Lesson 2 – Kingdom Citizens 5:3-12 The Beatitudes

The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Very deep needs Mt 4:2 Jn 19:28 We have used these words re: ourselves But, our needs have never been this critical We “sense” or “choose” to be this way



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 The knowledge & awareness of our own

“emptiness” and the desire to be filled “Long for; crave; eagerly desire”

[Thayer on both words]



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 “Righteousness” = right relationship with

God; a desire to be like God; the state of one who is as he ought to be; correctness in thinking, feeling, acting [Thayer]



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Many try to fill themselves with things that

aren’t as eternal as they Eccl 5:10-11 6:7 Even though it is “desired,” it will miserably

fail Lk 15:16-17 Eccl 3:9-11



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Physically “hungry” & “thirsty” will eat and

drink anything put before them, beg for seconds (even foods, drinks they hate)

They’ll do anything to satisfy their need



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Spiritual “hunger” & “thirst” is chosen The kingdom citizen longs to be filled with

that which will last He craves the right kind of food & drink



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Food in the “far country” (hog pen of sin)

won’t really fill us up Lk 15:16-17 We must go to God for filling nourishment

Jn 4:10-14 6:48-58 7:37-38



The Hungry & Thirsty v. 6 Righteousness can only be found in the

gospel of Christ Rom 1:16-17 The kingdom citizen will find what will

satisfy his cravings



The Merciful v. 7 Mercy = compassion; desire to refrain from

dispensing judgment others deserve; pity Compassion to the helpless Lk 10:37 Forgiving “repeat offenders” Mt 18:21-22



The Merciful v. 7 A chosen characteristic to display to others

The one showing it doesn’t merit it himself Yet, he knows he’ll receive none if he

doesn’t extend mercy to others



The Merciful v. 7 To receive mercy from God, one must show

mercy to others Mt 6:14-15 18:21-35 Motivation he knows his own need for it

Eph 2:1-5 Rom 5:8 Titus 3:3-5



The Merciful v. 7 The kingdom citizen will be “blessed” when

he shows mercy…he will receive the same from God

To be forgiven…one must be forgiving



The Pure In Heart v. 8 “Clean; genuine; (utterly) sincere” Not describing those already so Rom 3:23 Jesus discusses those who choose to be

this way



The Pure In Heart v. 8 “Spiritually focused”…“single-minded” Not allowing anything to deter one from

coming to God (determination) It is the “single eye” 6:22-23



The Pure In Heart v. 8 It is the “honest & good heart” Lk 8:15 Though not a “pure” person…it describes

one who comes to grips with sin & is determined to find relief with God



The Pure In Heart v. 8 He won’t “play games” re: confessing sin He won’t excuse or deny sin & guilt There is no room in the kingdom for such a

“shrewd” character Lk 16:1-8



The Pure In Heart v. 8 Neither will he be the “double-minded” man

(trying to keep one foot in the kingdom and the other in the world) Jas 1:6-8 4:4

He is “single-minded”



The Pure In Heart v. 8 We choose to be completely honest with

God & others re: our sins Only the pure in heart may “ascend the holy

hill to see the Lord” Psa 24:3-4



The Peacemaker v. 9 Peace among men is desirable Rom 12:18 Yet, that is not what Jesus is discussing He did not die so men might “get along” He may in fact “divide” men Mt 10:34-36



The Peacemaker v. 9 Not discussing the “art of negotiation” and

the “skill of compromise” to bring men together on some important issue

This isn’t the N.T. kingdom Mk 10:21-22



The Peacemaker v. 9 The most important kind of peace…peace

one chooses to have with God Sin puts us at odds with God…Jesus

bridges that “gap” Jn 14:27 Rom 5:1



The Peacemaker v. 9 We also achieve “peace” with others who

choose to obey the gospel Eph 2:13-17 Those “afar off” are brought “near” and

made into body in Christ



The Peacemaker v. 9 We are primarily a “peacemaker” when we

make peace with God re: our own sins We can be a “peacemaker” to others when

we help them also make peace with God



The Peacemaker v. 9 The “peacemakers” will be called “children

of God” Only they will know the “God of peace” as

Father Rom 15:33



The Persecuted vv. 10-12 Persecutions are not to surprise kingdom

citizens 1 Jn 3:13 Jn 15:18-20 Even servants of old were “abused” and

“mistreated” v. 10a



The Persecuted vv. 10-12 One would think that those who choose to

be the person described in vv. 3-9 would be appreciated by the world

Jesus tells us the “ugly truth”



The Persecuted vv. 10-12 One is mistreated “for the kingdom of

heaven’s sake” (for faith) vv. 10a, 11b His “crime” is that he has become like his

Master…loving & serving God, others



The Persecuted vv. 10-12 Such a choice of conduct sets him at odds

with a world darkened by sin Jn 3:19-20 The world responds with hatred & animosity

cp. 1 Jn 3:12 Gen 4:2b-8



The Persecuted vv. 10-12 They have a “reward in heaven” v. 12a They are to “rejoice & be exceedingly glad”

Jas 1:2-4 1 Pet 4:12-19 It requires faith & conviction Heb 11:24-26
