Our Annual Step Down Dinner was a fun

time! I’d like to give a big THANK YOU to

Bob, Camille and Scott for organizing

it this year. What a great venue the Union

Hotel in Los Alamos was! Be sure to stop

in for dinner when it’s open on weekends

and say hi to Ray. The staff was accommo-

dating to our large group, the dinner deli-

cious, and it was gratifying to see how

many of our members made the time to

come on a busy election day.

Honored guests included District Governor

Luz Maria Ortiz-Smith and her husband

E. Russell and Group 12 Rep Mark Jack-

son. Fitting our Step Down into their busy

schedules was no small task! I feel privi-

leged to have worked for Rotary under

their guidance and inspiration. And of

course, our own “Mr. Rotary,” Past DG

Ned Rickett and his wife Francine,

graced us with their presence and wisdom.

Several members were honored with Paul

Harris Fellowships: Janos Demeter, Roy

Dugger, Heather Weare, Susan Rees, Fred

Pratt, Scott Dunn, Ned Rickett, and Vir-

ginia Souza in memory of David J. Souza.

Our Community Honoree John Everett

and his wife Ernestina were there. We

won’t hold it against him that he’s a Ki-

wanian, since he shares a common mission

to support our community.

Please congratulate the award recipients

recognized for their dedication to our club

and Rotary:

John Henning received an engraved

watch commemorating 14 years as board

member, in seriously time-consuming roles

as Secretary and President. Although he is

stepping down from board membership,

we’ll be hearing more from him as he coor-

dinates the Australian Group Study Ex-

change (GSE) Team visit this coming Octo-

ber.

Joe Goldberg was recognized as our

“Rookie of the Year” for his enthusiastic

and creative contributions to our club as a

Red Badge holder. More will be coming

from Joe as he heads our Fall “Funraiser”

sponsorship committee.

And our highest honor, Rotarian of

the Year, was awarded to (drumroll,

please…) Frank Culley. I can’t think of

a member who has embraced the tenets of

Rotary more fully than Frank. He enthusi-

astically recruits members as Membership

Chair, relays information as Sunshine

Chair, keeps us informed through our

newsletter and website, keeps us educated

through his capacity as North County Re-

gional PRLS Coordinator, takes photos

and publicizes our club activities, and is

always willing to do whatever is asked of

him. I am honored to count him as a

friend.

If you didn’t attend, you missed a hilarious

roasting of our past prez by our own come-

dic duo, Gillian and Carlie. Thank you for

the kind words and plaque I received. It’s

exciting and bittersweet to be leaving our

club in Bob and his board’s capable hands.

More award certificates will be given at

our June lunch meetings – please plan to

be there. Let’s make Tuesdays the best day

of the work week!

Sincerely,

Your almost defunct fearless leader,

Susan

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria

Louie the Louse, so named because he

was always in other peoples' hair, called

Benny from Bayonne into his of-

fice. "Hey, Benny, I'm so glad you could

come out here to do a little job for

me. How are things in Bayonne?" Louie

asked. "Pretty much the same, Louie,"

Benny said, "You know we have the usual

things going on, drugs, prostitution, extor-

tion, murder, gambling. And that's just

the city government. Our mob operations

are doing well too. I guess things ain't so

good with you, or you wouldn't have

asked me to come out and do a job for

you." Louie started, "I got this guy in my

organization, Johnny the Juke-

box." Benny interrupted, "Johnny the

Jukebox?" Louie answered, "Ya, he

sings a different tune depending upon

who's feeding him quarters. He's the

problem. He's been with me a long time,

and he knows a lot, but now I find out he's

been hanging out with this new syndicate

from Chicago that's moving in on my terri-

tory." "What's the name of this syndi-

cate?" asked Benny. "Rotarians," replied

Louie, "Their Godfather is some guy

named Pauly Harris. They got operations

in the mid-west, the east, even in other

parts of the world. But they ain't getting

to my neighborhood. I figure they are

trying to get inside my organization so

they can take over my operation. Johnny

has been meeting with them, and he did-

n't say nothing to me about no meetings. I

figure he must be spilling his guts to

them, and trying to hide it from

me." Benny chimed it, "So you want me

to teach Johnny the Jukebox a les-

son?" Louie answered, "I want you to

send a message." Benny inquired, "You

was thinking about a little patella redistri-

bution?" Louie exploded, "I don't want

you to deliver a postcard. I want you to

send a message." Benny asked, "You

want me to bump him off then?" Louie

explained, "In a perfect world you would

grab him, torture him till he cries for his

momma, kill him, have a priest bring him

back to life, torture him again, then kill

him again. That's a message. Nobody's

going to play me for a patsy. Under-

stand?" "OK, I understand. You want

the problem eliminated. Is someone go-

ing to finger this guy for me?" inquired

Benny. "Sure," began Louie, "Vinnie the

Virgin is intimately acquainted with

Johnny." "But Louie, I thought Vinnie got

married several years ago. Why do you

still call him Vinnie the Virgin?" asked

Benny. Louie explained, "He did get mar-

ried, Benny, but his wife convinced him

that having sex meant that he handed his

paycheck over to her. Every payday Vin-

nie comes home and his wife pours him a

drink. She asks him if he wants to have

sex and he says, 'Sure.' He gets his pay-

check and gives it to her. They smoke

cigarettes with smiles on their

faces." Benny expressed his concern,

"This guy's a couple tacos short of a com-

bination plate. Are you sure you can trust

him to finger the right guy?" Louie laid it

out straight, "I know Vinnie ain't no gen-

ius, but he knows Johnnie, and he's ex-

tremely loyal to me, and he tells . . . me .

