Logan’s Essay

One of our past students and COJO Divers, Logan Penney recently submitted an essay in school about his experiences SCUBA Diving. He was nice enough to share it with us and we thought we would share it with you!!

Thanks Logan, this was awesome!!

Scuba Diving

During September, we completed the following courses

PADI Sidemount Course PADI Open Water Course PADI Rescue Diver Course Enriched Air Nitrox Course

Great Job to All newly certified and those who are continuing their education!! WOW, what a month!!

Have you ever felt like floating around

weightlessly like an astronaut?

Imagine interacting with colorful fish

and other sea life. Scuba diving can

make this feeling come true. The

training is relatively easy, and the

sights are amazing.

COJO’s MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

The training for scuba diving starts out with an online study with an exam

at the end. You will learn about the equipment for diving and how to use it,

you will also learn about the safety of diving. You will then go to a pool to

do skills such as regulating your breathing and flooding your mask and

clearing it. After four pool dives you are now ready for the exciting part, the

open water dives! Your instructor will take you to a real dive environment

such as; a quarry, lake, or the ocean. This is where you will decide if scuba

diving is for you or not.

Scuba diving is an extreme sport with its own dangers. A few of the risks

are; ear squeezes which happens if you descend too quickly,

decompression sickness is caused by increased underwater pressure

where bubbles form in your blood and can cause painful joints and/or

death. Defective equipment is another risk for divers. You should maintain

your equipment and have your regulators checked yearly by a trained

professional to prevent problems on your dives.

You can dive all over the world and take in the sights that you’ll never see

on land. The fish and plant life can be very colorful and they come in many

different shapes and sizes. Many of the sea creatures are curious and may

come check you out or they may try to defend their territory. The beauty

and colors of the plant life and coral will take your breath away. There are

also sunken ships you may want to explore. You may even find unique

treasures on the bottom floor!

As you can see scuba diving has some risk to it, but with proper training it

can also be the most amazing adventure of your life!

Excursions This Past Month

Lake Simcoe Dive Extravaganza!

During September, Joe was near Barrie Ontario and took the time to do some

fresh water diving in Lake Simcoe. He dove Big Bay Point, a beautiful dive with

tons of Bass, Pearch and … Garden Gnomes. It was an awesome circuit laid out

by the local club for divers to dive safely and have a blast! Thanks to Jim Mills for

that one.

One final dive was the Johnson’s Beach Dive where Joe Teamed up with Marc

Larson, Jenna Smith, Marc Duguay and Marla Haring and, after some great info

and a site brief by Aquateer Nicole AuCoin they headed off for a fantastic dive on

a Fish Habitat made from discarded Christmas Trees. This was a great dive with

TONS of HUGE Bass and Pearch..And, Jerry I think there may have been a

Lumpfish!! No picture to prove it to Connie though!

Thanks to all the Base Borden Aquateers, this was a fantastic Excursion!!

He also dove the JC Morrison. This was a

fantastic little wreck that was built in 1854 and

sunk in 1857. There is still about half of one of

the paddle wheels left and it has many 3D parts

such as the hull to look at. You can see the

definitive effects of the fire that brought her

down when you look at the wooden structure.

Thanks to RJ Wilson for the great diving on

that!!

Eastport Pirate Festival

What a weekend!! A special thanks to Meg McGarvey ("The Commons Eastport") for arranging to cordoned off "diver parking" next to the old cannery building so divers had parking for the day and direct access to the dive site! Even with the seas building we managed 2 great dives on Saturday at Eastport. Conditions were actually fantastic underwater, with 20ft+ visibility. We introduced a few divers new to the site and they were impressed.. lots of critters to see. Thanks to John, Roger, Claire and Greg for the dives! This was the 7th annual Pirate Festival in Eastport and it was a fantastic turn-out for the city.. we'll be back next year :)

Picture of the Month

Narrative by Nick Thebeau: I took that photo (Eagle Rays) myself (Nicholas

Thebeau), in Oahu- Hawaii. The dive site is called Nashua (60 ft, max

depth), through Dive Oahu. It is a wreck dive. As soon as I hit bottom, I

immediately saw the Eagle Rays swim by in the distance. Knowing full well

that it is uncommon to see them in groups, I quickly checked my air (had

over 2800 pounds left), and decided to follow- leaving (temporarily) the

group. I spent about 25 minutes chasing these guys down, until I realized I

could just barely see the Wreck; which I then decided to regroup. What I

didn't notice, until I uploaded the pictures, is the massive chain and anchor

that you can see on the ocean floor. I call the Picture "Family".

Beautiful picture Nick!! For his picture, Nick has won 5 free air fills. Come in any time and get your gift card Nick.

Keep sending in those pictures!!
