President’s Report
It is with great pleasure that I present my annual report for the year 2018-2019.
When I put my hand up for President my aim was to do something different to what I
was doing- being a passive member at most times. I wanted a different Rotary
experience and let me tell you it was a baptism by fire! Our Club treasurer was not
keeping well for some time and our finances were in disarray. The members did not
know what to expect from a “new kid on the block”. But I had faith we would pull
through and I am grateful for the wisdom of Past District Governors and Past
Presidents in the Club. Members put their hand up to help me solve problems which
at times looked insurmountable, slowly and steadily we chipped away and at the end
President Elect’s Training Seminar, May 2018
I am happy to say we have managed to set our house in order. We are now in a
position where we can get involved in a large project which will enable our Rotary
Club to make a significant impact in our community.
The day of reckoning, changeover, June 2018
[3]
Some of the goals I had set as for 2018-2019 were
Reconstruction of Accounts 2017-2018
Getting accounts audited before December 2018 and submitting the audited
accounts to the Department of Commerce
Updating signatories for our Bank Accounts
Revised Club constitution and Bye laws
Standardise the club logo and letter-head
Get Public Liability Insurance for our markets. Up to this time Rotarians were
covered but the Rotary Insurance wanted an additional $6 dollars from each
stall holder from complete cover. This would have killed the markets. This was
a long pending issue and we have managed to solve this problem this year
District Governor Robyn Yates visited our Club in October. A cheque of $500 dollars was presented towards
Polio Eradication
Updating our ABN details which have been pending for the last 9 years
Club Banner and President’s Board
To get involved in the Rotary in Western Australia Driver Education Program
To present the Charter to the Interact Club of Harrisdale Senior High School
To establish a sinking Fund so that we have a backup in case of loss of our
Primary fund raising activity
I am happy to say that we have achieved all these goals and also managed to get
involved in four worthwhile projects. We donated $2000 dollars to the Queensland
Flood Appeal, $5000 dollars to Interplast and $3000 dollars to The Sri Lankan Dairy
Project. We also took part in the distribution of Qantas Blankets to the homeless and
the needy people. This year we raised a record of $109,172 at our markets doing
better than the long standing 1998 record.

Father’s Day was celebrated in the Club with a good turnout
With new members, Teresa and Naomi
Induction Certificate presented to Naomi Green
[5]
It was a pleasure to welcome the following new members Taonga Chintu Pheri,
Teresa Tay and Naomi Green. Unfortunately, the following members resigned during
the course of the year- Ken Glasson, Renee Silvester, Mike Sanders and Peter
Gregory.
The Indian and Italian Consul’s Visited our Club as Guest Speakers
[6]
Thanks to our Program coordinator, Phil Cordery, we had a very interesting guest
speakers. We had the Indian and Italian Consul’s as guest speakers. We held joint
meetings with the Rotary Club of Kenwick, Rotary Club of Armadale and The Rotary
Club of Byford and Districts. Father’s day was celebrated in style and the Club Bingo
night was a big hit. The ANZAC Day service was very meaningful and well
represented.
We held joint meeting with the Rotary Clubs of Armadale, Kenwick and Byford and Districts
President Elect, Ric McDonald did most of the heavy lifting this year and I could rely
on him to find innovative solutions to problems. Our two past District governors Jodie
Sparks and Phil Cordery assisted me during the year with suggestions and helpful
advice. I believe that we are fortunate as a Club to have the experience and wisdom
available to tap from time to time. Past President John Stockbridge stepped into the
Role of interim Club Services Director and was always at hand to help out. The Club
has been fortunate in having a hard working and enthusiastic Board this year and I
thank each and every one of them, Tony Italiano, Lloyd Dungey, Julie Ninnis, Ric
McDonald, Dom Manno, Jodie Sparks, Peter Gregory, Grant Buxton and Andy
Hopper, for their support and contributions over the year. Secretary Jodie managed
to present creditable minutes, Ted Evans helped in upgrading our Bye Laws and
Dom Manno did a professional job with our accounts and finances. Nancy Kilkenny
did a very fine job as sergeant and fines master.
Under Ric’s stewardship, I believe that the Club can deliver a worthwhile and
appropriate project for the community in the coming year. As President, it has been
an interesting and rewarding period as the Club has grown together. To all members,
I extend my sincere appreciation for their support to the Board.

