Welcome to our2014 Grecian Festival!

A W e l c o m e f r o m r e v e r e n d d e A n n . P A l e o l o g o s

Every two years, for the last 38 years, the Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Community opens its doors and welcomes everyone to our grounds, to enjoy a bit of Hellenism with our family as we celebrate the Grecian Festival. We call this “philoxenia,” which literally means ‘friendship to all people’. For three days, we open our hearts and welcome you to be part of our Greek experience.

The Grecian Festival has been a highlight of Worcester and Central Massachusetts since 1976. It has grown to become one of the finest and the largest festival of New England, with attendance exceeding 25,000 people. We recognize and commemorate our forefathers, those Greek immigrants who came to the United States to create a new life, and in doing so, made lasting contributions to the economic, cultural and political development of Worcester through the establishment of our Greek Church 100 years ago on October 15, 1914.

I also would like to send my heartfelt appreciation to all those who have helped make the 2014 Grecian Festival possible. This includes our city and state officials, our neighbors, our wonderful sponsors, the media, and those who have offered “in kind” donations. These supportive commitments reflect a partnership with the Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Community as generous stewards of the Grecian Festival. Profound gratitude is in order to the chairmen Konstantinos “Gus” Giannakis and Paul Barber, all the committee chair-people, our numerous volunteers, our vendors, our participants, amongst others. A great welcome to all our guests who provide energy and enthusiasm that will make this festival truly special. I invite you all to experience our Hellenic Culture, Heritage and Faith. Most importantly to be embraced by God’s Love “Agape” and our love to all people - “philoxenia”.

Very Truly Yours in Christ,

Rev. Dean N. Paleologos

This year marks the 33rd year that Reverend Father Dean Paleologos has led our Community as spiritual leader. Father Dean has been recognized throughout his career as a clergyman with selfless dedication and for his outstanding contribution to the community, inspiring the communities he has served.

Father Dean was born in Peabody, MA on August 7, 1946 in the bedroom of his parents’ home. He is the son of Reverend Nicholas Paleologos of Blessed Memory and Presvytera Theodora (Talambecos) Paleologos. Throughout his early life, he and his family traveled and were blessed to live in many places. He attended schools in Columbia, SC; Jamestown, NY; Newburgh, NY; Albany, NY; Tulsa, OK, Canton, OH; and ultimately graduated from Marlboro High School in Marlboro, MA, as president of his senior class.

Father Dean earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies from Hellenic College in the spring of 1969 and a Masters of Divinity from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts in June, 1974. In June, 1992 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Worcester State College.

On June 1, 1974 Father Dean married the love of his life Cynthia Kaloyanides of Newton, Massachusetts, a 1974 graduate of Lesley University, Cambridge, MA. Father Dean and Presvytera Cynthia are blessed with three children and six grandchildren. Father Dean was ordained into the deaconate at Holy Cross Chapel, Brookline, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1974, by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of North & South America of Blessed Memory. He was ordained as a priest the next day at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, Massachusetts, honoring the wishes of His Eminence. On October 1, 1974 Father Dean began his ministry as assistant priest of SS. Constantine & Helen, Palos Hills, Illinois. After 7 years of service and an opportunity to move back to Massachusetts to be closer to family, Father Dean came to Worcester as the priest of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church on December 1, 1981. In 1985, Father Dean was instrumental in facilitating the elevation of Saint Spyridon Church to Saint Spyridon Cathedral, with Archbishop Iakovos’ blessing.

Father Dean serves with the campus ministry at five Worcester Colleges and has served in the local prison ministry. Among his many community memberships, Father Dean has served on the Worcester County Ecumenical Council, the Worcester County Interfaith Affiliate, Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Board of Directors and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, for which he was awarded the Brotherhood Citation in November, 1992. Father Dean also serves on the Council of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston and the Hellenic College Holy Cross Board of Trustees Executive Committee. In 2006, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston and Father Dean welcomed The Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester as a guest for the service of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs. This auspicious hierarchical event represented a true and significant ecumenical encounter by spiritual leaders of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches in Massachusetts.

In his active life of religious service, Father Dean has mentored many seminarians. His door is always open and his words of wisdom have touched many who have reached out to him for counseling. It is not unusual to find Father Dean visiting, praying, and giving communion to the infirmed in either hospitals or homes on a daily basis. He has quietly helped many individuals and families in need, both spiritually and financially. He is a supporter of many humanitarian causes and has helped raise substantial funds for these organizations.

