His father was an inventor, and encouraged his love of music. After years of studying piano as a child, he left his family at age 14 and moved to Paris to attend the Paris Conservatory.

One of his most famous pieces, Boléro (1927), became “all the rage,” not only in Europe, but in America. The piece was heard over the radio, on recordings and in movie theatres across the country!

Ravel originally wrote The Mothergoose Suite as a piano duet to be played by children.

Tchaikovsky loved playing the piano. As a young child, he often chose this over playing outside with friends.

He was a really smart kid! Tchaikovsky spoke three languages by the time he was six years old.

Tchaikovsky composed some of the most famous ballets in the world, including Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker.

His father was a composer, but he did not want Johann Strauss, Jr. to follow in his footsteps.

He grew up in Germany during World War II. He made sure to keep a good relationship with the Nazi Party to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

He is frequently referred to as “The Waltz King” because he composed over 400 waltzes, polkas and other types of dance music during his lifetime.

JS Bach was born the youngest of eight children to a family full of musical talent. Most of his male relatives played instruments, and 53 of those relatives were also named Johann!

He studied organ and became very well-known throughout Germany. His professional life wasn’t easy though, as he fought a lot with his employers.

While he was alive, Bach became famous for his talent in playing the organ, but he also wrote over 1,200 musical works. He was not recognized for his talent in composing until long after his death.

As a child, Brahms loved to read so much that he would keep a book propped up on his piano so he could read while he practiced.

Brahms once fell asleep while world-famous musician, Franz Liszt, performed a piano sonata.

He loved the outdoors! When he took vacations, it was usually a hiking trip in Italy.

He wrote his first opera, The Giant, when he was eight years old, after hearing the music from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty.

He would spend up to 14 hours a day composing music. Since he wrote so much music, he often would forget what he had composed.

The Russian government made rules for composers to follow so that they would compose music that “everyone could understand.” Prokofiev left Russia to come to America from 1918-1922 to have the freedom to compose the way he wanted to.

His father was the village butcher and innkeeper, who sang folk songs to entertain his patrons. He wanted Antonín to become a butcher.

He loved to wander through woods and forests, and he was also fascinated with pigeons. When he moved to America, he would go to New York’s Central Park several times a week just to watch the pigeons.

From 1892 to 1895 he served as the director of the new National Conservatory in New York City. During this period, he showed deep interest in American folk music.

He was recognized as a talented conductor and pianist. He became the first American to be appointed Principal Conductor of the New York Philharmonic.

He was a talented pianist at a young age, and studied music at Harvard University even though is dad wanted him to take over the family wig business.

In 1961 his musical West Side Story was made into a movie. It went on to win 10 Academy Awards.

Meet the Conductor

What instruments do you play? Piano is my main instrument, though I played cello for two years when I was a kid.

Do you remember how old you were when you first became involved in music? Yes! I was always fascinated with music as far back as I can remember, and I actually asked for piano lessons for my 5th birthday.

What is your favorite color? Black! That's the color of my performance clothes, which I also call my Superman outfit. Where is the most interesting place that your career has taken you? Actually, I can't name just one place. One of my favorite things about my lifetime in the arts is that my jobs have literally taken me all over the world. As a kid, I spent 5 months on tour, and I did over 100 performances in 47 of the 50 US states during that time. Seeing almost the entire United States at the age of 12 remains one of the luckiest things I've ever gotten to do. As a conductor, I've had the chance to go to Japan and Switzerland, and will be traveling to Korea later this year. Right now, as I'm doing this interview, I'm at the airport for a flight to Dallas. What did you like to do when you were in elementary school? Without a doubt, my most favorite thing to do as a kid was perform. It was both a job and a hobby; plus, most of my closest friends (of all ages) were performing artists as well. That said, I always found time to play lots of video games!
