HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEEK’S
PROGRAM
by the Reno Gazette Journal, her local
newspaper, in 2004.
In 2009 she received the "Service Above
Self" award from Rotary International.
She has spoken to over 350 conferences
for both Rotarians and teachers of the deaf
about what she learned as an Ambassadorial
Scholar.
Jean is the m other of K ent, age 24
and is a musician in Reno, and daughter Katy
29, who is an performer in New York City. A
little known fact about Jean is that for
exercise she hoola hoops and has used her
hoop to represent the "Rotary Wheel" in a
speech about women in Rotary.
This is an outline of some of the Literacy
projects Jean talked about:
Children learn to read through the 3rd grade.
Children read to learn starting in the 4th
grade.
A child that has problems reading in the 4th
grade will fall behind and it is hard to keep
up.
Horizons National Student
Enrichment Program™ is a transformative,
educational summer enrichment program
serving low-income public school students
with a broad range of academic abilities. At
the heart of every Horizons community is a
partnership with independent schools and/
or colleges, local public schools and the
Horizons program. Horizons students spend
six weeks each summer on these campuses
engaged in a program that blends high
quality academics with cultural enrichment
and confidence-building activities. Given an
opportunity to attend for nine consecutive
PP Pat Magnani introduced Jean Irwin
Hatfield. Jene is a retired Teacher of
the Deaf from Reno, Nevada. She has taught
in grades pre-school through 12th grade in 12
schools. Jean was an Ambassadorial Scholar
in 1989. She speaks to many Rotary groups
about the long term effects of investment in
the Foundation.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship Jean
received allowed her to do research into
reading and deafness 22 years ago which
earned her a Master’s Degree from
Nottingham University in England. After
this education, her students broke what is
considered a glass ceiling for the deaf and
achieved high levels of reading.
One of the most important roles Jean has
had was as a grassroots coordinator for the
passage of a legislative bill to make the
testing of hearing mandatory before a baby
leaves the hospital in Nevada. Nevada
moved from 36th to 8th in the nation for
children tested at birth for hearing loss in
just two years after this bill passed, resulting
in the early intervention that is so critical to
language development.
She now is District Literacy Chair for 5180
in the Northern California Area. Her focus is
One-on-One volunteers to teach children to
read and was an advisor to Playmakers, a
Football camp, which has a literacy
component. She just returned from Belize
where she taught teachers there what she
learned 25 years ago on the scholarship.
After what she learned on the Scholarship
she was chosen "Reading Teacher of the
Year" in 1992 by the International Reading
Association.
She got the “Best of Education” award

summers, Horizons students grow in skills
and confidence returning to their own
schools each fall better prepared.
Playmakers After -School Reading
Programs are helping kids overcome
challenges in school, and on the playground.
The programs have proven that children can
overcome the challenges of their social and
economical environment.
Playmakers is addressing kids reading year
round. The summer reading programs are
assisting kids to maintain and increase
reading levels with the most difficult kids in
the community.
The peer-to-peer mentoring program is
leading the way in high school and middle
school student/athletes mentoring
elementary kids to learn to read.
Brazil Solar Ear Hearing Aid Project
Folsom Rotary Club under the direction of
Jean Hatfield, joined forces with Luiz
Ricardo Begosso from the Cândido Mota
Rotary Club, Assis Norte Rotary Club and
Alonso Campoi Padilha, Jr. of District 4510
in the Brazilian State of Sao Paulo to give the
gift of hearing to hearing impaired children
and adults with 164 solar battery powered
hearing aids.
The photo shows some of the children being
fitted for custom made ear molds that will be
used with the Solar Ear hearing aids.
Jean then took questions from the
Rotarians and encouraged the Club to make
Literacy a part of all Club projects.
Jean Irwin Hatfield and President Rich
As is the usual custom, President Rich
presented Jean with a Rotary gift in gratitude
for her informative presentation.
Then, President Rich asked us to raise our
glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary
Around the World. The meeting was
adjourned.
