A Message from Mr. PatrickHere are a two items I would like to address to all families at The W-E School of Innovation:

● Students can not text home that they aren’t feeling well and request to be picked up. If a student is ill they need to see the SOI nurse, who will decided if a parent should be contacted.

● Absences/tardies/vacations days are becoming an issue. This year HB 410 went into effect. This is a state law that changes ‘days missed’ from school to an ‘hours based’ way of counting student seat time. Vacations, doctor visits, and tardies add up to missed seat time, and at SOI, with all the group activities and real-world speakers, it is nearly impossible to ‘make things up’ for a child who misses a stretch of time. PLEASE try to limit days missed throughout the year so we can continue to provide your student with an amazing experience at SOI!

MATH with Mrs. Wadsworth

Math 1 and 2 - Multiplication properties and division rules are what we’ve been focusing on this week. Math 3 - Regrouping when adding and subtracting multi-digit problems.

Be careful when reading directions… we took a directions test, and most students did NOT follow do well!

Reminder- Addition and Subtraction Facts Update coming home soon!

LITERACY with Mrs. Rosciszewski

This week we had less time for new concepts due to AIR testing. Students were introduced to Daily Language Review which will provide them with review and practice of various language skills/concepts. This week we practiced capitalization, punctuation, fact/opinion, high frequency word spelling. We also added prefixes to our interactive notebooks and discussed how they can change the meaning of root/base words.

DISCOVERY with Mrs. Reed

Students taught each other about FAST and SLOW land changes this week. Presentations were great, however, some need to work on being a better audience member during a presentation. We used BrainPop Jr. to take a review quiz for both types of land changes and learned a lot about erosion and weathering this week! We are wrapping up our focus on rocks with taking a look at the rock cycle. Ask your child how the rock cycle connects to our focus on ‘changes over time.’

Sixth Grade

New Beginnings

Happy Birthday!Kylee Neeld (October 29th)

As our new 6th graders entered the world of middle school, we immediately began our first capstone, “New Beginnings.” Over the next few weeks, the SOI 6th grade will be looking at the Ancient River Civilizations of Mesopotamia, India, China and Egypt and exploring their (GRAPES) Government, Religion, Arts & Achievement, Politics, Economics and Social Structures. We will be learning about how and why these civilizations started, how the resources they had influenced them, and how their people formed governments and religions. As we learn about these historical civilizations, we will be reading about utopian and dystopian civilizations. We will be looking at the same GRAPES categories of these fictitious societies and trying to draw parallels. In the end, the students will have learned enough about civilizations to be able to create their own civilization and market it at a Trade Expo.

In Math - Chapter 1 is done! We started prepping for our chapter assessment which will be next week, probably on Wednesday. We will be tackling the 21st Century Test as prep. Please keep up with Khan!In Honors Math: Chapter 1 is complete. We have been doing the 21st Century Test as prep and we will finish that on Monday. Test will be Tuesday. We also are continuing our understanding of algebraic expressions in chapter 5. We will continue to review 6th grade standards using Khan. Students also began working on MakerMinded.Pre-Algebra: This week we continued deepening our understanding of equations. We focused on writing equations to represent problem situations and solving equations with variables on both sides. Currently we are about 60-70% completed with 6th grade Khan.

In Science - We spent the week doing an alternative assessment on Resources, both renewable and nonrenewable. We finished presenting them today. On Monday we begin a mini unit on the Microscope. Question: What do you feel is a good alternate energy source for Lake County?

In Social Studies -We are continuing our studies of Ancient River Civilizations as we researched Ancient Egypt and the life on the Nile. Students did partner reading of lessons 1 and 2 and determined what was the most important information. Question of the Week: How are hieroglyphs similar to modern day texting?

In ELA - Students are working on their first writing competition of the year! The VFW sponsors the Patriot’s Pen essay, and we are thrilled to partner this year with local Post 4358. This is such an amazing opportunity for our students, and I am eager to see their submissions on Monday!*We “summarized” literature circle novels with 20+ plot cards. The groups then worked together and designed structures relating to their novels. These ranged from single story to ten+ stories, and the detail on them was extraordinary! I hope you enjoyed the pictures on Dojo and Twitter! * We took our pronoun part 1 retakes and also completed pronoun part 2 assessments. Retake packets for part 2 are due Wednesday.