Finally, I take this opportunity to wish Ric and the new board a very interesting and
enjoyable year. I know that with his depth of experience in rotary he will do well and
guide the Club to a bigger and better future,

VOCATIONAL COMMITTEE REPORT 2018/2019
The Vocational Committee this year had the usual projects for our committee. All has gone to plan
and the committee worked well together.
Shine On Awards – As always Phil Cordery organised this event and it was extremely successful. The
only funds used for this project were the meals and drinks for nominees and guests
Ron Sloan Endeavour Awards – This year we introduced another school to this project so we had
Thornlie Senior High School, Canning Vale College and Thornlie Christian High School. There were 2
award recipients from each school and all received $500 per person for the 2020 school year. We
also paid for the meals for award recipients and their family. We also had trophies made by
Sheridans Badges & Engraving and they were $68 each plus a total $80 initial artwork and set up
cost.
Business Excellence Award – We had 3 nominees this year – Kudah Vetinary Centre, Nominated by
Sandy. Welshpool Signarama, nominated by Neville & Bower Electrics nominated by Simon. For this
project we presented the awardees with a trophy and they were $68 each plus a one off $80 initial
aartwork and set up cost.
Interact Club – Our committee also donated $500 to Interact as the lady who works with the
breakfast program had put a lot of her own money into the project, so as it was such a great project,
we donated $500 to help
Our committee – Murray Thorpe, Rob Pannell, Ted Evans and Zaneta worked together as a great
team.
Thank you

FUND RAISING DIRECTORS REPORT
2018-2019
The function of the fund raising directorate is to raise the funds required by the club, each year, to meet the clubs Community requirements. Again this was achieved from our market activity in running the Bring’N’Buy activities at the Metro Maddington shopping centre. This year’s income figure have been affected by the fact that there were only 3 Sundays when it rained more than just the occasional shower – and could be considered “washouts”. Normally we would average 7 There were also 53 Sundays in this year – that has undoubtably helped This year has also seen fewer Sundays “pushing “ the $4000 income level but has seen greater numbers in excess of $3000 The BNB continues to receive wide support by both buyers and sellers As at the time of writing this report ( 1st June) the club has earned income Markets that indicates we will exceed the record year of $108, 638 Maddington Metro Good relationships continue with the management of the Maddington Metro shopping centre, where the cooperative atmosphere continues. A changed in ownership of the centre brought with it a policy change, where by the centre started charging the club for use of the facilities - SDRC expresses its sincere thanks to the Management and staff of Maddington metro and their Community attitude. For without their invaluable assistance the community would be worse off and SDRC’s work would suffer. In the years we have been in “partnership” with Metro Maddington, over $2, 400,000 has been raised for various Rotary projects Bring’N’Buy teams Currently, the BnB Teams do a six week roster cycle and my personal thanks go to the team leaders, members and member’s partners, for their efforts in ensuring that Bring’N’Buy continues to be a pleasant and effective way for the club to raise funds for the local community.
[18]
The way in which members volunteer to assist so readily is a hallmark of this club and certainly contributes to the ease of Fund raising. Finally my thanks to Rotarian Andy Hopper PHF for his assistance and counsel. Andy’s commitment to BnB every Sunday morning is exceptional and, without which, an extra workload would fall on others Colin Waters

International committee this year comprised of;
Peter Gregory (director)
Grant Buxton (deputy director)
John Rechichi
Ted Evans
Patrick Bartlett
Hans Groot
Willy Bohmer
Sadly, we saw the departure of our director Peter Gregory who left our club in May
We are greatly indebted to Peter for his tireless work and supreme effort as a director and in securing our outbound exchange student for this year.
Our outbound Rotary student Georgia Marsh departed for Germany bound for Düsseldorf on 19th January and is expected to return back to Australia on the 16th of November.
Our ability to receive an incoming student is still being investigated pending securing a suitable school and sourcing further host families.
Other projects supported by our committee include;
1. $2000 to fund a further water project in Timor Leste.
This follows two previous highly successful water projects involving our
Rotarian Ted Evans.
Our commitment is in partnership with several other rotary clubs with the total
cost estimate of this project being in the order of $ US 12,000.
2 Following a club visit by a district representative our committee agreed to
support $2000 funding towards Shelter Box.
