THE UK’s only touring tribute festival returns to Sandbach this summer. The fun kicks off at Sandbach Rugby Club on Saturday July 2, with three major tribute acts and five local support bands, who will be entertaining music fans. Andrew Miller, licensee for Sandbach Fake Festivals, said: “This year is extra special for us as we are celebrating ten years of Fake Festivals, and we know that Sandbach people love to party.” This year sees top tributes to Queen, U2 and The Stone Roses hit the stage, along with local up and coming bands.
The 10th anniversary celebrations will be going on all day and night, and there will be the main bar inside the marquee, and a variety of food and entertainment stalls in the outside arena. Local bands and artists Acoustics, Green Bullet, Josh Walker Band, Oli Ng and Stepping Lane, have all been hand-picked by Andrew to perform on the main stage. He added: “We feel we get the right balance of original and covers artists which mixes the day up, and also gives up and coming bands a chance to showcase their music, in the hope that any media attending
the event might pick up on them. “We have had the likes of NME Magazine, Capital FM, and various other radio stations
attend our festivals on a regular basis, so it is a great platform for new music.” Tickets are available from www.fakefestivals.co.uk.

by STEWART GREENA NEW arts festival in Sandbach proved a hit with local residents last month. Sandbach Town Hall hosted the event between May 9 and 14, marking the latest in a history of arts festivals in the town. Sandbach had its first advertised ‘art’s festival’ back in 1969. By 1992, when the next festival was organised by Balcony Arts, it featured celebrity names Tom Robinson, Dave Gorman and Manchester Camerata and in 1993 Lindisfarne and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra provided the entertainment. The festival continued until 1996 with Fairport Convention, Mark Lamarr and others.
This was followed almost immediately by the Sandbach School Art’s Festival. This year’s Sandbach Arts Week is the first such event since then. Events included Authors and Awards featuring five writers, and a screening of the award-winning film The Danish Girl and a ‘Baby Sensory’ event. There was also a performance from Street Dance Academy and a vintage craft fair. Unfortunately the two musical performers Sarka and Friends and Gemma Louise Doyle both cancelled performances in the town. Despite the teething problems, plans are already being put forward for next year, perhaps on a different week.

MARIE Curie is appealing for volunteers to join the Sandbach fundraising group. Holly Fraser, Marie Curie’s Community Fundraiser for Cheshire, said: “We are looking for individuals who are organised with great communication skills to join our fantastic fundraising group covering the Sandbach area. “All money raised by the group is to provide high quality nursing care to terminally ill patients, totally free, in the local area.
“We are looking volunteers to help out in lots of ways, including organising and taking part in supermarket collections to helping support the fundraising group in organising events. “If you feel you could help Marie Curie fundraise, then we would love to hear from you. We are recruiting the key role secretary too!.” For more information call Holly on 0161 255 2800 or email [email protected].
FODEN’S Band has launched a fundraising campaign to restore damaged memorabilia after a fire destroyed its rehearsal room. The world famous Sandbach band is looking to raise £30,000 after the blaze ripped through the room in Elworth on April 17. The room contained historical artefacts, a music library of over 3,500 pieces and many of the band’s musical instruments as well as their famous red jackets. Following a lengthy investigation by Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service and Cheshire Police, it has been deduced that the cause of the blaze is believed to be electrical and started accidentally. A band spoesman said: “All at Foden’s are extremely saddened by the incident, especially the loss of much of the band’s historical archives. “Musical Instruments can easily be replaced but to lose items of sentimental and historical value is devastating to the band, and the wider brass band community. “However, it is at times like this when you realise what a fantastic movement the Brass Band family is; we have been inundated with hundreds of messages of support and offers of help from bands and individuals, not only in our local area, but across the entire UK and overseas. “We have also received numerous offers of help from various music publishing companies to start the rebuilding of our music library. “Despite our loss we participated in three concerts in the week that followed the fire,
something that would not have been possible without the offers of help. “All existing and new concerts will be honoured and our wide ranging Youth development commitments will continue. “The incident has brought the already close band even closer
together, and the rebuilding process has already started. “Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service battled to save as much as possible, but it is now clear that of the artefacts saved, considerable repair and preservation costs must be found. “The fire has broken the hearts of not only band members, but music lovers across the banding world.” The band would be grateful for any contribution towards restoring the few items of historical significance they have left. Band appeal after blaze
by STEWART GREENSANDBACH scouts have been celebrating the anniversary of the building they have occupied for the last 40 years. They gathered together past and present scouts and leaders for a look back at the building and past activities, and even had a cake made for the occasion. Dennis Fricker, Jim Thompson, Reg Shallcross and Tony Harrison were guests of honour as founders of the group in Sandbach. The group was founded in Sepetember 1968, starting
from an idea of Reg Shallcross, whose son wanted to join the scouts but found that there wasn’t a group in the area. Reg decided to form one and became chairman of the Scouts in Sandbach. They were soon joined by Tony Harrison, a leader in Chelford but who lived in Sandbach and had been thinking of joining a group nearer his home. After meeting at the Wesley Avenue Schoolroom, now the Wesley Centre, and then St Mary’s Church Hall, growing popularity eventually forced the need for new premises.