Father Dean has been an ordained clergyman for 40 years and has served the Orthodox Church with love and humility. The community of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral wishes him many more spiritually rewarding years in his ministry and thanks him for his guidance, devotion, and leadership. AXIOS!

Thank Youfrom the Community

DedicationChris Fourkas

Sadly in August 2012 we lost one of the most beloved members of our community and active participants of the Grecian Festival since its inception, Chris Fourkas. Chris passed away at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Chris was an extremely active member of the Cathedral serving on the Budget, House, Building, Audit, and Festival Committees. Chris was also a member of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association), and served as its treasurer. Chris followed in his father Charles’ footsteps as the Cathedral’s Accountant, performing that service of stewardship completely free of charge for over 20 years. Many parishioners were unaware that in the winter months Chris plowed the Cathedral’s 2 lots and cleared the sidewalks, also completely free of charge for over 20 years. The savings to the Cathedral for that alone places Chris as one of the top Stewards in the Cathedral’s 100 year history. For the Festival, Chris was the first and last person seen as he coordinated and led the facilities setup and breakdown. He was the Festival’s liaison for permits from the Fire Dept and street closures with the City as well as security with the Reserve Deputy Sheriffs of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department which Chris was a member.

During the Festival weekend it was not uncommon for Chris to be on the grounds until 4:00 a.m. making sure that equipment was still operating correctly and that everything was in place for the next day. Once the setup of the Festival was completed Chris would put on another hat and he would oversee the collection and depositing of monies received during the Festival. To many in the Parish what Chris will be remembered for most was that he was always present at the Cathedral, assisting in any way he could and always with a smile.

Chris loved the church, his family, and his friends and he took an immense pride in representing the Greek Orthodox community to Worcester and Central Massachusetts. We join Chris’ family in their sadness for his untimely loss but we take solace in the knowledge that his legacy and memory will be eternal.

The Grecian Festival celebrates our Greek faith and heritage in so many ways. Greek heritage encompasses many aspects of Hellenism including our art and culture, which many believe is our heart and soul. At this festival we hope to enhance your festival experience by offering many aspects of art and culture for your enjoyment. We also thank our art and culture sponsors for their show of support in the Grecian Festival through our Agora Raffle.

cATHedrAl ToursOne of the highlights of our festival is the guided tours of our beautiful Cathedral. Allow the flicker of the candles to ignite your soul as the sparkle of the chandeliers reflect the stained glass, opening you to an experience of faith and spirituality. Light a candle, say a prayer for a love one, or just sit quietly and allow the strains of life to leave you for just a little while.

100 Year CelebrationThis year marks the 100th anniversary of our church, Saint Spyridon in Worcester. The community was officially established on October 15, 1914 through a constitution enacted at a meeting hall located at 9 Bartlett Street in Worcester. For the first years Beaver Hall at 69 Grafton Street was used for Church services with meetings held at 9 Bartlett Street, later at 126 Green Street, and still later at the AOH Hall on Trumbull Street.

The first Greeks arrived in Worcester in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s, for the most part it was single men who were looking for a better way of life due to political, economic, and religious persecution caused under Ottoman rule and as a result of the many difficulties in pre and post-World War I Europe. By 1914 there were between 3,500-4,000 Greeks in Worcester but only about 25 families; the rest were either bachelors or their families remained in Greece. Once the early arrivals to Worcester had jobs many then returned to Greece, married and returned to Worcester with their families.

The name “St. Spyridon” was chosen for the church for two reasons. Most of the initial Greek Immigrants in Worcester came from Epirus in Northwest Greece. Since Corfu, where the body of St. Spyridon is still preserved is located

across from Epirus, they named their church in his honor and memory. Also factories were closed

very few days in the early 1900’s, Christmas Day was one of the few days they were closed. Saint Spyridon’s Feast Day under the old calendar fell on Christmas Day and this allowed the first Greek immigrant workers to celebrate their Saint’s Day without the loss of a day’s wage of work.

From 1915 to 1918 the idea to buy a site to build a church was first conceived with the finding of a suitable location entrusted to a Board of Directors. In order to buy land it was necessary to have the community recognized officially by the state and this was obtained from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on September 26, 1916. The purposes of the community appearing on the charter submitted were “establishing and maintaining a Greek Church for the worship of God by Greeks and persons of Grecian descent in Worcester and vicinity, according to the dogma and tradition of the Eastern Orthodox

Christian Church; and establishing and maintaining a Greek school and a place for reading room, library and lectures.”

