the summer exhibition gives them a chance to demonstrate their various skills and contrasting styles. Many collectors attend the

exhibition every year just to buy from their favourite local artist, where most of the exhibits will be for sale, along with cards of paintings created by members. Subjects range from seascapes and landscapes, Hampshire views and buildings, and vibrant holiday scenes, to delicate flower studies and portraits - both animal and human.

“We’re hoping that this year’s exhibition will be the best yet,” said Art Society Chairman David Hughes, “and catch once again the spirit of our very lively society.” The Exhibition will be held at Alresford Community Centre in West Street will be open from 10am – 5pm on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th July and 10am - 4 pm Sunday 18th July.

For more information on the exhibition contact David Hughes on 01962 736751, email [email protected] or visit the Society’s website on www.artsociety.alresford.org

Local garden design wins place at Hampton Court

Hampton Court Palace Flower Show has accepted an innovative

garden design reflecting 21st century living from local landscaping business Hambrooks for exhibiting at this year’s show. The world’s largest annual flower show and second only to the Chelsea Flower Show, it takes place from the 6th-11th July and is set in Hampton Court’s magnificent grounds in Surrey.

Hambrooks overcame a number of stringent entry procedures with its contemporary design, which is inspired by the renewed interest in urban garden design to extend homes into outdoor living areas. The garden is called ‘The Living Room’, and incorporates a glass roof veranda and open fireplace together with contemporary weatherproof sofas, providing an ideal environment for

Over the weekend of 4th-6th June 14 members of

the Alresford Twinning Association visited their twin town of Bricquebec in Normandy.

The party left on the fast boat to Cherbourg on friday afternoon arriving in Bricquebec around 20.30 to spend the evening with their hosts.

The group were blessed with some glorious sunshine and exceptional hospitality over the weekend.

On Saturday the group met up in "Les Marais " national Park to spend 3 hours mixing both a guided

boat trip and a ramble through the reed beds of this vast area of marshland. Several species of wildfowl were spotted, but the two highlights were watching a nesting pair of storks feeding their young followed by a close up of a very happy Coypu sunning himself in one of the many pools.

The afternoon was spent visiting various places of interest together with our hosts...including the seaside resorts of Portbail Barneville - Carteret and the spectacular coastline of La Hague .

In the evening Chantal Greard the Bricquebec Twinning President welcomed everyone to a celebratory dinner at a nearby restaurant, where the group enjoyed an excellent five course dinner with a selction of regional dishes from Normandy.

After a sunday tour of various locations in Normandy including the delightful harbour of Honfleur, (dodging many enthusiastic D-Day reenactment troops en route!), the group returned on the evening boat from Caen.

outdoor socialising or relaxation, whatever the weather.

The veranda is surrounded by vertical water features with two individually designed water lilies that slowly open and close in a small moat, which links the ‘living area’ to the rest of the garden laid to planting, trees and paths.

Managing Director Norman Hambrook said, “This is the brainchild of one of our designers, Mike Hodges, and it’s

an honour that we have been accepted to exhibit at Hampton Court’s prestigious show. This is a real landmark for us and it’s great to come in the year we are celebrating 40 years in business.”

Show Time & Scrum Down For The Alresford Pigs

May was another busy month for the Alresford Pigs

who were delighted to give support to the Watercress Festival by assisting with marshalling duties.

You might have spotted our suitably coloured pink polo shirts (and ‘workmanlike’ hi-vis jackets!) helping guide the Watercress procession, carrying the junior King and Queen through the crowds up Broad Street. We also had many other less visible duties on the day, ensuring stand holders found their pitches, manning the road barriers to minimise the impact of those going about their normal Sunday routines, whilst also ensuring that visitors found the appropriate car parks.

All in all a safe and successful day was had by all!

Whilst at the show we also took time out of our busy schedule to present

a cheque for £1,000 to Alresford Mini’s Rugby Club who were enjoying their weekly practice at Perins. The funds have helped provide a gazebo to give cover for their many helpers & kit for the cold wet winter months which was actually used for their Show stand during the showery moments of the day!

We were also pleased to see a number of local people at the show who we’ve recently supported, including a number of mobility scooter drivers, a local family we have assisted in recent difficult times.

Join Silvia & Max for a Summer Party with Live Cuban Jazz Band "Los Cerebros

Silvia & Max, the couple behind Salsa y Sol are celebrating the grand

finale of their ‘Summer Season of Fun With Salsa’ with a summer party with live Cuban jazz band "Los Cerebros" on Thu 29Jul!