. . everything. Vinnie can finger Johnny

for you tomorrow and you can have a few

days to make him wish he had never

been born. I want you to deliver his dead

body to the Board Meeting of the Ro-

tary Club of Santa Maria at the office of

Bob Frias, on Tuesday, June 15th at

5:30 PM. One more thing,

Benny. Johnny has a new gold watch

that these Rotarians gave him. I want

you to break it at the same time that you

kill him. We want to let Pauly Harris know

that it is time for him to go back to Chi-

cago."

Fellow members, It is that time of year where we make our push to get all members involved in a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) pro-gram. Of course, the Club would love to have all of you just write a check for $1,000.00 and become a PHF. That is one quick way to do it and if you are so inclined, just let me know and we will get it done. The alternate method and much easier on the wallet, is what we have

been doing with many of our mem-bers. We get ten people to agree to par-ticipate in a Sustaining Membership Group (SMG); this is where you agree to contribute $100.00 per year for ten years and each year we draw one name out of the ten and they become the PHF for that year. To entice people to participate, the club will kick in a $1,000.00 in the first year to match your groups thousand and we draw two names from the hat. In this manner, the PHF only costs $900.00. We

presently have five groups involved. In the past you may have received the above letter, however, we have had indi-viduals drop from the Club and their slots for the above five groups are partially paid for and if you are so inclined, I can insert you at a reduced cost. It may not make sense, so if you might be inter-ested, please give me a call and we can

go over the particulars.

Rotary Club of SM

MONTHLY BILLING PLAN EFF 7/01/2010

SUMMARY

Convert from quarterly billing to monthly billing effective 07/01/10

Bills sent beginning of month for expenses (incl. meals) incurred prior month.

The first monthly bill (July) will be a transition bill. Since meals are no longer “pre-billed”, there

will be no meals billed on this bill. Meal adjustments and balances from prior quarter will

appear on July bill. July bill will also include $120 for annual dues.

WHY:

1) Improve cash flow to club

2) Easier for members to manage accounts

3) More current billing information

4) Help define cost of membership

5) Help keep costs more consistent & predictable

6) Reduce or eliminate member concerns about billing accuracy and billing disputes

7) Simplify current system of pre-billing meals.

BILL COMPONENTS

MONTHLY: (These charges will appear each month on your bill)

Meals: Based on actual meals consumed the prior month. $17.25 “eater”, $8.25 “non-eater”.

Meals paid for at meeting would not show on billing.

Fines: Fines will be billed at $8.33 per month ($100 per year).

Brags, Birthdays, Anniversaries: as incurred from prior month, unless paid at meeting. You will

be asked to sign an “IOU” if you want these added to your bill.

Polio +: $2.50 per month ($30 annual)

Exemption Badge: $2 per month

Club Admin Expense: $5 per month to cover miscellaneous club expenses (convention costs,

district assemblies and conferences, tax returns, etc) that have previously gone unfunded. This

will minimize the percentage of money from Funraiser proceeds that goes to club expenses vs.

charitable gifts.

8

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria

ANNUAL: (These charges will appear once per year on your bill)

Annual Dues ($120): will appear on your July bill.

Paul Harris Groups: If you are in a group, your $100 annual commitment per group will appear

on your January bill.

NOTES:

No ticketed events, sponsorships or auction commitments will be billed. These shall be paid in

advance of the event and collected by respective committee. (FUNrasier, Step-Down,

Winemaker dinners, joint meetings, etc.)

You may elect to receive your monthly billing by email (preferred) or regular mail.

You may elect to join the “Century Club” if you do not want to be “fined” at meeting, but no

longer need to pre-pay $100. This will be collected monthly.

Some members choose to be fined more than $100 per year and will be given that option.

Members are asked to pay in a timely manner, see “Aging of Accounts” section below.

AGING OF ACCOUNTS

Billings will be sent the first week of the month and payments are “due upon receipt”.

If any amount becomes past due 60 days from the original billing date, the treasurer shall send

separate notification advising that amount must be paid within 5 business days, otherwise

billing privileges will be suspended and all subsequent expenses incurred will be on a “cash only”

basis until such time the account balance is brought to zero.

If any amount becomes past due 90 days from the original billing date, unless the account

balance is immediately brought to zero, the member must agree to a board approved payment

plan in a prompt and timely manner.

If any amount becomes past due 120 days from the original billing date AND a board approved

payment plan is not in place, OR if the member has failed to abide by the terms of a board

approved payment plan, the delinquent member may be terminated from the club.