Charity appeals for help
TRADERS have been handed a lifeline in their fight against the planned redevelopment of Sandbach Market Hall. The town council has been heavily criticised after proposing to splash out £900,000 on a revamp of the indoor market, which includes relocating their offices from the Literary Institute. Councillors agreed at a consultation meeting on April 29 to consider reviewing the Market Hall redevelopment and new office accommodation as two separate issues following accusations of deliberate
attempts to mislead the public. The Town Council says it wants to revitalise the building, making it open and welcoming, attracting custom and visitors to the heart of the town. The authority is looking at putting some offices on a new first floor to house town council staff and saving about £20,000 on costs. At the meeting residents and traders called for the council to look at other premises and to revisit the possibility of remaining at the Sandbach Literary Institute.

ELWORTH have started the season on fine form, winning six on the bounce, with back to back victories in the league and cup. The team managed to extend their lead at the top of Division One with a 186-run win over Cheadle. And the following day they knocked Premier Division Leek out of the Talbot Cup after a close second-round tie. A club spokesman said: “To say we have started 2016 with intent is probably putting it mildly.” At home to Cheadle, Elworth declared on a towering 243-5. Khalid Malik’s 83, which featured 14 fours, provided the foundation for Yasir Ali’s 107no – a fourth century for the Foxes which came in 75 balls and included six maximums. Cheadle’s reply was in tatters by the time young James Holt returned 2-0, both clean bowled, in a memorable moment. Mike Holt took 5-17 as the beleaguered visitors were
skittled for 57. It was harder work the following day. Leek posted 173ao (Greg Willott 63) as Ali, Mike Holt, Chris Winter and James Holt took two wickets
each. Elworth’s reply started strongly, but faltered towards the end and they scraped home with 177-8 (Ali 48no, Lee Morris 41, Khalid Malik 28).
ON A ROLL IT’S been a busy start to the summer for the Sandbach Striders. Last week saw members take to the Welsh hills in four different events, with more than 15,000 feet of ascent between them. There were also three park runs, a five-miler in fancy dress and one of the busiest 10k events in the country. • Entry is now open for the Sandbach 10k and Family Fun Run on Sepember 11 this year, sponsored by Butcher & Barlow. There will be an array of family activities going on throughout the day including a bouncy castle and live music. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the South Cheshire branch of The Samaritans. There is a half mile children’s fun run kicking off at 10.20am, with the main race due to start at 11am. The event takes place at Sandbach Cricket Club where facilities and parking will be available. For more information and to register visit http://www.sandbachstriders.co.uk.