"Max and I really wanted to organise some regular ‘Latin Party Nights With Live Cuban Bands’ for all our salsa friends and anyone enjoying Cuban music, since there is nothing like dancing to the hot rhythms of a live Cuban band! It is quite a costly exercise for us and we are operating on an at cost basis for those evenings! But the buzzing atmosphere on those evenings is worth every penny! This is our 4th ‘Latin Party Night

With Live Cuban Band’ and there will be sangria and complimentary nuts and crisps for all the tables to add to the authentic "Cuban ambience! It will be THE HIGHLIGHT of our ‘Summer Season of Fun With Salsa’ before our little summer break in August!"

"We would love as many people as possible to come and join us, whether you are dancing salsa or just enjoy Latin music! The Performance Hall at the Winchester Discovery Centre in Jewry Street is the most amazing venue and Los Cerebros are one of the most amazing Cuban jazz bands; we just love their music! If you would like to have a little taste of Los Cerebros's music, please go to our website www.salsaysol.co.uk and follow the following link:http://www.salsaysol.co.uk/Salsa-Band-Party-Nights.html!

We are looking forward to seeing you all there! For more information about the Summer Party and their regular Dance Classes in Winchester and Preston Candover, please contactSilvia & Max at Salsa y SolTel: 01256 389 275

The Rotary 10K run 2010

There’s always something to do in Alresford. Barely a month goes by

without there being some sort of community event, and June is no exception: the Alresford Rotary 10k Road Race and Fun Run in aid of local and international charities.

We, the family Pagan, entered en masse. Star I (12) and two mates rocked up for the 4k: “We’ll do it in about nineteen minutes Mum, no worries.” Star II (7) sprinted the 1k and, in a moment of madness, husband and I entered the 10k.

Now you would have thought a valuable lesson might have been learnt last year when, on the 4k route, I was passed by the 10k runners. Feeling like a hippo caught up in a herd of migrating Gembok, the stark realisation was that runners have long, elegant strides, cool gear and something on their wrist which indicates pulse, heart rate, calories and the time on several continents. I jog. My feet barely leave the ground, I go up and down a lot and the wobbly bits …. well … wobble.

This year the husband went all Olympian on me, deciding last minute to go for a PB; whatever

that is. However, undaunted, I stood at the back of the starter pack. There I found myself in the company of the very tall and thin who smiled sympathetically down at me much like Gandalf would to a Hobbit. I sought solace in the words from my effortlessly athletic friend who assured me I ‘had it in my legs’; assuming she meant the distance and not cellulite, varicose veins or impending DVT.

The gun went off and we headed for the hills ….all eight of them. For the first 1k it felt like I was wearing a lead diving suit; by the time I reached Abbotstone and the half way mark I was beyond relieved to see the ambulance, I mean, the water stop. It was a run, sorry, jog,

haunted by thoughts of being last, with images of marshals with rugs over their knees sipping milky night-time drinks awaiting the slowest finish ever recorded.

Mild panic set in. This was meant to be fun. All I wanted was to show Star I & II that their aged mother still has it in her, that she’s not yet capitulated

to the velour track suit and daytime telly accompanied by large bars of chocolate (well unless it happens to be raining on a Monday, that is).

The husband and friends passed me by with supportive waves and were now out of sight. I was alone out there… well, almost. Just me and the two older gentlemen: one who couldn’t be caught and one who was determined not to eat any more of my dust. This would clearly be a battle to the finish. He eased past me along the Avenue as I prepared to look not too near death on entry to Arlebury Park, saving what little was left for the ‘sprint finish’. Yeah, right.

My time? Won’t know until the Hampshire Chronicle comes out, don’t really care ……. much. The old adage still stands: it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part. We’ll all run again next year with not a pink track suit in sight, but maybe a tutu ... And if you’re thinking of it, I thoroughly recommend you do the same.Sandra Pagan, Hampshire Mum

Have peace of mind when away from your home. Our conservatory security is second to none Licensed to Pioneer Trading Company

Want to save around £10,000?Do you have a growing family? Are you running out of space?Thinking of moving house?

Have you thought of getting a conservatory built? You will find that it is far easier and quicker to build than a traditional extension and is less likely to run into the hassles of planning permission. Our experience and intuition

will combine with your dreams and visions to create a home that you wish you had created years ago.

So what are the benefits of buying a conservatory over moving home and do the benefits outweigh the costs involved?

1. Adding a conservatory to your home will increase the size of one of your downstairs rooms – especially for a new family and increase the value of your home.2. It is cost effective. 3. The cost of moving including the legal costs and stamp duty, can easily be estimated at around £10,000. 4. It provides a smooth transition into the garden and creates a wonderful outdoor living space.5. It makes for a great dining room – in the spring and summer providing great views and a wonderful ambience in the evening. 6. Above all it is far less stressful than moving home.