3 Our committee has agreed to sponsor two aspiring local teenage golfers to attend golfing events in USA.
This commitment has come via our involvement with the Gosnells Golf Club
and involves funding to the tune of $1000.
4 . We have made contact with Rotarian Somchai Chiaranaipanit of the Kaen
Koon rotary club in northeastern Thailand who are looking at partner clubs
[20]
to sponsor a global grant to set up literacy libraries in remote Thailand.
This project is expected to get going in the next Rotary year and so our
involvement has been deferred until then.
Once again I would like to thank our team for what has been a challenging year .
While further challenges await us I am confident in our developing expertise.
I wish the incoming director all the best for the incoming year.

Paul Harris Fellow Recognition 2018-2019
It is a great pleasure to recognise Mrs Helen Balding, with a Paul Harris Fellow
on behalf of Rotary Club of Southern Districts, in recognition of her outstanding
leadership and tireless efforts in working with and supporting students in our
community. Helen, is the Head of Secondary, at Thornlie Christian College a
position she has held for over 18 years. I have been associated with her for the past
11 years and have admired her tireless efforts to meet the needs of each and every
child in the secondary school. She puts in long hours at work and goes well beyond
her call of duty to empower and equip the youth entrusted in her care. Many a time
when I go home from our Rotary meet there is only one car in the college car park
and that is Helen’s!
But what is also staggering is how the efforts of one person, one particular person,
can truly make a difference in the life of the people particularly the youth in our
community. Helen not only looks after staff welfare but also takes the lead in
resolving issues between teachers and parents or students and teachers in a very
professional way. She is the chief organiser of all senior college extra-curricular
activities like the college ball, leadership camps, river cruise, professional
development days, subject information evenings, valedictory dinner and college
assemblies to name just a few. All these activities are organised in a very
professional manner with attention for the smallest detail. She puts in the maximum
work and is always miles ahead of anybody assisting in these events in terms of
work share. I have never seen her frustrated with the quantum of work she does,
always has a smile in her face and invariably puts up her hand to assist in spite of
her unforgiving schedule. I don’t remember her taking a day off from work and she
[26]
has always placed the needs of students and staff of the college before her own.
She is an asset to Thornlie Christian College, the community, the state and the
country. Such unflinching dedication to duty is a rarity and she deserves recognition
for her untiring efforts for students in our community. She has never looked for any
rewards and accolades and is a very humble person.
Because of these efforts, Helen has earned the respect and gratitude of those for
whom and with whom she serves, her church family, her neighbourhood residents,
and her peers at Thornlie Christian College. Helen Balding, epitomises the Rotary
Motto of Service above Self and the Rotary Club of Southern Districts has proudly
contributed a $1000 dollars on her behalf to the Rotary Foundation. May She
continue to be a blessing to the Youth in our community.
Congratulations Helen!
I now call upon PDG Jodie Sparks to please come forward to present the Paul Harris
pin and Certificate to Helen Balding.
Ric McDonald has been a member of the Rotary Club of Southern Districts since
2014. He has had a long association with Rotary and Apex. From 1987-1990 he was
a member of the Scarborough Rotary Club. From 2005-2014 he was a member of
the Darling Range Rotary Club where he served two and a half terms as President.
Over the past year the Club have benefited immensely from Ric experience and
expertise. When I started my year as President we had some huge issues to
overcome. Ric put his hand up to help and put in bucket loads of work reconstructing
our accounts of the previous year, took the initiative to get them audited and made
sure we met the deadlines set by the Department of Commerce and our obligations
under the Charitable Collections Act. Over the years he has done a terrific job in
setting up and maintaining our Club website. I could depend on Ric to solve some
long term issues which were plaguing us. He has played an instrumental role along
[27]
with PP John Stockbridge in updating all our account signatories and we are now in
a position to really take-off as a Club and get involved in a large community project.
Ric is a person who is able to take the initiative and has the courage and tenacity to
follow through with issues and come out of difficult situations with success. Ric has
ensured through his efforts that the Club functions effectively which in turn
strengthens fellowship among members.
Ric is a Rotarian who is a shining example of Service above Self.
Congratulations Ric. I now call upon Rotarian Naomi Green to please come forward
and present the Paul Harris Fellow Pin to Rodrick McDonald.
