SOI Athletics UpdateAs the Willoughby Warriors completed their wrestling season with the WRC Tournament, a few School of Innovation students had outstanding seasons. Gavin McArthur had a fine season finishing with an above .500 record for the season and also took home third place at the Red Raider Classic in January. Eddie Cooper also had a fine record in dual matches and had a fourth-place finish at the WRC. Cal Werden finished the season undefeated while wrestling in the 80 lb weight class. Cal also had a first at Red Raider Classic and took 1st place at the WRC! Congratulations to these three gentlemen on outstanding seasons and we look forward to a great season next year. If you would like to be part of the wrestling team in 2019-2020 talk to one of these three guys and they will inform you of when the season starts.

Invent Our Future!

Math - Wernet: Our current focus of study will be expressions and touching into some introductory algebra.Wernet/Zampini: With Coach Wernet we will be working on probability and data analysis. With Mrs. Zampini, we are continuing our study of Geometry and looking at triangles.Zampini: Pre-Algebra: We just finished a mini-unit on Pythagorean Theorem. We are diving into chapter 5: rates and proportional reasoning, including similar figures. This will also be a quick unit!

ELA - We have been reading and discussing our 3rd quarter literature circle novels, and everyone has been highly engaged during this experience! Groups are working well together and continuing to make connections between our social studies “G.R.A.P.E.S.” and modern-day literature. *Reminder - this novel does count as the 2nd “Connect Four” selection of the quarter. *Greek and Latin roots update - We are also working on our 4th Root Study and have now added 20 roots to our vocabulary journals! This week’s list includes the following: mega, sol, mono, du, & ambi/amphi.

Welcome to the 2nd Semester! Our new theme is “Invent Our Future.” We will be looking at how people

have created communities and invented new technologies to enhance their world. Each of us is an inventor waiting for our inspiration!

Social Studies - New semester...new Coach...Coach Wernet will be the SS coach for the rest of the academic year. The beginning of the quarter has been a focus on our M.I.C.E. countries but with a look to their modern sides, still looking at each country through the G.R.A.P.E.S lens. We have covered Egypt and Iraq (Mesopotamia) and next week we will be studying India.

Science - Mrs. Zampini is guiding the students as they look at life science. This week we concluded our study of cell theory and discussed how microscopes helped in developing that theory, We will be learning how to effectively use microscopes to see things more clearly as we bring cells more into focus. We will also be starting a PBL, in which students discover the importance of a cell membrane and flow rates.

News and UpdatesFun in February has begun! If your student choose not to participate in the theme day, they are expected to wear their school uniform. Fun in February Calendar

MathMath 7:In the last two weeks we have finished our study of inequalities and are moving on the CH 2: Percents. The students will be learning about percent of a number, the percent proportion and the percent equation. Then, we will focus on percent markup, tax and tip. Try having them calculate tip the next time you’re out to eat!

Pre-Algebra:We have finished CH 5 and are getting started In CH 6. With this chapter, we move into the world of expressions. The students will be working with simplifying expressions using the Distributive Property to help them solve real-world problems using mental math.

Math 8:Students have started Chapter 3: Functions. They are learning how rate of change and slope are related. Students know that a proportional function is also a direct variations. Students know how to write and graph a linear equation in slope intercept form. In addition, students can identify, calculate and interpret x and y-intercepts of a linear function. Students are working on learning how to write an equation for

a line in point slope form.

Algebra I:Students are learning about exponential functions. They are able to write an exponential growth/decay function and use it to make predictions. Students also learned how to calculate compound interest. Next week, there will be a test on Chapter 7 and students will begin their study of quadratic functions.

ELA Students have just finished sharing out their

findings about myths, fairy tales, and fables from around the world. Many discoveries were made and a lot of great conversations took place! We have also begun reviewing the components of storytelling by reading and analyzing short passages about constellations. This background work was in preparation for the upcoming myth writing activity. Students will be creating their own constellation and then create a myth using some guided pre-writing activities with plenty of room for creativity and cross-curricular connections to the social studies units on the Greeks and Romans!

Social Studies We are off and running with CH 5 Ancient Rome.

We began by learning of Romulus and Remus and their legend of the founding of Rome. We have most recently been learning about the power struggle between the Patricians and Plebeians. We even had an experience with creating a mosaic, where the students learned first hand what this power struggle might have felt like. Now we are studying the aftermath of the Punic Wars and how this affected Rome’s Republic, leading to its empire.

ScienceStudents created a superhero/supervillain based

on an element from the periodic table.

Character’s super powers were based on each

element’s physical and chemical properties.

Each superhero/supervillain had backstory,

slogan, and name. Some belong to a league of

element superhero while others had a nemesis.

Students were able to use a Wacom tablet to

created a digital drawing of their

superhero/supervillain.

PBL/Engineering Arrangements are being made with Coach Legerski so that students moving on with their vein finder designs can

get into the Fab Lab to continue their work. Students have plans for the next phase and are ready to move forward! Almost all Genius Hour research proposals have been approved and many students are well into the next phases of their projects. There has been a great balance between moving forward on this project and using time to obtain academic support or complete assignments where needed.

8th GRADE

ELAWe have just finished, “Of Mice and Men” and had some very good discussions about hopes and dreams, and how the characters’ internal conflicts affected others. Next week we will be comparing scenes from the movie with the book, and reading the poem, “A Mouse”. This poem is where Steinbeck found the title for his book.

SOCIAL STUDIESStudents are continuing to learn about early administrations and the precedents that were set. They compared events, ideas, and leaders of this era to those of today. Eye-opening. Ask them about it.

We are moving ahead to study the Jefferson era! Think political parties, the unique election of 1800,the Louisiana Purchase and the War of 1812.SCIENCE

● Unit 4 wrap up and testing● Students can:

○ Describe uniformitarianism and give examples.

○ Explain 5 different ways fossils can form.

○ Explain what relative dating is and how it is applied to the layers of the earth (law of superposition).

○ Describe Radiometric dating and solve half-life problems.

○ Describe catastrophism and give examples.

I have been loaning out a lot of calculators and dry erase markers lately! Please double check with your child to see if they have the materials they need for class! Thank you!!

Coming up in... Algebra - Chapter 7 Test is Wednesday 2/6/19

Geometry - Chapter 8 Test is Wednesday 2/6/19

Math 8 - Students are being given a chance to retake the Functions Chapter Test. Students have today and Monday to retake the test. Only 1 student approached me so far about retaking the test. Systems Test will be later next week!

Continue to Check Google Classroom for each specific class to see agendas, updates, and assignments!

All students in ALL classes should have a TI-30 XIIS Scientific calculator (or a similar scientific calculator) for math class EVERY DAY!!!

SPANISH

Hola, We are continuing with our storytelling, with Question and Answering as well as learning new Verbs each week and how to use them in sentence structures.

We will also be learning about the culture in Spain with bullfighting and what it represents.

MUSIC NEWSThe 6th grade general music students are studying music of their own nationality. They were asked to pick one of the countries of their family’s origin and make a report on folk music of that country. This is a nice opportunity for students to talk with their grandparents and other family members to learn something special about their family history.

The bands are in the early stages of preparing for their next concert which will take place at South on March 2nd.
