FROM THE PRIEST ’S DESK

How time passes! Just forty days ago we celebrated our Savior’s Nativity (His

birth). And now according the law in the Old Testament, He is brought by His

parents, the Virgin Mary and Joseph the Betrothed, following and respecting the

law, He who is the author of the Law, to the Temple and is presented as a forty day

baby. As in His holy Baptism where He humbles Himself and is baptized by one

who is not worthy to unloose His shoe-laces, our Savior in this Feast humbles

Himself and abides by the Law and is brought to the Temple and presented to St

Symeon the Presbyter, and Anna the Prophetess. Let us take example by our

Savior Himself, and bow our heads in obedience to the Church in abiding by the

Laws and Canons of our Church, which are the tools for bringing us to our

salvation. Read the words of the Ninth Ode for the Feast of the Presentation:

In the shadow and letter of the Law, let us the faithful contemplate

a prefiguring: Every male child that opens the womb is holy unto

God. Therefore do we magnify the first-born Word, the Son of the

Father Who is without beginning, the first-born Child of a Mother

who has not know wedlock.

Yes, let us contemplate a prefiguring in the shadow and letter of the Law.

For Christ Himself, taking on our flesh and abiding by the Law, again shows us

His Divinity and His Humanity, by humbling Himself and is obedient to the Law.

And since we speak of spiritual tools and humbling ourselves by accepting the

Laws and Canons of the Church, we find that the Beginning of the Triodion begins

on Feb 5 and Great Lent begins February 27. We enter this most spiritually

sobering time of year where we battle our passions and take on the spiritual

struggle preparing us to come to our Savior’s resurrection. Although our Sunday

services change only slightly by celebrating the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil, our

weekday services change for the season in which we enter. Wednesday evenings

we will have the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, followed by a Lenten Dinner,

and Presentation. On Fridays we will have the wonderful Salutations.

I look forward seeing you all during these wonderful days preceding the

Great Fast and during those days of the Great Fast.

God bless you all,

Fr. John Afendoulis

YOUNG VOICES

The Story of Zaccheus

by Antonia Mosiades

Today I will be talking about The story of Zacchaeus.

Jesus entered Jericho drawing a large crowd of people to see him. A man

whose name was Zacchaeus ran to a tree and climbed up to see Jesus through the

crowd, catching Jesus’s attention. Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector making him

wealthy and a sinner in the eyes of the people . Seeing Zacchaeus in the tree, Jesus

looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house

today” because seeing him in the tree showed Jesus that Zacchaeus was ready to

allow Jesus in his heart and his home and be saved.”Even such an unlikely candidate

for salvation is not beyond the reach of Jesus' efforts to reclaim the lost.” Everyone is

worth saving and capable of change. “Zacchaeus's "salvation" involves the restoration

of his honor within the community, and that restoration then reminds readers not to

look upon the wealthy and automatically assume that they are corrupt or sinful.” Even

such an unlikely candidate like Zacchaeus changed by no longer focusing on his

wealth but giving it to the poor.

This passage relates to the modern world. We live in a society where people are

constantly judging other for what they have or don’t have, how big their house is, the

clothes they wear, what kind of job they hold, instead of how they contribute to

society. In a world of social media, most adults post only the positive view of their

lives, pictures of their families, vacations, and accomplishments because the world is

judging. No one wants to appear vulnerable or inferior because what is missing is

forgiveness and understanding that people are human and make mistakes. Just like the

people judging Zacchaeus, we are all capable of forgiveness and just like Zacchaeus,

capable of changing for the better.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Hello families,

A big thank you to the community for donating gifts to the sponsored family for Christmas. Most of the items that were requested were bought, wrapped, and sent to the family to open on Christmas Day. A copy of the thank you notes from Child and Family services for Thanksgiving and Christmas is downstairs under the calendar near the classrooms.

Also, a big thank you to the families who donated items for the IOCC school supply kits. Thirty kits were put together on the 29th of January by the older children in Sunday School. These kits will be boxed and shipped to the IOCC headquarters to be distributed to children who need them for school.

With Lent beginning this month, OCMC boxes will be handed out to every child to raise money for our missionaries around the world. These boxes will be collected in May. Please have the children put any extra change into these boxes.

Also, Lenten passports will be given to each child as they journey through Lent with the various services provided by the church.

Thank you, Sunday School staff
