This past week I met with my surgeon and had the staples and stitches removed from the surgical wound in my side. It looks as if the incision is healing properly and I am grateful to be finished with all the cutting, suturing, and hospital stays. There were a few days after surgery when I was pretty miserable and it turns out that I had a “bad bacteria” that was present in my colon and so I began a 14 day regimen of antibiotics to get things back to normal. I remain on blood thinners for the clots in my lungs which will continue for the next four months. All in all, however, I am in good shape and am very excited to get back to a somewhat regular life. Thanks be to God!

My medical team tells me that the next five years will be crucial in terms of monitoring for a recurrence of cancer. I will have regularly scheduled scans and procedures to make

sure that my body is free of the disease. My risk for getting cancer again is obviously higher than normal and thus the source of some lingering anxiety for me. That being said, the intercession of the Blessed Mother and the Saints has brought me this far which gives me great hope for the future.

Speaking of the saints, I recently received a set of prayers to St. Peregrine who is the patron saint of cancer patients. I would like to share with you one of those prayers with the hope that you would join me in praying for all those members of our parish who are afflicted with this disease. While my battle with cancer has been fairly public, many of our brothers and sisters struggle in a more private manner. Let us remember ALL the sick and entrust them to Jesus the Divine Healer:

O God, our heavenly Father,

source of all good and hope for the sick, you sent your Son into the world to take our sufferings upon himself

and to give us life to the full. Look kindly, we pray, on those who are suffering in body and in spirit, and put

their trust in your saving help. Through the intercession of St. Peregrine, Servant of Mary, who showed

patience and strength in his infirmity, send your healing grace to them.

We beg you for an increase in faith, that you will teach us the wisdom of the cross.

Help us to face the trials of life with courageous hearts, that we may never lose confidence in you. Help us to

carry every burden of suffering, following the example of St. Peregrine. As we stand by the cross of your

crucified Son, may we receive comforting strength, with peace and serenity from Him, who lives and reigns

with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

St. Margaret's Shelter for homeless women and their children is in need of size 5-6 diapers. Our food collection on the 5th Sunday of May is designated for them, so perhaps you could add a package of diapers to the food you plan to contribute. A program of Catholic Charities, St. Margaret's Shelter provides emotional, mental, and physical support for women who are temporarily homeless.

MEMORIAL DAY MASSES

Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services invites you to one of our May 30th Memorial Day Masses celebrated annually at each location: Queen of Peace Cemetery, 8:00 am; St. Joseph Cemetery, 10:00 am; and Holy Cross Cemetery, 10:00 am. Invite friends and family to the celebration of Mass to pray and remember the faithful departed. Except for Queen of Peace, the Masses will be outdoors weather permitting (bring your own chair). Scriptural Reflection May 22, 2016 — The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Prv 8: 22-31; Ps 8: 4-9; Rom 5: 1-5; Jn: 16: 12-15

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. That means we are celebrating God on this holy day. In the Catholic Church a solemnity is the highest ranking holy day possible (followed by a feast and a memorial). The Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of our Catholic faith.

As Catholics we acknowledge the Holy Trinity when we arrive in a church, and several times during our liturgies as well as other times. Every time we make the sign of the cross, every time we pray most likely, we are expressing our faith in the Trinity and our faith that the Trinity was revealed by Jesus on the Cross. One part of stewardship is knowing our traditions and the meanings behind them.

Making the sign of the Cross should never be an empty gesture on our parts. Jesus told us that if we love Him, God (the Trinity) will come and dwell within us. More than once St. Paul reminds us that we are “temples of the

living God.” God is within each and every one of us. Do we realize that? Do we live out that truth? Today’s feast confronts us to examine ourselves and our lives. As good stewards we need to live with the certainty that the Blessed Trinity is present in us. Then we need to reflect that presence.

Pope Francis, in his homily on the Feast of the Holy Trinity in 2013, said, “In today’s feast we praise God for His glory is immense. We praise Him and thank Him for He is love, and He calls us to embrace Him and those around us with that love.”

Crime on the Cathedral Campus

In just the last 10 days, we have witnessed a spike in criminal activity on our Cathedral Campus. Spokane Police officers responded to reports of a man lurking in the women’s bathroom whom they promptly removed. In addition, security cameras in the Cathedral recorded the theft of our bronze consecration bells used at Mass. The theft happened in broad daylight. The video was turned over to police for investigation. Criminal activity also included a burglary of the Cathedral Rectory when a young man climbed to the third story and entered the window of Fr. Connall’s private quarters. The thief entered his bedroom and emptied his wallet while Father was in the next room watching T.V. and recovering from surgery. Father Connall confronted the man as he was climbing back out the window and down the fire escape. Spokane Police responded and took fingerprints from the window. Parishioners are encouraged to be especially vigilant regarding questionable activity on our campus. Please do not hesitate to call Crime Check if something seems suspicious (509-456-2233) or 911 when there is an obvious emergency.

Parking Reminder

If you have double-parked someone during Mass, please be sure to move your car promptly after Mass. Please also keep in mind that emergency vehicles must be able to enter the lot (please don’t block the entrances), and that there is a $450 fine for blocking in a handicap parking spot.
