The Big Lottery Fund has invited Warmingham Village Hall to put in a third stage bid for a £550,000 grant to replace the current well-used but outdated building. Extensive consultation with community groups and residents has fed into the design brief for a new hall. Two stages of the bidding process have been successful and the Big Lottery Fund has recognised the need for a modern community centre. Chairman of the Village Hall Committee, John Richardson, said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a super new building for local people and organisations to use. “It will also be a valuable function venue for all the people moving into the new housing developments which are being built in the areas all around Warmingham.” The story of the current hall began in the 1950s when villagers bought a disused army building from Shropshire, previously used as a sergeants’ mess hut, dismantled it and brought it to the present site next to the school. The Dale family donated the land for the hall and local people gave of their time and labour to re-erect it. SANTA joined local Rotarians to help raise some £7,500 for charity over the festive period. The Rotary Club of Sandbach Crosses held their annual Santa collection from December 5 to 19, collecting in Sandbach town centre, outside Waitrose and at the M6 services at Junction 17. With Rotary club members and friends dressed up as snowmen, elves, and Rudolph, Santa managed to raise £3,750. The amount is being matched by Barclays Bank to give a record sum of £7,500 in total. The charities that will benefit are St Luke’s Hospice, Marie Curie Nurses, Alder Hey Childrens Hospital, North West Air Ambulance and the NSPCC. Rotary Club president Tony Wilford said: “We would like to thank the people of Sandbach for their continued generosity and support; we would also thank all the travelling public who passed through the services at Junction 17 and donated to our worthy causes.

“The club is grateful to Waitrose for allowing us to collect outside their store and to Roadchef at Junction 17 for their permission to collect.’ “Without the help of Waitrose, Roadchef and Barclays Bank this record sum raised would not have been possible and we thank them for their generosity and assistance.”

CONCERNS have been voiced over the recent departure of several senior members of staff at Cheshire East Council. The head of Legal Services, the head of Corporate Resource and Stewardship and the Business Manager have all left the council. The executive director of Strategic Commissioning also left a few months ago, while the director of Economic Growth and Prosperity has also announced she is leaving. All of these people are women. Sandbach Councillor Sam Corcoran (pictured) said: “In July I argued that money is not the best way to motivate senior staff and argued that the council shouldn’t be using money to try to buy loyalty.

“The Conservative leadership pressed ahead with big pay rises for senior staff, but simply increasing pay has not been sufficient to retain some senior staff. “I think Cheshire East is a great place to live and work - we should not be competing on price. We should be competing on quality of life and job satisfaction.” Cllr Dorothy Flude, Labour’s longest serving councillor said, “Bad attitudes prevail all the way through the organisation. “In my seven years there have been so very many changes in the top management it makes one’s head spin. “I have found that I get used to their name and job title and after a short time they are gone, usually with a pay off and a clause in their severance deal not to spill the beans. “What a way to manage the third largest unitary authority in the North West.”

FIRE crews from Sandbach, Congleton and Alsager rescued a person trapped following an accident on Dog Lane. The incident happen at around 7.37am on December 23 on the A50 between Sandbach and Holmes Chapel. Firefighters released one person who was trapped in the wreckage of the crash. The main collision involved two cars but a third car was also involved. Two people were trapped in the vehicles, one was released

unaided after being assessed by paramedics and the other was cut free by the crews and handed into the care of the Ambulance Service. Police closed the road while dealing with the incident.

Concern over female posts

STUDENTS and staff at Sandbach School have raised more than £6,000 for charity in just one term. The whole school community took part in Children in Need and the Text Santa Christmas Jumper day raising over £3,000 on these events. Activities included non-uniform days, fun runs and a ‘soak the teacher’ event. Most recently Year 9 students and staff have been taking part in fundraising activities for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which treated one of their fellow pupils. Jack Buddle was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of cancer. He has undergone treatment at Alder Hey and was recently given the all clear. His attitude has made him an inspiration to all around him, displaying determination and positivity throughout.

