The Extraordinary of the Ordinary: The Life of Easter People

Lent, Holy Week and Easter always prove to be challenging times for clergy. People always comment on how tired I must be and sometimes comment on how tired they are the week immediately following Easter. It is true that life in the Church is more demanding and responsibilities increase during the time surrounding Easter, and yes the intensity increases. Following Easter life returns to normal, maybe even the ordinary. We resume our springtime routines and it seems as if nothing has changed. Remember I write this not in an accusatory or critical tone but merely as an observance of what I personally experience in my own life. After reading the gospel accounts of Jesus’ appearances after the resurrection an “aha”! moment occurred for me. All of the appearances occurred in the midst of a normal routine or duty. They all occurred in the or-dinary. Now the ordinary is no longer the ordinary but the extraordinary. The duty anointing of Jesus’ body with spices at the tomb became an incredible manifestation of his resurrection. The ordinary job of fishing became a miraculous catch. He died and rose victorious, beating death. We are now Easter people. We think of Lent as a time of discipline in preparation for Easter. Really, now the work begins, the work of not letting us return to that old way of thinking and living the ordinary. Remember the ordinary has become ex-traordinary. God is in the ordinary, if we chose to see it. Changes in life may seem daunting and the life of an Easter person may seem frightening. Remember that Jesus always bid his disciples not to be afraid. His ini-tial resurrection appearances according to the Gospel of John begin with His peace. Paul later calls it the peace that “passes or transcends” all understanding. A word or a feeling cannot capture it. This peace can only be captured by the experiences of life itself. He did not leave them alone but gave them and gives us the Holy Spirit to live as Extraordinary Easter people. BLESS !!! Fr. Tom III

Sunday after the 11:15 am church service: Zo-e’Anna Theis, Kenneth O’Neal, Jane and Dennis Quein, Julie and Katie Murray, Michelle Tapscott and Brandy Weatherford. The chicken and bis-cuits from Church’s were delicious as were the

many sides that the parishioners brought to share. Top that all off with cake and ice cream

and it was a great day! He Is Risen!

LOST WOMEN OF THE BIBLE BOOK STUDY

The book study, LOST WOMEN OF THE BIBLE: THE WOMEN WE THOUGHT WE KNEW, by Carolyn Custis James, which is for

women of all ages will be gathering at Fran Cox’s home, 2517 Birkdale Lane, Riverhill, for their next class on Thursday, May 4 from 5 pm until 7 pm. There will be refreshments from 5-5:30 pm. The class will begin promptly at 5:30 pm. St. Peter's will provide

the non-alcoholic punch and wine along with the participants vol-unteering to bring an appetizer to share. This month the focus will be on the chapter, “Missing in Action – Tamar”. Please be sure

you have read the chapters and reviewed the questions. It truly helps with class discussion. Ladies, I do hope you are can join us!

Church Periodical Club Update… A special thank you to everyone who contributed last month in support of this very vital ministry. Your gifts collected at all three services totaled $548.05. An additional $50.00 from the ECW was added bringing the total to $598.05. All was forwarded to the Church Periodical Club and added to the National Book Fund, a grant based program of the CPC. The current CPC Granting Committee is busily review-ing all the 2017 applicants and will be making their awards in June. I will definitely be reporting back with these results…so, STAY TUNED!!

Please take a moment to read over and see for yourself how God has blessed our gifts and in turn blessed those who received them. SUNDAY SCHOOL REMINDER

REMINDER that Sunday School is offered every Sunday during the 9:30 am church service for children through 5th grade. Parents are asked to drop their child(ren) off in the chapel before they head to church. Church volunteers will lead the children in prayer including the Lord’s Prayer, in singing songs, creating a craft and teaching and discussing a bible story. Most Sundays one of the priests will visit with the children for a few minutes in chapel. The children will re-join their parents during the Passing of Peace so they may enjoy communion as a family. If your child is 2 years old or younger they will remain in the Children’s Center.

***On Sunday May 21, there is a SUNDAE Sunday School Party for the children in Tuck-er Hall after the 9:30 am church service. There is no Sunday school that morning.***

MUSIC MINISTRIES Greetings St. Peter's Church Family, What a meaningful and joyous Holy Week we shared together! I want-ed to take a moment to recognize all members of the Music Ministries Team. THANK YOU to David, our new leader, thank you to our Praise Team, and thank you to our Chancel Choir. The time, energy, and tal-ent you shared with the parish family helped to ensure both reflective and celebratory worship throughout the journey of Holy Week. Church musicians dedicate many hours a week to their craft, THANK YOU for your desire to enrich worship for our church community. Now, an invitation! RECOGNITION SUNDAY Mother’s Day/Senior Recognition Sunday is May 14 at the 9:30 am and the 11:15 am church services. Seniors graduating from high school in May will be recognized and presented with a gift from ECW. Phillip Beene who is a senior at Tivy High School will be giving a talk during the sermon time at all three church services. The readers, ushers and acolytes during the 9:30 am and the 11:15 am church services will be children and youth of St. Peter’s. So be sure and join us on a very special day in the life of St. Peter’s as we recognize our children, youth and the many special mothers of our church.

In summary, our Vestry and parishioners voted on a negative budget this year. At this point in time (1st quarter), we have lost less than expected, primarily due to expense management. This is good

news! As we head in to the summer months, please remember your pledge payments (as we typically have a summer “slump”).

Your giving is most appreciated, and needed! Thank you for all you do for St. Peter’s! A goal of

$78,453 per month income would help us to avoid a negative bottom line ($941,446 for the year, or $235,362 per quarter).

A Note from the Senior Warden

Greetings! I feel like I am just now catching my breath after the frenzy of Holy Week. I

hope all of you had a wonderful Easter Sunday. It was great to see so many in church for

the celebration of the Resurrection. Thanks to all who brought food for the Saturday Easter

Vigil, and for the Sunday Easter Feast.

Have you noticed how nice the benches in the garden look? A great big thank you to Ste-

phen Drane for making them so beautiful. The benches added to the beauty of the garden

for Palm Sunday and Easter.

A great opportunity for you to add to our Stone Soup Stewardship will be coming up this

summer. Vacation Bible School will take place the week of July 17, and we will gladly ac-

cept the donation of your time and talent to help make VBS 2017 a fabulous success! We

will need decorators the week before, group leaders the week of, helpers for registration on

day one, and a clean-up crew on day five. Let Linda Jordan know by email if you would like

to volunteer or donate materials for the best week of the year! Lin-

There will be no vestry report this month as the vestry meeting will take place after Rock

Road articles are due. Look for April’s vestry report in the June Rock Road.

ST. JEROME JOTS

Thank you to our guest speaker Lorraine Le'Mon for her captivating and inspirational

book preview at our April meeting. It was wonderful! Thank you also to all of you who came to hear it. It was a great turnout. There were many lovely com-ments received about it like this one, "I was so im-pressed with Lorraine - her vitality, her ability to achieve regardless of her background, and the poign-ancy of her story. Truly a memorable experience." And another said, "I thought Lorraine's book preview was not only very interesting, but also moving."

The next meeting prior to our summer break this year will be a business meeting on Wednesday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the library. Meetings will resume in the fall on the 1st Wednesday of the month, September 6th at 2:00 P.M. The final book review for this year is going to be another outstanding program so save the date at 2 o'clock for that on Wednesday October 4th.

The library will remain open during regular church of-fice hours throughout the summer months, and we encourage you to make full use of our church's won-derful resource for your reading enjoyment.