Colin Waters has been in charge of our main fund raising activity which is the bring
n buy second hand market which has been operating out of the Metro Maddington
shopping centre since 1992. Colin looks after the rosters for both the markets and
the club. To give you an idea about his job description I will highlight his job profile
for the past 27 years. Colin attends the markets every Sunday to supervise collection
from sellers and he along with his assistant Andy are involved in the markets from
6;30 to 11Am. After the money has been collected it has to be counted. A form has
to be filled up before it is deposited in the bank. Colin then emails all the members
with the market results and the club duties for the following week. He maintains a
spreadsheet to record takings and also the expenditure incurred in running the
markets. He liaises with the shopping centre to deal with any issues which may
arise. He organises BnB purchases, cleaning gear and is responsible for the
maintenance of the toilet block and store room. Colin maintains stocks of Club
Uniforms and orders new ones when required.
[28]
As President, I have found that Colin and Andy have developed a system that works
and the Club is in a healthy financial position because our fundraising activity is
managed well. Colin has got a reputation of being a good manager and a person
who can get the job done.
Colin’s contribution to The Rotary Club of Southern Districts is being recognised
tonight with a Paul Harris Fellow which will add to the seven he already has.
Congratulations Col! I now call upon Rotarian Zaneta to please come forward and
present the Paul Harris Pin to Colin Waters
Past District Governor, Philip Geoffrey Cordery has organised very good Guest
speakers in his role as Programme Director. He was a go to person for the President
when a role had to be filled at the last moment. Phil is always the first person to put
his hand up as a substitute for members unable to attend the Sunday markets, or
other roles such as attendance, property, seargent, fines master you name it. I fondly
call him the “man for all seasons”. Phil sends out meeting notes to all members to
report on our weekly meetings which come in very handy when we are unable to
make it to meetings. The “ Rotary Out West” ,which is a compilation of happenings in
all Rotary Clubs in Western Australia, goes out to all Rotarians and Phil puts in long
hours to compile all that information to keep us informed. Phil also runs the Short
term exchange program which gives students an experience of living in another
country and experience a different culture. Phil is there on most occasions picking up
these students form the airport and seeing them off as well.
Rotary is proud to have people like Phil who are really dedicated to the cause of
Rotary and who put their heart and soul into the organisation.
[29]
Congratulations Phil on being awarded another Paul Harris pin.
Can I now call upon Rotarian Teresa to come forward and present the PHF pin to
Phil.
Andy Hopper has been a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Southern Districts
since it very inception in 2010. He has served as Community Director on four
occasions and as Sergeant twice. All along he has been part of the Fund raising
team assisting Colin. Andy is there every Sunday at the markets overseeing
everything that I had outlined when I read out Colin’s citation, so I won’t repeat them
here. As Colin signs his name as Col in his correspondence with the Club Members I
call him the Colonel and therefore Andy becomes the Lieutenant Colonel. Andy has
been an asset to the Rotary Club of Southern Districts and has always played an
important role in the Club. Fundraising was one of the areas which was the least of
my worries because of the dedicated efforts of Andy and Colin and they lived up to
their reputation of being efficient in their roles.
Andy, congratulations on another Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
May I call up Rotarian Michelle Kerr to come forward and present the Paul Harris pin
to Andy Hopper.
[30]
John Simpson Rotarian of the Year Award
The John Simpson Rotarian of the year goes to Past President John Stockbridge.
As I had mentioned in my annual report I had to encounter a few challenges as I took
over as President. To further exacerbate the situation the President Elect at that
point of time resigned two months into my term. John immediately put his hand up to
fill that role as an interim measure. John has run our Projects planning session and
over the years has been regular in representing our Club at the District conferences.
He accompanied Ric and myself to the bank on numerous occasions while we were
sorting out our accounts and also to the Gosnells Council as part of our planning for
a major project. John has been a board member of district 9465 since 2014 for three
years as Public relations director and from 2017 as the Membership Director. John is
also been recently appointed as a Director on the National Board of Rotary Australia
Community Service Ltd (RAWCS). He maintains our Facebook pages and we have
three. He has always set a high benchmark for whatever role he has taken on in the
Club.
Congratulations John. I now request Nola Simpson to kindly come forward and
present the John Simpson Rotarian of the Year Award to John Stockbridge.