In December his year group and staff members, undertook a sponsored run for him, also selling #Jog4Jack wristbands to raise awareness and more money, which came to £2,150 in total. Alongside this, tutors Pete Cornell and Dan Cooper undertook a 24-hour sporting challenge, playing as many sports as they could around the clock. These included a staff versus students netball game, bowls, tennis, hockey and crazy golf around the school. This part of the fundraising has so far raised £1,183. Assistant head teacher Neil Darling said: “We are delighted that the students and staff have been so enthusiastic about the charity events so far this year. The Year 9 effort was particularly outstanding and sets a new record for fundraising by one year group.”

Rescue from crash wreckage

COUNCILLORS have called on train companies to provide contingency measures when the Crewe-Wilmslow line is closed from February 13 to 21. There will be no trains at Sandbach all that week and commuters will have to rely on buses. Councillor Steve Hogben, a retired train planner, said: “The obvious solution would be for Northern trains to use an idle unit to run non stop from Crewe to Stoke and put passengers onto the diverted Virgin train which should have called at Crewe. “However, this requires different companies to work together for the good of passengers rather than the profit motive

which leads the fragmented, privatised service we now enjoy. “Let’s see if the private companies can get their act together and just this once put passengers first and adopt this solution.” Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran added: “In 2010 campaigners nearly had a deal on restoring the Sandbach-Middlewich-Northwich line to decent standards, which would have created a second route from Sandbach to Manchester via Altrincham. This was kicked into the long grass by the Coalition cuts. “Had the Coalition cuts not stopped the Middlewich line scheme there would be a viable alternative in place.”

Trains misery for commuters

THERE will be a week of special events in Sandbach called Passion for Life starting on Sunday March 20. The event is organised jointly by St Peter’s Parish Church at Elworth and Wheelock Heath Baptist Church at Winterley and Sandbach. This series was last held in 2014

and proved very popular and this year will include an arts and crafts evening on the 23rd, a pub quiz evening on the 24th and a Murder Mystery Dinner on the 25th, along with special Easter visitor services. For more information please contact Chris Cliff on 01270 762504.

Passion for Life in SandbachSANDBACH Library is scduled to close for two weeks for a revamp this month. The Commons library shut its doors on January 25 and will reopen on February 8. Work is taking place to bring about a more ‘welcoming, convenient and warm environment’ for library users.

A council spokesman said: “We are closing the library to install new lighting and ceiling grid and additional shelving while also upgrading the building’s fire warning system. “The council is responding to the excellent feedback received through the public consultation exercise.”

(cont. from front) Although well used over the past decades, and despite the efforts of dedicated volunteersin maintaining and extending the hall, it can no longer cater for the needs of people in Warmingham, Moston and the wider area. The help of the Big Lottery Fund to replace the building is vital to the project. It took hours of volunteers’ time to research the needs of those who will use the new hall, with the results of two questionnaires helping tofinalise requirements. Although a development funding grant is being given by the Big Lottery Fund to help withcreating and costing the final plans for the project, theCommittee need to raise the sum of £50,000 or more to support their bid. • Pictured on the front are members of the Warmingham Village Hall Committee delighted at the news - L to R: Simon Moss, Naomi Higson, Karen Furber, Andrew MacFarlane, Mike Sant, SueMacFarlane, Adrian Crank, Mel Morning.

AFTER steadying the ship with an impressive first win of the year against Newport, Sandbach RUFC may be kicking themselves for not securing victory away at Nuneaton. The side started the New Year brightly winning 36-15 at home against Newport. But they will consider themselves unlucky to only

come away with a losing bonus point against the Nuns, after losing out 24-20 in an open and entertaining match In the end it was a contest decided on a few errors and crucial refereeing decisions. Sandbach had seemed to wrestle dominance of the game after a shaky start, with highlights including a

catch and drive try from Chris Davenport. Sandbach extended their lead but Nuneaton bounced back, taking full advantage of some controversial refereeing decisions. Sandbach continued to fight as the game become a little fractious. Sandbach scrum half Nick

Allsop went to the bin when he voiced his displeasure at a refereeing decision. Despite concerted pressure from Sandbach, the home side held out in a pulsating end to the game. Sandbach currently sit 11th in the league with 26 points. • Pictured is Nick Allsop, man of the match againt Newport.