The original choice for a suitable site for the church was Orange Street, though others thought that the plot should be in another section of the city. During these early years there was no regular dues. Instead monies were collected from the community where one cent was paid to the Church for every loaf of bread purchased. A church collector visited the houses and collected the money based upon notes made by the baker. The amount collected for the community totaled as high as $250 to $300 a month using this process.

Due to political differences emanating from Greece some members of the community withdrew from the St. Spyridon Community and in March 1917 founded another church under the name of “Sts. Taxiarchai,” with services at Trumbull Street. At the beginning of 1918 many members of St. Spyridon’s community took steps to unite both communities before

buying a plot for a church. The decision to buy a plot of land for the erection of a new church was reached in a General Meeting of March 22, 1918 and after considering many different sites it was finally decided to buy land on Orange Street. At the end of 1918 the Archbishop of Athens sent his assistant to Worcester, who succeeding in bringing the two separate communities together under one name, Saint Spyridon with services held at one location, Trumbull Street.

13

In 1923, with $15,000 borrowed from the Five Cents Savings Bank an Architect was hired, plans developed and construction began in 1924 for the Saint Spyridon church located on Orange Street. Consecration services were held on May 3, 1925. The construction of the church cost $65,000 with $30,000 held in mortgage.

Political differences which arose from the elections in Greece again brought about the separation of some families from the community and the establishment of another church, “The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” whose members held services at Front Street near Trumbull Street. Fortunately, that separation of the community did not last long with two communities combining into St. Spyridon in 1928.

The community quickly began to outgrow the Orange Street site and in the 1940’s many alterations were made in the

church. The Sanctuary had to be shortened in order to gain more space in the church; this proved without a doubt that the Community was in need of a larger church. Different committees examined lots and sites until the present lot on Elm, Russell, and Cedar Streets was found for the erection of a new church and other community buildings. After many inquiries, the Russell St. lot was purchased with house and garage for a sum of thirty-five thousand dollars.

The first “Historical” as it is quoted in the minutes, meeting of the Building Fund Committee of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church was held on Thursday, September 7, 1944, at 8 p.m. at the Coronado Hotel under the chairmanship of Constantine Moschos. The following were in attendance; Charles Kotsilimbas Davis, George Andresen, Angelus Cotsidas, Theodore Tonna, George Tsagarelis, Dennis Tavlas, John Alexander, George Pallas, and John Tsouros. A great enthusiasm ensued for the construction of a new church and a collection was begun with a sum of thirty thousand dollars realized from the above committee members. In November 1946 it was decided in a general meeting of the Community to sell the Orange St. church to the National Polish Catholic Church, with the terms that St. Spyridon continue services at Orange St. until the new church was completed.

A reorganization of the Building Fund Committee took place in April, 1950 and architects were then called to submit plans. Among them was Christopher P. Kantianis of Springfield, MA. Mr. Kantianis submitted plans for a church with 600 seating capacity plus an auditorium under the main body of the church. The plans were given to contractors for bids, and the R. L. Whipple Company of Worcester submitting the lowest bid was awarded the job. The contract between the Committee members and the Contractors was signed on October 23, 1950, and excavation started immediately. The cornerstone was officially laid on May 13, 1951. The new Saint Spyridon Church on Russell St. was officially opened on April13, 1952 with consecration services on May 30, 1954.

The 1960’s saw the realization of another dream for the founders of the church; classroom and auditorium space for ministries with the erection of a Community Center; Cotsidas Auditorium, Tonna Room, Greek/Sunday School classrooms, and office area. In Sept 1965 the Tonna Room was the sight for the first ecumenical dialogue between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches in the United States, led by Archbishop Iakovos of Blessed Memory and Bishop Bernard Flanagan. The 1970’s saw the establishment of the first Ethnic Festival in New England with our Grecian Festival during the bicentennial year of 1976. In 1985 Saint Spyridon Church was elevated to a Cathedral by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston. 1994 saw the opening of Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, through the joint efforts of the twelve Eastern Orthodox Christian Communities in Central Massachusetts. Following in the footsteps of the founders of the church in July 2004, spearheaded by a donation made by the late Charles Kotseas, a new Building Committee was formed who’s purpose was to upgrade the Community Center. That work was completed in 2012 with the renovation of the Cotsidas Auditorium, classrooms, kitchen, rest rooms, entry areas, Cedar St lot, and hall below the Cathedral.

