GO BACK TO THE FATHER

We’re now in the middle of Lent. The whole Church community is on her annual forty-day retreat. We keep moving forward to our Easter destination. Here in our communities we plan on holding a three- night mission in each parish. From April 8 to April 10 that will be at Saint Angela’s and from April 10 to April 12 that will be at St Matthew’s. You are all invited to attend. You are all convoked to go back to our Father as we will greatly value the sacrament of penance, the sacrament of conversion. Indeed ‘I shall get up and go back to my father’ is the great message of this fourth Lenten week-

end as we hear the parable of the ‘Prodigal Son’, which could be better called the parable of the ‘merciful Father.’ This phrase from the Prodigal son says it all. Besides, it is the best decision he’s ever made, the best statement he’s ever issued. How many great songs haven’t we heard around such words! I particu-

larly remember this beautiful French hymn that had cradled my childhood: “Oui je me lèverai, et j’irai vers mon père.” The prodigal son only intended to beg favor and reconciliation with his father. He couldn’t have ev-

er imagined the warm welcome his father gave him. The father didn’t need to speak words of forgiveness to his son. His actions spoke more eloquently! The beau-

tiful robe, the ring, the fattened calf, and the festive

banquet symbolize the new life of anyone who returns to God. The prodigal son despite his ungratefulness

and unfairness was welcomed and reinstated not as a hired worker, but as a son, a loved son. That is what we call MERCY. That is what the Lenten season is in-

viting us to experience. So, let us go back to our Fa-

ther to also experience his tenderness and mercy! Do not say later! “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

Fr. Paul Charly Chéry

March 31 ~ Fourth Sunday of Lent

Our epistle complements this week’s Gospel by highlighting another aspect of the Father’s mercy. In reality, God has not simply waited at home for us with open arms: in Christ, he has journeyed out to bring us back. Commenting on this passage, St John Chrysostom exclaims: “Can you see how great God’s love is for us? Who was the offended party? He was. Who took the first steps toward rec-onciliation? He did. Some will say that he sent the Son in his place, but this is a misunderstanding. Christ did not come apart from the Father who sent him. They were both involved together in this work of reconciliation.”

A l’église Saint Mat-thieu in Dorchester « light is on for you », il y a confession durant les mercredis de Ca-rême de 3h à 5h pm.
