Parents,

During the month of February we often reflect upon those we love and cherish. We desire for them to have fulfilling and happy lives. By instilling the love of learning with our children at a very young age we set the foundation for them on their educational journey. We nurture a child's love of learning by expanding on his or her own inquisitive nature. As teachers and parents, we know that learning is more than just teaching “standards.” We are responsible for creating an environment of support that allows our children to develop their own ideas, express their feelings, take risks, make choices, and most of all, grow to be strong, thinking individuals. Our “One to the World “initiative promotes the love of learning through highly engaged lessons that are authentic, rigorous and strong in content. Students are excited to create, collaborate and problem solve with one another. Our teachers are reaching beyond the classroom walls connecting with students around the world. Students are excited about their lessons as they build awareness of community needs and creating projects that solve public issues.

Our Rosa Lee Carter staff is meeting monthly to support this initiative and collaborate with one another to discuss lesson protocols, processes and driving questions from students. The RLC community plays an integral part to this instructional practice. Students also improve the quality of their work by connecting to others beyond their teachers and classmates. You may be asked to attend a presentation, provide valuable tools or connect through technology to support teaching and learning. We realize the need for our students to be highly productive individuals when entering the workforce. It will be necessary for our children to be creators, collaborators, communicators and problem solvers. Through authentic, rigorous lessons, students become invested in their learning and see the value of their education. Rosa Lee is highlighting each grade level’s “One to the World” lessons on our website, so please take the opportunity to view our students in action!Thank you for partnering with us as we strive to be the very best at our trade. We appreciate your constant support and encouragement.

Counselor’s Corner with Mr. Hak and Mrs. Kraly

For the month of February, our guidance lessons will focus on the char-acter trait of

“Responsibility.” This character trait will allow the students to learn to be responisble individuals. Ways to show responisbilty are doing what you are suppose to do, planning ahead, persevere: keep on trying and never give up, always do your best, use self- control, be self- disciplined, think before you act and be accountable for your words, actions, and attitudes!

We hope everyone enjoyed the snow-cation! We hope that many of you had an opportunity to do some art during the unexpected break! The fifth graders are working on 3-D perspective with Ms. Hassinger. Fourth graders are learning about colonial times and the use of lanterns. Students will be making their own metal lanterns, which combine form and function. Third graders are printing, using foam plates and brayers. Second graders will be creating dragon hats as well as costumes for their music program. First graders will be finishing their parrots and starting self-portraits. Miss Savarese’s 5th grade classes will be glazing their clay plates. They will also be doing self-portrait paintings. Fourth graders will be creating cubist inspired self-portraits. Students will also be doing radial printmaking. Third graders will be creating coil pots and doing animal printmaking. Second graders will be making clay pinch pot monsters. First grade will be creating pinch pots, as well as robot printmaking. As you can see, your students are very busy! Please be aware of what day your child has art. Students sometimes become upset if they are wearing good clothing on art day. We want students to be able to create freely without worry!

This February, the PE program at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School is going to emphasize on dance, educational gymnastics, and basketball. We will continue to emphasize the importance of learning the five components of fitness along with the five intensity levels. We believe as a PE department that the process of participating regularly in a physically active lifestyle will lead to personal enjoyment, challenge, satisfaction, and a healthy mind and body. We will emphasize to our students to give their very best effort and show good sportsmanship in all they do in

PE class. Stay active!

Physical Education at RLC

As we enter the month of February, we also enter the Third Marking Period in music class. Students will continue to hone and strengthen their musical skills through a variety of facets. First Grade will continue to explore rhythmic figures in relation to steady beat, melodic songs, and musical composition. Second Grade will spend the month of February focusing on their show “The Tale of the Chinese Zodiac”. Students will be singing, learning lines, understanding stage direction all in preparation for their mid-March performance. Third Grade will continue learning about rhythmic figures as well as melodic music and how it applies to music literacy. Fourth Grade will be introduced to recorders this month. Students will work towards being able to read music and perform simple songs for classmates with these instruments. Finally, Fifth Grade will continue learning about the recorder. This will be a continuum from their fourth grade year so that students will be able to build on their previous knowledge.

Overall, we are looking forward to a fantastic February in music class!

We hope you all stayed warm over the snow days! Hopefully some of you were able to finish some books you were reading or started to read new ones! We are very happy to announce that our library will receive some exciting new additions this month. First, we will be adding over 600 new books to our library collection, and second, we will be purchasing 30 new Chromebooks that will stay in the library permanently for student use! We are thrilled to be able to offer these additional resources to our students and staff. As always, volunteers are welcome in our busy library any time or day of the week. If you are interested in helping us for an hour or two, please let us know.

Parent Resource Center – The Parent Resource Center (PRC) helps inform and educate families including siblings, grandparents and friends, about special education. What it means and how services are provided to children and youth. The PRC gives families the tools they need to fully participate and collaborate with school staff during each phase of the special education process – from the initial referral through the development and implementation of a student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). The PRC offers a wide variety of services at no cost to include training workshops and seminars on a wide variety of topics to inform, educate and encourage parent participation in the educational decision making process. PRC staff are available to meet with parents individually whose children are experiencing difficulty at school, at home or in the community to explore available options to provide assistance and/or to assist parents to prepare for special education meetings at school.

Parents are encouraged to reach out to the Parent Resource Center at www.lcps.org/prc to learn about upcoming programs and workshops of interest to the disability community and to seek information about LCPS special education programs and services. This is a wonderful parent resource and parents are urged to utilize the PRC.