Today our Cathedral is situated in one of the most beautiful settings in the city overlooking Elm Park. The Parish is vibrant and growing with a long list of ministries to include the Orthodox Food Pantry, Philoptochos, GOYA, Little Angels, Seniors, Daughters of Penelope, Youth Basketball, Board of Education Certified Pre School, Greek Language School, and Religious Education.

The words expressed at the 1954 consecration to the Parish’s future generations still ring true. “Be worthy of your predecessors. They sacrificed much, so that they might leave a beautiful church for you. Remember them, imitate them, and keep your church and your religion alive in the land of America, their adopted country but your country by right of birth. You have a priceless heritage and treasure in your religion and in the traditions of your forefathers. Benefit spiritually from them. Walk in the way of life with Christ as your guiding light. Perpetuate the old teachings. Enter proudly but with humility into the Temple of God, the Church of Saint Spyridon.”

The orthodox christian faithOrthodox Christians hold true to a tradition which has been handed down unchanged from the time of the Apostles. For over one thousand years from the Day of Pentecost, Orthodoxy was the only Christian tradition. Orthodoxy is practiced the same way today as it was in the Church of the catacombs, the Church of the Apostles, the Fathers, and martyrs. While some may find the services, traditions, or practices of Orthodoxy to be “old fashioned”, or “not in keeping with today’s society in America”, it is this very factor that gives Orthodoxy its inherent strength. Orthodoxy has always held true to those values and principles given to mankind by God, and through his Son our savior JESUS CHRIST, rather than mold and change its beliefs and principles to accommodate an ever changing society. While it may be practiced in many languages throughout the world, the principles, traditions, and liturgies are the same. In closely watching the Divine Liturgy, visitors can readily see the origins and elements of our worship service, such as the Nicene Creed, the Epistle, Gospel readings and the Lord’s Prayer. Orthodoxy is an inheritance: the Bible, the Creed, the decrees of the Ecumenical Councils, the service books, the worship, and the art have formed the “Tradition” of the Church.

saint spyridonOur Cathedral is named after Saint Spyridon, who died in the 4th century. He was born in Cyprus and is honored in both the Eastern and Western Churches. He was compassionate and loving; a humble shepherd, Bishop of Trimythus, confessor of the faith during times of persecution, and an outstanding teacher of Orthodoxy at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325. Saint Spyridon is noted for the miracles he performed during his life and is known for his great piety, honesty, and gentleness. When you walk into the Cathedral you will enter the Narthex and see a glass display case with the slippers of Saint Spyridon, given to us by the Bishop of Corfu. The body of Saint Spyridon has remained completely intact. The Holy Relics are found in the church in Kerkyra on the island of Corfu, Greece. Each year, on the day of his commemoration, December 12, the slippers are found completely worn out. The serving priests change the saint’s shoes every year, only to find them worn out again the next year. It is the belief of Orthodox Christians that Saint Spyridon continues walking today performing miracles.

Combining the culinary experience and love of Greek Food Paul and Melina, gladly accepted the offer to once again collaborate on this festival’s menu design and offerings. After both graduating from Boston University, Paul and Melina were married at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and made Worcester their home. Having operated the Flying Rhino for 15 years their passion for food is reflected in their menu seasonally. The menu is inspired by the Rhino flying around the world grabbing eclectic dishes that are showcased in this well-diverse menu. They are proud to be part of the rich Hellenic Community as well as greater Worcester County.

Dust lamb shanks in seasoned flour and sear on all sides until golden brown. Take out of pan and add next 5 ingredients and lightly saute. Once vegetables are soft add red wine and reduce by half. Next add all other ingredients and loosely cover pan then throw in a 325 degree oven for about 2 1/2 hrs or until fall of bone tender. Once cooked remove shanks from pan and keep warm. Place pan on stove top and reduce sauce for a thicker consistency then add over shank and enjoy.

Val was raised in the restaurant industry working by her parent’s side from as far back as she can remember. Val’s father emigrated from Greece to this country, working his way up from a dishwasher to the owner and operator of several pizzerias. Val was encouraged by her strong following of loyal clientele and avid supporters to expand her business. She purchased her present location at 75 Reservoir Street in 1996 — going from a small storefront pizzeria to a 7,200-square-foot restaurant and bar.

Over the last two decades Val has evolved as a restaurateur with creative, sophisticated cuisine.

The accolades have followed with many reviews and awards including Best Seafood Restaurant and Best Family Restaurant, and Val’s crowning glory being inducted into Les Amis d’Escoffier Society of Massachusetts.
